Jayden Daniels Had Lavonte David Second-Guessing Himself

July 19th, 2025

The Bucs had an uncommon phenomenon last season. They opened the season against the same team that knocked them out of the playoffs.

Tampa Bay pummeled Washington in Week 1 37-20 in Tampa. The game wasn’t that close, as Washington scored a late touchdown. But rookie quarter Jayden Daniels put the NFL on notice.

Daniels was elusive and dangerous and ran the ball 16 times for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns.

In a sitdown this week with CBS Sports HQ, iconic Bucs linebacker Lavonte David said Daniels made him question himself that day.

“The first game we played them in the season, I was getting kind of, you know, frustrated,” David said. “He was just taking off and stuff like that. I’m like, ‘Hold on, man.’ I’m questioning myself. ‘Man, I’m not in the best shape I thought I was in.'”

David went on to explain that when he ran down Daniels to prevent a first down 18 weeks later, it was a way to show Daniels, “Alright now, young fella, I can still go now.”

Don’t remember the play? It’s embedded below.

Host Jaclyn Deaugustino told David he clocked 19.5 miles per hour running down Daniels on that play. That seemed to excite David, who said if he can hit 20 mph this season he might play two more years.

We lost against them because they had the better quarterback and our quarterback turned over the ball in the 4th quarter.

  2. KABucs Says:

No, there were many factors in that loss… and McMillan was part of that fumble. There were other mistakes made, dumb penalties and defensive issues at play here.
To boil it down to a single fumble causing the loss is ludicrous.
Baker didn’t play a bad game outside of that.

  3. Ufcguy32 Says:

They also went for every single 4th down and we didnt do crap to stop them. Over and over. This is our issue. We dont get off the field when we have to. If we dont fix this. We do nothing this year

    Also out-coached.

  5. LakelandBuc Says:

Our defense stopped Washington twice on 4th down

The punted after the first 4th down stop
Then funbles the ball away after the second 4th down stop

  6. LakelandBuc Says:

    “””The Offense”””

  7. Beeej Says:

They never punted once. Oneilbuc ALSO spent 3 years saying Brady was washed

  8. Oneilbuc Says:

Beeej. And what happened in 2022 when AB and Gronk left? I rest my case!!

  9. LakelandBuc Says:

    Washington never punted
But they turned the ball over on downs twice

And our offense punted after the first time they turned the ball over on downs. And fumble the ball after the second time they turned the ball over on downs.

LOL! Baker Boi(s) still trying to pretend that Baker didn’t lose the game. When the defense makes a huge 4th quarter goal line stop, gives the ball back to the offense with a chance to go up two scores – the defense did its job. The offense did not, in particular Baker who, for the second playoff game in a row, collapsed when it mattered most. Lets hope Baker we get a more focused and serious Baker this year, but considering he’s out on a golf course drinking beers like he’s Happy Gilmore, well, a champion like Brady would never be caught dead doing that – at least not coming off a season where he single handedly cost his team a playoff game.

If only we had JaMiss Winston back.

That play is the perfect example of why I was hoping that the Bucs would draft more speed at ILB.

Look at the Denver game last season to see two examples of the antithesis of that play – Bo Nix beating Dennis to the edge for a touchdown, and fourth string RB Jaleel McLaughlin initially contained by Anthony Nelson before escaping and beating KJ Britt to the edge for a touchdown; those were the only two touchdowns Denver scored in the game, both in the first quarter.

    Oneilbuc, smh sybau

Let’s appreciate David while we still have him. That burst was Phenominal! Notice too, slight change of directiion…. the angle he took. Master of his position without doubt. That was his job on that play! Get that stuff out of here kid!

    Go Bucs!

  15. DBS Says:

Let’s see. After the fumble the offense then drove down the field to get in position to score points again. But on third down our rookie center screws up the snap. Bowles goes for 3 to tie the game. Then on a 4th down behind the line our super stud gets a little stiff arm can’t make the tackle and gets left holding Daniel’s towel.

Sure. . Blame it all on Baker. Washington won by a lucky bounce off the goal post.

  16. Kgh4life Says:

Bowles should’ve been more aggressive in that game. The defense couldn’t get off the field.

  17. DBS Says:

Also absolutely nobody knows if Bowles had gone on 4th down the offense would have picked up the 1st. Washington just as well could have stuffed us short. Then you armchairs could have started crying because he didn’t take the field goal. With at least 3 haters he couldn’t win no matter what he did.

  18. ballwasher61 Says:

Too many 3’s and not enough 7’s, never just 1 play but a composite of missed opportunities.

  19. lambchop Says:

These tards want Trask, I’m assuming, as what other choice do you have at QB? Trask wouldn’t even sniff the playoffs and LVD would have already been retired. These fruitcakes slamming their keyboard in rage smh.
