Bucs Brass Reacts To Baker Mayfield’s New Deal

All parties ready for a drink.
If all goes well, you will not see a new Bucs starting quarterback until the next decade.
That’s because the Bucs and Mayfield agreed to terms today on a three-year deal for a reported $165 million, which lasts through the 2029 season.
“Baker’s arrival marked an important new chapter for our organization, and over the past three years he has established himself as the unquestioned leader of our franchise” said Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer. “This contract – the largest in the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – reflects our belief in Baker, and his leadership both on and off the field.
“His competitive spirit, resilience and commitment to winning embody everything we want in our players. Baker and his wife, Emily, have made a meaningful impact in the Tampa Bay community and we are thrilled their family will continue to call Tampa Bay home for years to come.”
Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht cited Mayfield’s “toughness” as an attribute he did not want to see walk out of One Buc Palace for good.
“From the moment Baker arrived, he brought a belief and competitive edge that has had a tremendous impact on our football team,” Licht said. “He has earned the respect of everyone in our building with the way he prepares, competes and holds himself accountable.
“His toughness and ability to deliver in big moments are a big part of what makes him special, but what really stands out is the leadership he brings every day. Baker is the heartbeat of this team, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have a quarterback and leader like him.”
KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles praised Mayfield’s ability to energize his teammates.
“Baker is the ultimate competitor, and the guys in our locker room feed off the energy, confidence and toughness he brings daily,” Bowles said. “He prepares the right way, holds himself accountable and is an unquestioned leader for our team.
“His belief in himself and this team never wavers, and he sets the tone for us every day. That is what you want from the person leading your football team, and we are excited to continue building with him as our quarterback.”
Now, in Joe’s eyes, the focus is on the defense. Joe isn’t worried about the offense. Mayfield is surrounded by plenty of talent and his near-future is now secure.
It’s time the Bucs get this defense playing up to higher standards.

Yup, either Yaya or Cody are gone next season. Cannot re-sign both. If Todd is still our coach then I’d see him letting Cody walk.
With that said, don’t hate this deal. Same money as Allen, Lawrence, etc. He earned it.

If it comes down to Cody vs Yaya then I’d prefer to keep Cody, respectfully don’t believe Yaya is gonna be worth the 20+ a year he’s gonna demand so I’d rather keep that to solidify the OL.

Baker isn’t good enough to win a Super Bowl with a mediocre team. Name a season he was the starter for a team that was much beyond mediocre but for one year with Cleveland and one with the Bucs. Name more than three current quarterbacks in the league currently who would have won with the teams Baker’s served as a starter.

This whole QB salary cap thing got me thinking, so I ran some quick analyses through Google Gemini.
In the modern salary cap period, since 1996, teams with QB salaries > 13% only had a 1.4% chance of winning the Superbowl. Teams with QB salaries <= 13% had a 3.4% chance. So that definitely supports the argument people are making.
HOWEVER, in the same period, high$-QB teams had about a 60% chance of making the playoffs, while low$-QB teams had only about a 40% chance.
Since winning the SB is such a low-likelihood event, in either case, I think it makes more sense to maximize one's odds of making the playoffs. That's only a personal preference, though, and folks could obviously disagree.

This is not a franchise quarterback contract the bucs will be drafting a quarterback this year or next. This is a 2 year deal with a 3rd year options so we have 2 years to get to a superbowl with Baker . No more excuses now I hope the chip everyone says he need to be a good quarterback is not gone. But he’s our quarterback for at least the next 2 years so we have to get behind him. I’m behind him 100 percent but I will not lie about how he plays on the field.

I love all the haters on here complaining about Baker and last season.
He was playing with a busted O-Line and his 3rd 4th & 5th WR’s and a new (horrible) OC and willed his team to wins in the first half while injured (trying to win) and a Defense that couldn’t hold a team to at least middle of the pack in points against. So of course Baker had to try and force the issue.
Only mistake was on the Glaziers for not firing Bowels and promoting Cohen who had Baker looking like an MVP.
Happy to have Baker and the QB situation taken care of.
Now defense DO YOUR JOB!!!!!!!

If Darnold can do it so can Baker.
If Coen was HC and we had a DC like McDermott or Schwartz, a healthy Bucs team would be the Rams biggest threat this year. As it stands, no one knows if Bowles can get 10 wins outta this roster.

It’s a 3 year extension he is signed for this year already. So it is at minimum 3 years of baker being here if the last year is not guaranteed. So yeah that’s franchise qb. No way in hell the Bucs draft qb high in the draft in the next two years if mayfield is healthy that was just a dumb take on this.

The Bucs can make all kinds of cap space so if they want to sign Cody and Yaya they will. Most importantly if the Bucs really wanted to go all in they could theoretically free up as much as $90M in cap space through restructuring this season which would allow them to make multiple trades at the deadline and soak up those salaries.

2-11 in primetime and playoff games.
2 mins left @DET in the playoffs, Bucs down a single score, all three timeouts. Baker, in the biggest moment of his career, with a chance to be a legend, goes out and promptly throws an INT on the 2nd play of the drive, ending the game.
Vs Redskins in the playoffs… The defense makes a huge 4th quarter goal line stand, gives the ball back to the offense with a chance to go up 2 scores and put the game away… and Baker promptly fumbles the ball, losing the game.
Last year, vs the Dolphins, one of the worst teams in football, with the playoffs on the line… the 4 game in a row where the playoffs are on the line… and Baker goes out and has probably the worst game of his Bucs career considering what was on the line. That made the Bucs 0-4, after his previous games had him passing for 122 yards, 145 yards, and turning the ball over multiple times in the 4th quarter of games, and missing simple 7 and 9 yard passes to wide open receivers with the game on the line.
Yeah, when I think clutch… I think Baker Mayfield. LOL!
Anywho, hopefully it works out and isn’t the worst deal in team history. We’ll see how it goes.
