NFL.com: Bucs Heavy Favorite To Win NFC South Landfill

Always motivated.
It seems the folks left over at NFL.com from the hostile takeover by Disney/BSPN are nearly in lockstep: The Bucs will be your 2026 NFC South landfill champions.
That means the Bucs get a home playoff game, and perhaps that will cement a return in 2027 of KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles.
Some 19 survivors at NFL.com voted to predict the playoff teams this winter. All but two of the voters chose the Bucs as the 2026 NFC South winner. The other two voters sided with the slimy Saints.
The two minority opinions came from Raza Umerani and Nick Shook.
Typing for the majority, Ben McWilliams explained why the Bucs will once again be the Kings of the NFC South landfill.
A healthy and motivated Baker Mayfield, who’s in a contract year, is the best QB in the division. I expect Mayfield to lead Tampa Bay back to the postseason after missing out last season, thanks to a three-way tiebreaker scenario.
The “best quarterback in the division” angle is a smart one, Joe believes. But maybe it is just Joe, but he’s starting to get offended by the constant Baker-Mayfield-has-a-chip-on-his-shoulder-and-will-be-motivated … this is insulting.
By typing this or speaking this, it suggests to Joe that these same folks believe Mayfield was never motivated before to help the Bucs win a Super Bowl. That the only way to get Mayfield motivated was to p!ss him off by low-balling him on a contract offer.
That would make Mayfield a fraud and Joe doesn’t think Mayfield is anything close to a fraud. Sure, Mayfield is motivated for a pay raise. Who among us isn’t?
This constant drumbeat of “Look out NFL, Baker Mayfield has a chip on his shoulder and he’s going to tear up every defense in the league” is borderline cartoonish to Joe.

Bootstrap, nice job keeping it real. I completely agree and have always detested the monikers. Anyone remember “Ozark watching, yam eating Dirk Koetter”?! Yam eating?! We had to cringe through that everyday for months. Yeah I know, what’s the big deal? I get it, but it’s always grated with me. But I always follow up with the fact that it’s by far the best Bucs blog in town. Or out of town for that matter. That said, I do agree with Joe in that it’s a cartoonish Angle.

I don’t see how the Bucs can be favored with a substandard HC and DC, and an OC who was only great against said DC last year. They do have a few promising new defensive players, but do you trust Lovie Bowles to use them correctly? I don’t. Didn’t Bowles recently say that Dennis might start again this year? Further proof there was ZERO self scouting or watching game film, Dennis is as bad at football as Bowles is at “scheming” it up.

Don’t take this as meaning the NFC South is some great division or anything, but I am also a little over the slander. “Winning a three way tiebreaker” , let me guess, all of them have 8 or 9 wins. Ha ha.
The national talking heads are all the same. You don’t need to like my team, but grow a pair. Say the Bucs or Saints are going to win 11 games this year. I promise you can say it and you won’t be laughed at because you are presenting “Can the Rams go undefeated” as a genuine talking point and getting away with it.

It’ll come down to health, as it always does. The Bucs are certainly the most talented team across the board in the NFL South and, in fact, probably one of the most talented teams in the entire NFC (nobody has the talent the Rams have, of course).

Totally agree with your bottom line Joe. Put a good TEAM around Baker (and especially a strong OLine) and he typically does well. Put a weak team around Baker (to include a very inexperienced OC) and he struggles (trying to compensate for weak supporting actors?). But hasn’t that been the story forever with most QBs? Guys like Geno Smith, Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson, the list goes on.
I’m also convinced now that Baker Mayfield, not Todd Bowles, is the reason Mike Evans left for San Fran. When it came to consistently getting the deep ball to Mike accurately enough to give him a fighting chance to come down with it, Baker was well behind Tom Brady, and even behind Jameis. And especially when he got hurt. Evans knew where his bread-and-butter plays were, and Baker didn’t cut it. For evidence go back & look at the deep balls thrown to Mike Evans last season. Even at the beginning of the year when Baker was healthy, he wasn’t connecting consistently with ME13.

Mayfield was beaten up because of a third string offensive line. Several of them are no longer with the team. I’ve never heard him use that as an excuse even though he could have. He wasn’t the one quitting last season and that is entirely on the coaching staff.
Mike Evans left because the Bucs were stock piling young receivers! Not to mention the offensive game plan with Robinson is ball control NOT go deep with 50/50 jump balls. There is no competition for him in San Francisco! Stibling? Kittle always injured! Mayfield did everything in his power to make sure Mike got his 1000 yards the year before so I’m going to strongly disagree that he left because of our QB

