Report: Todd Bowles’ Meeting With Team Glazer Complete; Changes To Assistants On The Table

Update.
For Bucs fans, black smoke is sifting above One Buc Palace.
(For those unaware, black smoke over the Vatican means the conclave of cardinals has not selected a new pontiff.)
Bucs coach Todd Bowles currently remains as the team’s leader.
However, plugged in Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports changes to Bowles’ staff are very much on the table. This could (keyword: “could”) include a defensive coordinator.
Todd Bowles met with ownership Tuesday and has a staff meeting scheduled for Wednesday. Signs point to Bowles returning for a fifth season as Tampa Bay’s head coach. One model that Tampa has kicked around is beefing up the staff around Bowles with a new offensive coordinator and additions to the defensive staff (possibly a coordinator role). Think back to the Eagles when they went big with Moore and Vic Fangio two years ago. Doing so is costly and could prevent Tampa from following suit. But these are the type of big-picture ideas discussed in Tampa lately. The offense’s regression — the team fell from third to 22nd in yards per game over the past year — could prompt change. Improving the defense isn’t so simple. Bowles is still considered a skilled defensive playcaller, and the lack of elite pass rushers could complicate any push for a top coordinator candidate.
Joe is all for a new defensive coordinator, someone not previously affiliated with Bowles who has free rein to run the defense as he sees fit.
This nonsense of never developing an edge rusher must stop if the Bucs are to be anything more than the kings of a crap division, better known for getting their hats handed to them whenever they are on national television.
When you consistently have a struggling, if not inept, pass defense in a passing league and you have the worst (as in No. 32) red zone defense, at some point an adult in the room with a sober mind has to sit back and confess what has been attempted in years past simply is not working.
And no, Joe does not trust Bowles to develop an edge rusher, sorry. When he develops his next double-digit edge rusher, it will be his first. YaYa Diaby is a nice edge rusher for a No. 2 guy.
Joe has no idea how special teams coach Thomas McGaughey can continue with the Bucs. Good guy, responsible guy, bad results. A superior kicker can only cover up so much.
If there are no staff changes, that just tells Joe the Bucs are not serious about resolving long-standing issues.

I would not be surprised if there’s still a bigger change with Bowles being released. The dude’s reason to be retained is 3 division titles wherein he’s 25 and 26. You can’t possibly convince me that they think this is acceptable. Maybe ‘staff changes’ are in the table in addition to Bowles being changed. Tampa needs a defensive coordinator, a offensive coordinator and a special teams coordinator. Let’s make all these changes, but keep the head coach, like he wasn’t part of the issue? I like some others on here, won’t spend a dime on the bucs in 2026 if this is the standard. It’s embarrassing that this is the standard, dead last in almost every metric defensively since the bye week. Players saying too many walk throughs, players taking on personality of the soft coach. Broken coverages, no pass rush and the famous “communication break down”, it’s up to the DAMN COACH to have them prepared and to EXECUTE. What an absolute joke this is, what sane D or O coordinator would come to this lame duck, dead man walking coach, NONE! He promoted Grizzard and was a mostly a disaster, his staff aside from Carberry was horrendous. They fired better coaches for less than this, Bucs will always be my team but this is a straight punch to the gut to all fans and nothing screams “Don’t care” more than this. Any other owners with any flame in the gut would of fired Bowles the second the season ended, I’m totally distraught over this as should all Bucs fans.

It would be a safe bet that there more to this than what’s on the surface. I feel we are in a transition period, and this is just a step towards a new regime
in TB. It will be interesting who is brought in (OC and or DC?!) and their trajectory, or perhaps getting them ready to take over HC in 1-2 years.
When you think this through, weighing the contracts, age of our team, strength of division opponents and their trajectory/personnel, does it make sense to go the rebuilding route right now – this upcoming year? I’m not so sure, we might be at a point in the division where we have 1-2 years (more like 1) of an actual chance of winning (with our personnel).

It can’t be justified but the owners have few if not no other options.
At this point if Harbaugh doesn’t take the job, the most likely outcome (in my view) will be the owners paying big bucks for both an OC and DC and telling Bowles not to mess with team morale and chemistry. This buys the owners the time to figure things out that should have been done 2 years ago. Baker is the wild card.

Bowles is who is at this point at best you will be 8-8 you are not going to get much more than that from him. We have seen that for the last 3 plus years. Like many media “reports,” this doesn’t say much. If the Bucs had decided to retain Bowles, they would have a press release to that effect like the other teams that kept their coaching staffs (e.g. the Bengals). “Sings point to” isn’t a press release, it is a magic 8 ball response. To me, the Bucs are keeping their options open, seeing what plan for a staff Bowles would have if he stays HC, while likely inquiring about what else is out there (e.g. I would be shocked if they weren’t one of the teams with a current coach that contacted Harbaugh’s agent yesterday). Since all reports have been for the last year that the Glazers think they have a good team, it is unsurprising that they are hesitant to “start over” unless they are aware of a known commodity that they think is better, or unless Bowles can’t convince them of a viable path forward. I am sure when they make a definitive decision, we will get a clearer “report” from the media. I woudn’t be surprised if they went either way, although my preference is to hire a new coach especially in light of some of the player criticism over the reliance on walk throughs, etc. That is firmly HC decision making, and not something that you can blame on staff. Could the ST units never work out their coverage issues because they were doing walkthroughs and not live reps? Same for the offense with the constant reshuffling of the Oline due to injuries?

