Does Todd Bowles Have Time To Develop An Edge Rusher?

April 20th, 2026

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Here is a hidden reason why “this Joe” would refrain from drafting an edge rusher at No. 15.

Well, the obvious reason for “this Joe” is that when Bucs coach Todd Bowles drafts and develops his next double-digit sackmeister as a defensive coordinator or head coach, it will be his first.

That’s 13 years through three organizations. Call Joe weird, but Joe does not like high-stakes gambling against never (Joe doesn’t even like low-stakes gambling against never).

Wanna pick an edge rusher after the first round, knock yourself out. The pain, if the guy doesn’t break out, is less damaging.

Several rookies in the past decade or so broke out as pass rushers. Beforehand, this was not the case.

Joe doesn’t know if that’s a temporary trend or if colleges have guys ready to battle grown arse men better coming out of college than previously.

Kevin Patra of NFL.com believes if Bowles really does know how to develop an edge rusher, the time is now.

The Bucs have swung and missed on improving their edge rush over the past few offseasons. Getting it right this time around is paramount for Todd Bowles’ crew, which struggled to get after the passer without sending extra men in 2025. Signing veteran Al-Quadin Muhammad was a short-term rotational solution. Tampa needs a heat-seeking missile off the edge to transform the D.

So here is the hidden reason Joe is hesitant to put so much faith, money and effort behind Bowles breaking from his entrenched cycle with rookie edge rushers: Does he have the time?

Bowles just suffered his first losing season that included missing the playoffs. Since Team Glazer bought the Bucs in the mid-1990s, the only coach who survived two straight  losing seasons was the same guy who got Team Glazer its first Super Bowl. That would be Chucky.

Every coach since had his One Buc Palace keycard deactivated after two losing seasons.

Does Bowles have the luxury of another losing season in an effort to develop a top-shelf edge rusher when he has yet to demonstrate an ability to do so?

You know, the same guy who when asked about edge rushers, often replies, “We ask them to do other things.”

  1. Proudbucfan Says:

6-11 or 7-10 season coming, hate to say it. I have no faith in the coach anymore. This Joe is right. Todd can’t develop a pass rusher, never has, what makes any of us think he’s going to now ?

  2. Sean Says:

Joe, I’m with Ira. No edge rushers we’ve drafted have left us to become anything good. That’s like blaming the Bucs coaches for not making freeman and jamies a hof quarterback. You have to pick the right guys. Just like Licht had an ugly run drafting running backs for a while he’s had an ugly run drafting DEs. Im more worried he’s going to pick fhreast talented one. Noah spence, Chris braswell, shoyinka???

  3. Beeej Says:

If JTS or Braswell suddenly become all-pro ELSEwhere I’ll subscribe to this. We’re just using the wrong criteria to select them

  4. OLDSCHOOL1976 Says:

Now this is a good question. And it is why ‘if’ they take an edge with their first pick it will be Messidore. He is already a good pass rusher so Todd just has to teach him how to drop back and cover RBs running wheel routes down the sideline for 40 yards

  5. Stpetematt Says:

That’s the nice thing about Mesidor. He doesn’t really need all that much development..

  6. Hodad Says:

Does he have time? He’s going on his 7th season as DC, and 5th as HC, he’s had the time, just not the result. He obviously didn’t turn Shaq, or Jpp into an edge, they came that way. All our edge rushers haven’t developed into anything special under Bowles, that’s not going to change.

  7. JimBobBuc Says:

Licht is drafting for the franchise, not Bowles. This will be Bowles last season, but after he leaves, we will still have Mesidor playing for a new coach who knows how to develop edge guys. Mesidor is also one of the most NFL-ready edge players.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

ProudBucFan … ‘This Joe is right. Todd can’t develop a pass rusher, never has, what makes any of us think he’s going to now?’