I felt the same way about the impact of us ‘stockpiling young receivers’ UNTIL I took a much closer look at those 8 games last year that Mike Evans played in. His frustration must’ve been off the charts.
Mike played in Games 1-3 (all wins), then in Game 7 (a loss), then in Games 14-17 (1 win, 3 losses). Looking at DEEP balls only, here’s how each of those games played out:
o Game 1: Baker was 3-for-10 deep … Mike was 0-for-2.
o Game 2: Baker was 2-for-9 deep … Mike was 1-for-4.
o Game 3: Baker was 3-for-8 deep … Mike was 0-for-2.
o Game 7: Baker was 1-for-13 deep … Mike was 0-for-3.
o Game 14: Baker was 7-for-9 deep … Mike was 3-for-4.
o Game 15: Baker was 1-2 deep … Mike was 0-for-0.
o Game 16: Baker was 4-for 10 deep … Mike was 1-for-4.
o Game 17: Baker was 2-for-3 deep … Mike was 0-for-0.
So overall, Baker threw 64 DEEP in those 8 games that Evans played in, and 23 were caught (35.9%). Of those, Mike was targeted on 19 DEEP, and caught only FIVE (26.3%).
Yes when he signed with San Fran, Mike Evans knew that we had Godwin, Egbuka, McMillan to contend with for targets if he stayed. But you could virtually see his frustration throughout the year. not only was he hurt unlike he’d ever been (the collarbone), but even on the deep targets he was getting (his bread-and-butter), he wasn’t coming down with the catches.

Landfill is the most apropo way to describe it. Perfect really. It’s not even an exaggeration to call this division a disgrace. Let’s say the Bucs go 8-9 and everyone else is 4-13, which is completely realistic by the way – just the idea of taking a home playoff game makes my skin crawl. This REALLY should be an opportunity for Tampa to go 13-4, get homefield for the entire playoffs but they will be just average enough to backdoor their way in. Don’t like my opinion? Cool – show me evidence to the contrary until proven otherwise

I don’t know if DR was inferring that Baker was the reason Mike left. The way I read DR’s comments is that Baker had greater success throwing deep to others than he did throwing to Evans. 35.9% successful on deep passes to others, 26.3% throwing to Evans. That doesn’t mean the others are better than Mike, only that they didn’t get the same attention from opposing defenses. That only shows that Evans as a downfield threat opens things up for the others. I don’t know how that success rate compares to the previous 2 seasons but if it was better for Evans in 2023, that was the last season he and Godwin were consistently on the field together. Maybe Godwin, when healthy, opened things up for Mike and Mike opened things up for Godwin. Most of the time in 2025 there was no one 100% healthy on the field.

The one that had Owen yelling “I am NOT a NUGGET!” all the time.
It applies to the Bucs. Being the NFC Dumpster Fire Division champ is like being the last nugget that gets flushed down the toilet. The main dump is gone, but there’s that one little nugget that comes back to get flushed again. That second flush for the Bucs is the first playoff game.
Same thing, year after year. Rinse, repeat. 8-9 or 9-8 because Todd is incapable of anything else.

You must be a lawyer Kenton, because offering 2 unpalatable choices & demanding a choice seems to be a well-established tactic in our judicial system today. The reality is that JBF is a BLOG, and I choose to take others’ positions (including the Joes) as OPINIONS. And I would assume that they choose to take mine & yours the same way.
That said, what I documented was Mike’s targets & catches in the 2025 season. My reference was Pro-Football-Reference’s game logs (the only place I could find that level of detail). PFR is a respected source for compiling data, but it’s still just data. Can’t really tell us anything about what MIGHT have been going through ME13’s head all during last season.

First team to 9 wins gets a home playoff game. Truth is, the Bucs have the talent to in 10 or 11 but the Bowles factor could shave 2 or 3 wins off of that total. Bucs are very fortunate the other teams in division are less talented and the Bucs have the 2nd place schedule this year, panthers have the first place one. Saints could surprise everyone. ATL might be in the Arch Manning sweepstakes.;

BTW, I for one love reading Rod’s comments. Oftentimes Rod’s comments are ‘contrary to the flow’, but I’m a huge advocate for that. Far too many on various sports’ sites are perfectly content to write a 1-2 line comment parroting the party line, instead of digging deeper (like Rod does), analyzing in greater depth what’s being said, THEN coming to an OPINION & sharing it.

I’m sick of the chip on the shoulder nonsense also. He’s crazily competitive every time he’s on the field and he clearly loves to play the game. Things he hears or things that happen off the field may get his blood boiling a little but it doesn’t translate on to the field. He knows he has to be fully in control of his faculties when he’s out on the field to be successful. There’s too much to think about while playing the game, there’s no room for thinking about outside distractions. Baker’s grudges from the past are slowly fading away and perceived slights in the present no longer have the same effect. It’s called growing up. I think he plays up a lot of that stuff just to get people talking. It’s good for business.

