Whaddya know, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy reacted to the big March free agency news the way most Bucs fans did.
And Joe is not referring to Tampa Bay signing linebacker Alex Anzalone.
Purdy addressed 49ers media as the team reported back to work this week, just like the Bucs did. He was asked about his reaction to learning the 49ers signed Bucs legend Mike Evans.
Purdy set the scene.
He said he was working out in George Kittle’s gym where an Evans jersey hangs on the wall. The Evans news found its way through the room “I was like, you gotta be kidding me,” Purdy said. “Alright, sick. I get to throw to this guy, a big old receiver. … It’s an honor. I can’t wait to go to war with that guy.”
In fact, most questions for Purdy were about the greatest receiver in Bucs history.
Purdy added that he’s been watching clips of Baker Mayfield and Tom Brady throwing to Evans in the red zone, and how well Evans secures leverage and runs routes. He called it a “dream” situation for a quarterback.
Purdy acknowledged throwing to top receivers in the past but they weren’t Evans. “He’s just different,” he said, before praising how well Kittle recruited Evans and had a plan to pursue him.

The 2nd & Long special under BA was something to see.
Tom had every QB in practice throwing into buckets at varying depths to hone their touch & accuracy.
Mike was the most targeted, but I remember Scooter getting in on that too. It was just more likely would run by his guy rather than the guy running with him.

If he really wants to see what Evans can do, just go watch the game vs the Falcons where Evans was wide open all night, yet still had to make some amazing catches since Baker couldn’t barely get it in the same zip code of Mike.
When Brock watches that game film, he’ll know that he can suck worse than he’s ever sucked in his entire life, and Evans can still get over 100 yards and a TD out of it.

No plan to follow Evans. I am a Bucs fan first so Evans is dead to me. I don’t care what he does and hope Baker gets an even bigger chip on his shoulder the way Evans disrespected him. BTW, Evans will be lucky to play 9 games with his annual hammy injury problems.

I just remember that game Evans was out Ann we were first and goal and had 9 chances to get into the end zone and how well that worked out. Trying to thrown jump balls to small receivers thinking they could do what Evans does. For all the people thinking we’re better without Evans go back and watch that set of downs…. Now you have no one with that mismatch. With Evans in the red zone there is no DB in the league that could stop him 1 on 1.

People don’t realize how huge of a hole this left in our roster.
We have no WR1/X receiver more, and nobody currently on our roster can be a true WR1.
Idk if we can win without a true WR1.
We haven’t shown yet that we can, that’s for sure.

Doughboy. The 49’ers weren’t going to give up draft capital for Mike. They aren’t paying him squat guaranteed money for an x receiver. That being said, they may have gotten the steal of the offseason. Because Mike Evans can play him some catch. But if Baker Mayfield hasn’t been “all business” since he walked into OBP, he will be this year. Because that was an awfully disrespectful move Mike pulled on Baker. But Mike didn’t just eff Baker. He effed JL. He effed TB. He effed the City of Tampa. Soon we’ll find out if he managed to eff himself.

Maybe somewhere deep in the back of Evans’ mind was the following thought ; What if the Bucs screw up and somehow Baker gets away this year. Will Baker risk injury and possible career changing events on his last year ? Sean Sullivan said on the podcast he had them at 6 wins for now. Will Baker be happy if he thinks every game will have to be a shoot out ? I don’t blame Mike for leaving at all. It’s just as much about business for Mike as it is for the owners. Remember when it went down to the last minute for Bowles to get Mike his thousand yards. Then coming back after a bad injury and playing his heart out he gets 3rd and 28 ? I see no reason for Baker to feel confident or even trusting. All Baker has to do is hint about wanting out. That’s a nightmare situation. If the Bucs play great this year Baker’s value goes up and he’ll get offers. If the Bucs defense plays poorly (optimism anyone?) regardless of Baker’s play his value goes down and he could be looking at backup roles. How much does he believe in Zac ? Unless Zac performs miracles will the owners hire him as HC or tear it down and rebuild. Does anyone believe, even with an infusion of talent (rookies), that Bowles and his staff will suddenly dramatically improve ?
One more thing, Baker lost Mike Evans.