You surely just made ‘this Joe’ feel good, but MAYBE it’s not so much about ‘development’ as it is about what our OLBs are being asked to do in Todd’s hybrid 3-4 defense. And despite that, personally I think that YaYa has ‘developed’ into a quality OLB. I’m also convinced that Shaq ‘developed’ here more-so than he did in Denver (he had 14 sacks in 4 yrs as a Bronco, but 45 sacks in his 5 yrs as a Buc despite injuries).

    Bowles’ defenses here have actually been very consistent in terms of the number of sacks they’ve gotten each year … until 2025. From 2019 thru 2024 we got 2019 – 47 (ranked #8); 2020 – 48 (#6); 2021 – 47 (#9); 2022 – 44 (#10); 2023 – 47 (#8); 2024 – 46 (#11) but in 2025 that fell to only 37 sacks (#19).

Easy to see that Bowles’ defenses ranked in the Top-10 in TEAM SACKS from 2019-2023, but fell out of the Top-10 in the past 2 years. Of course, our defense also dropped out of the Top-10 in 2024 (#16) and 2025 (#20). Lots of reasons IMO, but stinky pass rush ranks right up there.

Point being ProudBucFan, Todd Bowles has always been more concerned with TEAM as opposed to INDIVIDUAL stats IMO. Actually the only OLB who’s had 10 or more sacks in any given year has been Shaq (19.5 in 2019 and 10 in 2021), although JPP came close in 2020 (9.5).

Looks like the top pass rusher starting in 2019 has been Cleveland’s Myles Garrett (105 sacks in past 7 yrs – average of 15 sacks/year … WOW). Yet in those 7 yrs the Browns have only had TWO winning seasons, and their defense had an average ranking of a little worse than #18 and averaged only 42 sacks/year as a TEAM, less than Bowles’ Bucs teams did (45 sacks average from 2019-2025).

  9. gotbbucs Says:

The better question will be, can Mike Tomlin get the guy to unlearn whatever Bowles and Co. try to teach the him in his rookie season?

Bowles is so focused on stopping the run that he castrates the pass rush. Bowles is a dead man walking.

  10. RodMunchislowIQ Says:

Only if Todd can find a Cold Day in Hell !

  11. Lakeland Says:

Todd Bowles defense isn’t a 4-3 traditional defense that Edge Rushers get sacks
OLB in Bowles schematic 3-4 defense has to do multiple things, switches, etc
The defense is designed to confuse QBs, to keep them guessing
You never know where the pressure is coming from
You never know who is in coverage

The only problem is finding guys with high football IQ
Guys that can think on their feet, play fast, and think even faster.
This defense isn’t designed for Pure Pass Rushers

Fans has to understand this defense, the schemes, the switches

  12. Tony Says:

Does Bowles have time to step down still? That should be the question.

  13. Curse of Gruden Says:

    It’s doubtful.

  14. Lakeland Says:

I think guys like Malachi Lawrence, TJ Parker will excel in this defense
They probably wouldn’t get double digits sacks.
But they will contribute to the pass defense in other ways
Ways like picking up a TE, setting the edge etc
They have the athleticsm and football IQ that it takes

  15. Lakeland Says:

In 2020, the year we won our last Super Bowl
We had 48 sacks for the season
But we didn’t have a double digits sack guy.
We were led by JPP 9.5 sacks
But we also got 9 inside from Devin White
We got 6 from Suh, on the defensive front
8 from from Shaq Barrett on the outside

  16. 813bucboi Says:

question should be does he have time to teach them his “complex” defense lol….

players arent grasping the defense which is hindering their development…

fortunately for bowles, he has a few naughty pics of the glazers so he’s save lol

    GO BUCS!!!!

  17. Lakeland Says:

    813bucboi

They have been drafting the wrong players for the defense
They should focus on drafting players that’s familiar with complex defenses
The only player I’ve seen then draft that played in a system similar to Bowles
    Is Tykee Smith from Georgia

Kirby Smart runs a complex defense, they switches from 4-3 to 3-4
And they don’t substitute players during the switch
The Mike makes the call, according to what he see
But Georgia have the personnel for a successful defense
The Bucs don’t have the personnel, they lack the right players

    .

