Benjamin Morrison Turns Around Rough Night With A Strong Play

Makes a (big) play!
For a few moments tonight, Joe had Chris Braswell dancing in his head.
No, Braswell was not in the game. He’s back in Tampa, hurt. He may be out of Tampa tomorrow night. The 2024 second-round pick has been as invisible as a second-day draft pick can be — unless he was facing the Bucs’ backup offensive line. Then he looked like a pro.
That sort of tells you the state of the Bucs’ backup offensive linemen.
Second-year cornerback Benjamin Morrison has been used more than he’s made a good play in his very brief career. Right now, Morrison is more known by Bucs fans for being a name on an injury report.
Morrison seems like a really good guy. Joe doesn’t think he wants to be hurt. But at some point, if you can’t get on the field, what’s the point?
Morrison played the entire first half against Jacksonville on Friday night. Initially, he looked rough. He got juked badly by a running back, giving up a first down. Got cooked a guy who will be teaching history at IMG next week. But then, when it looked like the Jags were about to go in for a score, Morrison saved a touchdown when he defended a pass in the end zone for an incompletion. Really good play.

(However, the Joe not typing here says Morrison got beat easily and was bailed out by the pass being behind the receiver.)
After the game, Bucs coach Todd Bowles spoke about Morrison’s play. It seems his rough play early may just be that he’s rustier than a 40-year old truck that was never parked in a garage.
It was good “just good to see him play a half,” Bowles said. “He hadn’t been out there [on a practice field].
“For him to come out there and play a half and on special teams shows that he is finally healthy.”
Even Bowles, Joe thought, was getting frustrated by Morrison always being hurt. At one point this summer during training camp, when asked about Morrison, Bowles grumbled, “The usual.” Meaning he was still unable to get on the field.
“Now he just has to get his timing down and get some reps in,” Bowles said.
Still, Joe doesn’t trust Morrison to be the Bucs’ CB3. That should go to Ayden Garnes. The rookie free agent from Arizona has shown he can handle himself on the field.

Garners has had an excellent preseason and training camp. We still need more depth, but thank goodness we have him.
Pyburn also had a really solid game/preseason. He’s definitely got Braswell beat for a roster spot.

A well-thrown ball and that was a TD.
Garnes should be ahead of Morrison on the depth chart.
Garnes is a baller.

Garnes Pyburn Fordham I think should definitely stay & I think they should keep Rivers & Patterson over somebody like Sills & Greene. Although if Baker is gone & if any of the backup OL have to come in & start for a bit they’re probably gonna be in trouble. THEIR BACKUPS COULDN’T EVEN SCORE ON THE JACKSONVILLE BACKUPS!

Not a good sign when even the clueless HC/DC realizes it’s a special day when you can play a half without being injured or feigning an injury.

Without seeing actual coaches tape you can never know how well a CB played because the camera always follows the ball.
All I know is they didn’t look his way a lot. And one time they did the qb Mullins held the ball and got sacked by Nelly.
Pulling for the kid. Interesting that Todd used the word “finally” before healthy.
He should be CB4 now because he needs to work his way back. But I am more than happy to give him the chance.

One final impression.
Ayden Garnes went undrafted and may have stolen CB3 while Morrison was rehabbing.
Nothing motivates recovery quite like watching some dude nobody drafted move into your office.

Thin at corner, didn’t see any O lineman even worth putting on the PS. Skule has been a bust, and the bloom is off Chukes rose. Klein is a total joke, never should’ve been brought back this season. They should all be replaced.

I thought Garnes and Morrison played well. They make serviceable backups. Assuming Morrison remains injury free. Of course as far as Morrison goes .. it’s a very small sample size. Should be interesting!

Why do I have flashbacks of SMB when I see Morrison. Good player, always injured, 2nd round picks? Funny how Buc fans want SMB back now.

Ben just needs to get and stay healthy. He’ll shake off the rust. Fun fact: he NEVER got beat deep in his college career while always drawing the opponent’s #1 WR.
I get the injury fatigue among fans, but a healthy Morrison is a different cat.

I’m definitely on your side about Morrison, Joe. They should have picked Parrish first and waited till the 5th round to get Morrison, while using the 4th on something better somewhere else. But we are all human, even though that’s a several million dollar mistake, in the long term. Let’s Go Bucs !!!!

With Dean gone there’s an empty place on the bench for Morrison.