Imagine putting the personnel on defense we had for out last Super Bowl win right now all on our defense- we’ve got Lavonte and White, Barrett still in his prime, JPP, etc etc. all at their ages and skill level they were back then. Now stop and be honest with yourself- how excited about having an awesome defense would you be this year? Would you expect the same or similar performance level from them? I would.
This means the issues are with the personnel, NOT THE COACH!!! No matter how much people like to pretend otherwise, Bowles is very knowledgeable and fielded an incredible defense in that Sper Bowl and outsmarted Andy Reid by blitzing minimally and using 3 safety looks.

Don’t understand why people can’t see this as win win. Mike gets one of the best OCs in the NFL and we are not paying 20-25 million while we rebuild. As I said I want all the best for him and hope he stays healthy but odds and Father Time are against him. Let’s see how it plays out before passing judgement and again any personal attacks or ill will towards Mike is just sad. He was the best of the best Pro while he was here and we were lucky he was a Buc

The think l love about the San Francisco 49ers
They are not stuck on one position like Edge Rusher
Last year they only had 20 sacks as a team, but they made the playoffs
They had a lot of injuries, more than the Bucs
But they always found a way to grind out wins

I understand the hatred towards Mike Evans. I felt it hard core right after he left. Then I imagined having only a few years left in a career and watching Licht refuse to make trades to get something going last year, watching Bowles sh!t the bed repeatedly and again being handed the keys to the team. I thought about how bad it must’ve been during the lost decade. Then I realized I would’ve done the exact same thing. You’ve got to think that our anger about the cluelessness of the front office would be 10 times as bad for him.

Rod Munch. “No”. “You’re welcome”. Funny stuff. Last 6 games of the year, Rod. You are fond of saying our offense was 28th in the league in offense and 10th in the league on defense in those 6 games. Yes, we only scored 121 points in those 6 games. And we only allowed 127 points in those games. So any idiot knows 2 of those games in rainstorms helps the defense 10 points a game and hurts the offense 10 points a game. Our team wasn’t good enough to make the playoffs. Starting with the defense. We will find out what the team thinks the culprit was the next 3 days. That top 10 ranking our defense rolled out those last 6 weeks was a mirage- and anyone looking closely at it knows it.

Purdy was 4th in MVP voting his second year in the NFL. First year led his team to the NFC title game, year#2 SB. His first and only 4 years in the NFL he finished 7th (had he played enough to qualify),4th,14th and last year tied for 2nd in completion %. Baker finished 25th or LOWER in competition % 6/8 times,3rd and 19th. And before you guys start with the look at the system crap, why didn’t Trey Lance do it? Why did the Purdy era offense perform much better then the Garapolo era offense ? Don’t forget Garapolo also led them to a SB and a NFC title game.. FUN FACT: Garapolo in 2022 led them to a 8-4 start and the offense averaged 23.5 PPG. Purdy came in as a 7th Rd rookie and they went 5-0 and averaged 33.6 PPG. Purdy is 30-15 since 2022- when he came in the league . Bum Baker is 29-32 since then. That’s excluding the playoffs where Purdy is like 6-3. Baker is 1-2. So define BETTER lol

That gets thrown out because from a 3 year span Geno Smith was a top 6-8 QB ” on paper”.Jared Goff is only 6 months older then Baker and he is #1 the LAST 4 years with a much higher win % along with a NFC title game and another 15-2 season under his belt. Goff is actually top 3 in yards and TDS the last 10 years…..since 2016. And has a record of 90-60-1 vs Baker’s 58-62 lol. Goff has 32 more wins and 2 less losses. Peyton Manning had a career completion percentage of 65.3. Tom Brady career completion 64.3. John Elway career completion rate 56.9. Joe Montana career completion rate of 63.2. Troy Aikman career completion rate of 61.5. Baker Mayfield career completion rate of 63.5. And BBBB. Purdy has missed so many games compared to those 6 QBS he hasn’t reached the minimum amount of tosses to qualify to be mentioned in the same breath with these truly elite QBs. Go bark up another tree and act like you’ve got good sense. It’ll be tough for you, granted.

