“You Default To The Better Quarterback”

May 6th, 2026

The NFL remains a quarterback-driven league, even after Sam Darnold won a Super Bowl.

Joe loves the revival of rushing offense in this decade, but teams — and assessing them — are still very much about their quarterbacks.

Former Panthers, Chiefs, Vikings and Giants guard Geoff Schwartz was breaking down the NFC South while co-hosting on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week. He feels good about the Bucs’ roster but doesn’t see it as much better than the rosters of the Falcons and Panthers.

“They’re just getting older, dude, at a lot of positions,” Schwartz said of Tampa Bay. “But their talent is certainly there. Right?

“Look at defensively, I like the Rueben Bain addition and the [Josiah] Trotter addition in the draft. Vita Vea is incredible but he’s getting up there in age. They added A’Shawn Robinson, who has been a good, quality player for most of his career. Obviously, some overhaul at linebacker. … The secondary at times can be good but I don’t know if it’s consistent there.”

Schwartz praised the Bucs offense but thinks the November and December edition of Baker Mayfield was more than just bad luck.

” I think Mayfield did start to show some of his age last year. He’s a guy that chronically sort of has little bumps and bruises with the style he plays,” Schwartz said.

Still, division advantage Bucs. “I think you default to the better quarterback,” Schwartz said, referring to Mayfield in comparison to Bryce Young.

For those wondering, Schwartz was drafted by the Panthers and still lives in the region, so he’s definitely paying attention to the Panthers.

The Joe typing here feels a lot like Schwartz does. Mayfield is the division’s best quarterback until someone proves otherwise, and that’s just about always good enough to make a team the favorite to win the division crown.

“The secondary at times can be good but I don’t know if it’s consistent there.”

Someone wake up Bowles from his Kit-Kat eating coma and show him this.

As far as our QB situation goes, Mayfield isn’t clutch and likely never will be.

NFC South = Burning sack of dog poo.

Perfect division for the brain trust of Baker > Bowles > Licht.

  2. OLDSCHOOL1976 Says:

What other positions is he saying we are old? DT and QB? I think he doesn’t know anything about the Bucs he’s just a stinking Panther homer.

  3. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Sam Darnold is a good quarterback imho. Just needs a solid line. Very similar to Baker and many good quarterbacks.

  4. Lakeland Says:

I’m a Bucs fan, been one forever

But I’m not gonna say Baker is the best QB in the NFC South
It’s easier said than done, so I’m not going there
These young QBs in the NFC can breakout at any time
Atlanta, New Orleans, Carolina added offensive weapons during the draft

    I’m not sleeping in them

  5. Stpetematt Says:

He had the Jets in his division.

And he’s nowhere near Baker. If he even starts.

  6. Kenton Smith Says:

BBBB. You’re tryin to tell us Tua is better than Baker. He’s 0-1 in the playoffs with a 62 passer rating. He’s never on the field because he’s got mush for brains. Kind of like you, BBBB. Wish you wouldn’t waste valuable space that real fans could constructively comment.

  7. Lakeland Says:

Baker Mayfield is the oldest starting QB in the NFC South
But that don’t necessarily makes him the best QB
These young QBs have loads of potential, they’re not bad QBs
We will know who’s the best come February

    Right now everything is speculation

  8. 813bucboi Says:

November and December edition of Baker Mayfield was more than just bad luck.

    BINGO!!!!!!

unfortunately, the NOV & DEC version of baker is who he is

    GO BUCS!!!!

  9. BigD Says:

I like Baker. But I’d trade him to the Steelers, before paying him 50mil a year.

  10. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Best QB in the NFC ain’t saying much.

    Mayfield-Shough-Tua/Penix-Young

It’s like debating what’s the best day for jury duty

  11. toopanca Says:

For $50M per year, you could upgrade the three interior offensive line positions to somewhere between the top five and top ten at each position. Behind those guys and Wirth and Goedeke, Tua at $2M per year night be fine.

Part of what makes Baker so valuable is his ability to survive in the situations he faced last year. But, that was surviving, not thriving.

