“It Looked Like The First Game For Us”
September 15th, 2026
Todd Bowles used to have the secret sauce for winning on opening day, but Bowles always claimed there was no such thing.
Joe’s heard Bowles asked a dozen times about how he always had his Bucs sharp on opening day, winning in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. And three of those Week 1 games were on the road against decent teams. But Bowles never flinched, he would simply praise how hard coaches and players worked to prepare in the summer. There was no magic.
Well, the Bucs lost yesterday. Streak broken.
And while most fans are pointing a finger of blame at Baker Mayfield’s three fumbles, Joe thinks the troubles went beyond that. Four out of six Bucs captains had subpar games, including the horror shows from Mayfield and Alex Anzalone.
Too many presnap penalties, a bad personal foul, and there was more.
Bowles told WFLA-TV sports that the Bucs didn’t look ready to hit the season running.
“It looked like the first game for us, and we got to be way better than come this week, “Bowles said. “So that’s what [Bowles and the team] talked about [after the game] for the most part. We’re going to correct the mistakes, put it to bed, and we’ll move on to Cleveland.”
There were strong individual performances, of course. And Bucs special teams looked vastly improved.
Joe might have been most rattled by the Bucs’ offensive line. They had no reason to be off their collective game. The standard is very high for that experienced group.

Before you say the Defense played better read the following
Defense gave up
351 yards of offense
245 passing
106 rushing
8/14 on 3rd down
1 sack
1 Punt forced
Allowed 26 points
Oh and the Bengals TE is still wide open on every play

KC looked pretty good in their first game…
September 15th, 2026 at 12:02 pm
Godwin tired of the coaching already!! still no excuse to DOG it!!! We need Rozeboom in there for Anzalone on occasion, that was unacceptable Between Vea and Anzalone, did Vea play?? We lose to Cleveland heads must roll immediately!! Go Bucs
September 15th, 2026 at 12:02 pm
It is called flat. Terrible coaching or terrible personel. Weak links at all the wrong places…4-13 year coming. We are doomed. After the pushover Browns this week a string of loss. Doom. Bowles Doom. JBF Doom. Oh well getting bored with it. The only thing the Bucs were better is the uniforms. How cam Bengal fans tand that Orange out. Uggh

Remember the days of Jameis Winston when we were never sure of which version of him would show up?
Good Jameis was capable of a clean game with sterling numbers – just to turn around a week later and see Bad Jameis show up and toss 4 picks.
Baker is a lot more like Jameis than gets mentioned. A lot more.
September 15th, 2026 at 12:41 pm
All of the problems from week one were fixable.
The effort was very good. They did not quit. With one or two breaks, they would have been in a position to win the game.
No one really expected them to go 17â0, so itâs not the end of the season.
September 15th, 2026 at 12:47 pm
its funny i didnt see those godwin videos but my posts immediately after the game were targeted at godwin being a bigger problem than mayfield(there was a reason baker was holding on to the ball too long) . the next big problem is obviously the pass rush . baker messed up that game but i am not worried about him over the entirety of the season as i am with godwin and the pass rush
September 15th, 2026 at 12:49 pm
Ken is correct to a point-most issues are fixable, but if Anzalone is that bad against Cleveland, then the question becomes will we have another season long mess like Reddick last year????

Joe … ‘And while most fans are pointing a finger of blame at Baker Mayfieldâs three fumbles, Joe thinks the troubles went beyond that. Four out of six Bucs captains had subpar games’.
Very nice attempt to get Mayfield off the hook Joe, but his THREE fumbles was pretty much the story of the game (although Bucky might have caught up to him if given more carries).
Those 6 Bucs’ captains also happen to represent an investment of $136 mil in actual salary and a tad over $160 mil in salary CAP hits. That’s a LOT of moolah for the productivity that they showed as a group on the field in Cincy on Sunday. I kinda feel that the six of them should at a minimum give the Glazers a group hug in appreciation of their generosity.
September 15th, 2026 at 12:56 pm
PRESEASON
Teaams should play at least one half with their starters and their plays. Tony Dungy was adamant about doing that to avoid game one gliches.

Further proof that Licht is a charlatan and a buffoon. TB12 made him look smart.
As far as the latest excuses thrown out by Bowels, he needs to fire the DC.
Once heâs gone and Licht gets canned, we can start being a real football team again.