There is only one way that I continue to follow the Buccaneers this year with Todd Pauls as their head coach. That would be if he fires himself as defensive coordinator.
They hire somebody new to be defensive coordinator with a new approach and to be the play collar. Bowles becomes a walk around type of coach the way Mike Tomlin is.
Additionally, their special teams assistant must be gone. These are my two absolute otherwise I will see you guys in 2027 when we have a top five draft pick and a new head coach.

It’s fair of the team to take stock mid-season (6-2, glowing praise for the “culture”) vs. ultimate results for the season. Bowles’ profanity-laced press conference, saying coaches have done all they could, must stand out to Licht and the Glazers. Doubt it will be forgotten, as Bowles has nothing left in the tank.
Most fans don’t view Bowles as being on par with Sirianni, who merited another year with new coordinators. And if the Bucs are going to go with new coordinators and consequently system changes, they might as well start with a clean slate and get the best coach available.
For the record, I too won’t be spending anything on the Bucs next season if they retain Bowles. The NFL is in the business of selling perpetual hope that your team can win it all, and with Bowles that’s demonstably untrue.

It’s so sad to me that it appears he is staying. I guess ownership is content with the mediocrity that has been Bowles time as head coach. I am tired of seeing a leader who is coaching not to lose instead of coaching to win. All this team will ever be is average at best. The sad thing is the best years of some of these Bucs Stars have been wasted. It’s no secret this team has needed defensive line help. It has for several seasons. We can’t keep blitzing to hide the lack of Defensive line pressure and sack production. I am spoiled to have followed the Bucs back when we had really strong defensive lines that got after the Quarterback and stopped the run on the way to the QB. Now we need both Defensive line and Linebacker upgrades. If Bowles couldn’t get it done back when Tampa was younger and stronger on Defense and Offense, what on earth makes anyone think he is going to now? It’s depressing to see this team stand pat with the current leadership. It just feels like the team is regressing.

I remember in the 90’s when the BENGALS SUCKED soooo bad and for soooo long, that NO ONE EVEN CARED, or watched ANY of their games. And, THIS was coming off of TWO FRESH “Super Bowl” Appearances in ‘82 and ‘89… I’m talkin “Welcome To The Jungle,” The “Ickey Shuffle,” and ALL THAT LoL.
Back then, they were actually all “BLACKED-OUT” (at home) every Sunday, since nobody went to the games. Though, we were totally good with that, since we didn’t want to watch THEM PLAY ANYWAY… We much preferred watching BETTER TEAMS PLAY, and much better games. THEN, when the TITANS moved to Nashville, with Steve Air McNair, Eddie George, & Jeff Fisher’s DEFENSES… It was OVER. Everyone LOVED those teams, and the ‘laughing stock’ BENGALS WERE DONE. A total afterthought.

I still don’t know how bringing in an experienced DC is supposed to work when he’d be working under a lame duck HC who he might wrestle with and everyone might be gone next year. If I’m a decent DC I say heck no to that. This sounds like a disaster for next season

Like I said. They just gave him an extension 6 months ago! They aren’t firing him. Major staff changes though are certainly likely.
The team won 3 division titles under him and started 6-2 this year. They likely think the team isn’t as bad as fans think it is and hesitant to blow it up. Now if they 3-14 next year, then they pull the plug.

Let me see if I have this correct:
The idea/model being kicked around is to beef up on the offensive and defensive staffs like Philly did…..but it is too costly.
Bringing in a new defensive coordinator, but the lack of a good pass rusher will be preventative to doing so.
So the direction from the meeting is “here’s our awesome idea to fix it, but we can’t actually do it”
Either Fowler is grasping because someone fed him this line of garbage, or someone fed him this line of garbage because we’re tanking in ‘26. I’d bet it’s the latter.

Let’s face facts people, most of you who vote in these SHOCK POLLS to fire the coach, that carries ZERO weight with ownership. and there are probably no more than 100 season ticket holders in here, TOPS. The Glazers just gave the coach a raise and a good job hug a year ago. They probably feel they can’t fire him without a warning.
Joes, you can bet anything there will be BIG changes to coaching staff, and free agents to boot. I dont care if he is retained or fired, im gonna cheer on my team same way I have for 46 years. The very least to please the fans would be maybe a new OC and definitely a New DC with No strings attached to call his own game..if Todd Bowles can’t agree to that..then his intentions about helping this team win games is just a after thought..he had 4 years to try his system without a really good outcome as far as getting better each year..especially after this season’s collapse..we have some Great players on this team that deserve better..and the same for the fans..

