Jameis Didn’t Get Trademark LeBeau

The steady diet of exotic Titans blitzes many expected from cagey, blitz-happy defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau never materialized.

America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston was caught a bit surprised.

Tennessee dabbled in vanilla and came up with strawberry sundaes, served in the form of two interceptions hand-scooped by Jameis himself.

“That first drive killed us but you know, the thing is we’re going to bounce back. It’s one game and something to learn from,” Jameis said. “They didn’t pressure us like we expected them to pressure us – they played a lot of zone, a lot of two-high [safeties] – but we’re going to bounce back, that’s the main thing.”

Yes, Joe watched the game and knows football. The Titans blitzed their share of times, for sure, but it was nothing like what was expected.

LeBeau clearly thought he had the horses to keep Jameis uncomfortable without gambling on forcing pressure. LeBeau was correct.

The downside of Jameis not getting hammered by blitzes Sunday is he won’t be as battle tested for the blitz onslaught from crazy Rob Ryan and the Saints in Week 2 — in the raucous SuperDome, where a liquored-up, loud, opening-day crowd will make it tough on a QB.

We’re probably going to get killed, but I think we will be more competitive. That’s kind of what the Bucs do – get blown out to where you want to pull your hair out, then play a decent enough game to give you just a tiny bit of hope. If we resemble anything like what we did yesterday, I don’t know how Lovie is going to keep the locker room, or his job.

If you asked me what would I do if I were running the Bucs to fix this problem, I really don’t know where I would start. Obviously most would want me to fire Lovie, and while I’m not totally against that, it’s pretty embarrassing league-wide to fire a veteran coach 1 game into his second season. You can say gut the roster, but then replace them with who? Many might say it can’t get worse, but that’s what I said with Raheem. Then I said it with Schiano. Now I’m saying it yesterday with Lovie. So yes, it can get worse, and it usually does. The only thing I could think of doing would be mailing Gruden a blank check. I would let him keep his MNF gig if he wanted. I would let him do whatever the hell he wanted. I would write him the most well thought out apology note ever written, and I would literally bow down to him and beg him to release us from this misery.

  2. Ray Rice Says:

Mariota only passed 16 times. But it’s what he did in those limited amount of passes that has me concerned. Imagine what Brees is going to do. This guy airs out the ball like no other. Sean is licking his chops right now.

  3. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Ray Rice,

I agree, but you watch, we’ll be competitive. It’s just how it works. At least with Brees maybe our LB’s won’t get sucked so far in as they did yesterday. Or maybe Brees will just have an off day, or Jameis will be on. Something will happen to keep the game moderately close so that we will have a glimmer of hope. Then right as we feel this team has started to turn the corner, Jacksonville will score 63 on us in RJS, by the third quarter.

  4. DallasBuc Says:

I doubt the Glazers would fire Lovie before season ends even if he doesn’t win a single game all season. There aren’t any available candidates to replace him until after the season is over unless you promote someone like Koetter on interim basis.
Hate to say it but I am almost hoping for 15 more embarrassing blowouts in order to ensure we no longer have to watch this lovable rube haunt our sidelines after 2015.

  5. Chanepic Says:

Hawaiian – I wish I had even a smidge of optimism. The Saints defense is crappy too but we kill ourselves with penalties so much we allow teams to stick around no matter who we play. As a Pro-Jameis guy, I’m afraid of his footwork so much I think Roby Ryan’s boys will look like the 85 bears. We MAY win 2 games this season but it won’t start Sunday I’m afraid.

  6. buc15 Says:

hawaiian I am with you. Gruden would know what to do with all of our talent. I am all for starting a bring Gruden back petition. Lovie has no fire or passion for the game

  7. Ray Rice Says:

    @HAWAIIAN

Oh man I just can’t see Brees having 2 off games back to back. Hope you’re right about the team being competitive though. I honestly think Jameis will be better Sunday. It may sound pathetic to say because his performance probably couldn’t get any worse, but I think he will show promise.

