Todd Bowles Warned Us

April 24th, 2025

Ohio State WR Emeka Egbuka.

Joe couldn’t believe his ears last month.

Todd Bowles sat at the owners meetings in Palm Beach and told the assembled NFL media that he couldn’t pass on a stud receiver because to win in the NFL you have to score points and he can always find a way to coach up a defender.

Boy, he wasn’t lying with the Bucs grabbing Emeka Egbuka of Ohio State tonight at No. 19 overall.

Joe is telling you, watch Egbuka’s highlights. He looks exactly like Chris Godwin. Not only is Egbuka insurance for Godwin, he is also the future, and maybe a peek into the Bucs’ offense this year.

If new Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard planned to pound the ball, would the Bucs have drafted a receiver?

  1. Bubby Says:

    Bring back Spytek

  2. lambchop Says:

This draft is DEEP on defense, that’s the rationale here. Todd feels he can throw bodies at the defensive holes.

  3. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Love the pick. Now, let’s go stack this defense.

  4. Rastaferian Jenkins Says:

I understand the pick, 100%. We have by far the best receiver room in the league and have set our offense for the future. The rest of this draft is all defense. We got a luxury pick, now time to pick for BPA on defense

  5. PNW Buc Says:

    Defense defense defense.
If eggbuka is that good, why didn’t he come out last year?

  6. Zman Says:

Yes. Super safe pick. Can return kicks. Versatile wr. We r set for 3 plus years at wr.

  7. lambchop Says:

Egbuka is the #2 WR in the draft, he was BPA.

  8. Delson Says:

I called it. Wr or CB in round 1 n 2. Smart pick 4 the future. Solidifies the wr corp. No more question marks in McMillan

  9. MadMax Says:

LISTEN UP….Evans with the hamstring and age, Godwin coming back from injuries, but if healed and we just paid him, so a lot of hope there. WE NEEDED WR HELP, A STAR!

    Hopefully he turns into one.

  10. Bucsfan1988 Says:

What a PURELY MORONIC pic when you need DEFENSE!!!

They say this guy is Godwin 2.0 ,..

WHO CARES when you just resigned Godwin to a nice contract!!!!!
If Godwin has issues then why the hell did you resign him then???

You getting this guy to “replace” CG14 ?????

    Makes ZEROOOOOOO sense!!!

Especially when you have the WR from Washington that really matures at the end of the season last year???

I’m sorry, but this is utter stupidity here!!

  11. MadMax Says:

    Baker needs his weapons

  12. David Kilmer Says:

Wow!!! Certainly hope there is some quality D players in the next couple rounds. The receiver from O S looks great but man the defense. I don’t know. Yes the offense will need to score 40 points a game cause without more D players the defense is gonna give up 30 plus

  13. Zman Says:

PNW, do you watch college football? How about to win a natty or he played in Marvs shadow. Egbuka was a first rounder last year. He’s a safe pick.

  14. Alstott40 Says:

Apparently Bowles can field an amazing defense(so we’re told)he just needs the players. But we choose not to get him those players in round 1….

  15. cho Says:

    WOW…

I mean… trust JL at all costs. One of the top 3 GMs in football. Would rather get an elite player for a position we’ll be thin at in a couple of seasons, than a mediocre or injured player to feel a need.

Best GMs go BPA. If this was BPA, I’m all for it.

  16. Knowyourspot Says:

bucsfan1988 – just complaining but doesn’t even know McMillions name? How dare you doubt Jason Licht

  17. Zman Says:

Sawyer or jtt in round 2 please.

  18. Bucco Bruce Says:

I’m surprised they didn’t grab Barron who is one of few dbs who doesn’t have injury issues and can literally play at any position in the db room. On top of that everyone had the bucs if they did pick a wr being McMillan if there and Golden if not and they passed on Golden for Ebuka. I kinda wanna know why. They had pick of the litter of all possible defensive and offensive players that most thought wouldn’t be there and they left field picked a future #2 or #3 wr.

  19. jarrett Says:

    JASON LIT HAS TO GO.

FIRST HE DOESNT OFFER SAQUON ANY DEAL IN FREE AGENCY.

THEN HE PASSES ON SANDERS AT #19

BRO…. WTF ARE WE DOING WE DO NOT NEED A RECEIVER IN THE FIRST ROUND

  20. Eric Says:

It’s a passing league. With all the rule changes nobody can play defense.

    Go bucs.

  21. Durango 95 Says:

Not sure about the comparison to Godwin. I don’t see that physical aspect but this kid has mucho juice. Yards after the catch, QB friendly. Great pick.

