Jameis Watch: “Diva Distraction Index”

February 25th, 2015

jameis 1026Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

Is Team Glazer reading Forbes?

If so, Team Glazer might not like the well-crafted Jameis Winston piece this week by Brian Goff, who tries to pin down the risk of drafting Jameis Winston.

Goff says Winston falls into the “diva-distraction” category and represents a massive gamble.

Here’s an excerpt:

Great NFL quarterbacks send the opposite signal. Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Wilson, Brees, and former great and near-great QBs share an almost maniacal level of commitment, not merely to looking good, but to winning and putting in the time and effort to maximize their chances. These guys are like assistant coaches in uniform who don’t register on the DD (Diva-Distraction) Index. A few notable wide receivers or cornerbacks may have a high DD Index, but not great NFL quarterbacks. Looking down the list of all-time NFL QB by passer rating (with comparisons by eras) only a few such as Joe Namath would even show up on the DD Index.

Winston possesses tantalizing physical skills. On the NFL Network, Steve Mariucci touted Winston’s “football IQ.” Yet, he sends signals of a high DD Index based on different publicized incidents, Winston has appeared 20 years old going on 12. Furthermore, Like Vince Young or Johnny Manziel, he’s experienced tremendous success and been treated like a king at his home institution. He’s a celebrity already. That combination screams “don’t draft me.” Players with seemingly much more maturity than Winston, such as Washington’s Robert Griffin III, have found the transition to the pro game and dealing with failure for the first time in their athletic careers very challenging.

Will Lovie Smith see a “diva” when he administers “the eye” test? What will Team Glazer think when it gets to know Winston during his visit to One Buc Palace?

The risk Joe is certain of comes from not drafting a quarterback. That would be a great way to not get to the playoffs, and leave fans longing for Derek Anderson, the fourth-best QB in the NFC South.

  1. flmike Says:

It’s called narcissism, and he appears to have it in spades…you saw it in the interview on NFL Network with Charles Davis, where he threw his agents under the bus, on the sidelines of the Rose Bowl when he was arguing with Fisher, it appeared when he dressed out for a game he was suspended from, it’s what drives him…give him a season in the NFL and his locker-room nickname will be “Blameless”

  2. bucco brice Says:

yeah, a diva…another red flag….more red flags to this guy than the ones that fly over rayjay on gameday…MARIOTA can do everything he’s done and doesn’t have the character issues to worry about….

  3. pick6 Says:

if your team isn’t winning you’re a diva. if your team is winning, you’re charismatic.

  4. Whocares92 Says:

Would you consider Brett Favre a diva?

  5. bucco brice Says:

@flmike …agreed, how’s he going to handle losing too?

  6. Whocares92 Says:

Or Aaron Rogers for that matter. People call him Sharron Rogers

  7. the Cannon Says:

I can see where this could raise concern, except for the fact that Winston puts in the work and he backs up what he says on the field. 2 years 1 loss. Through all of his shit, he still is ranked the number 1 pick for a reason.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I have stated many times that this (the desire to be loved/adored) is perhaps the cause of Winston’s off-field incidents.

Yes…I am quite certain the Glazers read Forbes…and I do believe they care about the “Diva” issue.

It’s a double edged sword….this part of Winston’s personality makes him very attractive to his fans….perhaps unattractive to most others.

Winston has been compared to many Pro QBs….with his skills….Brees, Manning, Brady, Luck…..

The only QB recently that has some of these Diva characteristics is Cam Newton….and he has toned it down somewhat.

  9. pick6 Says:

i think it’s irresponsible the way reporters and analysts lump draft busts together. different players fail for widely different reasons – skill sets, how much the game matters to them, injuries, bad coaching, etc – and to just lump them together like they all had the same past and the same red flags doesn’t help anybody have an intelligent discussion.

  10. tmaxcon Says:

All superstars (music, film, tv and sports) are diva’s to a certain extent. society in general makes it that way. From the time stars receive national recognition they are already somewhat elitists. This article could be said for a lot of players in this league that excel and very successful. Nit picking every little personality trait or mistake is getting comical. It’s not a perfect world. People are not perfect. As a team and society you must learn to manage multiple personalities including those with defects. It’s just a fact. All these holier than thou, self righteous arses pounding on Winston ever chance they get need to take a long look inside. Winston needs to grow up no doubt and I hope and think we will be lucky enough to watch him mature and win a lot of football games in tampa.