Since YOU asked, of course it did. BUT … Baker being banged up was a bigger factor in my opinion. Pure speculation on my part, but take a more detailed look at the Detroit game. Bucs lost 23-9 and that was the first game Evans had played in since Game 3 against the Jets.
The Bucs overall got badly beaten up in that Lions game, physically. Evans was lost for 6 games after that (Bucs went 1-5 in that stretch, only beating the Cards 20-17). But take a close look at Baker’s performance in that game …
o The Bucs running game was almost totally shut down by the Lions (12 runs for 41 yds) and so Baker had to pass … A BUNCH. He passed 50 times & completed 28 of those (56.0%) for 1 TD & 1 INT. He was sacked 4 times, and as I remember got pretty well beaten up himself in the process. That Lions game BTW was of the few in which Baker didn’t run the ball … at all.
o Our illustrious OC still though had him throwing DEEP … A BUNCH. Baker threw deep 13 times in that game … and completed ONE. Three of those throws were to Evans … he caught NONE.
The fact that Baker was able to throw deep on 13 of 50 passes (roughly one-quarter of them) tells me that he had time. If you subtract those deep 13 throws, Baker was 27-of-37 (73.0%) on the short & intermediate throws. Hmmm, and yet we only managed 1 TD & 1 FG on the day. Hmmm.

However you look at it, it doesn’t appear Mike would have gotten 1100 /1200 yards, or even 1K, had he remained here. Dude only has a year or 2 left, I’m sure he doesn’t want to spend it with 6 targets for 4 catches for 38 yards every game. I noticed in both ’23 and ’24 Mike had 70+ receptions for 1,255 and 1004 yards, 11/13 tuddies respectively. Yards per catch dropped under Coen

I’m sorry Kenton, I hadn’t seen that earlier post. He is entitled to his opinion of course. The data that he provided proves nothing. What were the success rate numbers with Brady and Jameis and who else was on the field with him. For example, having Gronkowski, Antonio Brown and Chris Godwin on the field at various times might make it a little easier to get single coverage. Also, better protection from a healthy oline might help the QB to get off a clean deep throw. Godwin missed games or was less than fully healthy since week 7 of 2024. So who was there to take the pressure off Evans. He wasn’t 100% healthy himself. In those circumstances, how can you have consistent success?

Great analysis. And yes, the 23-9 score pretty much tells it all (scoring a total of 9 pts isn’t usually a cause for celebration). But IMO, we did it to ourselves, by focusing so much on the deep ball.
Our RBs not being able to run the ball effectively didn’t help. Baker not running the ball at all didn’t help (his legs gained us 27 first downs last year). But Baker was still effective with the short & intermediate stuff (73% completions). And he was especially effective passing to Cade Otton (7-for-9 for 65 yds) and to Sterling Shepard (7-for-7 but for only 25 yds). Unfortunately the emphasis on the deep ball in that game screwed up almost every drive (Bucs were only 4-for-16 on 3rd down conversions). That’s bad.
Our defense actually did reasonably well holding the Lions to 25 pts, but we couldn’t stop their run (Lions ran it 32 times for 164 yds and 2 TDs). Goff was 20-for-29 for 241 yds with 1 TD & 1 INT. Lions on the day though were only 3-for-13 on 3rd down conversions, and we sacked Goff 4 times.
Overall though, far too much emphasis on the deep ball in that game. More short passes MIGHT have kept drives alive, and maybe even allowed our running game to get a better foothold. Bucky was missing in that game; White ran it 10 times for 38 yds (3.8 YPC) but Tucker only got 1 carry for 4 yds.

The Detroit game we were down 14-0. We kicked a long field goal before the half to make it 14-3 before the half. We took the second half kickoff and drove the field to make it 14-10 early third quarter. Oops. Some dumba$$ decided it was a good idea to go for 2. So it was 14-9 and us losing the momentum instead of 14-10 and us having the momentum. We did the same damn thing twice against Buffalo. Could only shake my head. I’m thinking our new special teams coach will be able to tell Bowles NO, when NO needs to be said.

DR, why are you pointing to Baker as the reason leading to Mike’s departure. In your post, the presumption is that Mike Evans was not the problem regarding the lack of deep throw success. Then, using the Lions game, you point to data that you say implies Baker had plenty of time to throw, thus exonerating the offensive line of any culpability. When healthy, everyone says we have at minimum a top 5 offensive line. Well, they weren’t on the field against the Lions. Are we to conclude that our back up offensive line are terrific too? Also, I don’t see any mention of the offensive coordinator’s responsibility for the failures in the passing game or running game. One affects the other. Let’s say that we find out that Mike did leave because in his mind, Baker was the problem. That doesn’t make it true. We do know that blaming others for failure is a common pastime.

