Greatness Wiring Of Baker Mayfield

July 25th, 2025

The Bucs have a franchise quarterback. The Bucs also have a top-10 quarterback.

So where does it end for Baker Mayfield?

Joe thinks of 30-year-old Mayfield and remembers Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon getting his first All-Pro honor at 35 years old and then winning the league MVP award in 2002. Of course, Oakland was Gannon’s fourth NFL team.

The Bucs are Mayfield’s fourth NFL team.

Yesterday, Joe asked Mayfield about now being widely considered a top-10 QB. Mayfield politely scoffed. He’s unimpressed. And as Mayfield explained yesterday to TheAthletic.com, his DNA is about extreme greatness.

“It’s how I’m intrinsically wired,” Mayfield told The Athletic on Thursday. “Just don’t be satisfied. That’s the part of this game that you love. The second you take it off the gas, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve dealt with that. I’ve dealt with the ups and downs and realized if I don’t try to bring my best stuff to work every day, it’s going to be a failure.

“That’s the point: How good can I get?”

And how good can Mayfield get? It’s an amazing question. The guy has had a literally endless stream of offensive coordinators.

Joe thinks Mayfield can improve, but the bar already is extraordinarily high. If he doesn’t improve, he’s still enough of a QB to reach a Super Bowl.

    Great mentality for Bake.

  2. Truth be Told Says:

First long term legit Franchise quarterback. Match made in heaven for Bucs and Baker. Go Bucs!

  3. KABucs Says:

It’s funny how being drafted number one can be a curse but slipping down in the draft board a bit can be a blessing.
Just ask Mahomes… He went to a team that mainly needed a quarterback and had a great offensive-minded coach.
And Jackson was a huge winner here.
Being picked in the top five by a scrub team with a terrible front office, maybe a suspect coaching staff (that part can be pretty random) and frequently a porous O-line can greatly change a QBs development and career path.

  4. JD Still Says:

That’s a good attitude but words are not results , for every Rich Gannon or Tom Brady there are dozens of also rans , the Peter Principle is real, everyone does rise to their own level of incompetence for many different reasons, but if you are designated to lead a team , the results the team achieves should be the measure of your success, that’s why you make the big bucks , ( does anyone remember. the team ,the car , or the driver who almost won the Daytona 500?).

  5. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Don’t talk about it, be about it

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Baker … ‘the rankings don’t mean anything if you don’t win games.’

    The REAL bottom line.

  7. Edward Says:

KAbucs good point. I’d rather be drafted #32

  8. Buc off Says:

    Defense rules is a moron

  9. geno711 Says:

    Good point DR.

  10. Kenton Smith Says:

Buc off, we should vote(have a flash poll) on a better moniker for you-we need to replace Buc. The choices could be Jack, Jerk, Yank, or Beat. I’d go with Jerk off.

  11. Buc off Says:

Kenton smith…..good one bud. I just don’t see how Defense Rules statement makes any sense. Baker brings so much to this team, Bucs would be a below .500 team without him. He’s won the division both years he’s been here. He brings leadership and his player will run through a wall for him. So Defense Rukes statement makes absolutely no sense. Good day to you sir.

  12. orlbucfan Says:

We need a poll on how important preseason games. Joes still don’t get it.

  13. View from 132 Says:

Great comparison Joe. Yes, I can see Baker win an MVP only to throw 3 pick-6s in the Super Bowl also.

  14. Bojim Says:

After hus first season I had confidence in him. He proved it last year. I have even more confidence in him now.

  15. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Extend him JL,,, 3 more years at 50mil,,, that’s going to be a bargain for a top 10 QB,,, I wouldn’t mess around or let him rest the market

  16. ballwasher61 Says:

I’ve said this before, read what Otto Graham said about talent without work, Now we’re going back to the 50″s,{I read a lot as a youngster}, but the mantra still hold true. Look at what that guy did and tell me it’s not relavent today.

  17. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Buc off

    DR is QUOTING BAKER MAYFIELD.

    Moron.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Buc off … ‘I just don’t see how Defense Rules statement makes any sense.’

IF you’d taken the time to click the link that Joe provided in this article to an earlier interview with Baker (the red ‘Baker politely scoffed’ link) you would’ve found an article entitled ‘QB Rankings and Baker Mayfield’. In that article, Baker is QUOTED as saying …

‘the rankings don’t mean anything if you don’t win games.’

THAT’S what I was referring to as the REAL bottom line … in Baker’s own words.

  19. Oneilbuc Says:

DR. Some of these people are not real bucs fans just like when we had Brady remember NEbucfan, Youngbuc and others that were on here saying the same stuff some of the people saying about Baker Mayfield? They don’t criticize him even when when it vaulet . And every time we lose a game they blame the defense or the coaches even when the games are in Baker Mayfield hands to win or close out games he throws a pick or fumble the ball. These guys are only here for Baker Mayfield and Baker only they don’t care about the winning championships all they care about is Baker having a good season. They will be all gone if the bucs move on from Baker Mayfield.

  20. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

KABucs, very astute analysis. 100% correct. It was a curse for Baker but he took it all on the chin and kept grinding away until his chance came in the form of The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, thank goodness!! This year he will play a little better. He sure won’t regress. Let’s go!!!!

  21. Fan of the South Says:

Problem with ‘ Baked’ goods is the short shelf life. A cake still looks good when it goes into the dumpster because it’s just not good enough.
Regular season Mayfield bakes up fancy frosted eclairs with rich cream filling. Best he can do in the Playoffs is Turnovers.

  22. Bucblind Says:

I thought Baker was winning games? First year after Brady every single analyst/fan agreed 4 games would be our season. BM6 arrives on the scene. Lo and behold we won 10 games. That’s 150% more than everyone said would be. One year later 10 again.with a few little changes and it would have been 14. This will be the big year. It’s all coming together for us and BM6 will be leading the way and all those that like holding on to the past reliving it ad nauseum will be forgotten.

  23. heyjude Says:

    Love Baker and his attitude.

He’s the guy that has played under eight different head coaches and I think ten different offensive coordinators including Grizz. He found his fit with the Bucs, but his talent was always there. It just fell between the cracks of the previous teams revolving doors. With the Browns huge error and Todd rooting for him, we are the lucky ones to have him on the Bucs.

  24. Stpetematt Says:

Man there’s a bunch of trolls running around here. Think they are Saints or Falcons fans?

    LOL

  25. Aqualung Says:

Kenton Smith – ROTFL! I have coffee spray on my iPad.

  26. BakerBucs says Says:

lets see if a QB has a total of 44 TD’s & 4500 yds passing in a season that to me is no luck involved this is a skill these receivers & slot runners coupled with Bucky .they are selling with baker mindset & his timing this year will b outstanding with new records coming for the books

  27. Oneilbuc Says:

Bakerbuc. Let’s if we can get to a conference championship at least or a Superbowl because that’s the only thing that matters. Last year he had a good regular season and fumble the ball on the 12 yard line that changed the momentum of the game. He did pretty good the year before and he threw a pick to lose that game in the playoffs against the lions. So let’s see and hope he can stop doing that.

  28. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Yeah, it’s like Jason Licht and Todd Bowles said, we want to sign Baker long term this next contract. We love what we see and we love his playing style. The people of Tampa love Baker, it’s a win win. We get the good and the bad when you have your franchise quarterback. Bakers good just happens to be a lot more than his bad according to the minds and opinions that really count.