This is PRO not college. If he came unglued like that, just think what he would do if he had last years line. Plus the defense giving up points the way they were. My bet is he would go out of his mind by 0-3.

  16. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Let’s hope that the Glazers put more stock in what Jameis was actually doing yesterday and what one of the most well respected baseball coaches in the country had to say about it than they do the opinion of some random Forbes writer who has never met Jameis:

    https://floridastate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1740436

Former Florida State quarterback and closer Jameis Winston stopped by Dick Howser Stadium during pregame batting practice and spent much of the game in the dugout with his former teammates.

“It was really neat that he came by during BP and spent three hours with his friends,” Martin said. “You’d think a guy of — let’s face it — his stature, where he is in his career, to come back and spend time with his buddies that he’s been around for two years, really, to me, shows you the humbleness that Jameis Winston possesses. Sure, he’s got a little confidence. Dadgum, I’d have a little confidence if I could throw the dadgum ball on a dime 40 yards away. I can’t throw the dadgum baseball on a dime from 20 yards. And he’s just that kind of guy. It was neat.

“It really was neat, because we don’t play again until the weekend and he’s probably got other things that he’s going to be doing in the next few days. It was nice to talk to him and he told me how much he enjoyed San Diego and working with George Whitfield. The guy is a joy. That’s their teammate. That’s something I can’t say I expect from every single Seminole, but it sure was nice that a guy who played baseball for three months during the year would come back over here and spend three hours with his ex-teammates.

Also, anyone criticizing Jameis & Jimbo going at it on the sideline during the Oregon game is only exposing themselves as someone who has only watched one FSU game involving Jameis or Jimbo their entire lives and everything they say about the kid should be instantly discredited. They went at it all the time after nearly every drive of Jameis career as a starter, just like Jimbo went at it with Ponder and Manuel. This is nothing new.

  17. Buccfan37 Says:

Will the Bucs go out on a limb and take the chance that Winston’s upside dwarfs any potential negativity that could pop up to make his choice unwise to the team moving forward? Only time will tell how this risky pick pans out. The drama will be intense, nothing winning can’t temper. Winning will cure all doubt.

  18. Pickgrin Says:

Wouldn’t it be nice for a change to just have enough talent at QB that your QB could even be talked about as a potential Diva?

  19. scott Says:

does the name Randall Cunningham ring a bell. These people need to get real

  20. bucs4lyfe Says:

apparently winning and confidence is frowned upon in tampa….bucs fan that don’t want Winston say why pick a winning quarterback if he is too boastful, why pick a quarterback who talks about winning the superbowl before being drafted…..if it wasn’t for the off field issues at fl state people are crying about his attitude wouldn’t even be an issue and who should be a number pick wouldn’t be debated. no one boasts unless they have a reason to and he clearly see’s his own upside and skillset, marriotta is smart not to be confident because he’s not even sure how good he will be at the next level.

personally if you plan on being basically an nfl team CEO and the leader of men as a 21 year old kid you better have some kind of confidence and swagger about you so your teammates don’t look at you like your johnny manziel. all the trash johnny football talked and couldn’t back it up lol it’s in winstons best interest to play up to the level his mouth projects

  21. Pickgrin Says:

    Nice quote Creamsicle

  22. flmike Says:

I’ve slowly come to accept the fact that he is probably going to be the pick, I don’t have to like it, but I’ll embrace it if it happens, I’ll also be open to having my mind changed over time, if he proves me wrong that will actually be pretty awesome, but if he doesn’t I will not be shocked, only disappointed that all the signs were there but we chose to ignore them in the name of expedience over long term stability….and it will also mean Lovie is gone.

  23. Tom Edrington Says:

All I can hear is that Robot from the old “Lost In Space” series blaring out the warning:

    all this swagger talk LOL

  25. Robert 9 Says:

    huh?

