So Far, The Old Chris Godwin Is Back

September 5th, 2026

Ready to rock.

If you are a regular consumer of JoeBucsFan.com media, you likely read the following in Joe’s training camp practice notes, or heard it on the “Ira Kaufman Podcast” or heard Joe on WDAE radio discuss it:

Chris Godwin looks sssooo smooth out there.

And he does. He’s in “mint condition,” as one Joe likes to say.

It seems Godwin is finally healthy, maybe for the first time since early in the the 2024 season, when he was dominant with a whopping 50 catches for 576 yards and five touchdowns in the first seven games. And with Bucs receivers now nicked up, it is going to be important for Godwin to avoid the injury bug.

Joe has a hunch Godwin will have a strong season if he stays healthy. And boy, KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles thinks the same way. This week, Bowles raved about how it appears the old Chris Godwin has reappeared at One Buc Palace.

“He looks good,” Bowles said. “He looked good all summer. He looked good in the spring.

“He’s in tip-top shape, and he’s ready to go. So, yeah, he looks very good to me. He looks like he’s himself.”

And that is exactly what the Bucs need. And if Godwin is himself and healthy, Joe thinks there are enough defensive coordinators that won’t fully appreciate Jalen McMillan and don’t know about Ted Hurst.

If defenses key on Godwin, defensive coordinators should learn the hard way about Hurst and McMillan.

He’s going to go down as one of the greatest Bucs of all time. He has earned every penny in Tampa. He’s sacrificed his body for this organization and has been disciplined in rehabilitation when he’s gotten seriously injured. You simply cannot keep this guy down and I am pumped to see him play healthy and lead this group of young receivers.

  2. Truth be Told Says:

If he can stay healthy-he really is a stud. This team has alot of weapons. We are about to see how much better the Putrid Pass Defense of recent past will be. LFG!!

  3. Todd Says:

Bucs receiving room is starting to look less like a depth chart and more like an HR complaint from opposing secondaries. We don’t need Godwin to turn back the clock. We just need him to violently remind it what time it is. Because, if defenses double Godwin, congratulations — you’ve just unlocked the McMillan and Hurst portions of the “McYou’reScrewed” menu.

    mr third down

  5. OLDSCHOOL1976 Says:

He will thrive in the new offense and have a year worthy of his paycheck. Best part is he can stay fresh since we have other guys that can play in the slot. He’s a beast when he’s 100%. Really looking forward to seeing this offense go with all the playmakers and healthy OLine.

  6. Geno712 Says:

He is real good between the 20’a. The only complaint is whether he can be a consistent TD scorer.

  7. Bojim Says:

    And Mek.

  8. Baking with Robinson Says:

Im eager to see this team is action. Im hoping Robinson creates a scoring machine. All the parts are in place. Let’s go get them!!!

  9. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Todd

    Nice take.

    I agree…

Pick your poison – I like this WR unit way better than last season’s.

Godwin’s injury history and EE’s toe injury makes me a little nervous though.

  10. Lt. Dan Says:

“….and don’t know about Ted Hurst.” Not sure I agree with you about this tidbit Mr. Joe. I’m pretty sure that any DC worth his salt knows everything about an upcoming OC to include said OC’s bathroom habits.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Chris Godwin has an opportunity to prove he can be as good as Mike Evans for this team. A leader for the young WRs. At the same time, he can start building a resume for the end of his contract. If he can stay healthy and get 1,000+ yards and 9-10 TDs… he’ll get very good offers.

This is an important year for him, because the young players are hipping at his heels. EE will make a huge leap this year. Last year he was only a few yards short of 1,000 yards (Bowles should have made sure he got them).

The guys behing EE as pretty hungry too. Hurst is popular, probably rightfully so…then McMillan, Johnson and Johnson.

    At least 3 potential superstars.

  12. Beeej Says:

Well he sure isn’t going anywhere before the ’28 league year, hope he stays ok

  13. Joseph C Simmons Says:

All last offseason all that was posted here was how Mike Evans looked amazing. Look at the season he had. Please stop jinxing CG14.

  14. Teacherman Says:

He’s one of the greatest Bucs of all time.

He was never a diva behind Mike Evans.

He was Tom Brady’s favorite target.

He was the key to Liam Coens defense.

He could easily get 1,500 yards this year.

Roquan Smith almost took off his ankle.

It was one of the worst injuries I’ve ever seen.

It’s a miracle that he is still playing.

  15. Bartow Buc Says:

If CG 14 can stay healthy, I believe he’s on his way to a Hall of Fame career.

    That’s my opinion!!

    Go Bucs !!

    Beat the Bengals !!
