Baker Mayfield Says 2023 Film Frustrates Him

The Buccaneers’ franchise quarterback has not only thrived in Tampa, he’s grown as a player.
That was the message from Baker Mayfield this week during his chat on The Rich Eisen Show (Joe listens via SiriusXM.)
Eisen asked Mayfield how advanced he is now in the nuances of quarterback play than he was as a rookie.
“Honestly, it’s frustrating to even see clips from even [of me] like three years ago,” Mayfield said.
“The game slows down. The more you see different coverages pressures, you know what checks you’re getting to, protections. And so it slows down; you kind of keep those things in the holster and you’re ready to communicate it and get the guys on the same page. So that’s the fun part about being able to play as much as I have — is the more reps you get, the slower the game feels. And as long you play on time and in rhythm, you know, let the physical abilities take over.”
Joe heard that and thought about undrafted No. 2 Bucs quarterback Jalon Daniels and his learning curve.
Regardless, the Bucs have a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback in his prime, a guy with two playoff wins. On paper, the Bucs should are capable of a very good season.

If baker stays healthy and cuts down on those 4th quarter turnovers this team can easily make it to the NFC Championship game….

The 2025 film frustrates me
Even with all of the injuries, we were a few plays from 12-5
And l think we are a much improved team this year
We have upgraded a lot of key positions
We have better depth than last season
That’s why I’m so optimistic about this season

That’s right Joe, on paper the Bucs look good. I can’t wait to see how they look on the field.
I think Baker is going to do everything in his power to lead this team to a great season. Thanks for pointing out that Baker is a two time Pro Bowler and two time playoff winner in addition to being a first round draft pick and Heisman Trophy winner.
I think the Buccaneers are blessed with a quarterback that has all the tools it takes to win a Championship !!

Has anyone bothered to ask him about why he was so God-awful when it mattered most last year? Just point to his passing lines… 122 yards, 145 yards, huge 4th quarter INTs – and not just INTs, really bad ones… Then the disater that was the Miami game.
I know Baker was very middling in 2023 already, but what I’m interested in is why he performed so poorly with the playoffs on the line. I mean, seriously, how can you not hit a wide open TE on 4th down vs the Saints, why is the ball at his feet? How do you miss a wide open WR with the game on the line vs the Saints when it’s a 7 yard pass that I can make? How do you completely collaspe in Miami? If it’s all health, when exactly did he feel better this offseason? Was it 48 hours after the last game, or 48 days, or is he still not healthy?
Would be a lot more interesting information than hearing about his checkdowns from 3-years ago.

I mean he’s been playing for about what 9 to 10 years in the NFL. This is when the game finally slows down. I figured the game would’ve slowed down after they traded you somewhere to either the Panthers or the Rams know the game finally slows down your third year with Tampa that doesn’t make any sense.

Baker was so beat up last year he couldn’t move. Still, the Bucs were just a few plays from a 12-5 season. They defeated the Super Bowl champions in their own stadium. They scored plenty of points offensively to beat the Patriots, the Bills, and the Eagles but the Bucs defense and special teams were absolutely the laughingstock of the NFL.
Let’s get real. Stop blaming Baker for last season’s slump. It takes more than just a quarterback to win games !!
Let’s hope our defense and special teams are significantly improved this season !!

Baker beat the Cinnanati Bengals as a Cleveland Brown Quarterback and will be playing them in their first regular season game. The Bengals are 3.5 point point favorite to win. Hard to say if he will win when he’s been on ice during the preseason. I remember watching him play very well in that game. It’s hard to predict the outcome because of all the changes in coaching and player personnel
Bucs offensive players along with Baker should be healthy. Baker is forecasting a Super Bowl run for 2026 and is betting on himself. The Bucs are playing at home and Baker is betting on coming out the winner. Guess I have to go with a motivated Baker to win their opening game but I’m not ready to call the Bucs Super Bowl bound off of one game when history has shown their bye week 🙃 history of losing too many games.

Agree with Munch. Let’s hear the truth about his health in those late season moments where he failed miserably when he would have succeeded during the 6-2 stretch.
Then maybe doubters would chalk it up to injuries.

Rod: I’d lobe to hear Baker’s answers to that, as well, but I think the default is pretty clear: he was sufficiently banged up that it seriously affected his play, especially his precision. The alternative seems to be that he inexplicably forgot how to throw a football, which makes no sense to me. Or that he was playing drunk or high…and we’d have heard about that by now.

I don’t mean to let Baker entirely off the hook: if his accuracy suffered because he was banged up, he was banged up parly because he put himself in harm’s way.