Oxycondomns … ‘my posts immediately after the game were targeted at godwin being a bigger problem than mayfield (there was a reason baker was holding on to the ball too long)’.
Didn’t see your posts after the game Oxy, so it’d be helpful if you’d elaborate. I for one am presupposing that Godwin wasn’t getting any separation, thus Mayfield had no one to throw to? Did the same situation exist with our other WRs, TEs & RBs, or was it JUST Chris?
The one thing that I noticed repeatedly is that the Bengals receivers seemed to often get a LOT more open for Burrow than our Bucs receivers did for Mayfield. Several of Baker’s throws were into very tight windows, but were accurate & usually the receiver hauled it in. Baker did complete 23-for-27 (85.2%) so that kinda implies some pretty good accuracy.

When your QB and running back
Put you in a 21-3 hole, because of their (Dumb) fumbles
The players are going to lose their motivation
And that’s exactly what happen
And then when they run to regain their composure
Their $165 million QB, fumbled away the ball again
He’s the highest paid player in Buccaneers history
And he’s playing (wreckless) football like he belongs in the Pop Warner League
There’s no excuse for that
People can makeup stupid excuses, they only make themselves look stupid
September 15th, 2026 at 1:13 pm
Actually it looked like your last 8 games Todd. We lost down the stretch to the worst teams in the league. Barely beating Carolina to end the season. The same Carolina the Bears just put a 59 burger on.
September 15th, 2026 at 1:13 pm
@defense rules
those were my exact words and thoughts that godwin wasnt getting any separation. also there might be a percentage of blame that goes to the coordinator where baker was looking downfield at the wrs backs . i thought emeka did better then godwin and maybe that we needed to see more of what hurst can do. but im really disappointed at godwin loafing on bakers attempt at a td run i didnt notice that before till i was directed at the youtube video. he could have recovered that ball with effort that kind of shocked me.
September 15th, 2026 at 1:17 pm
Clearly the Bucs superior coaching and QB won this game. The NFL got the score wrong and stole the game for the Bengals. Bucs WIN! Bucks Win!
September 15th, 2026 at 1:17 pm
Excuses and near misses aside, a loss is a loss, and you only get 17 tries a season. Every loss is important, no matter against who or how well you played when losing.
Which brings me to … Cleveland!
This is the biggest game of Bowles’ career. A loss this week against the Browns would solidify Todd as a first ballot Hall of Shamer.
I don’t see it happening. Nobody does for that matter. But if it does, is Todd Bowles still our head coach come Monday morning?
He wouldn’t be with some owners, especially those with any knowledge of football. But with the Glazers, who knows?
As living proof that money is often wasted on the rich, they might even extend him.
And remember, Coen buried them last week. If we lose, or even keep it close, that would be another reminder of how the Glazer boys let the better coach get away.
September 15th, 2026 at 1:18 pm
Even if we beat the Browns it will be a 20-17 nail biter.
Thatâs the best Turd Bowels can muster.
Heâs the Sultan of Suck!
September 15th, 2026 at 1:22 pm
No one else hardly ever mentions it but does Bowles and his OCâs know you can go to the hurry up offense before itâs the only option. When they were down 14-3 and even more they were taking their sweet a$$ time. and using all the clock. They could of had at least another drive with all the time they wasted once down over a touchdown. Also, you canât just assume that if you score that the Bengals are not gonna score as well and you will need even another drive. This repeated itself over and over and over last year. Also was a clear opportunity to go for 2 points on that last Buc touchdown. The TEâs ran free in the middle of the field just like always.
Everyoneâs trying to say that Bowles didnât lose this game, but he did us no favors with his game management. It sucks as always. Color me disgusted! He never changes.
Try something different!!! If Anzalone or other LBs are struggling in coverage, pull them out in obvious passing downs and put in Garnes or SMB and have them cover the tight end.
September 15th, 2026 at 1:25 pm
Donât mistake tight lips as a sign of a tight locker room!
Think of it as a powder keg or a IDE that is just waiting for someone to touch it off!

But hey!