With good protection, many lesser quarterbacks can thrive. And, with good protection, Baker’s stubborn determination can backfire when he refuses to just throw the ball away on a play that is going nowhere.

Brady with the Bucs lacked many of Baker’s qualities. Gut, Brady was great at taking the snap, assessing the situation, saying, “Oh, hell no – airmail!” as he zipped h the ball out of bounds.

  12. Paratrooper Buc Says:

Baker lacks consistency. I respect his heart but his brain needs to keep him from getting hurt trying to win a game in the first half of the season. He gets banged up and when he really needs to shine he is too hurt. Even not hurt he can be inconsistent and that will hurt his contract length and money. He has the most experience and the least excuses to be the “best” qb compared to the sad nfc south.

  13. Bee Says:

    813

    You know ball.

I said it during the 2-7 slide and I said it after the season. The Baker we saw during those games are who he is. The table was set for him to be the hero. All he had to do is win one more game against backup QBs to make the playoffs, but he couldn’t do it. Other teams made the playoffs with worse OLs and worse defenses, in harder divisions.

He won’t be able to hide this year. He’ll have to get results or even the media narrative will start changing. All these articles about a pending contract sound like agent talk to put public pressure on the Bucs.

When he plays the exact same way this season don’t be surprised.

  14. 3.28.Evans Says:

    Yeah.
    No.

  15. 3.28.Evans Says:

He’s good enough to go 2-7 down the stretch and gag like a fat 99 trying to swallow the whole hog

  16. Rayjay1122 Says:

Last season, I had much excitement and such a positive outlook. I will not be duped again. The Bucs suck until they prove otherwise.

  17. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Brady was great at taking the snap, assessing the situation, saying, “Oh, hell no – airmail!” as he zipped h the ball out of bounds.”

Gronk was just on Lenny & Jarvis’ podcast talking about how much of a stickler Brady was for precision and make the best throw on every rep he got. Also dropped a tidbit about Brady keeping his skill players after practice to throw routes at them. Gronk was the first to point out, if you didn’t catch a majority of passes in that post-practicing segment, it was likely Tom wouldn’t throw you the ball on Gameday. Lenny let it be known, that there were time Brady would tell him he wasn’t getting a ball passed to him at all or they’d go off res and improvise in the game and Lenny or other players would take the heat from BA for doing so lol

Like, I get these guys played the same position, in the same league, with some of the same players and for the same franchises, but they play the game to totally different and as we all know, Tom put massive amounts of work in over his career to be the player he became. Idk if anybody can say the same about Midfield

  18. Attaboy Says:

Bbbb is definitely Rod Munch, no doubt about it. Who else would say such ridiculous junk and waste everybody’s time. The hate runs deep with that one.

  19. Stpetematt Says:

Also Kenton whenever someone says “I’m not trolling” that’s *exactly* what they are doing. Let’s stop feeding the trolls. EE had a great draft and things are looking even more up than usual so trolls will show up all over the place. They getting desperate since they know we are going to trounce their teams.

  20. Stpetematt Says:

    *We, not EE.

  21. Well well well Says:

Baker Mayfield: 3-4 year $150-$200 million contract coming up. Just workin out the details…
    Get used to it haters?

  22. Stpetematt Says:

We’ve had major devastating injuries both of the past 2 years. Almost entire position groups were out. We’re due now and we are going to win a LOT of games this year. You can smell the troll desperation in here. Our offense is loaded with weapons, has a great qb, and our defense is going to shred these lesser teams this year. I wanna see us win some games by 30 or more this year.

NEVER take your foot off the gas.

    All gas, no brakes.

And no mercy to the rest of this division!

  23. What it is Says:

Coaches and owners know talent and they know Baker is more than talented enough to take us to a superbowl. And that’s good enough for them. It’s exactly why the Glazers came out and said it won’t bother them one bit to cut a big fat check to Baker. Heck, when you beat the team that won the superbowl, uhh yeah, you can take us there. Just have to get a defense and we will be there. I agree well well well, it will be $50 million a year.

You truly are a clown. Get out of your room watching cartoons all day and get some fresh air loser boy!

