“That You Don’t See Much Out Of A Quarterback”

June 1st, 2025

Baker Mayfield is no Tom Brady or Jameis Winston.

That’s the word from one of his Tampa Bay teammates.

If you think Mayfield is going to fire up players with a big speech or be dissecting his comrades’ games to make them better, Mayfield is not your guy, so says Lavonte David.

Per David’s chat with Mina Kimes on her podcast, Mayfield is very different from his predecessor Tom Brady.

“Tom was a leader who, you know, he would talk to you. He’ll come to you, ‘Hey, this and that and that.’ Talk to you, more vocal type guy and get on you when you’re not doing something right, and stuff like that. But Baker is a lead by example type guy,” David said.

“That you don’t see much out of a quarterback. And, you know, when I saw that and the way he puts in work, the way he’s grinding out there at practice, his mentality. … I love it, though, man, just his grit, how he grinds and puts the team on his back type thing.”

“He’s not going to talk. He’s not going to give you the speech; he’s just going to go out there and prove it. And that’s what I love to see out of him.”

Mayfield is not the dude to rehearse for a pregame show; he won’t be eating his fingers anytime soon. And he won’t be getting into technique much with players like Brady did.

However, Joe was told by a reliable source that Mayfield got the ear of a struggling teammate last season and helped the guy get to a better place.

Mayfield will talk. It’s a just a different kind of leadership, as David noted, the kind less typical of an alpha QB.

Baker is the guy you’d want in a foxhole with you. No loudmouth theatrics just the real deal.

Do we miss “eating W’s”. How about “Check yo sheets”?

  2. Marine Buc Says:

    Baker is definitely a leader.

He led the NFL in turnovers…

    LOL!

Mayfield also threw for 4,500 yards, and 41.

  4. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

    41 Touchdowns.

  5. unbelievable Says:

When Winston led the league in INTs, it was 33 TDs – 30 INTs

When Baker led the league in INTs, it was 41 TDs – 16 INTs

Big difference. Still would like to cut that number in half though.

  6. View from 132 Says:

What’s he going to say? It is his current QB on his current team? That he’s too short? That he’s Jeff Garcia unless he wins a ring?

Baker is not like Brady. One was a great college QB trying to win a pro title.
One dominated the league for 20 years.

  7. SenileSenior Says:

Whatever Baker’s story we will be watching it unfold. That is fun stuff for me. Call me what you will, I love Baker as our “field general”.

  8. Bucsalltheway Says:

That person must be Kam Johnson king dropsie

  9. Jmarkbuc Says:

    View.

    Fair points all.

Brady earned his place in history. The recency bias is silly.

  10. Billlbuc Says:

Baker leads on the field more than off where as Brady is rah rah . Both work if you have the wins to back you up. Putting Winston in the piece makes no sense . Brady led and players didn’t want to let him down. Baker has players that will run through a wall with him and he will be the first one there . Both work as long as you win.

  11. Inwoodjeremy Says:

I like how Baker runs down field to throw a block for the RB and sparks the team or extends the play. But in the back of my mind I wonder how many times he can do it without getting smashed. That’s just who he is and when it works it’s great. Has Michael Pratt been getting any reps in? Haven’t heard anything from him. He has about the same game time experience as 5th year Trask.

  12. Rod Munch Says:

The Baker Boi(s) are triggered, how dare you write an article that doesn’t say Baker is the best QB in the history of the game. I mean Joe didn’t say anything that was even remotely negative, just that Baker isn’t the same as the last two QBs, but by not putting in the final paragraph that different means Baker is superior, well, that makes you a hater.

  13. Davyboy Says:

Some people seem to miss the all important point that when someone is successful like Brady, Mahomes & Montana there IS a SYSTEM, an ORGANIZATION in place that helps those athletes achieve that rare type of success. And anybody that says different doesn’t know much about how things work. They are just ignorant of what a good organization vs. a bad organization can do. Mahomes probably has the best coach in the league. Brady had one of the best coaches. Montana sure had a great coach. An example od a bad organization is D. Watson, he was one of the top qb’s in the league before he went to Cleveland. After Cleveland he became a joke, the worst qb in the league. You people that expect Baker to take a team all the way the year after you were supposed to win 4 games and that the GOAT left because he saw the drop in production coming and so did everybody else, aren’t being realistic. Remember, everybody was predicting 4 wins in 2023. We won 9. That’s quite a bit better. It takes a while to get a team ready to go all the way. A lot of things have to be in place. Be realistic. I realize you won’t be but…
Whenever things are in place he will get us there and this 3rd year just might be the year.

  14. Davyboy Says:

Munch is as delusional as he always is.

  15. Davyboy Says:

Somethings never change. Like Baker proving him wrong on everything he’s ever uttered about him, everything. Pitiful

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @RodMuncher

It’s time for you to look in the mirror. The ONLY “triggered” response I read here is YOURS!

  17. Rod Munch Says:

stpetebucsfan – you’re the dope saying you’d rather have Baker in a foxhole with you, over this guy called Brady. LOL! But yeah, you dopes aren’t triggered at all.

