Jameis Leads In QB Camp Reps, But Not With First Team

August 1st, 2018

The quarterback shuffle continues at One Buc Palace through six days of training camp, and Dirk Koetter dove a little deeper on that after practice today.

Simply stated, Jameis Winston has the lead when it comes to snaps, but not when it comes to the first-team variety. Jameis has gotten a solid percentage of work with the “1s” and that’s got a lot to do with Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Koetter quipped that having a “27-year veteran quarterback” means there’s more room for Jameis with the top guys. “[Fitzpatrick] doesn’t need quite as many reps, so we still can get Jameis work with the first group,” Koetter said. “If you just counted them up every day, Jameis is still getting the most reps every day, barely, in camp. But also, we can’t forget about Ryan Griffin. I mean, he needs his reps. He’s one play away from being in there.”

While the three-game suspension of America’s Quarterback was a nightmare ruling for the franchise, having Fitzpatrick here healthy and very familiar with the offense seems to have created the best-possible alternative for the Bucs to be ready for Week 1 — and Week 4.

    No surprise here Joe……..

  2. Eric Says:

Dirk knows his only chance is to get Jameis back and playing like he did the later part of last year.

    Which was outstanding.

  3. Robert Says:

can j dubya even play in preseason?

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Lol

Koetter doesn’t care about last year any more

….. He just cares about SURVIVING the fist three games before Jameis gets back…….

If this team falls 0 – 3…. Season over!

I heard on the Dan Patrick show this morning that the odds of the bucs reaching the SB is 125 to 1……lol

Hell…the bucs are worse than the Browns and they’re at 80…

    How low can you go!!!!!!!

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    “27-year veteran quarterback”

    LoL

  6. Walter Seidel Says:

Still waiting for Joe to do a Winston poll.

  7. Trench War Says:

Personally, I feel this might work out better for Winston. By taking a backseat and watching a veteran QB run the same offense, it might help in his development. He doesn’t have to worry so much of Fitz taking his job permanently, so in that respect watching Fitz handle his duty with professionalism can only teach Winston in his own development. He never actually had a chance to sit and watch, so he should be soaking in all the info he can get from this.

  8. Jman5 Says:

I guess Bucs are going to have to see if Urban Meyer likes him when he’s hired next year

  9. Robert Says:

joe has done winstons poll many times

  10. Jeffbuc Says:

We get it Walter for some reason you have to have a winston poll. You post that on every story. What exactly do you want to find out that you can’t get from the comment section. 10% of posters hate him no matter what he does and think we should release him immediately and just sign some guy off the street and he will do just as good. . And the other 90% realize he is going to be are starting quarterback and like him or not are going to support him since we support the bucs.

  11. Alanbucsfan Says:

Is Jameis a better talent than Fitzpatrick? Yes or no?
Then if he is healthy and eligible, he plays week 4-
The rest of it is argumentative speculation.
If you’re Koetter, are you going to tell your team and your qb that I don’t trust my franchise qb to start on a short week even though he is healthy and eligible because he might be rusty????

  12. Walter Seidel Says:

Jeffbuc, you’re wrong, sport. I’ve mentioned it ONCE before, but the suggestion for such a poll has been proffered many times by others. And your 10% is stupidly wrong. Joe? Do the poll and let’s see. #nicholascarlson

  13. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

Why throw chum to the _at_rs?
Fill first blank with an H or G😉

  14. Not there yet Says:

10% is about right, half of the fake posters were new right after the Winston issue heated up. Honestly the polls don’t matter, if 90% of people are still talking about how much they hate Winston in season then 90% of you are the problem. Off-season is over it’s about eating W’s now 😂

  15. JimmyT Says:

Jeff Buc, 10% hate Jameis? More like 90% of these so called fans. I’d like to remind all the haters that this team had NO D, NO RUNNING GAME & No Kicker early in the season and really u couldn’t count on Murray for 45 yd plus kicks. Had we had a D, we win at BUFALO because of Jameis, we win AT GREEN BAY because of Jameis but the D laid down after Jameis threw the go ahead TD. The Jameis haters didn’t blame the crappy D, they blamed a 2nd quarter fumble by Jameis. And finally w a kicker against the Pats at home we win that game as well. A QB MUST have support. Drew Brees went 7-9 3 straight years because of no RUNNING GAME AND D. Worst case the Bucs should have been 8-8 last year. Jameis has IMPROVED every year. But in this town u have writers that are over the top and many fans that hated him from day one. They r CLUELESS!