  8. BucFanForever Says:

Can the NFL just let the Bucs have 12 players on either side of the ball yet? All the talk about level playing fields. The Bucs just aren’t competitive with 11.

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie won’t get fired anytime soon and Gruden won’t be hired ever. What we see is what we got. Lovie’s thing is don’t ever let them see you sweat.

  10. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Gruden is my choice to replace this crap….but if licht is still here tooo then the next coach will be josh mcdaniels

  11. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie won’t be fired anytime soon and Gruden won’t be hired here ever. Lovie’s thing is to never let them see you sweat.

  12. lurker Says:

lovie couldn’t beat the .500 teams or above .500 teams as the chicago bears coach. now he cannot beat anybody. i was concerned when i found the article detailing lovie’s wins with the bears. most poo-pooed it and said he is a great coach and went to the superbowl.

ps i still believe in jameis christ and this franchise

  13. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie won’t be fired anytime soon and Gruden won’t be hired ever. Lovie’s thing is to don’t ever let them see him sweat.

  14. Joehelldeloxley Says:

@Ray Rice He could a lot worse, he only threw 2 INT yesterday.

  15. OneLove Says:

I have an idea! Let’s keep rotating coaches like the Oakland Raiders!!! Look at how successful they have been!!!

    Idiots……

  17. Jo_mama Says:

One more game if Famous Amos sucks again sit him like the rookie he is and play Mike Glennon.

Aaron Rodgers sat out several years and he has already won a super bowl

  18. Bucs53 Says:

we’re gonna get beat handedly again. And I fully expect Jameis to struggle, but I think we’ll be more competitive. I think we all saw Sunday exactly what kind of process this is going to be….a long slow one.

  19. OneLove Says:

The only difference I see between this weekend and last weekend is….. Brees will come out of the game in the 3rd quarter instead of the 4th!! He is going to DESTROY THESE OVERRATED POS SCRUBS that we call a DEFENSE AND IT WONT MATTER WHAT SCHEME we play!!! These guys can’t play zone, man to man, or put YOUR WANG in DallasBuc’s Mouth!!! Ok you got me, I lied about the last one…..

  21. Kevin Says:

Why not promote Koetter? It’s not like it could possibly be any worse.

Love said “There are a lot of disappointed teams out there. 16 other teams that are o-1 just like us.

Yeah Lovie….but none of them just got they’re ASS WHOOPED by a team that was just as bad last season. I had hopes for you but if that is ALL you can squeeze out of the talent on this roster after preparing for 4 months….you’d be out the door. Trust me I know this team needs some consistency and continuity but wow….that was yet ANOTHER embarrassing day.

Than again…what does it matter changing coaches, it’s just going to continue to trickle down from the top. Show up….get involved….act like you care about the team. Glad they have been spending money but c’mon. Show your faces at every game. Let the players all know you are behind them. Quit milking the NFL and being irrelevant. Maybe THEN things would start to change. Until then I don’t believe we will see anything other than the same.

  22. Bucs53 Says:

    Kevin:

You don’t know that Koetter would be better, there’s nothing that we saw on Sunday that looked like Koetter would succeed in that position. He didn’t put Jameis in positions to succeed, or make in-game shifts that helped the situation. That also leaves the defense solely in the hands of Frazier—do you think that’s a good idea??? Nope.

We’re going to have to stick this one out, and it most likely won’t be pretty.

  23. Tom Edrington Says:

Lovie has been promising to “bounce back” after every loss…..keep it up and Lovie may get bounced….