  22. Pewter Power Says:

I guess Bucs are planning to be top 5 in points scored again and I’m down with that. 5 more picks to go I’m gonna trust Licht in the 2nd and 3rd round plus he found Bucky in the 4th. We’re good

  23. C-spann4 Says:

This a one of the dumbest draft decisions I have ever seen. The Defense is trash. Offense is not the problem

  24. MMJ Says:

Such a trash pick. Will Johnson, Jihaad Campbell and Mike Green all available and you draft a receiver when you have 4 dependable ones right now

  25. Saskbucs Says:

Some good comments here that make me like the pick more… also some ludicrous comments, that’s satire or sarcasm or something right Jarrett?

  26. Les Says:

Better go defence rest of the way. Thought for sure edge rusher , corner .

  27. Common sense Says:

This pick feels like wasting a 2nd rd pick on a qb when we already had Brady. Trying to be cute and plan for the future while still competing in the present. Defense needs help. It doesn’t matter how many weapons offense has

  28. lambchop Says:

This is insurance for WR injuries. Last year we struggled when Chris Godwin was out and Mike Evans was hurt. The WRs have consistently been injured at some point. Both are getting older as well. This is a safe pick.

  29. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Everyone relax. The rest of the draft will be defense. He was BPA and it’s a scoring league.

  30. Panhandle Buc Says:

I trust JL and his scouts! He must know what we don’t about the other prospects. Mike is getting older and Chris is coming off another big injury. Score more points…period!

  31. Bucsfan1988 Says:

    C-SPANN,

    Bingoooooo!!!!!
Washington Commanders never punted the ball once in the playoff game!!
Know why?? Cuz our defense sucked!!! No edge pash rush, crappy cornerback play, and lack of inside linebacker depth….

But let’s make sure we go & get ANOTHER wide receiver that’s Godwin 2.0 RIGHT AFTER WE JUST RESIGNED GODWIN!!!!!!!

    Un-freaken believable 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

  32. White Tiger Says:

Wow! Unexpected, but what a sneaky good pick!

This kid is ready to start, he’s so smooth, team first attitude, and has such high football IQ – solid, complete slot/inside guy. Definitely ready to play innediateky.

  33. Orlando Kevin Says:

This is an offensive driven QB league now. Last year Evans and Godwin had injury issues. Jalen and Emeka are the future WR’s to keep Baker long term.

  34. Kidfloflo Says:

Jarrett what a bad take…your crying we don’t need a WR but want to draft a QB who won’t even see the field for 3 years minimum!? more if Baker is Baker

  35. TheBigSombreo Says:

Edbuka has great hands… need that for Bakers sometimes wild throws…

Bowles knows defense enough that he will draft them all day Friday and Saturday.

Too many DTs and LBs were taken in round 1.

Edbuka is the 2nd best WR in the draft…. NOT A BAD PICK AT ALL!

You guys will love him this Fall when he keeps getting TB 1st downs.

  36. SenileSenior Says:

In Licht I trust. Best Player Available.

    Go Bucs!!

  37. Bnasty25 Says:

Does anyone remember how bad we were when Evans and Godwin were gone?

  38. Les Says:

Surprised when we need a edge rusher and a corner another corner down the road to replace whitehead .

  39. Jw94buc Says:

Baker has an embarrassment of riches now. Every remaining pick must be defense!

  40. Les Says:

    Safety down the road

  41. Aqualung Says:

I’m pleased. At least Todd knows how bad his defense is, no one knows why they do better in second halves of games, can’t cover a slant, can’t rush a passer no matter who the players are…

    Score more points. I’m down.

  42. Whiteboy Says:

What a horrible pick. We lost last year due to Corner and Defensive End. We desperately need a safety opposite Winfield and a linebacker. Instead we add to our deepest position on the team.

  43. MadMax Says:

Everybody freaking out over nothing….WE LANDED A MUCH NEEDED GREAT WR!

Please do your homework and get with the program. WE NEED TO SCORE!!!

HOW DO YOU GET THERE WITH EVANS HAM INJURIES AND AGING, PLUS GODWIN WITH HIS INJURIES? HOPE? YEAH THERES HOPE, AND THEY MIGHT COME BACK STRONG, OR MAY NOT….

    i just smdh!

  44. Hodad Says:

I wanted Golden, but I like this pick. When I saw Golden at the draft dressed in gold made me realize why the Bucs chose Ebuka. He was home with his family, humble hard worker, and now a Buccaneer. Welcome aboard!

  45. Rod Munch Says:

I like the pick – WR’s are one of the most expensive positions in football and the Bucs can’t always expect to get hometown discounts. Most teams, for Evans or Godwin, are paying $30m a year – you need some guys on cheap deals if you’re going to resign Baker. Also, if you think Baker is the future, then you want to make sure you have guys for him to throw to, cause if you don’t make moves, in 2 years when his deal is up, you might be without Evans and Godwin. Now with McMillian and Double-E, you’re showing Baker you’re not going to leave him high and dry (same goes for any QB).

I’d have liked this pick a ton more if they were able to slide back a bit and pick-up a 3rd or something, but I have no issues with the pick at all.