  26. P'cola Buc Says:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneer “culture” has not included that of dynamic on feild demonstrations of confidence and swagger for many years. Not on defense since the days of Sapp, Brooks and Lynch and hardly, if ever on offense. Winston has the personality to motivate the team and electricfy the fan base. His confidence is so “out there” he’ll have no choice but to give his 100% to back up his words. I say let’s pull the trigger, draft him and hope for the best.

  27. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @flmike

That’s what up flmike….gotta respect that mindset and that’s the kind of maturity Winston is showed in interviews. I absolutely want Winston because it think his skills are the best and people that don’t simply quote stats as if that tells the story. having said that if I have doubts so does the organization because I don’t think he answered questions about baseball either and even though I like his confidence I do think it’s misplaced and not realistic thinking and when you talk about going first overall there are questions about him as a person you just cant have questions about BUT I don’t question his skills even a little, he has high interceptions just like Andrew luck did before coming to the nfl….atleast he doesn’t fumble like mariotta does and his anticipation is that of an nfl ready qb.

we had to do the same thing with mike glennon, he looked so weak and sorry but he was the guy after benching freeman and if your a buc fan you simply had to deal with it. Winston you get onboard with it and make him prove your right or wrong simply because your a buc fan, not do what I want you to do because I like your team or I wont like your team anymore. most of the people here wanted manziel or some quarterback last year even though none of them was as sure a pick as this years class. get on board or go get another team because if mariotta is a Winston fans will surely do the same without crying about it

  28. Fishfries Says:

These people that write these dumb articles on Jameis are a bunch of phonies. You see, the thing with FAKE people is they don’t like genuine and positive personalities. It doesn’t sit week with them. Therefore theyll attack that person to make themselves feel better about who they are. Jameis Winston is a REAL person. Fellow players love that and flock to it. Bottom line! Just another phony article. Next!

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo is very confused…..he thought Diva was a woman in the English language….so he checked out pictures of Winston….Winston has an adams apple….Pablo checks all the “women” in Jaurez saloons for adams apples because Pablo learned his lesson after too many Tequillas one night. Pablo provides the definition of Diva below:”

    di·va
    ˈdēvə/
    noun
    a famous female opera singer.
“your average opera isn’t over till the diva trills her high notes”
a famous female singer of popular music.
    “a pop diva”
a woman regarded as temperamental or haughty.
“she’s such a diva that she won’t enter a restaurant until they change the pictures on the walls to her liking”

  37. Fuzzy Red Coin Purse Says:

The more I hear about Winston and his antics the more I get worried. If we draft him we better have an iron clad contract that has stipulations about off field antics, playing baseball, and production points to meet. I can see this kid going either way, but has potential to be great. Mariota is more in a consistent positive direction, but a lower ceiling.

  38. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Can someone explain to me why Mariota not doing a whiteboard session with Mariucci is being completely overlooked? The ability to read plays and read defenses is Mariota’s biggest question mark and he didn’t put himself out there to do it?

Let me put this another way. Jameis’ biggest issue is his character, right? So what if Jameis refused to meet with teams at the combine….wouldn’t that be a HUGE deal? So why isn’t Mariota being asked why he didn’t put himself on TV breaking down a play? Do people just not care if he can or not?

  39. HawaiianBuc Says:

The problem with guys like Manziel, RG3, Vince Young, and even Freeman is they don’t have the work ethic necessary to be a great QB. It has nothing to do with being a “distraction” or anything else, they just don’t work hard enough at their craft. It’s not about personality. If you look at all the great QB’s throughout history, they have personalities all over the place, but they all have a great work ethic. If Winston has that, then I feel really good about the pick. I’ve yet to read anything but positives about how hard he works, but that’s for the professionals to determine. As for the distraction thing, we didn’t have any distractions last year, how did that work out for us?

  40. Lev in Philly Says:

All these reg flags are not as bad as Matiota’s red flag. You know, the one where he is not a good quarterback. That is probably the biggest red flag ever.

  43. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

I agree with the forbes writer, wholeheartedly.

No matter what the Bucs are allowing the public to believe about their intentions, Mariota will be our draft pick at #1. He’s too complete of a prospect to pass on.

