Baker Mayfield: Josh Grizzard Simiplification Will Help

July 29th, 2025

New Bucs playcaller Josh Grizzard.

The Tampa Bay offense is different with rookie playcaller Josh Grizzard, but at the same time it’s not. That’s sort of the consensus from players.

Baker Mayfield explained a shred of that yesterday.

“[Grizzard] simplified some stuff in the motions, and what not, that I think is really going to help us,” Mayfield said. “So not too much change, it’s just more so, ‘Ok, since we’ve got the same system, a lot of the same guys, how do we not let the little details slip to the side?’ And so for me, that just goes back to leadership and really installing [the offense] like I’m learning it for the first time.”

Mayfield’s comments were to Prickly Pete Prisco during the CBS Sports HQ visit to One Buc Palace.

Earlier this week, Mayfield told local reporters Grizzard that managing presnap motion to take advantage of defenses is “Grizz’s forte.”

Simplifying an offense for those within in it is always a good thing. Players can play faster and errors should decrease. The key, of course, is those simplifications not making life easier for a defense.

Joe has no doubt Grizzard is qualified and ready, but what will be his learning curve and does he have that special knack the standout playcallers possess?

“that special knack the standout playcallers possess?” I think you’re missing something here Joe. Think it was coincidence our last 2 OCs are now wealthy head coaches? I don’t. And Mayfield has been with this guy a year and likes and respects his work ethic. Barring a crazy rash of injuries, this team is going to have a great offense. Maybe the best I’ve ever seen. And I ain’t whistling Dixie!

    Kenton

    AMEN BROTHER!

  3. ballwasher61 Says:

I can see Grizz being better than the last 2 OC’s. Hopefully if it turns out that way he wants to stay and be content and work on Rings than a wallet just yet.

  4. Truth be Told Says:

This is all about having a Franchise QB that can execute what the Offense is doing. Getting guys in the right place pre-snap and making the proper reads and getting the ball out in time. Baker is the Man in all those aspects. We are truly fortunate to have gone from TB12 to Baker. Let’s get another ring this year. Go Bucs!!

What made the ucs offense so great last season, was the run game
With the addition of Bucky Irving, the Bucs offense were unstoppable
Their success had more to do with Bucky than Coen play calling

As long as they are able to run the football
They will have a Top offense,

    “””Bucs””

  7. Defense Rules Says:

ballwasher61 … ‘I can see Grizz being better than the last 2 OC’s’.

We’re all obviously HOPING for that, but like Joe says … ‘HOPE isn’t a STRATEGY’. Really can’t wait to see how this season evolves (and not just for the offense).

  8. Hodad Says:

Simplfied, maybe Bowles should take note. Recently Barber said what made Kiffen’s defense great was they ran the same thing, with only a few variations. We did what we do no matter what the offense did. We played fast that way, and rarely made mistakes. How many times have our secondary looked lost? How many times did we see outside rushers look lost in coverage. Maybe it’s better doing fewer things better, than getting beat doing to many things the wrong way?

  9. Baker Bowl Says:

    @Hodad

Couldn’t agree more. I was going to say it looked like we lacked an identity, but I don’t think that was the problem. I think Bowles had an identity for the Defense, but the players struggled to understand who they were supposed to be within that.

Seeing Joe Tryon drop back in coverage hurt me so bad every time.

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

My biggest concern with Grizz is getting two plays into the huddle quickly so that Bake has enough time to read the defense and audible if needed. Simplifying motion calls and maybe some verbiage simplification will speed up the play calling. Good news

    @ Kenton Smith – Well said !

  13. SlyPirate Says:

Joe’s Bowles quote on Grizz’s offense just yesterday:

“It’s not as bad as you think.”

    Hint to Todd!
