McCown Calls Glennon “Pretty Efficient”

October 15th, 2014

McCownGlennonMike Glennon fan Josh McCown likes what he sees from No. 8.

Yesterday at One Buc Palace, Joe asked McCown to comment on Glennon’s performance and share some of what he likes about the Bucs’ offense.

“I feel like Mike’s playing, you know, pretty efficient for the most part. That’s what you want to have,” McCown said.

“At this point, we’ll look. That’s what you can do at the bye, kind of go back and look at the season as a whole where you’re at after six games and, you know, make a judgment on that. And see where the bright spots are, because those are the things you want to hang on to and build on. But when you’re 1-5, there’s not near as many as there needs to be.”

First and foremost, McCown likes the way the Bucs’ passing game has evolved.

“I think, No. 1, just targeting, getting the ball all over the field, like getting it downfield has really been good,” McCown said. “Seeing the guys get downfield and make plays.”

He heaped further praise on Glennon for how he’s performed despite “running a little behind” because of limited first-team reps through the summer. And McCown said Glennon is “throwing the ball well.”

As Joe wrote yesterday, it appears McCown will be ready to play sooner rather than later. There’s no logical reason to return him to the lineup, and Joe suspects McCown would understand that decision, if Lovie Smith makes that wise decision.

McCown sure get’s excited over MG’s play. I know he’s itching to get in to see if he can replicate it, since the team is so much better now than early on. Lovie will probably give him another chance to shine.

  2. OneLove Says:

The McCown experiment should be over! Let’s let Glennon WOW other teams with his performances against everyone elses “prevent” defenses and hopefully get some trade value for him! 🙂

Were definitely getting a top 3 draft pick and were definitely drafting a QB!

  3. Buc Fan #237 Says:

So McCown truly is a clown… i mean a McClown.

  4. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Well if there is anything positive to take out of this experience it’s that the team has some class acts.

GMAC throwing himself under the bus is a mark of a TRUE leader. Look in the mirror first.

McCown likewise has handled this situation with class and dignity. My greatest hope for Josh McCown is that someday he gets a shot at coaching. He seems to have inspired the team before his physical flaws were exposed. He has solid leadership skills. I think Lovie should give McCown his first big break and keep him as a backup for the next two years and let him replace Arroyo as QB coach and let Arroyo continue as OC and see what they can do.

Imagine this. What if the defense has performed as expected? Would we really be btching so much about the offense. We’d certainly have a couple more wins if the defense has been even adequate. No the offense hasn’t set the world on fire but I do see improvement on the OL and at QB and our receivers when healthy are pretty good. Running back? Not so much.

The debate now is how much of this disaster is due to lack of talent and how much due to horrible coaching. I suspect of course it’s a mix but right now it’s awfully hard not to throw this coaching staff under the bus for horrible game planning and use of resources.

Is there a legit reason to continue asking this guy what he thinks? He doesn’t play and he poops the bed when he does play. I don’t want to hear anything else from this walking mistake.

  6. Zam Says:

Has anyone ever gotten as much out of 3 wins as this guy? People seem to look at him as a fountain of give sage advice, when he’s only won 16 games in his entire 13-year career.

  7. DB55 Says:

As a mgm’er I hope mclown gets to play. I’m just pissed off and don’t want to see glennon contribute after all the hate by coaches and fans. I want to see mclown go in and make us look like an even bigger joke than we already do.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

The 10 million dollar, FA, clipboard holding, QB mentoring, 12 year veteran, speaks again.

It’s like EF Hutton. When McCown talks people listen. He knows.

  9. rayray1 Says:

Stubborn Lovie will start McCown as soon as he can.

  10. slowbucs813 Says:

@DB55 Hope that was sarcasm. If not im speechless

  11. buctebow Says:

I doubt McCown even wants to start. He is comfortable and making good money as the backup. Plus I’m sure he noticed how Glennon got hammered last game. For those who want a new QB, I would bet that the Bucs do not choose a 1st round QB in the draft, maybe none at all (bummer). I think it will be an olineman or two and the rest defense.

  12. kevin Says:

The offense…our offense…any offense will never work without creative plays being ran and those plays being called to where the defense cannot predict what is about to happen. Last week I watched two runs up the middle on first and second downs for no gain. Nothing has changed. If McCown likes what he sees in our passing game he needs glasses. Nothing will be any better after the by week. I just hope Tedford comes back next year and hopefully by then our defense will have better guys or better play maybe both in the secondary and a better pass rush. Our offense will look like it has for the rest of the season….Sad bucs fan and Tampa Native….

  13. buc4lyfe Says:

That’s hilarious!!! Lol of all people it’s mccown who says about Glennon “he’s pretty efficient for the most part” haha yea it’s really bad for mike Glennon mob but maybe he has a right to say that after all mccown has a better passing percentage haha I love it

Nope! For once, I’m not being sarcastic. Fed up! Take mclown, lovely, frazier and Geraldine and shove them up ……..honestly gerald is alright I just like effen with him cuz it’s fun and he’s a leader so he can deal with it. The rest of these bums though idk. It’s getting real old real fast.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Starting McCown would put extreme pressure on him and also Lovie…..we have enough pressure now.
McCown is a class act….watch him on the sidline genuinely rooting for Glennon….its not fake….
Can you even imagine Freeman in that role?….