    Muncher,
I thought is was an interesting take on Mayfield. Nothing more or less. You on the other hand have a long history of being anti Baker. Not many in the Bucs organization agree with you. Baker is the toast of Tampa Bay and you are, well……….just some guy who pretends to be a football analyst on this website. You will never live down your flaming ignorance about Mayfield. Many of us have kept your receipts.

  19. Davyboy Says:

Munch is scared to death to debate. He has no truth, only delusions of grandeur. Lmao

  20. Bucblind Says:

He actually called someone else a dope, hilarious 😂

  21. Davyboy Says:

I remember when Baker trucked Bobby Wagner. I’m pretty sure Brady would never do that. I’m betting that’s what stpete was talking about with the foxhole comment but he’s a dope to the dope.

  22. Davyboy Says:

It’s called projection munch. Do a little research on yourself

  23. garro Says:

    “eating his fingers anytime soon”

Wow Jaymiss the Clown has been gone for…How long now?…That still makes me cringe! I still gotta think at least some of his teammates went home and said to their wives and girlfriends… “Did you see what tha tclown did?”

    Go Bucs!

  24. heyjude Says:

Love Baker, just the way he is. No drama while keeping it real.

  25. Hodad Says:

There’s more than one way to lead. We’re all making a mistake tho comparing 40 year old Brady with 20 something year old Mayfield. Tom’s leadership, and play was much different when he was with the Pats at 28 than he was with the Pats at 39. Much different than the Brady with the Bucs. I think if compared 28 year old Brady, with 28 year old Baker they would be more the same.

  26. heyjude Says:

    Hodad – Agreed.

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

    RodMuncher

Have you ever been in a foxhole?

  28. Jeffrey Becker Says:

marine – cousins had same number of turnovers in four fewer games, so cousins led the nfl in turnovers

  29. Jeffrey Becker Says:

and will levis had 18 turnovers in just 12 games

  30. ForeignBucsFan Says:

My understanding with turnovers is that we use TD to Ints ratio to decide whether a QB’s Intercepts are acceptable or not. In isolation thats fine but I see a lot of comments about “16 Ints, the most in the league”. Surely if you are comparing one QB’s Ints to other QB Ints you must look at number of pass attempts vs Ints to get an apples to apples comparison. I don’t have access to the numbers and I’m hoping someone here does but racking up 4500 yards and 41 TD’s it seems to me that baker probably threw more pass attempts than others. There were a number of QB’s who threw 12 ints on the season but how many pass attempts did they throw ? Does this make sense (Im foreign !)

  31. Bucs33Saints14! Says:

Argent says “hold your head up”. Baker says “hold your head down — and get that first down”! Go Baker!

  32. Rod Munch Says:

stpetebucsfan – yes, 69 of them.

  33. Oneilbuc Says:

Unbelievable. It’s a different sceam with a much better o line, a running game and better receivers in the slots. And let’s not forget a much weaker division and a better defense. And know we have a more balanced offense so Baker Mayfield is not ask to throw 45 to 50 times a game up the field. I still believe if the bucs would have given him a running game and let him throw 30 to 35 times at most a game he would have still been here. It’s just funny to me how y’all blamed Jamies for every lost back then and none of y’all cared about the running game or that 32 ranked defense and now all of sudden with Baker Mayfield the running game, defense, o line and coaching matters so much now. When Baker threw the ball 40 or more times and we lose y’all ask why they didn’t run the ball and it was the coaches fault or the defense. Now the defense is finally at fault now days. And I’m talking to the bucs fans that were here back then.

  34. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

And here comes OneillJameisslurper peddling his Jameis man crush on cue. Jameis was a doofis and made horrible decisions on the field all on his own. Nobody made him throw all those interceptions. He was almost un coachable doing what ever he wanted. At least Mayfield has proven himself to be a very good qb. I would take 41 tds to 16 ints any year. Only reason why some of those turnovers hurt us is the defense couldn’t stop Skirt Cousins, Purdy, Mahomies and Daniel’s. Oneill is the worst fanboi of them all

  35. Oneilbuc Says:

DavidBig. I get it you know nothing about football all you see is the players the meadi likes. Everything I said was the truth and I can back it all up with facts. Some of y’all act like you know these guys personally and if Baker Mayfield was so great then why did he end up playing for 4 different teams in his career? Any time Baker Mayfield is asked to throw more than 40 times we always lose. So please stop it’s a different sceam and a different situation while playing in a much easier conference. So I will ask you is it NFC Championship or bust ? Or you just going to keep blaming everyone else but Baker Mayfield just like the Cowboys did with Romo and Dak?

  36. Oneilbuc Says:

And also Dak was actually a MVP candidate and they still couldn’t get to a conference championship. With the weapons we have Jalen Hurts would have won a Superbowl by now. Brock Puridy prove that with weapons he can get you to a conference championship and a Superbowl Baker Mayfield haven’t proven that yet. When are we going to dominate this weak division and stop blaming the defense for every time our offense go entire quarters scoring only 3 points. How many 3 and outs did we have in the first half against Washington vs the points our defense gave up ?