  25. LynchMob50 Says:

    @3.28.Evans

Keep telling the Pom Pom squad the reality that they can’t handle.

Bowles and Baker will never see the SB as HC\DC and QB of the Bucs.

No matter how much propaganda and blind faith they choose to spread.

Our only issue is we believe what our eyes and brain tell us is real.

  26. ScottyMack Says:

I heard Schwartz’ comments today and thought he was a moron. The Bucs, if anything, are too young at the majority of their positions. Who, exactly, is the old person on the offense?

Other than a one year rental or two that may or may not even start, who are the old men on defense other than Vita Vea?

As far as Baker’s decline the second half of last season being due to him aging, all I can say is “asinine”!

  27. White Tiger Says:

Hahaha! All the board accountants can’t fathom the market for Baker Mayfield may just be $50 million.

I just appreciate what Baker Mayfield has already shown he can do with one Sean McVay style OC in Liam Coen and look forward to what he might be able to accomplish with another Sean McVay style OC in Zak Robinson. The contract will take care of itself.

The team knows Baker’s value, Baker understands the offensive weapons that the team has invested in around him.

Both sides want a deal, they’ll be happy with what comes of it.

  28. #99 The Big Fella Says:

    3.28.Evans , LynchMob50
You two pencil dicks will act like you never had anything bad to say when the Bucs are winning again. Don’t you two have to finish up hanging your rainbow ? posters up?

  29. ScottyMack Says:

Tua was in a tougher division? His entire tenure as a starter, that division had one and only one decent team – the Bills – and he lost to them every single time he played them except for last year when De’Von Achane and the Dolphins defense took the Bills down (Tua was 15/2 for 173 yards with two TDs and two INTs and a QB rating of 88.1.

The Pats and the Jets were even worse teams than any team in the NFC South, again, until last year – the year Tua was benched – when the Pats took advantage of the easiest schedule in the NFL including cruising through weakened teams throughout the playoffs.

  30. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“I just appreciate what Baker Mayfield has already shown he can do with one Sean McVay style OC in Liam Coen”

Have a dynamic run game and throw a bunch of short-intermediate routes to pad the passing yards with YAC lol

Some of y’all gotta start looking into how all this stuff comes together, tasting the Mac n cheese isn’t the same as baking the Mac n cheese.

  31. ScottyMack Says:

Man, I bet all these Baker haters are super upset to find out that Bucs and Falcons reject, Kyle Trask, has just been invited to try out with the Saints.

  32. David Says:

I bashed the fact that they kept Todd Bowles as much as the next guy, but we’re through the draft and free agency.
Can we give the nonstop biotching about the Coach a rest already?????
The ship sailed. He’s not getting fired.

So get on board, root for your team and LFG!

  33. #99 The Big Fella Says:

Well said David!! I’m tired of all the Bowles sh*t talking myself

  34. Kenton Smith Says:

Baker has only played 8 seasons. Just because he’s top ten in the history of the game in number of TD passes in their first 8 seasons- he and Brady tied with 197, Brees way behind them, doesn’t make him a good QB. And just because in their first 8 years in the league Baker Mayfield has Tom Brady and Drew Brees sniffing Baker’s jock strap- yes, Baker way ahead of those 2 his first 8 years in passing yards. Things like that are concrete. You can’t take that away from him. And he’s still a hungry dog. Those things don’t make him a good NFL Quarterback. That rarified air makes him a great NFL Quarterback. The sky is the limit for that man. And I ain’t whistling Dixie. And idiots around here gonna compare him to the other NFC South QBs. Yeah, right.

  35. Gipper Says:

Munch is allowing his alter ego, BBBB, to be the Baker hit man these days. Neither of these jamokes know much about Baker. The guy did what Brady would never would have done and that is play behind a javee O line for the last half of 2025. At times Wirfs and both starting guards were out with injuries. Baker toughed it out with injuries and still finished 26 TD 11INT. Of those INT’s at least 2 were because receivers broke of routes and stopped running. Two more were just taken from Cade Otton. The Baker haters ought to watch Mayfield 2025 highlights to see pinpoint passing before his injuries. Really weird that middle aged men are vitriolic in their hatred for a tough 31 year old QB.