DR. It’s so effing hot outside that I’ve been stuck inside for 2 weeks. My wife has boycotted cooking – says it’s too hot- and I have been eating every kind of salad any idiot has ever put in a recipe book. I’m stirring up shlt cause I’m bored as hell. At least the grass has quit growing.
I read yours and Munch’s comments first after reading stories. But you know how hot Florida is- I was there last month, stayed a week almost in a nice house in Freeport, backyard cozied up to the 13th hole of a fancy golf course. You know how hot Florida is. It was hot but not as hot as NE Ok. is right now. It’s been 90 degrees at midnight every night and only once or twice this last few weeks has the temperature dropped below 80. We’ve clinched the 4th hottest summer in history here, and the heat dome in place over us isn’t even moving.
Your opinion matters to me. I’m going out to eat tonight- something I am not a big fan of. I like eating at home. I can’t even plant my fall garden it’s so hot. But I’ll eat me a good steak and baked potato tonight (eff the salad) and maybe I won’t be as much a prlck tomorrow.
I don’t know much, but the days are getting shorter. Never seen a fall yet where the colors don’t change or a spring where the daffodils don’t bloom. Better days ahead, I can feel it!

Apparently what I really believe about Mike’s leaving didn’t make its’ way into that earlier analysis Oscar. Poor writing on my part.
Mike had had ELEVEN straight season of 1,000 receiving yards or more. I might be wrong, but I believe that tied Jerry Rice’s record. Then along comes 2025. He had been hurt in several seasons, but had never missed more than 3 games in any 1 season. His overall catch percentage isn’t all that great (46.8% overall), but his Yards Per Reception was fantastic (a low of 13.6 to a high of 17.7 YPR). IOW, Mike was fully aware that he needed the TARGETS to keep his streak alive (and be a shoo-in into the HOF?).
And he got the targets in Tampa, everything from a low of 110 targets in 2024 in which he ended up with 1004 yards, to a high of 173 targets in 2016 when he ended up with 1321 yards. Then in 2025, because of his injuries mostly, his targets plummeted to only 62 in 8 games, and he ended up with only 368 yards. That had to be a real bummer for Mike.
Periodically on TV you could see Mike’s frustration glare thru. His catching the deep ball had always been a strength, and yet in 2025 it wasn’t a strength at all. He was 5-of-19 deep (26.3% caught), whereas he was 25-of-43 short & intermediate (58.1%), much more inline with his career catching percentage (54.3%).
I believe that Mike left for a variety of reasons … reasons that ALL fueled his frustration. I think that getting into the HOF (yes, on the 1st ballot) is extremely important to Mike. And 2025 wasn’t an ego-booster I’m sure. The Bucs bringing on Egbuka in particular probably struck a nerve (too many more mouths to feed), but I think it was a confluence of factors that drive him to want to leave. Remember, if reports were correct, the Bucs offered him significantly more money than San Fran to STAY.

If the Bucs sweep their division games they need only go 4-7 outside to he division to win it. This unlikely path is still probably the most likely path as I cannot see them winning more than 4 games outside the division. It’s the Bowles factor.

Beej, enjoyed your observations on the NL East. I’m of the dissing of the Bucs’ division; I don’t think it’s necessarily great, but I also think it’s hard to evaluate conferences, divisions, or league’s as a group. In baseball, I hear a lot about the great AL East, but they haven’t produced many World Series winners in the last fifteen years. To be picky, it’s a long time since I did math, but I think the parentheses in your formula should be wins + (0.5 x ties)/ games. Thanks for doing the calculating.

Repeatability, consistency and relevance year in and year out is what the true measure is and the bfc south winning percentage compared to other divisions over even the last decade is so proudly bad that it’s embarrassing and not only that – the falcons, saints, and panthers are boring and unwatchable. Irrelevant and no one cares about them. Baker keeps the Bucs semi nationally relevant and the Bucs seem to be perennially in this loop of being just good (or bad) enough to backdoor their way in. Someone needs to freaking rise up – get their shi together, and take absolute control

You had me laughing my a$$ off reading that Kenton. I’d freak out if my wife ever said ‘It’s too hot to cook’. Well, after I reminded her that it is a kitchen after all, with a hot stove in it. Then I’d pay for my wise-a$$ comment for weeks & weeks I’m sure.

@DR..Eggy was brought in because of Evans age and declining health.he was a shoo in for HOF several yrs ago That dude has more miles on him then a 59 caddy! Everyone believed he was a Buc for life and at his age he was the perfect mentor to the young guys at all the positions. Injuries and losing affect players in different ways Its the classic human saga of ” the grass is greener on the other side. Look at him now hes already banged up ,he did the team a favor and bounced!

@DR..As I read your dissertation about Evans I had to fight back the tears!! NOT! The game is a business 1st..No different then that old Ford in my driveway tickles and dimming me Had to get rid of it ,got a new younger one