  45. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

The GBoy’z have been fooled my many a HC candidate…so…

  46. HawaiianBuc Says:

When choosing between Winston and Mariota, most of us agree that Winston is probably a better QB, but Mariota has higher character. Obviously there are some that disagree, but for the most part, that’s where the debate rages. Almost everyone thinks Winston is more NFL ready, and Mariota has a huge learning curve. If you were technically the worst team in the NFL, wouldn’t it make the most sense to take the best player on the field? Yes, I understand there is going to be some fear about him doing something stupid, but he also gives us the better chance to win, and win now. In my opinion, that’s just too good to pass up. Unfortunately, we don’t have the luxury of taking the safe pick. In order to be relevant, we are going to have to take some chances.

Looking at Mariota last year (the whole year, not just the championship game), his biggest struggle was throwing on third and long. These obvious passing downs brought him very little success, probably because the deception of their offense was gone. Well, what do you think is going to happen in the NFL? 3rd and 2’s are great, but not a reality in the NFL. I want the guy that can convert the 3rd and 12’s. That’s Winston. If he screws up off the field, that will suck. Everyone and their mother will come out of the woodwork and remind everyone how they hated the pick from the beginning (although many wanted the pick and have developed amnesia). But in the end, I personally would rather run that risk and get the best player than get a great guy whose skills need a tremendous amount of developing.

lol you put Winston in a category with 3 receivers and that is the position that consistently always has diva’s but at the same time if Winston performs at their level before they got old how could anyone complain.

I say GMC is a leader of the Christian bible revival going on in tampa but leader of men he is not the guy to get nasty and will us to a win. like Winston or not if he can be that guy to rally the troops and be the villain like batman but get the job done so be it. you can’t deny his skills all you can say is your scared of his off field issues……OFF FIELD ISSUES lol does anyone comprehend that especially if the other guys question marks have to do with on the field. you want it to be pretty you want it to be perfect but vinny testeverde is the guy they name when talking about the last time bucs picked a quarterback that high. that scares me more than picking mariotta and him not being ready until a year or two from now and then not being all that good, history has proven guys coming out of that offense are just as likely to fail than Winston is to have an off field issue

Fisher said that Winston’s study habits are particularly impressive.

“Every night, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, we get off the practice field, he eats his dinner at 6:45, and then he’s up here in the offices until 9:30, 10, 10:30 at night,” Fisher said. “He would sit and watch every practice tape and then prepare for red zone, third down, whatever it might be. A lot of guys are very talented but he likes to understand the game.”

  51. Luther Says:

@CreamsicleBananaHammock that’s the kind of guy/diva I want on my team.

  52. Tampabaybucfan Says:

That was not denied by Joe…..kind of brushed under the table….but if this is true….the Glazers have at least in the past shown a sensitivity to that issue with draft picks.
Not saying they will with Winston….but it can’t be totally discounted either because the #1 pick & a QB is far more center stage than any other pick.

  55. Luther Says:

Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan. Two more Divas that actually got their coaches fired. Winston reminds me of Magic the way he encourages his teammates.

  56. bucs4lyfe Says:

I think the glazers boys should sit this one out……they’ve done nothing by way of hiring gm’s or head coaches and they are nothing like their father so they are no more qualified to make this pick than lovie or licht. lovie has 4 years left on his contract so I think you honestly have to give lovie a chance to either lead this team to playoff contention on a consistent basis or make a bad pick and get himself fired. I think the big change in the bucs has been the reshuffling of scouts after Dominick was fired….if they get this pick wrong there’s nothing they can say that would save them

  57. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    @TBBF

That’s not at all what Duemig has said in the past. He’s said that it was nixed by the Glazers because the guy was too dumb. There’s no doubt in my mind that the player in question was Morris Claiborne given that he scored a 4 on his Wonderlic and that’s the draft Duemig was talking about

  58. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @bucs4lyfe

I am more comfortable with Koetter on the team this year….I think he will have considerable influence (behind the scenes) on the QB position. Surely, the QB question had to be part of the hiring process.
If I were to bet on this, I would bet that Koetter stated he could work with either Glennon or a rookie if that was the choice….and positioned himself to be a part of the decision going forward. This had to be one of the attractions the Bucs offered him.