Kenton Smith – The offense averaged 20.1 points per game over that span, which is inflated by the fact the Dolphins went to a prevent and let the the Bucs score a garbage time TD – so the real average is 19 points per game. But still, give them 20.1 points per game – the league average over that same period of time was 23 points per game, so the Bucs were nearly 3 points per game worse than average – or 4 points per game if you remove the garbage time score.
At the same time, the defense gave up 21.1 points per game vs the league average of of 23 points per game, meaning the defense was nearly 2 points per game better than average over that same span.
Again, one side did it’s job over that span – one side didn’t.
The defense was an issue over the course of the full year, and they stunk in the Falcons game – but it wasn’t the defense that cost the Bucs those 4 games in a row. Every single one of those loses you can point to HUGE negative plays by Baker in key situations that directly caused each loss. Even the Falcons game – a game where we knew going the defense was going to get lit up – all Baker had to do was not throw THE worst INT I’ve ever seen in my life and the Bucs win. Even worse than that was on the final Bucs drive, all Baker had to do was complete a pass I could literally throw, and the Bucs run out the clock and win the game.
Baker was terrible over that 4-game losing streak – and if you go back before that span, I actually had faith in Baker to bounce back from his midseason funk, I literally put money on him (actual cash) only to have him fall flat on his face. Baker HAS to play much better this season or the Bucs aren’t winning – everyone is getting fired and Baker almost certainly won’t be back. If you think he can play like he did from week 7 on last year and still stick around, it’s just nonsense.

Rod,he’s gone. 2025 was his 4th or 5th BEST season of his career..Even 2024 was overrated that’s why we were only 10-7. If Goff or Dak had that exact season,went 10-7 and fumbled the ball away late in a wild card loss they would get CRUCIFIED and fans would clamor for them to get axed. Not Baker tho.

Even his fluke/ outlet year his team was 10-7 and didn’t clinch this crappy division until the last game of the season. Again…It was low impact empty calories which is why he finished 11th in MVP votes -8th among QBs. I know the defense…..like I said,the Commanders gave up more points then us and went to the title game-with their defense giving up over 35 PPG in the playoffs.After a 12-5 season with a rookie QB in the same division as the SB champ Eagles.

Rod…offense was running for 160,180 yards and Baker would be like 14/28 for 122 yards and a pick and the opposing offense start in FG range and the talk was all about the defense sucking lol. Second half of the year insane games the defense have up 260 yards and 275 yards and we still lost all while running for 160-180 yards. Then you’d see Baker had games like he had the majority of the 2023 season when our offense was ranked 23rd under Canales. 2/3 years our offense has been ranked in the 20s…… coincidence I guess.

Mike C. Why do you guys call everything hate when people are telling the truth about Baker Mayfield or any other player on the team y’all like? Saying that Baker Mayfield has choked in every big game is not hating it’s the truth. I don’t think that bucs fans wants to see Baker Mayfield fail. I’ve given him his credit when he’s played good and fact I was one of the ones who saying he was leading the MVP the first half of the season. I even gave him a pass for throwing a pick in the red zone that lost the game against the eagles because he started off so good and I don’t expect him or any player to play good every game. But we have to stop with excuses for him that we don’t give to other players.

Including, being moved at the trade-deadline, by a Bucs Franchise that is “SELLING” (and heading towards a complete rebuild) during the midst of a BAD season. It is a business and ppl are too emotional. Todd seems like a nice guy and Baker seems quiet cool. Just because I think, well KNOW neither one of them will take you anywhere meaningful is not a indictment of them as ppl, just in their professions as it relates to the team in root for. While it’s not set in stone the next HC+QB will have better results, you have to try at least. The next duo might come in and the division stiffens up and becomes tough again and turn into the 2010s version of the division,littered with SB teams and MVP/HOF QBs. One way to avoid a losing decade is to be proactive..I still can’t believe you all took Baker side over Mike Evans. I still cannot believe that.. #13 Good in my book..Just wanted better QB to close out his career- he’s like the 3rd or 4th receiver/offensive player/ offensive player dad or spouse to go public about Mayfeild / the offense. I think we will hear more about a potential rift between Mike and Mayfield as time goes on. 6 weeks after Mike left and silence is pretty damning. Hey we had Brady for 3 years,2 of them were great.
