Intriguing Bucs Captains Vote Coming Today

September 7th, 2026

It’s a work day at One Buc Palace today. The players have returned for the march to Cincinnati on Sunday.

Opening day!

One minor but interesting nugget on today’s docket is the Bucs are scheduled to vote for 2026 captains.

Todd Bowles is expected to announce the winners this afternoon.

Joe wants to see significant change in the captains. At least some guys who presided over last year’s meltdown/quit job/embarrassment should be replaced. If not, then Joe will perceive all the chatter and focus on wanting to add tough guys in the offseason to alter the culture to be little more than hot air (you know, the culture that was supposed to be legendary).

Lavonte David has retired and his captain spot will be taken. Vita Vea was a captain last season and asked to be traded. Should he be voted in again? Antoine Winfield is the third and final returning defensive captain.

Joe would love to see all the defensive captains replaced. How about Alex Anzalone, Calijah Kancey and Rueben Bain?

On offense, Mike Evans will be replaced, obviously, and Baker Mayfield and Tristan Wirfs return as captains.

For years, Todd Bowles has passed on having a special teams captain. (Perhaps he realized nobody was worthy?)

Captains are nearly meaningless at the end of the day. But some fans are into it and it certainly means a lot to the team. Joe would enjoy seeing the captain vote reflect how soft the Bucs defense was last year.

Mayfield, Wirfs, Godwin, Winfield, Vea, and Anzalone.

  2. Win in the trenchers Says:

    Much agreed!😎

Unfortunately the personality of the coach is reflected on the team

  3. Rastafarian-Jenkins Says:

VV should not be a captain after faking an injury and holding out like a sour baby over a $5m raise. Guy was a distraction all summer and didnt act like someone who should wear a C. Id say give Winfield, Yaya and Tykee it oj defense, maybe Anazalone if he’s calling the defense.

  4. Capebuc Says:

Joe, I love how you’re still so mad the Bucs couldn’t win just one down the stretch past year. Keep it up. Never forget.

  5. Todd Says:

Captain ballots should include just one question: “Where were you during the second half of last season?”

  6. Todd Says:

The good news is the captain patch weighs almost nothing, so it shouldn’t affect pursuit angles.

  7. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Much like I tell new divers when going out on a 30′ reef for the first time…..

    Relax, it’s not that deep.

Also, some people are waaaaaayyy into their feelings a bit to much about the Vita Vea situation.

  8. Ballwasher61 Says:

Meaningless vote and waste of time. There should be only 3 anyways if you’re gonna do it.

  9. AquaBum Says:

    Tykee

  10. Allen Lofton Says:

If someone is a natural leader and productive than why not make him a captain on the team.

  11. jimmy Says:

which is more meaningless, captain vote or preseason??

  12. Badbucs Says:

Captain CK in the tub. Right.

  13. ChiBuc Says:

Joe, I like your defensive Captain thoughts. But let’s put 2 rookies in there. Anzalone: the knowledgeable vet, Bain: the show you leader, and Trotter: the vocal leader

On offense: Mayfield and Wirfs are no brainers, both are capable of keeping the huddle light and loose, but the 3rd needs to be a glass eater Jensen type. I want to say Goedeke, but he’ll bump his head and be 4 games per usual, so I think putting a “C” on Bucky’s chest would go a long way to getting his head right and locked in. And tbh, Chase deserves a “C”

  14. Joe Bob Pigskin Says:

    Meh.