  16. ToesOnTheLine Says:

McCown might not be a good QB NFL starter, but he seems like a good teammate. Let him be a backup and do what he can to help Glennon contine getting valuable experience so he keeps improving. Hate to burst the Glennon haters bubble, but as long as Lovie is HC you have a snowball’s chance in South Florida of seeing a high round QB drafted. Glennon is good enough to win with a top 10 defense, and that is what Lovie will desperately strive to put on the field next year.

  17. buc4lyfe Says:

Lovie is going to try and salvage this season and get a winning record, I can’t wait because we’re about to fond out what this guy thinks of both his quarterbacks. No more coach speak he’s going to have to address it

  18. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    @ buc4lyfe

We’re talking about Rex Grossman Lovin’ Lovie Smith here, so he probably is thinking how lucky he is to have both MCCown and Glennon. He’d be right on both (Glennon is a solid starter and McCown a solid backup to Glennon)

  19. OneLove Says:

    @ToesOnTheLine

I think you mean Glennon is a solid backup and McCown is a solid practice squad QB…

  20. Jonny 2.3 Says:

One one hand we have McCown who has proven to be a class act all the way. On the other hand we have clowns among fans who think it is funny to call him McClown. I am all for Glennon rest of this season, but I would not be disappointed to see McCown start again to read comments from you clowns.

  21. Patrick Says:

We won a Super Bowl with Brad Johnson. Who was very good QB don’t get me wrong; just wasn’t phenomenal.

Chris Simms led us to the playoffs one year.

Trent Dilfer led us to the playoffs in ’97.

Doug Williams (who I think Bucs fans tend to overrate sometimes) quarterbacked us to an NFC Championship game.

And people think Glennon can’t get us wins? If Lovie would do what he was hired to do and make our defense even decent/mediocre, we would be winning some games right now.

  22. Stanglassman Says:

If Lovie went by stats he would start McCown. He has a higher QB rating and completion percentage.
All of the excuses people are making for Glennon can be used and are the same points I was making for McCown. You all are basically judging the guy on 1 (Rams loss by 2 and missed a easy FG) game. The 1st game the O-line was clearly the problem and McCown still had the team in position to win and the Def couldn’t stop them. The Falcons game was a blow out from the start. The Rams game McCown had all the issues Glennon has been dealing with a porous def, bad O-line play, and this was when Tedford was expected back and Arroyo was even less prepared.
I’m not choosing a side on the QBs but I don’t see why all the hate toward a class act like McCown.

  23. BoJim Says:

Stanglassman didn’t McCown lose the games he played (really like him) and isn’t MG8 going over 300 yds a game? Isn’t that what people were saying about him last year. I think he is progressing very well in spite of most of the team/coaching.

  24. tickrdr Says:

Hope is an optimistic attitude about future outcomes, i.e. things will get better.

I know we all hope that the offense, defense, and special teams will be better in the future, but how can the sum be greater than the parts?

Here is my question for you all.

Which individual players are playing better this year than last under Coach Lovie’s tutelage and system?

    tickrdr

  25. BoJim Says:

Also. McCown can’t handle the pressure and MGM doesn’t even blink.

  26. Stanglassman Says:

BoJim the O-line has a ways to go but is much better now than when McCown was playing. I don’t think anyone would argue with that. The Bucs hadn’t figured out the RG at all and LG Makins signed late in preseason and injured 20 min into the 1st game. Not to mention the Center EDS had a rough start to the season. McCown can move in the pocket better and pick up yards with his feet. He can also score in the red zone like he did scoring 2 TD in one game Vs the Rams. I’ll give Glennon credit though he has stood in there well under pressure. I think Glennon throws a good ball on intermediate routes not so much on long or touch passes.

  27. Skyline Crew Says:

Stanglassman, Not sure what rating you are looking at, but NFL has Glennon at 86.2 and McCown at 65.8.

  28. Jonny 2.3 Says:

I don’t think Glennon has necessarily outplayed McCown. Both have their share of inconsistencies. But Glennon’s style of play gets more from our offense. Even if he makes some bad passes, the defenses have to be worried about receivers at every level of the field. His strong arm and willingness to sling the arm unlike last year has really elevated the results from his inconsistent play. Make no mistake, Glennon is still inconsistent, his accuracy still comes and goes. But because he is willing to sling it where ever he sees favorable matchups, we are getting more productivity.

Compare that to McCown who for what ever reason was mostly restricted to within 20 yards. Our offense seemed stagnant with him. That being said McCown is a darn good option 1B and the hate is ridiculous. I personally think McCown would have done better against Ravens than Glennon. McCown has far more experience and audibled a ton in the first few games to buy protection from receiving TEs, FB and RBs.

  29. Louis Friend Says:

This is the only week I’ve ever been so hung over from a Bucs game that I honestly feel like it just happened, even 3 days after it’s over. The smell of carnage from Tampa has made it’s way to where I am near Chicago. There’s not a single soul alive who is worth speaking to that remotely respects anything this team is doing on the field. Might as well wear pink uniforms the rest of the year to give the boob charity some extra cash. At least something good will come of it.

  30. P'cola Buc Says:

Wow what an endorsement McCown has made of Glennon! He’s playing “pretty efficient”. Wow, such a lofty goal. Efficient….wait….not really quite efficient but “pretty” efficient. Wait again NOT just “pretty efficient” but pretty efficient “for the most part”….There it is my gentleman friends, we have our franchise quarterback. Someone who is pretty efficient for the most part. If we must suffer with a very poor record this year after all the offseason hype then goodness gracious get a top prospect at quarterback already”!