  36. #99 The Big Fella Says:

    Jack , Kenton Smith, Gipper
Finally people with a Brain ,glad to see logical posts..These idiots sound so stupid bashing Baker all the time .

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

A lot of people here are in for a surprise this year. Uninjured Baker is better than 26 of the QBs in the NFC.

This team is about to explode

  38. Fanofdabucs Says:

Lots of kids/clowns in here. Guessing most are all the same sad person.

    Anyway, back to the article.

Assuming most of their draft picks make the team, the Bucs roster will be below league average age. Young players in Tykee, Parrish, Morrison, Trotter, Bain, Scott, Walker, Chukwuma, Hurst, EE, Tez, Barton, Mauch, Bucky, Tucker, Durham, Culp and youngish players in Luke, Kancey, YaYa, SVD, AWjr, Zyon.

There’s nothing “old” about this roster.

  39. Fanofdabucs Says:

Not to make excuses for Baker because I think he needs to play more consistently, but the Bucs NEVER had their starting 5 OL play a single game together in 2025. Injuries to Evans and Godwin didn’t help that Baker was throwing to 2 rookies in some games. Throw in a OC who wasn’t very good and Baker himself playing hurt..well makes things a little tough.

But the haters don’t see those facts.

Sure every QB deals with injuries, but last year was ridiculous with the amount of injuries.

With a healthy oline, better depth, more time with the young WRs, a better run game with Bucky/Gainwell and an upgrade at OC..Baker should have a really good season.

  40. Oscar Says:

Cumulative winning percentage for Miami Dolphins opponents between 2023-2025 was .508. For the Bucs opponents it was .498. Dolphins cumulative record in that time period was 26-25 and the Bucs 27-24. Negligible difference in strength of schedule played with the Dolphins having the slightly tougher schedule. Roster wise the Dolphins had 14 pro bowlers in that period and the Bucs had 6, so looks like the Dolphins had the better roster. I’m also pretty sure the Baker/ Bowles haters would probably acknowledge McDaniel as the better coach.

  41. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

Im in the middle on Baker. Not sure I would rush to extend him. Good stretches and not so good throughout his career. I’d let it play out this year and potentially look to the draft if there isn’t consistently good play with a sprinkle of great here and there.

With that, I’m pulling for him and hope he grabs the MVP and SB MVP.

  42. Saskbucs Says:

Baker just loses his accuracy trying to play hurt. Certainly a problem. No sugar coating the end of his season. He sucked.

He is still easily the best QB in the division. The guy had a weak OC last year, his 8th in 8 years! Do you guys understand how brutal that is!? His OL was shifting all season long with terrible guard play by the end.

I think we can give Baker a 8 game pass when our HC/DC has gotten a 2 season pass.

  43. Okiejim Says:

The HATERS will always hate and like the true HATERS they are, will never be swayed to say let’s see what this season produces before we conclude it’s all over! The HATE is so dense that even a Super Bowl win would not dilute the amount of HATE toward Baker! Give it a rest and let the wins and loses fall where they may.

  44. ScottyMack Says:

“The Pats got 3 last post season alone”

    The year Tua got benched.

From 2021 through 2024 (the years Tua was the Dolphins starting QB all season), the AFC East sent exactly one team to the playoffs – the Bills.) The lone exception was 2023 when Tua’s Fins got slaughtered by the Chiefs in the wildcard round, 26-7. Tua was 20/39 for 199 yards with 1 TD, 1 INT and a QB rating of 63.9.

  45. ScottyMack Says:

“Not to make excuses for Baker because I think he needs to play more consistently, but the Bucs NEVER had their starting 5 OL play a single game together in 2025.”

Actually, they never even had four starting offensive linemen play an entire game the 2025 season at their proper positions.

  46. ScottyMack Says:

I’ve challenged the Baker bashers here more times than I can count to name ten starting QBs in the NFL who are better than Baker Mayfield. Still not a peep.

Could he be better? Heck yeah! Replacing him with something better will be a whole lot harder than the bashers think and as Seattle proved last year, you can win a Superbowl with a middle of the road QB.