  24. chickster Says:

answer me this jamis is so nervous he cant seem to keep his feet this dude is not ready for this he playing reckless and unsure hes not the player everyone thought more trouble coming folks I feel like im back in 1976

  25. LargoBuc Says:

Realisticaly, if we go, say, 3-13 and there has been no tangible progress, we have to make another change.
First, if we’re eight games in and 1-7, you better start looking for a GM. Maybe promote someone from within but you want to get that GM ready, maybe even firing Licht before Lovie mid season.
Then, after you introduce the new GM, let him decide what kind if team he wants to build because frankly, the Glazers are clueless. They brought Livie in for his reume, but mostly to fill the Bucs fans with nostalgia of the Dungy years. That is no way to build, even if it did get many fans, myself included, to buy in. Did the Glazers go in depth into why those Chicago teams in the mid 2000’s were successful or did they just see Lovies name attached and say “what the hell!”.
And its not that the Tampa Two dosent work. If you look it up, you see that most plays that we git beat on, we were not in Tampa or even cover two. But Lovie had a year to get his growing pains out of the way. I understand that. But then here we are, year two on opening day, you got months to prepare and damnt we’re back where we were when we got slaughtered by the Ravens!
Also, I was wrong about Mariota. And it sucks. He can command a huddle, execute under center. Sure he wont have it that easy every week but mean while, we got Jameis out there who trips over his feet every other snap! The whole thing is just a disaster and I know its only week one but come on. If we couldnt execute, if Lovie couldnt gameplan against a rookie. If Verner cant cover Kendall freakin White, how the hell can anyone see it getting better! We dont face another team with that little talent all year, so I have lost all confidence in the direction and the progress of this regime! And it’s simple as THAT!

  26. tdtb2015 Says:

I vote to promote Koetter and Hardy Nickerson for HC/OC and DC.

Maybe Hardy will make them have an attitude on defense.

  27. LargoBuc Says:

    Yea right.

  28. LargoBuc Says:

    Nit buying it.

  29. DWE Says:

Fire the idiot Lovie and cut your loses and move on like Bilacheat says

  30. tdtb2015 Says:

    HMMMM….

Americas Quarterback throwing like a high school QB. Those interceptions say, “I need 3 years to develop!” I’m not joking. Is he color blind? Did he not notice the other team’s players? There was absolutely zero pressure on those interception throws!!!!

    Baffled

  31. Buccfan37 Says:

Listening to Lovie talk is so depressing.

  32. tdtb2015 Says:

Isn’t the NFL the copy cat league?

Maybe we will keep getting the same opposing defense until AMERICA’S HIGH SCHOOL QB gets it right!?!?!??!

We will see how well prepare Jimmy will be.

I LOST TRUST IN Lovie and Jimmy!

  33. This Guy Right Here Says:

    KOETTER for HC!!!

Give Leslie Frazier back the D!

..and oh yeah, #FIRELOVIE RIGHT FCKIN NOW!!!!

  34. The Dom Must Go Says:

No Urlacher No Briggs No wins for Lovie….. Players win games and there just aren’t any playmakers on this team. No one that can make a game changing play. Best 2 players in Chicago were on the roster before Lovie… Just like the best 2 players on Bucs defense were on the roster before Dungy/Lovie. Sapp and Brooks made the Tampa 2 not Lovie or any of those coaches. Can’t bring back the coach without the HOF play makers and expect the same results.

  35. This Guy Right Here Says:

“Listening to Lovie talk is so depressing.”

I literally nodded off… Imagine those players who have to listen to him for hours in those film rooms.

    KOETTER FOR INTERIM HC!!!

  36. The Dom Must Go Says:

We have a few good players NO great players…. Horrible drafting the past 5-6 years

  37. GhostofSchiano Says:

If we are winless by the bye…..give Glennon a try.

  45. Mitch Says:

The reason we didnt see trademark Lebeau is Because tampa was down three scores early and he didn’t want to scar Jameis for life. Thank you for your kindness, sir.

  46. This Guy Right Here Says:

Jameis didnt get ‘Lebeaued’ yesterday… The fans are the ones who got LeBeaued.

Koetter for Interim HC! RIGHT NOW!!!

  47. tdtb2015 Says:

@Buc1987 – I’m very aware of that. Maybe you should replay your DVR and pay attention of Jimmy’s decision making on those plays. He had made a second poor decision after throwing a pick 6. Maybe he is still thinking he is a Seminole and is able to create a famous comeback for us. I would be calm and collective as you are if those ints were throws in double coverage.

