“Instead Of Leaning On Coaches”

September 24th, 2015

LavonteDavidRemember that players-only film and practice session Gerald McCoy and Lavonte David held before last Sunday’s game?

David talked a little more about it and its aftermath.

On his weekly show on the Buccaneers Radio Network, David said the defensive meeting, which focused on communication and positioning, will become a regular occurrence.

David asked what was different between Weeks 1 and 2.

“I think from last week to this week, I think as players, first, we didn’t prepare ourselves the way that we should have prepared ourselves, instead of leaning on coaches and things like that,” David said of the difference between the Titans and Saints games. “We should have took it amongst ourselves to prepare our own self.

“I think I probably was a major part in how we came out, and how we prepared for New Orleans Saints. Coming out flat [against the Titans], came out flat, there’s wasn’t enough energy.”

David explained that he sought real feedback on the players-only session, and based on the reaction, it will continue.

“‘After the last meeting we did, I walked around and asked some of the guys, ‘That meeting, was it helpful?’ Everybody said, ‘Yes, without a doubt.’ So that’s something that we’ll continue to lean on,” David said.

Joe knows Bucs fans from New Port Richey to Sarasota are wondering what made such a big difference for the Bucs — and what team will show up Sunday in Houston. It was a different Bucs team on the field in Week 2.

David highlighted three changes in the defense, versus what he saw on opening day. “More fire to it.” … “Understanding our opponent.” … “Having that want-to,” David said.

its admirable they are meeting but the disturbing part is they have to do it themselves because the coaching staff is so incompetent. you can’t win consistently if the players can’t depend on the coaches to communicate.

  2. Waterboy Says:

I think player only meetings/film review sessions with the entire unit also adds another level of accountability amongst peers. Accountability is what has been missing from this unit for a very long time.

  3. drdneast Says:

Good ole tmaxcon, you can always depend on him to gind something negative to say and it’s not even 10 am.
    What a troll.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think we need a couple of “coaches only” meetings also….

  5. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Incompetent according to who,you and the Animosity Amigos? What makes y’all experts when it comes to coaching? What, coached a few a little league teams and now you know the ins and outs of NFL? Please. If the story hadn’t broken you decepticons would be saying these players need to be doing more film study on they’re own. Chit is laughable.

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Who said you gotta be smart to play da “fooseball”???

  7. celly Says:

I liken this to being in college. (Granted, i didn’t finish, but that’s neither here nor there)

The Professor can give you all the information and make himself available if you need help. They can motivate you all week…

..But at the end of the day, it’s up to the students to take the information and do what they will with it. The smart thing would be to get together with some other students and go over the material again…getting some other eyes to look at it and hear what they think about the information that was given.

When it’s all said and done, the Coaches are just the “teachers” and the players are the “students”.

  8. rjhurst813 Says:

In the Deon Sanders doc the NFL did a while back, Michael Irvin spoke to how Deon prepared and scouted other WR’s. Irvin could not believe how much prep and film study Prime did. Successful players can’t expect to get everything from the coaches. They have to devote their own time and resources in order to get better.

    Nole

I don’t need to say it. Lovies 3 – 15 record says incompetence LOUD enough… in addition, your boy has not one a playoff game in nearly 9 years

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

The meetings were not out of the norm. They happen every week. I think it was just the things said that mattered.

Showing a bit of ignorance there, fella. The players get together like that every week, every season. It is unwritten policy so that the team captains can do their jobs. A private time alotted for the players. The only difference was how the Captains and players approached it this time.

Tell me…did you say the same thing when Lynch, Sapp and Brooks did the EXACT same thing years ago? Did that mean Dungy was incompetent?

Inquiring minds would like to know tmaxx. I’m waitin on it☺.

  13. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

And don’t worry your soul with that playoff record thing, need I remind you of his 22 different starting QBs over that span. But what’ll you know he has a promising young gun at QB now. Let’s revisit that playoff record in a few years. I’ll be right here, and plan to remind you at that time. Just wait on it😉.

    @Celly

That was spot on! A great analogy. Teachers can be poor or great but it’s a moot point if the students don’t do their share of the work.

  15. John McKillop Says:

@BuccaneerBonzai I was going to say the exact same thing to tmaxcon, Brooks and Sapp actually held players accountable right on the field after watching replays on the video boards. This is some thing that goes on all the time, doesn’t have anything to do with incompetent coaching. Coaches put players in position, the players have to make plays.

  16. OneLove Says:

    @tmaxcon

It’s about damn time that these PLAYERS took some responsibility for THEIR INCOMPETENCE!! I mean is this what we expect now as BUCS FANS!? We want our coaches to do all the film study for our players!?!? NO!!! The players SHOULD BE PREPARING THEMSELVES and I’m glad that they are finally PUTTING IN THE EXTRA WORK to BE SUCCESSFUL!!!

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “I’m a head football coach in the NFL and your just a B!tch posting in a forum(ie YOUR OPINION DON’T MEAN SH!T!!)” aka “I’ll PISS ON ALL YOUR BILLBOARDS!”

    🙂

  17. 813bucboi Says:

@celly@rjhurst813…totally agree…my grandma would say..you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink…streak streak streak…that’s what we need…GO BUCS!!!

  18. crazy Says:

If that’s what got them to play better team defense, stick to their gaps/responsibilities and hustle to the ball then keep it up.

  19. bucsbedabest Says:

There is nothing wrong with the Buccaneers coaching staff. What would people be saying if the team had won the first game and was 2-0? What will everyone say when we go into the bye week 4-1? Lovie showed leadership and confidence last Sunday and he looked like a coach who expected the result and knows he has a talented team. Koetter is running the offense well and is bringing Winston along with the right game plan. Cullen has the DL on fire. What more could you ask for?

  20. The original "Kevin" Says:

I love that yhe players are taking responsibility and making each other accountable. There is nothinh wrong with it…its a huge positive.

I also noticed last week that they ran a good bit of single high saftey rather than just tampa two every….single….friekin……snap. I guarantee that had a lot to do with throwing brees off his game. Didnt expect to see that. A little change and in game afjustment was nice to see for once. Maybe the players spoke up and gave the coaching staff theyre two cents. I dont give a crap who is kore responsible for the better play as long as it stays that way and gets better we will all be happy campers!!!

  21. Jason McLaurin Says:

I understand what hes saying. They didn’t even know who would be starting where a week ago but they are finding roles now and are taking their preparation to the next level and going with these player meetings looking at the film to see where they need and having their own accountability for themselves which is the mental in playing in any zone based defense

  22. blind melon Says:

    Great analogy celly.

One would assume that a professional NFL player would be focused on their specific matchups and put in the extra study to do their job and contribute to the overall team effort.

If they’re not, we have a fail.