  18. Fanofdabucs Says:

    JimBobBuc nailed it.

JL has been drafting for Bowles and what his scheme asks for the past 5 years. This year JL needs to lock Bowles in a closet and draft good football players regardless of what TB thinks he needs or doesn’t need.

This draft class will be more important to the next coach than the guy that’s on borrowed time.

  19. Smoke Porterhouse Says:

Guessing that the Bucs take Mesidor, if they think he’s ready to thrive even with terrible coaching.

Does Bowles have time to step down still? That should be the question.
    ^^^^^^^

If Bowles ACTUALLY did look in the mirror, which is one of his catch phrases, he would’ve already quit/resigned/retired.

  21. Bucs3 Says:

Real Question is CAN TODD BOWLES DEVELOP an edge rusher

  22. Bobby Says:

Bucs HC in January 2027 will be Zac Robinson.

  23. Lakeland Says:

Our biggest problem on defense has been controlling the LOS
When you run a hybrid 3-4 defense, you have to have the right guys up front
They have to be disruptive, violent, and create havoc
And the ILB has to be playmakers, playing in space
The OLB has to be speedy, able to rush the passer, drop in coverage, set the edge

We had smaller soft guys upfront on the defensive front
And that is what throws the whole scheme off

  24. Lakeland Says:

It don’t matter who the Head Coach is, or who the DC is
You will still need the right personnel on defense to succeed
The Bucs defense stunk for over a decade before Bowles
Because they never had the right personnel
They were always drafting the wrong defensive players

  25. Lakeland Says:

If the Bucs bring in a Mike Tomlin or Sean McDermott
They won’t be drafting these soft players Licht been drafting
If they hire a OC as HC, he will hire a tough DC
And he won’t be on board with drafting the defensive players the Bucs been drafting

  26. Defense Rules Says:

Lakeland … ‘Our biggest problem on defense has been controlling the LOS. When you run a hybrid 3-4 defense, you have to have the right guys up front. They have to be disruptive, violent, and create havoc.’

Preach on brother. We’ve already seen what works in Bowles’ defense: Vea, Suh, Gholston in the middle with JPP & Shaq as the OLBs. Worked well enough to win us a Super Bowl. Duh … now create the same thing a 2nd time. Vea, McDonald, Robinson in the middle with Diaby & Muhammad as the OLBs. That dog could hunt.

  27. Rob Says:

Good organizations dont let this lead their decision making process. The DL coaches will have more to do with his development than Bowles. If Keldric Faulk makes it past the Cowboys and is on the board for the Bucs, they should have his name written on the card and run it up to the podium. Unless they want to watch the Jets leap frog them AGAIN and steal another solid pass rusher.

  28. Tye Says:

Let’s be completely honest and call it like it is:
The Bucs have failed miserably by hiring IBS to be their HC!

whoever they draft will be for the next coaching staff which hopefully the owners already have done their due diligence and have a good idea who will be the Bucs next HC.

  29. 813bucboi Says:

    Lakeland

similar to what the eagles have done lol…copy cat league indeed lol

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  30. buc4evr Says:

It has nothing to do with Bowles being able to develop an edge rusher. It’s about picking the wrong player for the position. The 3-4 won’t work in this day and age with smaller OLBs going against big OTs. Bowles needs to use a base 4-3 and get big DEs or even DTs to play the outside. These guys should not be placed in coverage on a regular basis. Look at what Seattle did with four D lineman last year. Bowles blitz packages are being easily picked up by opponents so he needs to change the defense as QBs are finding the big holes: 3rd and 28, 4th and 14! Will he? probably not as he is square peg in a round hole kind of coach.

wont disagree with you at all because its obvious something is off…

when it comes to edges players, there seems to be a disconnect between the scouting departments player evaluation, Bowles/Licht players evaluations and player selection….

but something is definitely off when it comes to the edge position

    GO BUCS!!!!