Welcome to the NFL Jimmy. Jimmy most learn what NFL stands for…

    …Not For Long!

  48. Bucco brice Says:

    FIRE LOVIE…”simple as that”….

  49. JJV Says:

Exile Lovie as far away from here as possible. Let’s start a fan fundraiser to build him a basement in Siberia.

  50. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @J

@ DallasBuc if we go 0-16 We better trade JaBoob to the skins for some draft picks to lure any coach to Tampa.

You may be joking but the Chargers traded Drew Brees..the Falcons traded Brett Favre…and if and when we fire Lovie the next coach will have no allegiance to #3. They did not pick him. That possibly includes Koetter who reportedly told MM that he was going to love Tampa. Nobody really knows if Koetter was truly on board with this pick. Nobody truly knows how much this pick was made to sell tickets. And #3 did pack the stands…for ONE game.

Any more games like yesterday and that’s totally out the window even if Lovie somehow magically repairs his defense. The footwork…the slippery hands that can’t hang on to the ball..two handoffs…fundamentals were horrible…#3 needs a ton of work. Then again Brett Favre didn’t play for the Falcons and didn’t start at first for the Pack. Some players develop more quickly than others.

One of the constant memes we heard during the draft debate was that MM was a project (spread offense, no snaps from center,no huddle) while #3 was more NFL ready. I don’t think I’ll ever again believe what I read no matter how much credibility the source may have.

Yeah it’s only one game and the Bucs MAY have made MM look a lot better than he is…but he clearly had NO difficulty taking snaps from center or huddling his team. And he clearly looked more polished than #3. No stumbling over his own feet, no losing balls that weren’t batted out of his hand….

  51. BrianBucs Says:

    Joseph, Joeseph, Joseph

Still with that silly, laughable “America’s Quarterback” crap? Really?
After what we all saw yesterday it’s more like “America’s Clumsy, Awkward Disappointment”

If you want to be more accurate:

    “America’s Quarterback” – Marcus Mariota

  52. Bucco brice Says:

    AMERICAS MISTAKE…”simple as that”….

  53. StPeteBucsFan Says:

OMG…are any of you watching MNF. Dallas, Tmax and Realist will be going crazy. Quinn has his defenders attacking the Eagle and it’s working. No passive zone bs. Chucky is going nucking futs…”Quinn has turned the worst defense in the league into a real attacking force.”

BTW…Remember when I talked about the Seahawks also worried about their OL.
Russell Wilson…who is no Jameis stumble bum slew foot was sacked six times.

#3 was sacked only four and some of those were because he also had two fumbles that he was able to recover. He should have had at least two more ints.
IE…he actually played far worse than the score and stats indicated. I know hard to believe eh.

  54. DallasBuc Says:

Incompetent Lovie Smith is clearly the problem, not Winston. The sooner we move on from this Lovie Smith is a good HC fantasy the sooner we will have team we can be proud of again.

  55. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

This Winston bashing is really ridiculous. Dick Lebeau was 26-3 against rookie quarterbacks coming in. He simply kicked Winston’s ass, while Wisenhunt destroyed Lovie. The difference? It was Jaboo’s first game…ever.

  56. Destinjohnny Says:

The body language was interesting at the game between the squads.
marcus was so confident you could see it a mile away.
His team was feeding off it. He was freezing our backers with his play action.
His mind was as quick as his release. Then the accuracy was off the charts.
Winston was as slow as a govt mule. He was staring down his recievers worse then josh 5. His delivery was really giving the secondary of the titans all day to zero in. I know it’s Winston’s first game but it’s going to take him 3 years to be average. He had the best line in NCAA at fsu he also had so much talent around him that coverered his ass and made him look better than he was. On another note lovies practices are the most lackadaisical I have ever seen and it showed Sunday.