“Several of Bakerâs throws were into very tight windows, but were accurate & usually the receiver hauled it in. Baker did complete 23-for-27 (85.2%) so that kinda implies some pretty good accuracy.”
This is how easy it is to be misled by volume stats.
Bucky was our leading receiver catch 7 of 7 passes. -25 yards before the catch, meaning he really had to make up 73 yards but only got credited with 48 yard because all of his catches were at our behind the LOS.
Kenny Gainwell the better receiving back got ONE target that he caught 5 yards behind the LOS, that count as completions.
That’s 8 of 12 of those green dots posted on the passing chart Joe has on this site right now. When more than half your completion are at/behind the LOS, you better complete them, even the one that went nowhere which kind of defeats the purpose of passing the ball to begin with. Sure, accuracy
That’s 8 of 12 of the completions Baker completed behind the OL.
September 15th, 2026 at 1:31 pm

September 15th, 2026 at 2:50 pm
At the 3:19 mark Bucs score and cut it to 6 points. Defense needs to hold one series and get the ball back to the offense. This never happens with a Todd B defense. Clock expires with Cinci holding the ball. Same old story. A real DC and a real defense would have gotten the ball back. This is the real story of the game that got muffled with the fumbles.
September 15th, 2026 at 2:51 pm
“Warren: Mayfield averaged 9+ yards per completion”
167 of 216 total passing yards came off YAC which means the ball traveled a total of 49 yards gained before the catch on all of 23 receptions. Again, it’s easy to be misled.
That’s 2.1 air yards per completion. With Bucky, Otton, & Gainwell combining for -35 yards before their 11 combined receptions which is about half of all Bakers’ completions.
Hurst, CG, & Egbuka caught the other 12 passes for 80 yards. 59 of those 80 yards, YAC.
Textbook dinkage and dunkery
September 15th, 2026 at 2:57 pm
Why should the defense get the ball.back for the offense
So they can fumble it away again?
It seems like that’s all they was doing
So they gonna come back with 3:19 left
After stinking the field for 45 minutes
It don’t make sense
September 15th, 2026 at 3:00 pm
“At the 3:19 mark Bucs score and cut it to 6 points. Defense needs to hold one series and get the ball back to the offense.”
This fool is literally talking about the last drive of the game, lol
The damage was done and it didn’t start looking close until Josiah ran that pick 6 back w/2:24 left in the 3rd quarter to make
Our offense had 2 drives after the same defense generated that pick 6 and made it a 1 score game and the offenses first possession after the pick 6 was a turnover. Stop this BS

Almost an entirely new voaching staff and the same old results on the field.

DR bring way more to the table as a commenter than you, in fact the only time you talk is to refer to people as children and there’s hardly ever a coherent, respectable football take. Even Rod makes good points, even though you tell he’s learning how football works on the fly just so he can irrationally critique.

They should get rid of Todd Bowles
And Bowles should take Jason Licht and Baker Mayfield, Zac Robinson with him
We need a new HC, DC, GM, QB ,OC
Until we get those 5 pieces
The puzzle will be incomplete
And we will continue to stink the field

September 15th, 2026 at 3:37 pm
I heard Bowles respond to a question about leaving the middle of the field wide open on defense. He stated, there are no defensive plays/set ups where the middle of the field should be left uncovered. Well, in his/our defense at least the last 2 seasons, the middle of the field is consistently left uncovered. So who is making these mistakes and why hasn’t it been fixed? Does a player have that many responsibilities on any given play that he gets confused? idk, we either need smarter defensive players or a simpler scheme. I did hear him comment that we were in a zone on at least one of those plays and someone obviously was no where they were supposed to be. Same crap…different year.
September 15th, 2026 at 3:38 pm
Iâm thinking everyone here, or most, anyway, are making a mountain out of a molehill. When itâs really just a rock in the road, a pebble, really.
Has anybody here ever played any football?
Our coaching was fine. Our special teams were fine. Our offensive line was fine. Our defense was better.
Mayfield hasnât fumbled more than once in a game for a turnover since 2021. He had three fumbles for turnovers- all in key situations. Then Bucky lost one?
Weâd have beaten them by 2 touchdowns except for one thing. Our QB couldnât do his job. Alot of great QBs average one turnover per game. No great QBs average 1.5 turnovers per game. But 3?