  32. Lakeland Says:

Seattle won the Super Bowl with a hybrid 3-4 defense
Mike McDonald did the exact same thing as Bowles did against KC in SB
He constantly shifted to 4-3 defense, rushing 4 instead of blitzing
But the 3-4 is Mike McDonald base defense

Todd Bowles does the same thing
But last year we didn’t get any pressure from our defensive front
And it started with Kancey being out, and having to play Roberts

  33. dumboldguy Says:

You don’t develop edge rushers. They are either freaks of nature with a mean streak or they are not.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Number of defensive picks since 2020, in the first four rounds:

    2020: 1 (Antoine Winfield Jr., S)
    2021: 1 (Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, LB)
    2022: 1 (Logan Hall, DT)
2023: 2 (Calijah Kancey, DT), (YaYa Diaby, DE, 3rd round)
2024: 2 (Chris Braswell, DE, 2nd round), (Tykee Smith, S)
2025: 3 (Benjamin Morrison, CB, 2nd), (Jacob Parrish, CB, 3rd), (David Walker, DE, 4th)

Out of 24 potential picks in rounds 1-4, 10 were spent on defense…and 3 of those weren’t until last year.

    The DEs taken were:

YaYa Diaby. 3rd rnd. Good pick, but great? We’ll see this year.
Chris Braswell. 2nd rnd. Entering his third year. Has to show he can do it.
David Walker. 4th rnd. Has been a total wash so far.

We NEED to be aggressive in the first round if we want a pass rush. If ever Licht needed to trade up, it is now.

“You don’t develop edge rushers. They are either freaks of nature with a mean streak or they are not.”

    This!

  36. Lakeland Says:

    2024 Defensive Front

    Calijah Kancey. 7.5 Sacks
    Logan Hall. 5 5 Sacks
    Vita Vea. 7.0 Sacks
    CJ Brewer. 2.0 Sacks
    Greg Gaines. 1.0 Sacks
23 Total Sacks from defensive front

    2025 Defensive Front

    Calijah Kancey. 0 Sacks
    Logan Hall 1.5 Sacks
    Vita Vea 4.5 Sacks
    Elijah Roberts. 2.0 Sacks
    Greg Gaines. 2.0 Sacks
10 Total Sacks from Defensive Front

So our defensive front went from 23 sacks in 2024 to 10 in 2025
And it was a lot more less pressure from them
And it started with Kancey getting hurt, and Roberts, Gaines replacing him

Like l said, you need the right personnel for this scheme to be effective

  37. 813bucboi Says:

    lakeland

i hear you loud and clear brother!!!

i really hope bowles and his new defensive staff correct these issues:

    -lack of elite tackling
    -poor pursuit angles
    – eye discipline

if we can get those corrected, we should be improve tremendously….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  38. Mveal2006 Says:

Im getting weary of the overemphasis of edge rush and the use of mocking against the people that have successfully avoided the trap.

All of the big money edge guys were on losing teams

It takes coverage or situation to get a sack. Ball gets out fast or qb scrambles more than ever before. Rules want offense.

Hassan was the stupidest waste of money in years for the bucs and they have wasted too much draft capital here as well.

Like it or not other things on every play matter more special situations like where sacks happen.

And drafting potential instead of demonstrated skill is 2nd place on my pet peeve list.

So xan we talk more about o line db and inside lb instead of Longshots

  39. 3.28.Evans Says:

The atrocity is, we lost Mike because “everyone else” was fired. It was everyone else’s fault the Bucs went from 6-2 to 8-9, coming out flatter than pancakes after the bye and losing to some truly bad teams in horrific fashion. 3rd and 28. 4th and 14.

Don’t ever pin such results on the head coach. Fire everyone else, put blinders on and go whistling in the dark somewhere.

Our HC/DC is too brilliant and outstanding to be blamed for anything.

  40. BucFan1 Says:

    Todd Bowles develops Edge Rushers?

