Former NFL Suit Weighs In On Todd Bowles’ Extension

June 27th, 2025

Reaction.

When it was announced yesterday that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and Bucs coach Todd Bowles received contract extensions, a former Giants suit believes this was a no-brainer move by Team Glazer.

Marc Ross, a current talking head on NFL Network and a former Giants vice president of personnel, said in his mind it is simple: Team Glazer likes winning so why not keep the winning general manager/coach duo that works together well?

“It’s the continuity,” Ross said to host of “The Insiders,” Mike Garafolo. “As you mentioned, [Bowles is] on the hot seat, but, or is he underrated?”

Ross referenced Garafolo saying just hours before news broke of Bowles’ extension, he read somewhere on the interwebs Bowles was on the hot seat this fall.

In short, Garafolo quipped, not any more.

“All that matters is that the ownership felt strongly about this, and probably Jason Licht felt really strongly about working with Todd Bowles,” Ross said.

“And there’s nothing better than working in a front office, as we did, as you know very well, with Tom Coughlin and Jerry Reese. When there’s that continuity, you’re not thinking about who’s coming in, who’s going you have your system, you have your two key figures working together, and I’m sure Jason and Todd have a fabulous working relationship, and everybody in that building feels that.

“You see the results. Yeah, he’s on the hot seat, but he won three division titles … with two different quarterbacks, the aforementioned [Tom] Brady, then the Baker Mayfield reclamation project.”

Ross also pointed out how Bowles and the Bucs won accomplished the difficult task of winning the last three division titles with three different offensive coordinators.

“I think what Todd Bowles has done is really shown [how to] bring the team together with that stability,” Ross added. “That stability, that continuity, I think you see the results with the Bucs. And I think they’re the favorite, once again, to win the division and make some more hay in the playoffs.”

As for Garafolo reading that Bowles was on the hot seat, Garafolo barked, “Wrong!”

I missed that announcement yesterday. Great news!

  2. pok Says:

seems to me the nfl lacks continuity in the front offices- with all the chaos and turnover it’s hard to build a sustainable plan. licht got that chance and it’s paying off. good for the owners and their approach

  3. Leopold Stotch Says:

Yeah I don’t know how anyone can think he’s on the hot seat when he signed an extension… Contracts don’t usually matter, but I’d say this would ease my mind of being on the hot seat.

  4. Bucsnbeer Says:

He’s just been lucky. He’s not a great coach. All of the semi success could turn at any moment. Then what?

  5. Kysbucs18 Says:

Contract extensions for coaches and front office means nothing other than they can’t sign with other teams … Bucs can fire Bowles tomorrow if they wanted to.

  6. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Just win baby, seat can’t get hot if your feet are tired from running the table and chasing trophies. Pretty sure that’s all ownership wants is to keep this all going.

10-7 last season, let’s aim for 11-6/12-5 and pray we can get to the post season w/a moderately healthy team.

Cultures’ good, locker room synergy and morale are good. Learning system is in place to where new players can lean on the staff AND their fellow teammates to get everyone on the same page a.s.a.p.

Todd Bowles is not a great coach and he is not a bum either.

I have liked a lot of things about Todd and also screamed at him about something I thought he should have done different during games on TV, like taking the ball out of Brady’s hand late in a loss, that comes to mind.

He can be ultra aggressive on Defense, blitzing everyone and the kitchen sink, and at the same time, super conservative offense calls at moments where the Head coach will make the call, like on 4th downs.

He is barely above 500 for his time with the Bucs,

BUT….. it equals 3 Division titles and playoff games.

Players seem to genuinely like playing for him, and the culture at 1 Buc place that emanates from the Bowles through the clubhouse and roster is clearly good.

So Todd is not a bum and he is not great, but he is a decent human being who is a good Head Coach.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  9. Beeej Says:

There’s great X’s and O’s guys who were horrible coaches, because the players didn’t believe in them. The players seem to love Bowles. (And didn’t we hire a chick to make those 4th down decisions?)