As l stated earlier
These 5 positions are the keys to a successful football team
It’s a must to have a good QB, one that don’t make many mistakes
A QB that make plays when you need him to make plays
You must have a GM that will reload the roster with quality players
And maintain a roster full of quality players
You need a younger HC, who can communicate with today’s players
A HC who can make difficult decisions under pressure
A HC who would hold the players accountable
You need a OC who has vision, who is creative
An OC who can scheme around any defense
One that has an offensive mind, one that recognize mismatches
And you need a DC who puts his players in a position to succeed
One that recognizes a player strength and his weaknesses
A DC who can adapt to stopping the modern offenses
It’s sad to say
But l don’t believe we have any of the 5
September 15th, 2026 at 4:04 pm

————————
I don’t mind the passes behind LOS if they’re check downs that avoid forcing the ball to a WR and they don’t lose yards. Some of it could also be a way to make the short pass game an extension of the run game which I’ve been hoping Zac would get creative with.
There was nothing wrong with our offense that a couple less fumbles and penalties couldn’t (won’t) fix. Of course I’d like to see more explosives but I’m happy moving the chains and the explosives will come as the season moves along.

WBL … ‘This is how easy it is to be misled by volume stats.’
Au contraire WBL. All ‘volume stats’ do is show ‘the BIG picture’. Along those lines … ‘Baker did complete 23-for-27 (85.2%) so that kinda implies some pretty good accuracy.’
Those plays behind the LOS have been Bucs’ staples since TB12 was here. Back in 2020, Lenny caught 36-of-47 for 233 yds. Of those, YBC was MINUS 2, and YAC was 235. McCoy was 15-of-19 for 101 yds; YBC was MINUS 1 and YBC was 102.
Mayfield has just continued that. In 2023 Rachaad was 64-of-70 for 549 yds; YBC was MINUS 62 yds and YAC was 611 yds. Similar stats for Edmonds & Tucker that year. Nothing’s changed since. Well, except the OCs.

Bowles and Baker are 0-1 and are both scrubs.
Blind leading the blind. Mike knows.

Harold Fanning jr prop 36.5 yds receiving yards. His normal average is 21. I’m still taking the over.

âSome of it could also be a way to make the short pass game an extension of the run game which Iâve been hoping Zac would get creative with.â
It is an extension of the run and also the sort of offense we resorted to last year when we didnât have an adequate deep threat.
âAu contraire WBL. All âvolume statsâ do is show âthe BIG pictureâ. Along those lines ⌠âBaker did complete 23-for-27 (85.2%) so that kinda implies some pretty good accuracy.ââ
Sir. 52% of the the passes completed didnât breach the LOS. For all that we might as well add handoffs to the completion %, because the bar and degree of difficulty on these throws are low. You better complete that pass when that skill guys is 7 paces away from you, fym?
I know how useful passing out of the backfield can be, and also realize itâs not as useful when thatâs what youâre predominately doing in your run game. Thatâs a stunted pass game, not some type of effective tact why do you think Baker held onto the ball so long pretty much throughout the game? Cincy put a lid on our offense

SUCH a great point. Lots of people on here who refuse to admit it, and act as if it was this huge mystery, while trying to blame literally everything they possibly can ON Bowles. But, like I said, great WRâs do not typically LEAVE great QBâs and just walk-away, like HE DID. Especially, after being THE face of the franchise for 12-YEARS, and WINNING a Super Bowl. THEN, to go out of his way to mention that he was looking for and wanting to play for a great QB in San Fran⌠I mean, he did NOT have to do that. Thatâs why all the Bois would try so hard to shutdown the conversation on here, complaining about every single article that Joe posted on Mike Evans. And, then would immediately start blaming a SINGLE 3rd & 28 PLAY, the Head Coach, or try saying that it was some big mystery⌠Or, that Mike was just selfish because he wanted all the targets. Absurd. IF he believed in THIS football team, and THIS Quarterback, now do you REALLY THINK he wouldâve still wanted to leave!? Again, a STUD WR is not leaving a GREAT QB like HE DID, really out of nowhere. And, for HALF THE MONEY (easily, after accounting for taxes, living expenses, and having to move across the entire country). It wasnât JUST a 3rd & 28. I could see-it myself, that HE was also, extremely frustrated with one, Bake Mayfield. Notice how weird and quiet Baker HIMSELF was after it happened. There was definitely âsomethingâ going on there, between the TWO. I saw-it. Sometimes, you just have to wake up and LOOK. These Baker Bros are just living inside of this dream.

Man, didnât hear anybody say that tired âweâll be fine without Mikeâ on or since Sunday. Hurst didnât even get a target until Cincy went into a 2-high shell to basically play prevent with about 5 minutes in the game. Mike officially has more receiving TDs than our entire team lol.