  59. Josh P Says:

  60. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @JoshP

You do realize that what we are seeing from the Bucs now is the proverbial “trial balloon”…..it is a time-tested proven technique to run what might be controversial choices in front of the public to measure the reaction….
It’s not the same as “smokescreens” which really aren’t that necessary in this case.
But the trial balloon may have been put forward to satisfy the Glazers that the pick will be acceptable. I look for more of it between now & the draft.
It is very possible that Lovie & Licht want Winston….I’m not denying that…but it is also possible that the Glazers have placed a high bar on picking him.

  64. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

TBBF…as I’ve said before. I DO pay attention to the mocks, because they rarely get the first pick wrong. In fact I pay more attention to them than anything that Lovie Smith has to say about the subject of who they are taking.

You misunderstood – as did both Joes at 1st until Steve clarified. He didn’t mean the Glazers nixed the pick because of the way the player talked – they said don’t draft that guy because he’s too dumb – as in not smart. Its come up the last 2 times that JBF was on with Steve D.

BTW – if anyone heard that and wondered who he was talking about – I can pretty much guarantee you Steve was referring to CB Morris Claiborne who a bunch of people were projecting to the Bucs with the 5th pick in 2012. Claiborne scored a shockingly low “4” on the Wonderlic test.

I’m too lazy to do the research…..but except for perhaps the Mocks on Luck/RG3 and maybe Manning/Rivers….I can’t think of any that had the same position/team need lined up….that is why this one is unique and may be more difficult to predict.

  68. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Pickgrin

Thanks for the clarification….and I suppose I can trust you are right so I won’t have to listen again or research the matter….but one thing does remain.

The Glazers will step in on occaision if they desire.

That was exactly Steve’s point and the reason he brought it up.

  70. Lion Says:

It always interesting hearing non football people try to act like they know more than actual football people. Also, comparing a pure pocket passer in Winston, to Mr. Spread RGKNEE is pretty damn redicilous. There is an obvious reason why rgknee isn’t haven’t the success has had in college and his rookie year is uber obvious to anyone that actually knows a thing or two about football and I’m positive most people on this site know what I’m talking about.

    CremsicleBananaHammock says: ”
Can someone explain to me why Mariota not doing a whiteboard session with Mariucci is being completely overlooked? The ability to read plays and read defenses is Mariota’s biggest question mark and he didn’t put himself out there to do it?”

We don’t know if he met with Mooch or not. We don’t know if he was even invited. I haven’t found a reference to that yet.

    BUT

Chris Landry (per Tiki Barber/Brandon Tierney on CBS Sports):
Landry was present for two of Mariota’s interviews. Mariota walked into the room both times and knew the names of every coach and executive in attendance.
“You could tell he had done his homework,” Landry said. “He had questions for them, and he did a good job. One team drew up a play – one of their plays, not an Oregon play – and then proceeded with the interview. Towards the end of it, they asked him to draw up the play that was explained about eight minutes ago, and he was flawless with it. He’s very, very good. He’s going to do a great job with that.
“So listen, if you’re looking for someone that is clean, that’s got transferrable skills, that has the ability to be able to learn, he’s going to measure with high marks there.”

  72. Bill Says:

So after reading the Forbes article I have one question. Is the Diva Distraction Index real? Or is this an analytical sounding way of passing an opinion? I was naturally curious to see who else made such a list, but I can’t find it.

  73. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Here’s another quote by Jason Licht thru Peter King that should make the Winston Whackjobs a little nervous….

‘The Bucs have nine weeks to poke holes in Winston, and I expect a few minor ones to emerge. As I wrote Monday, if there are big problems with Winston, Tampa Bay won’t take him. Marcus Mariota is absolutely not out of the picture here. But Winston fits the offense more, with one slight asterisk. He threw 18 picks last year for FSU, and Licht told me Saturday: “Usually you find when a guy throws interceptions in college that doesn’t go away in the pros.” Something to watch, anyway.’

When you combine that with comments on Winston’s off-the-field concerns, it definitely doesn’t seem like Winston will our #1 draft choice.

I consider it basically impossible for him to beat out Mariota by the end of this interview and tryout process.

