Man-To-Man League

October 21st, 2019

Pass defense analysis.

It seems, for whatever reason, there is an 11th commandment that Bucs defensive backs shalt play soft coverage.

And it seems that’s not what the league does.

And who would know better than a former quarterback?

As Joe mentioned previously, he was watching the Raiders-Packers game yesterday. The color analyst was former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo (pride of Eastern Illinois University).

Now Joe sees each gameday Bucs fans going wild on Twitter about the Bucs’ defensive backs and their soft coverage. Joe can just see the same fans gritting their teeth in anger. Understandable.

So Romo mentioned something that got Joe to reverse the broadcast a few moments to jot down Romo’s quote.

“This league is man-to-man,” Romo said of pass defense. “If you don’t have guys who can play man-to-man, it makes it tough.”

Joe immediately thought of the Bucs. Could it be all these defensive backs the Bucs drafted the past four years are not suited for man-to-man or press-man?

Joe isn’t sure if that is the answer or not.

Joe does know two things: The Bucs, as Bucco Bruce Arians himself noted, have defensive backs who play “soft.”

And the Bucs have the worst pass defense in the NFL.

Coincidence?

The league is a man to man league yet glazers roll with soft little boys

  2. Anonymous Says:

8 secondary players in the top 4 rounds
4 corners in the top 2 rounds

Not sure how something hasn’t worked out there yet other than Gump n company not knowing how to evaluate that position at all.

Naw Joe, we were sold a bill of goods dating back to the VH3 pick. Our DBs are press corners coming out of college… Right? I mean all we heard last two years is Mike Smith plays a soft coverage. I would ask all the time.. why did we draft press corners if we play off coverage? Because Grimes I was told.
Just lame excuses from our beloved team.
It sucks to hear now that we don’t have press corners. Are u kidding me?? JFC this sucks!
At this point I’m losing it, just like the BUCS on any given Sunday

Lol… why are the Bucs always out of phase with the game, by the time they catch up the league will have moved on. Leadership at the top playing follow the leader

The Bucs have drafted solid Man coverage DB’s & used them in Zone coverage schemes….With thought being it’s easier to teach Zone concepts than get guys to man-up in bump&run / pay on an island – if it’s not in there nature.

You can get away with doing that & going bend-don’t break zone, if your getting consistent pressure from your front 4 & creating turnovers..But the Bucs are’t doing either with the consistency it takes to be successful in today’s NFL.

Hargreaves is the worst “CB1,” in the league. It’s embarrassing.

You should be incarcerated for using CB1 and vh3bust in same post even calling him the worst…. those 2 items just don’t belong together regardless of context.

Tony Romo makes a lot of sense; today’s NFL is ‘man-to-man’. However, that doesn’t mean that the Bucs’ Secondary doesn’t have the talent to play man-to-man. I think they do, but that VHIII & MJ Stewart … as well as our DBs’ inexperience … have held them back to this point.

With Ryan Smith now back, with Jamel Dean now healed up, with SMB gaining some game-time experience, I think we’ll see a new Secondary lineup starting against the Titans … Davis, Smith, Whitehead, Edwards, Dean & SMB getting the lion’s share of the defensive snaps. HOPEFULLY they’re ALL healed up, and either Smith or Dean or SMB steps up to pair with Davis outside, while the other two share Nickel & Dime duties.

Todd Bowles clearly intended to play a bunch of man-to-man and press based on what we saw in preseason. Even in our first 2 games we saw it quite a bit more than in these last 4 games. SMB has gotten quite a few more snaps in these last 2 games, and it looks like MJ Stewart has been shelved. IF Dean or Smith is ready by the Titans game, I expect to see one of them replace VHIII & play a lot more man-to-man. If not, Tannehill’s 80% short passing completion rate will eat us alive.

Sure, Mike Washington, Ricky Reynolds, Donnie Abraham, Ronde Barber, Brian Kelly, and Aqib Talib were backup quality.

People have been crying about Gump for years.

I already laid out what the drafts would have looked like if run by an online JBF poll. We’re all collectively a better football mind than anyone running that office the last 10 years

VHIII vs Julio! Vs. Thomas! Vs. Shepard! Vs. whoever is a mismatch in man coverage. We were able to look the other way under Smitty’s rainbow defensive coverages. Now, we can obviously see that it’s the player.
One of these youngsters needs to step up BIG TIME!

MJ Stewart… what was Licht thinking…

  23. DayOnePaul Says:

Our mouths dropped open when Licht’s took Stewart in the second round. It’s proven out that the disbelief was justified. Either he or Carlton could have been had in the third. Licht just keeps trying to be the smartest guy in the room, and his results prove over and over that he’s far from it. But he’s got those Glazer children fooled. And the money just keeps rolling in…
