Bucs Say Dominik Was Off The Record

June 17th, 2010

Buccaneers new media general Jonathan Grella has informed JoeBucsFan.com that Mark Dominik’s in depth speech and Q&A session with season ticket holders this week was off-the-record and not for media publication.

The session was recorded by WhatTheBuc.net,  which is a long-standing Bucs fan site run by a part-time local media personality known as “Old School,” who does fill-in host work on WQYK-AM 1010, a reputable sports radio station.

Joe heard the audio, knew it was from a media guy, and had no reason to think it was bogus or obtained improperly. So Joe listened to the audio and posted a snippet of Dominik’s comments about Donald Penn.

To be blunt, Joe has spoken with “Old School” from time to time and there are few nicer guys or bigger boosters of the Bucs than “Old School.” Joe is confident beyond words this recording was not done to ambush Dominik or performed for some malicious reason. That’s not “Old School.” He doesn’t roll like that.

All that said, Joe does hold himself to standards. And if the Buccaneers say something was off-the-record, then Joe will honor their statement. So Joe has removed the post.

What Joe really believes, well, he’s just going to keep that off the record. But Joe does suggest the Bucs pay closer attention to what’s going on in the media. They do pay people for that.

    JoeBushLeague.com is up for business….

  2. Not a Rocket Surgeon Says:

    Karma.

  3. Patrick Says:

Joe, what happened to the article of the interview with Dominik?? I was typing a post and then I just noticed it was gone.

  4. lightningbuc Says:

    Joe,

Duh, everyone knows that public Q&A’s are always off the record. It took me five minutes to quit laughing long enough to post. Gee, I sure hope Penn didn’t visit JBF today so he doesn’t know the Bucs think he’s a lazy fat ass. This, folks, is the Glazer Buffoon Show at its finest! Classic!

  5. bucfanjeff Says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t “off the record” conversations noted as such prior to the interview? If so, and if there wasn’t such a disclaimer, leaving the post is ethically sound. I realize there is a fine line with journalistic reporting, but if you’re bending over and taking one from Team Glazer, I’m thoroughly disappointed.

  6. bucfanjeff Says:

…and let me remind you…it was a PUBLIC (not def con 5 private) q & a with SEASON TICKET HOLDERS. He was fair game as where his comments.
    Joe should be ashamed.

  7. RahDomDaBest Says:

Funny thing is, Mark Dummynik purposely leaked that Penn was too fat for a long term contract.

You guys think Penn will return next season now?

Hopefully Penn signs the 110% 6 month deal and presses on to a more professional outfit.

  8. admin Says:

    Joe here,

LightningBuc – Public q&a’s are hardly off the record routinely. Crap, teams even invite media to those sometimes. Joe’s covered them himself.

BucfanJeff – No bending over. Joe’s just going to give the Bucs the benefit of the doubt that it was not for publication. Joe has talked to the media guy who recorded it, and Joe wouldn’t bet money that it was off the record. But Joe feels compelled, for his own ethical standars, to honor the Bucs’ word that it was. Believe Joe, if he was catering to Team Glazer, this whole site wouldn’t exist.

    RahDomDaBest,

“Hopefully Penn signs the 110% 6 month deal and presses on to a more professional outfit.”

And you show once agian that you are more concerned with hating on Dom and than the Glazers than the Bucs being successful.

The bottom line is he’s right Penn is a good LT that has a problem keeping his weight under control. Its not like that is some big secret.

  10. lightningbuc Says:

    Joe,

That was sarcasm on my part. I know they are on the record. Why, unless explicitly told, would one think otherwise. Me laughing was at the Bucs realizing that Dominik had publicly called Penn a lazy fat ass to a couple of season ticket holders. He is probably being reprimanded as we speak.

  11. lightningbuc Says:

    D$,

The quote is still up at PFT. Dominik never says he’s a good LT. Just that he’s disappointed, he expects better, he digressed (which I believe he meant regressed). Not exactly smart if you’re trying to get the guy to camp.

  12. BigMacAttack Says:

Good Job Joe, smart move, keeping in their good graces. Can’t afford to lose you credentials that were so hard to get in the first place. You found that comment by MD and were on it quick. Joe, you are the MAN, I mean Men.

I Like Dominick’s comments about Penn and it is the truth, in reference to the weight gain. I know everybody calls the Glazers cheap, etc. but it clearly looks to me like Mark Dominick is running this show all the way. The Glazers only take care of damage control when it comes to their stellar reputation. It is obviously a full time job here in Tampa. They must have given up on their image in the UK.

    Raheem’s Dreams =10 wins in 2010′

    Raheem’s Dreams =10 wins in 2010′

    are you KIDDING ME?

I am a Bucs fan but am disgusted with this outfit running my team. The poorer they do the greater the chance of their replacement.

  14. Radio Mushmouth Says:

The Bucs are lying to cover Dumbinik’s stupidity ….AGAIN.

Any suprise here??? I think not. This organization needs changes from the top down…and i mean the VERY top ( Glazerhouses )

  15. JimBuc Says:

lightningbug — Dom is not being reprimanded. That is funny. He delivered exactly the message the Bucs intended to deliver. Don’t be so easily fooled.

  16. thomas Says:

What? You mean there are positions being taken behind closed doors with theis org that are not for public consumption?