There’s a whole lot way more wrong with the Bucs than the QB. Ask the Bills, Ravens, Chargers, Bengals and Cowboys what a superstar QB has gotten them.

  47. ScottyMack Says:

“The guy had a weak OC last year, his 8th in 8 years!”

And this year, he will have his 9th in 9 seasons.

  48. Obvious Says:

It’s amazing to me that none of these experts that watch more football than I do can’t see the obvious: the team takes on the personality of the HC…plain and simple.

If canales can get his team to buy in more than last season, then maybe they’ll get to 9 wins, maybe not.

The saints….the book is out on Mr Moore….maybe they can get to 8.

The falcons….thats the wild card because he’s never coached that team but he’s done more with less…see Flacco.

Us….we will bottom out at 7 and top out at 9. That’s our head coach. And we do have the better roster.

  49. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Baker is good enough to win with. Sam Darnold whom Baker beat last season in Seattle just won the Super Bowl. The Baker trolls on this website are either fans of other teams or just stupid.

BTW, looks like Trask To The Stupid has rebranded.

  51. Well well well Says:

Old WBL sticking true to his form saying Baker throws short to intermediate passes for the purpose of padding his numbers. But the reality is, when Brady was here 3 years his average pass was 7.1 while Bakers 3 years here is 7.3. As I said normal bs. You can’t believe anything WBL says. If it’s the truth he takes it totally out of context and for the rest it’s just not the truth. Busted yet again. Try telling the truth for once WBL. It always catches up with you when you do it as much as you do it…?

  52. Well well well Says:

Mahomes’ last 3 years is 6.9. How interesting, strike 2. So I guess Mahomes is padding his stats even worse, right WBL??

  53. Well well well Says:

Joe Burrows last 3 years 6.9. Strike 3 and you are out WBL.
As has been said a million times to you haters, what you people claim is Baker only is actually what all qb’s go through but you never learn because you don’t want the truth. You want what you talk about to be the truth but it rarely is. In this case with WBL as we can see it just isn’t…

  54. BillyBucco Says:

You guys are exhausting which is good because I need sleep.

  55. Stpetematt Says:

Man every troll and sock puppet is in this thread. The Bucs will win a ton of games this year and perform well in the playoffs barring major injuries to several players in the same position group again. Baker is a phenomenal quarterback and perfectly capable of winning a Super Bowl. Now he’s got a quite better team around him and I look forward to great, positive results. Baker, Bowles and Licht’s haters are short sighted and don’t understand the very real reasons we couldn’t compete last year late in the season. Both starting guards were out and so were their backups. Simple.

  56. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Old WBL sticking true to his form saying Baker throws short to intermediate passes for the purpose of padding his numbers.”

“Baker Mayfield had the best season of his career, setting career marks in completions (407), attempts (570), completion rate (71.4%), yards (4,500), and touchdowns (41).

He also ran for a career-high 378 yards with 3 touchdowns.

His 49.4% success rate and 0.17 EPA per dropback were the best of his career.

In his first (and only) season with Liam Coen, there was a more significant emphasis on the short passing game.

After averaging 8.6 air yards per throw in 2023 under Dave Canales, Mayfield averaged 7.0 air yards per pass last season.

His average time to throw was 2.62 seconds from the snap, his fastest since his rookie season.

That area is where there was a divide with Mayfield as a passer this year.

When he threw the ball within 2.5 seconds from the snap, Mayfield completed 77.8% of his passes with 27 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

When he held the ball longer than that, he completed 63% of his passes with 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.”

-Warren Sharp on Baker Mayfields’ 2024 season or the best season if his career

    Well, well, well,

Long handoffs padded his stats, that’s why Grizzard sounded like a fool talking about his offense being “more vertical” because talk about asking guys to do things they aren’t consistently good at doing.

If you want, I can link you to every passing chart Joe posted here on this very website to prove my point or quotes from Joe himself, that are pretty funny:

“Joe hasn’t seen a passing chart this nauseating since Joe saw Reggie Ball play quarterback at Georgia Tech.”