  41. firethecannons Says:

Lol, Joe, the answer is NO!, Bowles is already on borrowed time now. I do not expect the Glazers will tolerate anymore shenanigans from this coach like the press conference he gave with the foul language. Bucs get 4 wins 2026.

  42. Sal Volatile Says:

I do believe the owners want to win but what is their core philosophy ? Are they just viewing the team through the lens of an accountant seeing nothing but numbers ? The owners are the top of the pyramid and they should have a football philosophy and vision for the type of team they want for the town of Tampa and their fans. They need to make that philosophy clear so the GM acquires the players that fit and coaches that share the same.

What is it to be Glazers ?
    Dink and dunk ?
Smash mouth run the ball ?
    4-3 ? 3-4?
    Long ball ?
Is it speed or is it size ?
    Is it football IQ ?
    Is it heart ?
Is it desire and love for the game ?
    Is it intangibles ?
    Is it measurables ?
Is it follow the trend ?
Is it sophisticated and technical ?
    Is it accountability ?
    Is it discipline ?
Is it clean cut nice guys ?

Just WTF kind of team does Tampa have ?

Do the owners have a philosophy ?

If they don’t, I question THEIR love for the game.

Hint; What type of guys were pirates ?
Answer; Not Errol Leslie Thomson Flynn types.

Remember the fan displeasure when Gerald helped an opposing O lineman up from the ground ? That was nice guy behavior not PIRATE behavior.

  43. Obvious One Says:

    Your Reaching DR….
Your also cherry picking with your initial comment. Haven’t gotten to others yet. What’s funny is that you Absolutely Know that you Are…

And to be PERFECTLY HONEST….. Neither Bowles “nor” Licht have lined Any Thing up worth even a decent mention in the art form of the Edge Rusher….. This pair CAN NOT pick them much less teach them how to get to a qb. Well, unless it turns out to be either a freak accident or a Fantastic front 3 that Would Not be denied! And we haven’t seen that since SUH left.. so……

But nice try at practicing politics and “grey area” hopeium…..

  44. Sal Volatile Says:

    Sapp. Batman. Suh.

Which of these doesn’t fit. ?

  45. Usfbucs Says:

Rumors are that the Steelers are looking to trade Hightower or Herbig. Could we trade down with them to land Herbig? If so that could be huge, we address a need and still be in position to land DT, OL with a later pick in the first round then draft ILB in the second.

  46. Bobby M. Says:

He doesn’t….he hasn’t….better move is trading for proven talent or at least a part time player with efficient production. Bowles can’t develop his own defense into anything effective, his claim to fame is a SB roster that featured an all star defensive unit with JPP, Vea, Suh, Shaq, LVD, White, Winfield….pick your poison, an amateur playing nothing more than Madden football could coach that unit. He blitzes….thats it. By the 4th quarter if it’s a close game, we’re toast because the defense is gassed. We need to stop thinking he’s going to suddenly evolve, he’s 60+ yrs old, we’ve been watching the same head scratching issues since Arians was hired which are the same complaints Jets fans would have.

  47. Sal Volatile Says:

The new buzzword for the Bucs is “violence”.
    Just think about that.

What moron thought that up and who approved it ?

Yes, football is a violent sport and the NFL is all about messaging.

    violence
    noun
    vi·o·lence ˈvī-lən(t)s ˈvī-ə-
    Synonyms of violence
    1
    a
: the use of physical force so as to injure, abuse, damage, or destroy

Sapp and Suh weren’t violent but they were mean and nasty on the field. Suh is reportedly a very nice guy off the field.

  48. Ben Says:

Does he have a choice? Bowles is the biggest scam artist there is, riding coattails of OC successes. If the Bucs have a winning year, Robinson will be a HC. Gotta fire Bowles the fraud either way this year. This is his last year no matter what

  49. Sal Volatile Says:

John Lynch was never portrayed as “violent” but yet he did deliver violent hits to those crossing the middle.
It is all semantics of course but messaging is important.