If the report is accurate, it feels like when the Glazers went cheap with Morris and Dominick. I’m ok with a ‘let’s suck for a bit to rebuild’ plan, but what the report indicates is a plan that will just result in more mediocrity. Mid round picks, nothing earth-changing, and a middling HC and a high-variance middle of the pack QB.
Just suck fully if that’s the plan. Trade Baker, start your 3rd string QB, suck for draft picks, then fire Todd in a year or two and rebuild with a talented young OC/HC and lots of good young players.

Ownership knows keeping Todd Bowles is a the wrong trajectory. They don’t care. The reason they are keeping him is the only question worth asking. Fans know nothing of their financial motives so it could have something to do with that? Here’s the thing about that. All of the things that a HC exclusively does, he sucks at. He doesn’t know when to call a timeout. He doesn’t know when to go for it on 4th down. Things like that, he’s as clueless as I am. The game announcers routinely question his decision making during the broadcast and more often than not, they are correct. So, if his defense sucks (and it does) and he isn’t very good with the Head Coaching duties, other than saving the Glazers the inconvenience of paying him not to work, what is the point of keeping him around?

I’ve been a Univ. of Kentucky season ticket holder (both basketball AND football), SINCE BIRTH… Over 28+ Basketball Tickets, including 2 literally ON THE FLOOR… 4 in the 5th-Row behind the visiting bench, 6 (I think) 1ST-ROW right under the basket, AND several others scattered all throughout (including 4 at the very TOP ROW in the UPPER DECK, that we’d use for “PASS-OUT” Tickets LoL, to use in order to leave during ‘halftime’ and walk over to the Hyatt Bar next door to have a few drinks Hahah. Then, Idk… Not as many as we use to have but we also, still have SEVERAL UK-Football TIX, including a Luxury Suite/Box (my buddy/driver one-time, told the ‘valet official’ dude, that we were going to the “SUITES (like a jacket) PARKING” LMAOOOOO. Ya know, you DON’T have access to ALL THOSE ‘TICKETS’ without being EXTREMELY CLOSE to the program… So, let’s just say that I’ve known ALL ABOUT COHEN for a real long time, and I WISH HIM VERY WELL, THERE. Wildcat” (Bill Keightley) HIMSELF (a freaking treasure), Van Florence, Reggie Hanson, Shawn Finney, and many many more. Way too many to even mention. Hell, even Mitch (current AD). And, PITINO. Was EXTREMELY CLOSE with Van, Mr. Wildcat (they’re both now dead), & Tubby Smith and his wife.
I have soooo MANY FREAKIN’ STORIES. Have even SHOWERED LoL at TUBBY’S HOUSE, after a round of golf… We took a limo up to Cincy afterwards, for a Reds Game that evening!!!! It was HILARIOUS. Just soooo much FUN. Tubby used to like havin’ a little ‘drink’ every now and then (vodka-7) LoL. His wife would always come up to me inside of our Box at the football games and tell me to “Fix Tubby Up” and give me a little wink haha… But, ALL the former basketball players used to hang in OUR BOX. So, did LoL “Montgomery Freakin’ GENTRY” LMAO. Our Box was THE PLACE to BE. 💯.
My Dad used to let the university use his plane. HUGE MISTAKE. Before we even knew-it, the friggin AD at the time (Larry Ivy’s) WIFE, would literally call up OUR PILOT, and have HIM FLY HER from Lexington to Knoxville JUST TO GET HER FRICKEN HAIR DONE… THEN, BACK. MONTHLY. So, think about THAT!!!! Prob at LEAST $10-GRAND just to get HER fricken HAIR DID. I always saw “through it” all, but my dad always just ate-it UP. It’s really pathetic.
They just started taking ADVANTAGE. They get you into a situation to where YOU CAN’T SAY NO. @ jonny – Hairball would definitely be a better option than BOWLES, but NOT even close to the best candidate, OR ‘direction’ for the franchise. MANY other much better options than HIM. No one has done LESS WITH MORE than what he has. I can go on with the many reasons for why, but I already have. He’s DONE. Old Special Teams Coach, CAN’T CALL PLAYS, & the game has passed him by… Lost the entire locker-room. Not a long term fix. Just soooo MANY MORE. But, I’m just too tired and really don’t care LoL. Not MY #1, but Stefanski wouldn’t been 1000X BETTER on soooo many levels.

People just THINK that Hairball would jump at the chance to take this job… But, it’s just not even close to being the reality! Now, if he was desperate to still continue coaching at 63 years old, then the Bucs Job would definitely NOT be his first choice. The only way he would ‘take-it’ is if he got no other ‘bites’ from any other teams. People need to wake up! THIS Bucs Job in its current state is NOT a “Top Job” or ROSTER. AND, Jason LICKT would NOT be capable of landing a ‘top-tier’ level HC to begin with. It’s pretty bleak right now. NO ‘high-end’ BIG NAME HC is coming HERE for Jason Frickin LICKT. Let’s be REAL.

Do you think LIcht is waiting to see what happens with Baker, and whether he will truly be our Franchise QB?
Does a new HC want to come here and have to change out Baker if he stinks again? Maybe one more year to see which Baker shows up

Schedule next year already screams sub 500, won’t spend any money and probably win 3 games, maybe get lucky in draft rebuild and decent again in 4 or 5 years.