@ Lakeland Says: âWe need a new HC, DC, GM, QB ,OC
Until we get those 5 pieces
The puzzle will be incomplete
And we will continue to stink the field
Clean the entire house, not a few roomsâ
You can forget that NOW. That ship has already sailed, along with the Baker Mayfield extension. Just think about how much âflexibilityâ we couldâve had this off-season, too! Itâs enough to make you JUST SICK. Even, if they did hire a new coach and GM, itâd more than likely be someone too weak to trade him⌠IF they even could. His current contract will make it almost âimpossibleâ to trade him. Nobody would be willing to take that monstrosity on. Iâm already getting bored with all of this. And, Iâm afraid that itâll only get worse.

“It looked like the first game for us.”
What the f**k does that even mean?
Why were there so many teams around the league where it did NOT look like the first game for them?
I’m so damned tired of B-wlzo’s f’ing excuses week after week for years on end now.
STFUandGTFO already!!!

Warren Brooks Lynch – Of course, thatâs not going to hold up. Mike wouldâve gotten plenty of targets here, too. The Niners also have other weapons. I just think theyâre relationship soured and Mike didnât trust Baker (and Bowles) to be âthe manâ to get himself, and the team to where he wanted to be. He didnât have to make that comment about Purdy and Shanahan. Mike sacrificed a lot to WIN with Brady⌠And, I think he wouldâve done the exact same to win with BAKER. I donât believe that it was JUST over his target share. I felt-like, a lot of times, Baker seemed to hang in the pocket and hold onto the ball forever, while staring him down. I felt-like, Baker probably relied on Mike maybe, a little too much even!? I think Bakerâs actual PLAY last season is what truly pushed everything over the ledge.

It mustâve been a rough weekend for you now that I think about it.
Mateer and the Sooners got dropped like a satellite call. Then your boy embarrasses himself and this team after getting his pay day. I feel for you.

And WBL. If you think throwing a screen pass behind the line of scrimmage is an easier pass to throw than a quick slant or buttonhook or 7 yard out- you donât know what youâre talking about.

WBL. Not as much of a college fan anymore. I donât have much vested in my Sooners anymore. Name, image and likeness kind of spoiled the college game for me- for now, anyway. Never been a fan of Mateer.

Welcome to reality, Lakeland. You may not like the view but the air is a lot more clean. Congrats!

Let me be the 1st then…..We’ll be fine without Mike. He had a good game – happy for him but so what ? We lost because we turned the ball over 4 times not because Mike is in SF. We need to get J-Mac back on the field and Zac needs to spread sh$t around. Hurst should have gotten touches early…. Tez needs a few more targets and no more of those silly jet sweeps.

Really? I think the Bucs run all over the Bengals.
Then they stop the run and force enough mistakes to win.
momâs boyfriend got mad at Matt after betting the rent money on the Bucs –
made Matr stand in the corner for an hour wearing a dunce cap – poor Matt

I actually feel very good about the Buc’s. If we can stay healthy (big ask), we will win a bunch of games and make playoffs. I know we have a badass schedule but we could have easily handled the Bengals.

Bucs must have hired a new third string QB, Maker Fumblefield or Fumble Makerfield? Or maybe that was Baker playing last Sunday.

Being blindly optimistic is also beating a dead horse. Itâs all well and good to love the team but that saying goes both ways
I donât look at this as overly pessimistic or overly positive. There were good aspects to the game and obviously very poor aspects.
At the beginning of the week I said it was reasonable to lose. I thought that a loss would be us losing 33-30 in something of a shootout. Instead what I saw was a defense that did make plays they were not capable of last year and an offense that was able to move the ball consistently. I also saw a defense that couldnât get off the field in too many instances and an offense that didnât look very dynamic and had issues finishing and was actually pushed around at times physically.
At the beginning of the season many optimists cited a return to the â24 offense and a somewhat improved defense as the reason why. I still like the roster but this is a trend at this pointâŚturnovers on offense, not much creativity on offense and a defense that just isnât good enough.
If Bowles is to get to 10 wins, he has to win games like Sunday when the other team wasnât playing very well. Instead we received more of the same. Itâs not logical at all to think this guys is capable of reversing it.
September 16th, 2026 at 1:47 am
Baker Mayfield singlehandedly lost the game.
That makes 5 of the last 6 games for Tampa where Baker singlehandedly lost the game and didn’t give the team a chance to win.
September 16th, 2026 at 1:48 am
The defense gave up 16 points when the Bengals started on their side of the field … and the defense scored 7 points.
So that’s 9 net points the defense gave up.
Anyone mentioning the defense is a moron.