The lack of a core philosophy isn’t resolved by the use of words.
If they want to get more “violent” why did they allow themselves to get soft in the first place ?

Three years ago they needed to “bulk up” on the O line.

Before that it was speed on defense.

This team suffers from dissociative identity disorder.

Mommy please help me figure out who I am.

  50. LynchMob50 Says:

Todd Bowles has all the intangibles of a good HC\DC!!!!

    And the culture!!!!

I’m shocked they don’t bring in a DC for Todd to blame everything on and fire after 2026.

It wouldn’t take much for the Glazer kids to justify his existence.

Even if it is just in their minds justified.

  51. Defense Rules Says:

Obvious One … ‘Your Reaching DR …. Your also cherry picking with your initial comment. Haven’t gotten to others yet. What’s funny is that you Absolutely Know that you Are. But nice try at practicing politics and “grey area” hopeium’.

Kinda think you need a new ‘handle’ because I don’t have the foggiest idea what you’re driving at (Hint: wasn’t that Obvious at all). ‘Cherry picking with my initial comment?’ Is that what stats are to you … cherry-picking? I enjoy discussing differences of opinion because that’s how we learn IMO, but you’ve gotta kinda give me a clue about what you have an issue with.

  52. Sal Volatile Says:

Kancy was billed as perhaps another Aaron Donald or close to it.
Donald was special no doubt but how many players that size succeed on a defensive line. Kancy isn’t on the edge he’s on the inside brawling with some big bad boys. That might explain why he’s always injured. He’s a smaller guy suffering the violence of much larger guys. DUH !

  58. Sal Volatile Says:

Logan Hall was a “little undersized” at 6’6″ 280lbs or so it was stated. Kancy is listed as 6’0″ 280lbs.

The average NFL O lineman size is 6’5″ 315lbs.

    ‘nough said…

    Mveal2006 Says:
“Hassan was the stupidest waste of money in years for the bucs and they have wasted too much draft capital here as well.”

It was a cap saving move…and they have not drafted a DE in the first round since before 2020.

How is that wasting draft capital?

  60. Kenton Smith Says:

Sal Volatile. “Mommy, please help me figure out who I am”. That one was worth the price of admission! Anyway, how do we figure out the answer to that age old question? We draft Jacob Rodriguez with the 15th pick of the 2026 NFL draft and put him in charge of our defense. Our defense will figure out real quick who they are. And they’ll get comfortable with who they are. Yes, they’ll even revel in who they are. And it’ll be as fun as a barrel of monkeys just watching them play. Because one thing that 23 year old kid (some hater around here is adding to his age) knows is who he is. And our defense needs that.

  61. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Calijah Kancey had no sacks because he was injured.

  62. Sal Volatile Says:

Todd Bowles can’t even hire a good OLB coach much less develop a true edge rusher. George Edwards comes to mind.

    Development should start in college.
Take for instance Braswell. Didn’t Saban say something like ” As long as they just let him rush the QB he’ll be fine.” ?

So Bowles takes a poor coach and tries to “develop” Braswell into something (coverage) he isn’t suited to do.

That in my mind is incompetence.
I think Bowles suffers from a lack of insight and inflated confidence.

  63. Sal Volatile Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    ^^^^^^
DING DING DING we have a winner.

Kancey , in my opinion, is always injured because he is constantly getting the crap beat out of him by much larger men.

  64. Sal Volatile Says:

Let’s speculate. If Bowles had put Braswell into a position to succeed and utilized him properly Braswell may have become at least an adequate productive pass rusher. If the coaching staff did not recognize the traits and talents and asked too much of him then their incompetence may have damaged a players confidence.
So who evaluated Braswell and persuaded Licht to draft him ?
Was it a scouting failure ? Was Bowles over confident in his ability to coach him up ? Was Licht giving in to Bowles wishes or did he make a poor draft choice ? David Walker’s success or failure will be very telling.

It sure appears as though the coaching staff is not putting players into positions to succeed and that would explain a lot regarding player frustrations.
