Baker Mayfield Chip Removed

Time to list a few stupid things that were written and said often about Baker Mayfield and his motivation and Bucs contract negotiations over the past several months.
First, there was the nonsense that the Bucs didn’t want to pay Mayfield until after the 2026 season because they believed he would perform better when he feels disrespected. Mayfield is not a mental patient — and the Bucs showed him the money months ago. Just because Mayfield wanted more cash, that doesn’t mean the Bucs were trying to mess with his head.
Joe heard so many analysts ramble about how the instead of a “chip” on Mayfield’s shoulder, now there’s a “boulder” and the Bucs like that. Thank goodness that take died today.
A three-year Mayfield extension got done this afternoon because the Bucs were desperate to make it happen.
Second was the notion that Mayfield needs that chip on his shoulder and his back against a wall to play his best. That’s complete BS. If that were the case, his team wouldn’t have lost consecutive games last season to the Saints, Falcons, Panthers and Dolphins.
All four were loser teams and the Dolphins were tanking.
Lastly was the idea that the Bucs were in some form of soft tanking this year. That could have been true if one were to believe Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht is a buffoon or that Team Glazer hasn’t learned much from its 30 years of ownership.
The signing of quality veterans on defense in free agency was the first clue the Bucs were trying to win. Then Team Glazer swooped in a couple of weeks ago and, poof, the Bucs gave Vita Vea a raise for no good reason and a contract extension hours later.
Tampa Bay is playing to win and is not trying to play mind games with players.
Now one could argue the team played mind games with fans by retaining Todd Bowles, an unpopular coach coming off a horrific collapse. But that’s a discussion for another day.

This guy is a franchise quarterback and is our QB for the next few years. Couldn’t be any happier. Great for the community great for the team. Let’s stack up some wins and get a Super Bowl. Shut everybody up. Go Bucs!

Sadly there is no other option. Average team next 10 years maybe a playoff appearance now and then, possibly a win, thats the reality …….

I would not have signed him. Waited to ride his emotions and see how far he got us before making a decision. He went from a chip on his shoulder to possibly laying low like most that sign a big contract.

The Glazer’s retained Todd Bowles
And Bowles was the guy pushing for the players extensions
They made the right choice by extending Mayfield and Vita
Thiey were team captains and players they need to be successful
Mayfield was easily a Top 5-10 QB in 2024, Vita is a top 3-4 NT
The Bucs don’t have a quality replacement for either of them
Todd Bowles job is on the line, he need these 2 players
I think they did right by retaining Bowles, extending Mayfield and Vita
It’s time to bring the noise now

It’s great to have stability at the QB position.
With Baker at QB and Licht as GM, the Bucs will be competitive for awhile.
Just need to find a better coach after letting 2 walk out the door and stop this revolving door at OC.
(Yes I think Canales is a better coach, he was a first year play caller with us and he just led an inferior team to our division crown. I need no more evidence!)

doubt any chip is gone. theres enough people saying he is underserving of the numbers so its pretty much the way Baker loves it. team on board with him and him and the team against the haters.

Baker wanted the deal done so it wouldn’t be a distraction during Training Camp…he was not mad at all. He just didn’t want the distraction.
I’ve been saying that he wanted 4 years, with 2 guaranteed. I also predicted they would do a deal before the season started.
I also predicted $52m thru $55m per year.
At first though, I thought it best to wait as well. Then I thought it thru.
The people who claim the Bucs could have drafted a QB next year and been much better with 2 years…that’s just idiocy. It rarely works out that way with drafting QBs.
THAT’S the reality.

🔸95 pass TD (2nd)
🔸100 total TD (4th)
🔸11 games with 300+ pass yds (5th)
🔸30 games with 2+ pass TD (2nd)
Baker needs 26 TDs to tie for all-time TD’s by a Tampa QB. Likely happening this year.
He needs 11 wins to tie all time for Wins by Tampa QB. I believe this will happen this season.
He needs about 7k yards for that All time yds lead. So next season.

This must be WHY the haters wouldn’t take the bet on Baker a while back… down deep they know Baker is a great NFL qb but they won’t admit it. Apparently, all those that know talent know Baker IS OUR FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK and he is VERY talented.

This is not a franchise quarterback contract it’s a 2 year deal with 3rd year a optional. The bucs will draft a quarterback either this coming April or the next one. But as real bucs fan we have to get behind him and hope he plays well. But now no more excuses he has 3 years tops to get to the superbowl.

It is all very simple. Win a title, or be a vastly overpaid journeyman QB that had a few good years with the Bucs.
Up to you Baker… modern day Jeff Garcia with a larger investment account or remembered forever around here as an actual winning QB.

Mike B. That’s not a franchise quarterback contract because of his age. Now he has 3 years tops to get ti to a superbowl. That’s not a argument that’s just facts about his contract and every year he’s been here he’s been on a 5 to 6 game losing streak. That can’t happen anymore he’s going to be judged by the same standards as Dak , Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson they don’t get the injury excuses even if it’s the team around them. Dak just lost his all pro Tackle and Josh Allen played on a broken foot . Baker is now in that position no more excuses!!

One thing about me I’ve given Baker credit when he played good I was one of the ones who said he’ leading the mvp race the first half of the season.