  46. adam from ny Says:

wake up guys…it’s a good pick

  47. Doughboy Says:

Reminds me more of Amon St. Brown than Goodwin.

  48. Aqualung Says:

Algo ended my night. Go Bucs. I liked the pick. Score points. Can’t stop the other team so……

  49. Aaron Says:

JL has 20+ people spending 100hrs a week prepping for the draft…I’ll have to trust him that he thinks his current DL roster is better than what was available at our 19th pick…The Bucs saw what life looked like when Evans and Godwin were out…I think that scared them into this pic…

    Go Bucs!!!

    ———-

Or maybe Licht is trying to win now and knows the defense is going to take a lot longer than a year to restock, and the best chance to win is by stacking the offense.

  51. ballwasher61 Says:

Don’t care about Hunter this kid IS the best receiver in this draft and maybe a few others. He is and has been a rock

  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Rod Munch Says
“I like the pick – WR’s are one of the most expensive positions in football…”

    That’s a fair point.

Because of pain issues, I laid down to rest this afternoon…ended up sleeping right through our pick. In fact, when I finally woke up, I forgot about the draft.

And when I finally remembered and immediately checked…I was shocked.

I understand that with Godwin having gone down and Mike getting older, we needed a WR. I just feel Defense is more of a priority this year.

But…your point is a valid one, and it is a deep draft for defense.

    I trust Licht…but it’s a head scratcher.

  53. Aqualung Says:

    Whiteboy- take a laxative.

  54. jarrett Says:

BAKER CHOKED IN BACK TO BACK PLAYOFF GAMES.

FIRST THE PICK ENDING IT IN DETROIT.

THEN THE FUMBLE COSTING US VS THE COMMANDERS.

THE ONLY WAY TO LIGHT A FIRE UNDER BAKER WOULD’VE BEEN DRAFTING SANDERS AT 19 OVERALL

ALSO. WHY DIDN’T JASON LIT EVER GO AFTER SAQUON BARKLEY. TOO BUSY OVERPAYING WINFIELD JR.

WE SEE HOW THAT ONE FREE AGENT SIGNING WORKED OUT FOR PHILLY.

  55. Bucco Bruce Says:

Even if you compare him to Godwin which I don’t we didn’t spend a 1st rounder on Godwin now did we!? We have been since I can remember been terrible at DB and Edge and even if we pick a WR why not finally get the guy who can be a burner and have a full gambit at WR in Golden. No we pick a slower, pure slot at #19. You don’t draft slot receiver in the 1st round especially not in the top 20-25.

  56. Jim McHugh Says:

Capital letters convinced me! Baker sucks.
    Grow up.

  57. ballwasher61 Says:

jarrett go back to being invisable

  58. drdneastup Says:

You don’t waste a first round pick on a route running slot receiver. Another level of stupid for Licht.

  59. Jeff Says:

With Godwin likely to miss the 2025 season, this was a brilliant move by Light. Would have been foolish to rely on the elderly Evans and habitually injured Godwin.

  60. Aqualung Says:

    The maroons are self-identifying.

  61. D-Mac Says:

It’s past your bed time Jarrett. Go to sleep.

  62. Aqualung Says:

[Please be patient. Joe’s just a little busy this evening with media availablities from Jason Licht and Emeka Egbuka not to mention all the stories he’s pumping out. Joe can’t exactly ask Licht or Egbuka to please put a hold on what they are doing so Joe can dig comments out of the friggin’ pending queue from people who go by handles. Tonight is easily the busiest night of the offseason for Joe. Sorry. — Joe]

  63. Just Saying Says:

Emeka Egbuka is an Ohio State LEGEND, setting the all time record for OSU in receptions and receiving yards That is massive. D the rest of the way

  64. Saskbucs Says:

Someone said it … Licht is not an all in guy.

He’s got one foot in the now and one foot in the future.

I would argue his SB win is from an all in move. I guess he doesn’t feel the team is quite ready but I still strongly believe with the aging Vea Evans and David… it’s now.

I think this kid will be a great WR and am encouraged by him having records at WRU Ohio State but doesn’t make sense to me for winning this year. If we are protecting against injuries we might as well have drafted an OT (too many were gone) because Wirfs is probably our biggest injury worry. Really think we needed Barron or an edge. Couple edges dropping …

  65. Woodman Says:

JARRET what are you Falcons troll idiot?

  66. It’s brutal out here Says:

Orlando Hodad & Munch have it sorted. Even Bowles now realizes the name of the game is scoring points. I love our skill position depth this ensures it remains a strength vs drafting for need later and getting less capable/older/more tread worn alternatives.

  67. Aqualung Says:

I don’t know why every post I make goes to the mod. That’s why I mention Algo. Rapid fire live nights, I can’t participate in, nor some of the scrumptious dialogue that is in real time. If that changes I wouldn’t have to mention it.
