Todd Bowles Explains Why Underwear Football Is Important To Rookies
June 5th, 2025As Todd Bowles said earlier this week, he doesn’t like to “sugarcoat” things for rookies in underwear football.
Bowles wasn’t trying to suggest underwear football is unimportant for veterans. But he noted underwear football is sort of a crash course for the rookies so they are ready to rock when training camp kicks off next month.
“It’s important because they have to learn the scheme and they have to pick everything up and see how we run things,” Bowles said. “For the young guys coming in, OTAs and minicamps are for them to get caught up with the vets.”
Bowles’ goal for rookies is to be “on level ground” with the vets next month. He feels it’s his responsibility to get them there.
“We don’t lose sight of that and we make sure they get the reps they need and the extra meetings and the extra walk-throughs so that by the time training camp comes, they have a chance to compete,” Bowles said.
Joe doesn’t believe Bowles loses a wink of sleep with Mike Evans skipping OTAs and training on his own. That allows Emeka Egbuka to get valuable snaps with Baker Mayfield. Same with Tez Johnson.
Evans doesn’t need the reps. Egbuka does. In a twisted way, Evans working out away from some OTAs might actually be beneficial.
Joe can’t say the same about hide-and-seek Haason Reddick.

They can’t afford to waste time once those camp practice start. So now is the time for the rookies to get how we practice and how the drills work. Get their heads wrapped around where they need to be and what they need to do when they get there.
Just learning practice routines is important. Some guys pick it up easliy and some don’t. When I played we had some dudes who were lost the first week or two of practice and it hurt them.
Go Bucs!

Do we really think Reddick is gonna do his friend And mentor Larry Foote wrong?
Im sure he is working out and Foote already detailed he is pissed and ready to go earn a contract.
Im thinking anyone who is concerned still has cold feet from Randy Gregory.
Now will he be ELITE again, who knows, but they guy is gonna play barring injury.

Becoming part of the team, that’s why I would have wanted Reddick to be here. He was a disaster in NY, regardless of who was at fault. Just show up.

One fears the unknown That fear doesn’t have to be bad only. It’s easy to say the sky is falling. Positive attracts Positive.
Our drafting the last several years is bearing fruit. Stay positive

Adam…
Difference is that Randy’s snorkel is connected to a bong.

Hopefully Hasaan steers clears of Randy and his snorkel bong.

Every time I read about Bowles talking scheme it makes me shudder.
The last thing we need is for the rookies to get exposed to then infected by the wide open Swiss Cheese pass defense scheme.
Alas that is a certainty with Bowles leading the way.

Adam from NY, I just read that Randy Gregory got arrested for battery, I think.

It was the other ex Cowboy Hardy that was arrested for assaulting a family member.