  16. JimmyT Says:

And also if Murray makes a 48 yard FG at home against the Falcons on Monday Night football we probably win that game too, because of Jameis. These are facts. I often wonder how u haters &Tom Jones would have reacted had Ben Rothlesberger been our QB & what would have been said when he was suspended for 3 games for being creepy w women. One thing for sure there would be 70% LESS HATERS. Wonder why?? If I was Jameis I would BEG to get out of this TOWN. The HATRED u all have shown since Jameis was drafted is Pathetic. Jameis doesn’t give his time in this community for show. He genuinely cares about the kids in his camps. This was a BAD TEAM, really bad and Jameis had this team at 6-6 his rookie year before Quan was suspended the last 4 games AND they went 9-7 in year 2 w No run game again but opportunistic D. Jameis IS A FRANCHISE QB!!!

  17. D1 Says:

    Jimmy T,

Do you agree that the team should have not picked JW?
If not, you’ve laid out a very compelling case that in hindsight the team should have gone another direction.
I just know if you intended to do that.

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

I could care less who gets the reps. Jameis has always been a slow season starter anyways. We need Fitz to be at his best for these 1st 3 games. I do know this though…If Mr. Winston does not improve vastly these next 2 yrs? He’s gonna end up being an NFL career Backup.

  19. Terry Says:

You know that Jameis not going to be on the sideline or in any stadium for the three weeks he is suspended. Yes I’m sure he can watch it on TV, but it will not be the same as being on the sideline knowing the play call and the actual result of the play. This will not be like when he watched Fitzpatrick from the bench last year when he was injured. This suspension is going to be the defining moment for him. Hope he recovers and can step in and make plays week 4 or 5.

    Here’s Hoping for the Best.

  20. Godeep66 Says:

Fitz will go 2&1. JW will come in and we may win one remaining game. He will then be traded if anyone wants him. He needs a change of scenery in order to succeed. He will get heckled by 50% of his own fans and 50% of his team have zero respect for him. The Glazers and coaching staff also despise him for lying to them after the incident. All of these conditions go away when he is traded.

  21. Jimmyt Says:

D1, I don’t know what I wrote that would make u think that he should NOT have been the #1 pick of the Bucs. Everyone is ready to throw this guy out and it’s simply wrong! He gets blamed everytime the Bucs lose and I was simply pointing out that Jameis has led this team & done everything he could to help this team win. Sure sometimes he tried to extend plays too much instead of taking a sack but even last year when hurt he put this team in position to win. This organization made decisions in the draft to not draft lineman or they signed FA’s that didn’t work out. I only said that with this outrageous HATE that he might want out. I sure hope not because if he leaves this team will not win for many years. Since day one on this site there are many people that just Hate him and it’s a shame.

  22. Jimmy T Says:

    Godeep66,
Seriously? To even think that FITZ should be the starter or that Jameis will go 1-12 is beyond outrageous. U can’t be serious. That’s my point this is 100% about Hate. I mean what is going on here? I am not going to debate this 3 game suspension. My goodness what crazy logic. I don’t think Dallas fans want Ezicheal Elliot to “move on”. Yeah let’s do something crazy and give up 2 number ones for Nick Foles. That makes sense. The Eagles had a dominating D, a solid running game, strong in the trenches. Foles would have done NOTHING if he was a BUC last year. Get a grip! GEEZ!

  23. I Bleed Pewter Says:

Webster’s definition of the word “hate” as a verb.

feel intense or passionate dislike for (someone). “the boys hate each other”

synonyms: loathe · detest · dislike greatly · abhor · abominate · despise · execrate · feel aversion toward · feel revulsion toward · feel hostile toward · be repelled by · be revolted by · regard with disgust · not be able to bear/stand · be unable to stomach · find intolerable · shudder at · recoil from · shrink from · hate someone’s guts · disrelish

  24. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

Nole4JabooANDdBucs come on man, I’m a Die hard Gator fan and I support Jameis, I may not agree with some of his judgement but I’m not perfect either aaaaand because I’m a Bucs fan too. Hope he doesn’t get into any more situations, plays hard, and keeps his emotions in check.