  57. BrianBucs Says:

    @ DallasBuc

Jameis wasn’t the reason Buc’s lost yesterday, but he was a HUGE part of it

  58. BrianBucs Says:

    @ Destinjohnny

Winston also played in the very weak ACC. Yesterday the game just looked way too fast for him

  59. DallasBuc Says:

Brian- were some of Winston’s decisions poor? Yes, but he is a rookie in his very first game. The HUGE part of why we were destroyed yesterday was this completely unprepared to compete football team that Incompetent Lovie Smith fielded and a defense that watched their rookie QB throw 7 yard passes to wideass open receivers in the middle of that defense, not to mention allowing this Sankey guy to truck through the teeth of Lovie’s defense making him look like second coming of Thurman Thomas.
    Unacceptable

    “@ Destinjohnny

Winston also played in the very weak ACC. Yesterday the game just looked way too fast for him”

He also played many teams outside of the ACC as well. Plus the ACC DOES in fact send many players to the NFL year in and year out. He’ll be fine, that’s why he’s out there. He’ll learn and adjust to the speed of the game. Winston is the least of this teams problems right now.

  64. Elle Says:

I believe Winston to be smart enough and confident enough to learn from what happened on the field against the Titans. It’s a shame that he doesn’t have competent coaches to help him out on this process. You’re on your own, kid. Gotta learn and grow by yourself, rely on your own resources. Until the almighty Glazers will decide to finally step aside and let someone else think about all the football decisions. Then maybe at that point we’ll see a competent coaching staff turning this franchise around.

And yes, Mariota fans, I’d say the same for your beloved ex Ducks. Even him would be on his own, because the coaching situation in Tampa is what it is.

  65. Lakeland Buc Says:

I’m glad Jameis didn’t have an outstanding game yesterday, if he did you all would be expecting it every week. In my opinion he did ok, and his play will get better. NFL fans are the worst fans in the world, they flip-flop and will turn on you before your head spin. It’s best not to give them any hope at all, the bar has been set for Mariota. They will expect this from him every week, just ask RG3. Early success is not always a good thing for a young QB, progress is the best thing going for a young QB.

  66. IdahoBucsfan Says:

    Fire Lovie ASAP!

  67. Destinjohnny Says:

The acc has 3 -4 good teams like every other conference. . But it did put the 2nd most pros in the nfl last year so that was impressive. The year winstoN beat auburn they were the 4th best team in the conference. They pulled so many games out of their ass that year. Lsu crushed them Uga dominated the whole game and against the tide it was pure luck they got back in that game.

Guys give it up mariota was the pick and we blew it. Finally for the first time in the history of the bucs we have a franchise at a superstar qb and we draft the wrong guy. It’s really heartbreaking

  68. Sumo Says:

Please quit calling the kid “Americas Quarterback”. It is embarrassing to him and our intelligence. Give him that name when he wins a playoff game.

  69. BrianBucs Says:

    1987

The ACC is a basketball conference where football is secondary except at FSU, which is why FSU is in that conference to start with. And even though the ACC does send a small number of players to the NFL very few now are QB’s now, unlike the past.
Hopefully Jameis will get use to the speed of the game and be able to adjust to it as yesterday he looked confused, very slow, awkward, clumsy and unathletic.
However, there are more major problems, like Lovie and his defense

  70. jimmy53 Says:

    Brianbuc:

Yeah, you’re just flat out wrong. The ACC has put a record 11 teams in bowl games the last two years. Two years ago the ACC won the NC and won nearly EVERY single individual player award. They have numerous players drafted every year, and they did pretty well in OOC games last year–or did you miss the Clemson and Ga Tech bowl games…

    Nice try.

  71. Onetrickpony Says:

America’s Q.B. Pro Ready. Can walk on water to come from behind in a game. Probably one day I just wonder if I will, live long enough to see it. And why can’t we get a quality coach that knows how to build a team and win. This one sure don’t and if he does he hasn’t shown me yet. The Bucks are slowly turning back into the yucs, paper sack time is coming ,one day