“However, the Liam Coen dink-and-dunk offense is still very much in effect for the Bucs, even though Josh Grizzard is calling the plays and Coen is in Jacksonville.”

“This is sort of a Barry Bonds batting average.

In the loss to the Eagles, Baker Mayfield threw past the Liam Coen Line just six times.” The Liam Coen line is anything further than 20 yards

“It may just be a one-off thing, but it appeared Mayfield struggled more over the middle than in any other area of the field against the Patriots.”

Even the Seattle game, Baker throw 13 of his 29 completions behind the LOS.

Well, well, well, you stink at this. Learn more ball, man

  57. Well well well Says:

WBL, very few read your long winded posts because you can’t tell it factual. Type away but no one can believe anything you say. You say Baker throws short passes only to improve his stats but Mahomes and Brady have thrown for less yards per throw than Baker. Your posts are very misleading. But I am sure they are meant that way… such is the hater

  58. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“You say Baker throws short passes only to improve his stats but Mahomes and Brady”

Brady & Mahomes are champions, multiple time MVPS and already have places in Canton.

Baker has you, Kenton, Gipper, and all the get along go along gang that thinks just because he plays the same position as great players, he plays the game comparable to those great players.

You aim high, when you really should be aiming at Blake Bortles, Doug Flutie, & Kevin Kolb.

Please advise when that will start taking place? Post Todd Bowles is my guess.

10-7 was the high water mark with an OC that should have been immediately given the HC job.

Instead we stuck with Bowels and it will be a minimum of two calendar years before we see another playoff game.

We have been a .500 football team since clueless Todd took over.

But you keep those Pom Poms waiving. It really is working!!!

  60. Well well well Says:

WBL-wannabe aloser, as usual, you leave out the truthful part, you can’t ever get the facts straight. Just keep spinning it, that is what you are good at, at least to the dummies that know no different. And by the way, Baker has just a few more fans than the 3 you named. But hey, why would you start with the truth this last in the game? In fact, everybody that can judge real talent, which leaves you haters out, loves Baker. We know he can lead us to the superbowl. It’s just a matter of getting the team right. Like it is with every team that makes it there. But what would you know about that, absolutely nothing, obviously. 3 year $150 million. Brace yourselves, all 3 of you loudmouth haters that never played a sport in your entire life. So obvious?

  61. Gipper Says:

    BBBB,

Go take your lithium. Your manic posts focusing on Baker are really weird. Certain that medication will help.

  62. LichtBowlesSecondary Says:

Someone has serious OCD on here. Give it up. No matter how much you type, some of us are going to support our quarterback. Like it or not, he’s one of the best talents in the position we’ve had in franchise history. You Baker haters act like we’ve had a bunch of great quarterbacks in our history. That’s just not the case. Even if you won’t support him, just shut up.

  63. Well well well Says:

BBBB, this is how I know you have zero reasoning and logic abilities. You act like because Maye doing what he did and by Baker not equalling it, it makes Baker a bad qb. You can’t look at the situation and “realize” Baker went to the worst football organization to probably ever exist in the professional game. Their record was 1-41 before Baker showed up. You just don’t have the mental capacity to look at a situation and see the whole picture. That Maye had one of the best coaches and THE best organization football has ever had. It is amazing that you can’t see that but you obviously can’t. Basically you said Cleveland and New England are equal in all things football. And because you lack this ability you will never see reality. That one is a rock bottom football organization while the other is the pinnacle. You won’t even understand the point I am making. There is no hope that you will ever understand the semi-complex issues that are discussed on this blog because you can’t understand simple issues like, an organizations history of accomplishments vs. failures. Cleveland is failure while New England is the pinnacle of accomplishment. I’m not even going to ask if you get it because I know you don’t. I wouldn’t doubt if this isn’t the problem with all 5 of you haters. You fail to understand the most simple ideas and lump all issues into one category thus never able to solve anything. Chaos just follows you around. Cleveland vs. New England ?
Organizations and coaches make ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD if you haven’t figured that one out yet.

  64. Well well well Says:

As usual bbbb misses the point. Why figure it out now.. ?