  74. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

    Erik…I’m not nervous at all.

  75. Yungry Says:

Honestly, I could see him doing this. Endorsing Publix or even Joe’s Crab Shack. Takes the sting out of the venom when you make light of yourself.

  77. Josh P Says:

no matter what side you’re on when it comes to which QB you want, i think most people do agree JW is more ready to go day 1. Sure i get the off field stuff push you away from wanting to draft him, i get that.

Now one angle i haven’t heard many people talk about is with the fact that L&L already have 1 bad season in the books. How much is that going to play a factor into who they pick or trade down. They draft JW and he starts day 1 and fails, at least they went down with their man. They draft MM and don’t feel he’s ready to go right away and doesn’t start and the Bucs are already in a hole by they time he starts playing if at all, L&L pretty much don’t even get to watch MM play and another 2 to 4 win season for them and they will most likely be gone. Can’t see them risking getting fired and never seeing their #1 pick play a full season. Clearly all hypothetical.. This is one reason why i think they do go with JW or trade out(if they can). And whose to say if they trade out depending on how far they move down that 1 of the 2 aren’t still available..

Its going to be fun leading up to the draft.

  78. Buctebow Says:

You know this is all a bunch of what if’s, that everyone is going crazy over. Mariota being a quiet type of guy, could turn into a serial killer next year, what if that happened? Yes a lot of bad things could potentially happen and there are warning signs pointing toward the potential being great for some to occur. That doesn’t mean they will. Don’t over think it. Keep it simple, pick the best football player and hope the rest works out. Playing it safe doesn’t always get the job done. That is what makes me fearful, that Lovie being a conservative guy will always make a conservative pick, regardless of who is the best player.

  79. Robert 9 Says:

LOL @ the Publix commercial. that was funny.

no chance of it by the way. they are the class of the field and would never let that guy represent them. maybe winn dixie or burger king, but publix…no way in hell.

  80. WS99 Says:

One more guy with confidence and swagger = Mike Evans.

So just to recap Brady, manning, brees are on field coaches and Cunningham Newton and Winston are divas. Got it, check!

Brady and manning yell at rec, refs and on the sidelines but they are labelled as leader Winston is a risk for similar actions. Check!

Manning settles out of court twice for sexual assualt but he’s a HOF class act face of franchise. Winston is a rapist even though he didn’t settle and doesnt have evidence against him. Check!

It’s a confusing fight I need to make sure I have my “facts” straight.

  81. WS99 Says:

“she was examining Manning to see why Manning was having pain in one of his feet and was crouched behind him when “entirely unprovoked, Peyton Manning decided to pull down his shorts and sit on Dr. Naughright’s head and face.”

As Naughright described it in a deposition entered into the court record: “It was the gluteus maximus, the rectum, the testicles and the area in between the testicles. And all that was on my face when I pushed him up. … To get leverage, I took my head out to push him up and off.”

  82. Stanglassman Says:

Pickgrin- I thought Claiborne too, no doubt that was who Steve D. was referring to and think God they nix that pick. I couldn’t understand how that pertained to Jameis but then again I couldn’t make much sense of anything Duemig said on the QB/draft subject. I think Ian B. summed it up best in his comments.
It’s good to see some of the guys who’s opinion I respect on here coming around to Jameis. Not so much St. Pete who I put in the Duemig wanting to have it both ways category.

  83. Daniel Says:

Hahaha, this article is a joke. Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering in a student union oh my those certainly cancel out a Heisman and a National Championship!

It has also been well documented that Winston puts in the work, watches video on every game and practice. His mechanics are as good if not better than any QB prospect in the past decade.

Sounds like it’s mostly UF or SEC fans in general showcasing their disdain for this tremendous athlete. Get over it this isn’t college it’s the pros, where every inch matters.

Nice article it really is going to boil down to mechanics.

  86. White Tiger Says:

Kid Fameis is his own worst nightmare.

This article isn’t trying to lower his esteem in the eyes of the Tampa fanbase…nobody really cares. It’s the realism of the issue.

Listening to all the FSU/Kid Fameis fanboys compare their savior to the likes of HoF/future Hof QB’s Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Larry Bird, Brett Favre…etc., etc., COMPLETELY miss the point.