  10. DoooshLaRue Says:

Bowles is not a great coach and has definitely been lucky. Unless he changes his stubborn ways, I don’t think he stays for the entire contract.
I think this is the Glazers hoping for the best and a positive vibes move but ultimately they’ll eat his contract and bring in a new young HC.

  11. Obvious Says:

Agree that continuity matters. You don’t want to become a franchise that’s like the panthers where the owners are constantly butting in and making changes. That accomplishes nothing. If you can get to where the Steelers and packers are where you have a consistent program for 20 plus years, that’s fantastic, because in those systems everything becomes interchangeable, even the QBs, head coaches and front office because you’ve built an institution with a terrific culture

I think in looking at the other side, the feeling is that this is maybe a superbowl caliber roster and do you want to miss out on a window? Todd has shown some great attributes, but he also has shown some glaring weaknesses and it’s fair to wonder if he can get them to then next level.

  12. Fred Says:

Good for Bowles. Not so sure for the Bucs. He has a ton of talent and players who like him, but the pressure is on now. With the talent the Bucs have now, he should be fine. He also needs to know when to pull Dean from the game.

  13. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

While I had my fits with Bowles, I must admit, year after year, he has brought together a great coaching staff. He is a player’s coach and that has definitely been a great recruiting tool for Jason Licht. If he can turn the defense around this year, then I think Licht made the right choice.

  14. KABucs Says:

    Mike Tomlin hired in 2007
    Joh Harbaugh hired in 2008
    Andy Reid hired in 2013

NFC makes the AFC look stable.. geez
Longest tenured coach in NFC is still 4 yrs short of the third longest tenured AFC coach. Not to mention the Patriots, another AFC team, had Belichick for 24 years.
Maybe that’s why they didn’t include the entire NFL in that graphic

  15. Dewey Selmon Says:

None of this would have happened if we weren’t in the NFCS

  16. Aqualung Says:

Gruden was extended in 2007, fired after 2008. This means nothing. If the defense continues on its trajectory of growing incompetence, Todd will be teaching at Temple University in 2026.

  17. Mveal2006 Says:

Hasn’t any one ever liked the cars classic song “let the good times roll”?

Its a personal favorite for me

  18. Obvious Says:

Agreed. If things implode the extension doesn’t mean much.

  19. mj Says:

he’s not the best coach but the players love him, he needs to find his killer instinct and manage games better if he’s going to win a sb

  20. Doctor Buc Says:

Fans don’t give bowles enough credit. Yea defense has been bad for a defensive head coach and yea he’s made some clock decisions that were probably not great. Outside of that, he’s been fantastic bringing in and KEEPING talented players while motivating them in just the right way to win the NFCS through lots of terrible injuries. We love to credit Licht but if people didn’t want to play for Bowles, we’re signing free agents who don’t show up and LVD/Mike retire a long time ago and CG goes to New England. Plus knowing the right OC to hire… He deserves his flowers and earned this extension!

  21. Hearty Dikerson Says:

The league is centered around offense. Our offense is what’s saved this team the last couple seasons; Todd’s side of the ball has been the weak link.

All this talk of continuity, we’re on our 3rd OC in 3 years. Eventually our luck is going to run out with finding good play callers.

Everyone mentioning players love to play for Todd…didn’t he rank like #22 in the players’ poll for how much they like their coach?

Cites the play of two outstanding QB’s as a reason Bowles deserves a contract extension. Apparently oblivious to the fact that Bowles has nothing to do with the offense and is in charge of a defense that allows average QB’s to march their team up and down the field almost entirely unencumbered. While collapsing at key moments in the game.. Never mentioned the annual 4 game losing streaks and the times CTB cannot seem to get his entire team ready to play for almost any night games.

Not the kind of consistency paying fans are looking for. Nice work Glazers. They could have at least had Bowles finish the season before making a move. Frankly, I would have expected a little more business savvy from this otherwise outstanding ownership group. Silly miscalculation.