I thought these guys were totally straight-shooters. There is much being tallked about with management and ownership that they dont want the public hearing.

THAT IS WHY WE READ ACTIONS AND BETWEENN THE LINES! You sheep must feel foolish.

  17. Dave Says:

I applaud Joe for the testicles to handle this the way he did. You’re going to take some heat Joe but I’m impressed. You always claim to be a journalist and you handled this like one

  18. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Disclaimer: all future comments made by Radio Mushmouth are “off the record”

  19. JimBuc Says:

    Thomas – — – – oooooooooooooooooooo . . . it’s all a conspiracy . . .oooooooooooooo

  20. Joe Says:

    Dave:

Thanks for the kind words. Joe appreciates it.

Joe could have been an arse but he chose not to. To Joe, the term “off the record” is sacrosanct. The stuff Joe had heard and learned through back channels and from reputable people would make your head spin.

But Joe heard various juicy nuggets after being told they were “off the record.” And so they shall remain. Unless someone goes on the record.

And not neccesarily with Greta Van Susteren.

  21. thomas Says:

BTW – Joe I applaud the way that you handled this situation. If the org asks you to pull the article b/ they felt that it was an off-the-record statement, you do it.

What I think however is: How dumb are these guys? The comment wasnt that terrible and the cat was out of the bag. To ask that it be retracted draws more attention to it and makes them look like boobs and incompetent – again – are they not smart enough to let the dust settle?

Dont they know that Penn and his agent are going to find out? Rightfully so. If Penn takes a harder line approach and really digs in – maybe says ths is why – this could be a terminable offense for Dom. God I hope so.

  22. JimBuc Says:

Didn’t the Bucs just get a new PR guy? Hmmmmmmm

  23. lightningbuc Says:

    Jimby,

If that’s exactly the message the Bucs want him to deliver, then why all this off the record nonsense? Have another glass of Kool-Aid.

  24. spent Says:

    thanks for the kind words!

  25. jarrett Says:

our team is so amateur hour

  26. thomas Says:

not according to Jimbuc Jarrett. he thinks they are real pros.

  27. BigMacAttack Says:

Yea I think Dominick is Pro too. Sorry.

I didn’t at first but as time goes on the more I like Dom. Maybe I just think the Name Dom sounds kool as in koolaid.

Last year the Bucs sucked, but it’s all up in the air now. No one knows how this team will perform. At this point it’s all guess work. But based on last season and this year’s acquisitions, the Jets should be a powerhouse and Rex Ryan was a great hiring. The Bucs should have looked in that direction. I still the Bucs could possibly be a top 10 defense under Raheem this year.

Grape Koolaid is good with Stoli Orange.

  28. Two Dog Says:

The audio quality of Morris’s press conference is pathetic. I wonder why Grella doesn’t address that problem. Maybe he doesn’t listen to it. Maybe Joe could do an article on it and movtivate them to fix it. I have mentioned it to PR. Zero response. His speech is often out of whack with is mouth. The quality of print on Bucs.com and PR is much lower than on your site. Eye strain comes with the package.

  29. BucsNBeer Says:

Pretty cannibalistic of you, don’t you think? Or do all reporters eat their own?

  30. Mike Says:

Joe is a pathetic pansy to be scared by the Bucs into censoring his website. What a loser. I’m never coming to this site again.

  31. Joe Says:

    Two Dog:

First off, thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.

Joe’s guess is that with the new site, there might be something off using the flash video? Just a guess but not sure.

  32. Joe Says:

LOL Joe volunteered to take that down. There was no shakedown. Per the Bucs and from what Joe learned, Mark Dominik may not have been aware that he was recorded or if he knew, what the recording would be used for. Joe would rather err on the side of caution.

  33. Louie Says:

Isn’t this the same crap they did with AB (float reasons why they didn’t resign him)?

If they are REALLY worried about his weight, then put a clause in the contract to protect themselves — it happens all the time. This is just another lame excuse to not spend money.

  34. RahDomDaBest Says:

@ BigMac “I still the Bucs could possibly be a top 10 defense under Raheem this year.

Grape Koolaid is good with Stoli Orange.”

Glad you have an excuse too!

  35. RahDomDaBest Says:

    @2Dogs

“Maybe Joe could do an article on it and movtivate them to fix it. ”

    LMAO!!!

  36. Jake Says:

I was invited to an identical gathering among season ticket holders last Friday. I asked the same question to Dominik about Penn and he gave the same response about the weight issue that he gave this week. If Dominik is so concerned about these statements becoming public and attributed to him, than maybe he ought to be a bit more reserved in how he answers these questions at public gatherings.

  37. George C. Costanza Says:

whether something’s off the record nor not requires an agreement (or verbal assent) by both parties — the person giving the information and the person receiving it … you know that, Joe.

  38. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Costanza – The guy who recorded the audio, who is a fill-in host on CBS Sports Radio locally, posted it on his website and after further review of the circumstances decided he wasn’t following proper protocol, and he took it down. …Joe took it down after investigating the situation following a tip from another media member. Joe was never asked to remove the audio in any shape, form or inference.

There rules among the media, written and unwritten. Joe was just doing what he believed was the right thing.

  39. CalicoJack Says:

Glad-handing. Just sayin’… as I see all of the 620 banners up in here…
