Billy Winn explains what he saw on the Bucs’ offensive line

The Buccaneers’ blocked field goal attempt yesterday was a heinous moment in team history.

But as painful as it might have been, you really have to give it up for the Browns lineman who executed one heck of a play.

You can watch the painful video here, as defensive lineman Billy Winn, who previously was out several weeks with a bad quad muscle, played leapfrog with Logan Mankins and Bucs long snapper Andrew DePaola.

Winn explained to Ohio.com that Mankins’ alignment opened his eyes — and a window of opportunity.

Winn knew he had a chance before the ball was snapped.

“So I’m lining up on the ball,” Winn explained, “and I take a look at [guard Logan] Mankins. I see he’s a little wide. We’re supposed to stay off the center, so I stayed off him, but I still had the gap to myself. I was like, ‘All right, here we go.’ ”

The decision

Never mind that Winn, a defensive end, had never blocked a kick before. What’s experience when you’ve got instincts? Give an athlete an opportunity to make a play and he’s going to do it.

“It’s just instinct,” Winn said. “You’ve got to look and see what’s in front of you. The gap was real wide, so I made a decision: ‘All right, I’m going to jump this now.’ It was a split-second decision.”

Of course, that first-quarter block made Joe want to puke, but again, it was a heck of a play. If a Buccaneer pulled that off, Joe would be celebrating the genius.

Regardless, Mankins failed in his responsibility, not something that should happen from a veteran All-Pro, and a guy who might get into the discussion for the Hall of Fame one day.

I was on the extra point/FG team in high school. It was 38 years ago and I still remember the rule: “Seal to the inside, toward the center.” Yikes.

Mankins has made a big play (blunder) every week. Holding, not picking up blitzers, or in this case not blocking at all. Thank god we gave up wright and a pick for mankins. HOF? Not after his tour in tampa.

Mankind stinks!! Its obviously don’t want to be here!

We suck because our attention to the small details suck and this is another example.

I also don’t understand why our QB is not able to make more adjustments at the line based on what the other teams defense is giving us. All the good teams adjust at the line.

It did’nt look like he had any difficulty jumping over Mankins. What was the former Patriot thinking? Apparently nothing.

It’s crystal clear that Mankins has had zero desire to play here since day one. Add a train wreck of a season and what little wind there was in his sails has long dissipated. As unprofessional as that may be, it’s hard to blame the guy coming from a franchise that actually takes pride in winning year after year.

    Fairly spot on.

Not saying he doesn’t want to be here or has no desire. The very little Joe has been around him, Mankins is a good dude.

Will never forget his press conference the day after the trade. Have never seen a guy so shellshocked in Joe’s life. Joe honestly thought Mankins was going to break down. He literally went from the penthouse to the outhouse overnight.

Let’s just say Joe would not be shocked if Mankins lost some motivation since the trade, and as the losses have mounted.

Logan Mankins is not to blame here, who in their right mind would want to leave a winning team and play for a 1-7 team. The only ones to blame here is Lovie (the Penguin) Smith & Jason (the Joker) Licht for forcing this on him, they are here to take over and to destroy the city of Tampa! Wham! Bam! Blah!

Pretty sure what we’re seeing from Mankins is a big ol’ case of don’t give a damn ’cause I don’t want to be here! Even with his advancing age, he should be better than what we’re seeing…if he gave a damn!