NONE of these guys were divas BEFORE they were drafted.

Joe Montana – was a 3rd round draft pick – which means he was unable to be diva. “Joe Cool” was given that nickname by his teammates because of his ability to handle high pressure scenarios without showing any signs of nerves. He won his final college game and National Championship after falling behind Houston, down 34-12 in the ’79 Cotton Bowl…scoring 23 points in 7 minutes. Many of you that assert Joe Montana was diva must be doing so because they never watched him play – or possibly because of the commercials they’ve seen where his response to 4 former players talking about their Heismann Trophy’s – was to rub his chin while displaying his 4 Super Bowl rings – probably missed the fact that he dd not talk about those 4 Super Bowl victories (2 of which he was game MVP), he let his rings do the talking. No, you fanboys are absolutely wrong again.

Larry Bird hated the limelight. He was a straight shooter and he told the truth, but he never bragged. He always deferred any praise to his team/teammates. His trash/smack talk was saved for the court, where he could be vicious, but only because he knew what you were doing wrong, even if you didn’t. Not so in public.

Tom Brady – a 6th ROUND draft pick…if I have to tell you that 6th rounders are NEVER diva’s..then I’m wasting my time. As a matter of fact, if Tom Brady didn’t part his hair right on draft day he would have been an afterthought. Brady had a squeaky clean rep for quite some time – and still shifts praise to his teammates. Unlike Kid Fameis, Brady uses the words “team” and “we” a lot, he doesn’t use the word “I” much, unless he’s confessing to something that probably wasn’t his fault.

Brett Favre – a 2nd ROUND draft pick for ATLANTA – guys from the 2nd round who carry the title “diva”…don’t get drafted in the 2nd round. Brett was buried on the depth chart. Brett certainly became a diva…but it was sometime after EARNING his first Super Bowl ring…

If you think I’m being dismissive of you and your QB – you would be correct. You seem to miss the point that not only were ALL of your comparisons WRONG – you compared an unproven, mouthy, never-thrown-an-NFL-Pass…to Hall of Fame QB’s/players…

I repeat. Kid Fameis isn’t that great – and he’s definitely NOT PROVEN to even be mentioned with the CURRENT rookies, let alone NFL greats.

Yet he (and you) are steadily chirping…

You’re missing that big ol’ hand, writing on that big ol’ wall…just because you can’t even imagine that Kid Fameis won’t get selected #1..it WON’T be due to racism – so lets not start with that stuff…it’s foolish.

  87. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

You love you some you. No one cares.

  88. White Tiger Says:

    Looks like someone does.

  89. Kaptain Morgan Says:

I’ve heard this analogy before regarding the QB position and being a so-called Diva doesn’t equate to being a winner on the field. Either the article’s writer (Brian Goff) is a fan of Colin Cowherd or vice versa for this is almost verbatim what Cowherd said last year regarding why not to draft Johnny Manzel.

The thought process is that at the most important position on the field (QB) “few” Diva QBs have made it in the NFL (Joe Namath was referenced as one exception.) The Diva QB was described as a circus style distraction on and off the field who had a me-type attitude who was more interested in their own publicity than winning. The QB Diva doesn’t make winning their #1 priority over living fast and enjoying the publicity and limelight that comes with their profession. This excludes Farve, Brady, Montana, Marino, and later in his career (not earlier) Elway who made winning and their teams their priority. Diva QBs given as an example were RG3, Manzel, Mark Sanchez (GQ Magazine shoot), Vince Young, Ryan Leaf, Matt Leinart, and JaMarcus Russell.

The problem for young immature kids who are more interested in getting paid first and winning second is that the NFL flushes out this mentality and sooner rather than later they end up out of the league. Before they grow-up, mature and realize they are wasting away a great opportunity (and talent) most have used up all their chances to become legitimate difference makers or even players at all in the NFL.

  90. Mariota Joe Says:

Attention Glazers!!! We KNOW you read a lot of the posts (or have them summarized by your underlings), and CLEARLY you can see, without a doubt, that Mr. Winston is an extremely polarizing prospect, one which WILL cost you even more of your fan base. That is the bottom line.
