Baker Mayfield Helped Motivate Lavonte David To Return For 2025

Bucs icon linebacker Lavonte David will fully admit he was leaning toward calling it a career at one point in the offseason.
Several factors swayed him to return 2025. One was the makeup of the club. David has stated that if the Bucs were a rebuilding team or a loser team like the Lost Decade clubs, he would be at his home in Miami right now.
David is a big fan of Baker Mayfield. David loves his style, his grit, his heart and his aggressive ways on the field. David says Mayfield is a linebacker at quarterback and, well, Joe guesses David bonds with his fellow linebackers and guys with linebacker mentalities.
Speaking with Kay Adams of FanDuel TV yesterday at One Buc Palace, David told Adams it was a motivational phone call from Mayfield that helped David make his decision to return to the Bucs.

Joe knows a little over a year ago, Mike Evans decided to return to the Bucs, in part, because of Mayfield. This spring Mayfield worked his magic on David.
Say what you want about Todd Bowles, but it was Bowles who used a hard sell on Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to sign Mayfield when most of the league thought he was washed.
Signing Mayfield and allowing him to blossom on his terms may be one of the smartest moves any team has made this decade.

Smart teams listen to player input and qualified professionals. The Bucs are receptive and their perform on the field since the Brady era bears this out.
It’s made them a more exciting team to watch which impacts their bottom line and keeps the league and Glazers happy.

When LaVonte David and Mike Evans talk about Baker that way. And that’s news to me that Licht says he may retire when Baker is done. Looks like some of us Baker Fans aren’t on an island like it can sometimes feel like here on JBF.

Bakerfan. He just need to help get my bucs to a Superbowl or at least a conference championship game that’s the only thing that matters to me. And what I do know is once his time is done here just like the Brady fan boys you will be gone as well.
