Josh Grizzard Fired

January 8th, 2026

Gone.

Less than two days after being retained as Bucs coach, Todd Bowles isn’t messing around.

The Bucs have dismissed offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard. This comes from Adam Schefter of ESPN. And Grizzard is not the only offensive coach who must clean out his desk.

Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis was sent packing.

So the rumors there would be a staff shakeup were not wrong. Now, Joe is wondering, when do the Bucs post the opening for defensive coordinator?

Bowles almost seemed to tip this offensive playcaller move on Monday when he said Grizzard learned things this season he could “take with him.”

    Scapegoat.

  2. Hammis Says:

Next is the DC, oh wait.

  3. Simeon4HOF Says:

Needed to be done, but he has nothing to do with our horrid Defense

  4. Bee Says:

    One and done.

Who is the great offensive mind that going to come to the Bucs to risk his career on Bowles and Baker for ONE season?

Grizz wasn’t that great but how you coach accuracy and catching? The OC cant do it all!

Are the Bucs going to fire some of these underperforming players as well as the coaches?

  5. Simeon4HOF Says:

He’ll likely land in Duval lol

  6. Steven007 Says:

Had hopes for him as he was the third down guy in the Coen regime. But that didn’t seem to translate. Very much seem to be in over his head. Question is who will we get as OC with a lame duck coach? Unless they build in an ascension to HC as part of the deal.

  7. Eric Says:

Glazers must have said fire Josh and hire a DC your days of running the defense are over

  8. LakelandB Says:

With Bowels only having one more year on his contract, how good of an offensive coordinator are the Bucs going to be able to get? Maybe a washed up one.

  9. BucsFan81 Says:

Should have fired Bowles with everyone else.

  10. Davey Says:

This is just cop out window dressing unless they bring in a defensive coordinator. It may be warranted if he and Baker weren’t on same page. But if the GM and HC are holding the OC accountable, they darn better do the same on the even worse other side of the coaching ball.

  11. August 1976 Buc Says:

    THIS HAD TO HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!

Not Happy Bowles stayed, BUT THIS HAD TO HAPPEN. GRIZZ AINT NO WIZZ.

Finally a sliver of good news……

NOW GET A DC and junk this abomination of a Defense!!!!!!!!

  12. D-Rome Says:

It’s the right move. The Bucs averaged 20.3 points per game since the bye week. That’s not good enough.

  13. Freddy PA Moxie Says:

Special Teams Coordinator soon to follow? Please.

    Offense struggled, yes.

Special Teams was an abomination of epic proportions.

  14. JS Says:

I’m sorry. I didn’t know Grizzard coached Special Teams.

  15. MadMax Says:

Wont matter who replaces him with conservative todd in charge…..

  16. DBS Says:

Special Teams coach should have been the first launched. Also Mr bored needs to be gone

  17. jug Says:

2 out of the last 3 OC’s for the Bucs are now head coaches so why wouldn’t you think this would be a destination for a high level, hungry OC? It’s a bridge to getting HC opportunities and if we are all hopeful a bridge to replacing the current HC at some point.

  18. johnnythemoon Says:

LOL…What good coach will come here with Bowles as a lame duck

  19. NYbucsfan Says:

He is the scapegoat. Todd should fire himself. The defense was worse than the offense and had more injuries. Who’s going to want to work for Todd now? The fans hate him. At most he’s got one year left before they s*** can him. He’s a joke, and his ownership is a joke right now. It’s unbelievable how this ownership group is just ignoring the fan base.

  20. Ricky Says:

There is no hope for us. You can make a point that he hired Grizz for the sole purpose to give himself another year

  21. Usedtocould Says:

    Yeah, no kidding.

Exactly! How in the heck was Grizz fired before the ST coach? Stinks of Bowels to me

  23. JA Says:

So the house cleaning has begun, but the mop remains old and used up.
    But questions remain …
Did the decision to keep Todd Bowles as head coach make the Bucs better?
    No!
Did the decision to reward regression make the Bucs better?
    No!
Was the decision to keep Bowles in lieu of losing a good chunk of your fan base a logical one?
    No!
To the Glazer family: what gives? What was the rationale behind your decision. We fans often pay a sizable sum to support your product.
So, how about some reciprocity by closeting your perpetual reticence for a few minutes and offering up an explanation?
As Chester Nimitz said to Admiral Halsey at Leyte Gulf, “The world wonders!”

  24. Coconut Doughnut Says:

    HIRE DABOLL

  25. Dave Ball Says:

He was not bad. It’s the special teams coach that really needs to go.

  26. Tbbucs3 Says:

Tough business right move. Best of luck to Grizzard.

  27. DaveBucsFan Says:

I’m not so sure Josh wasn’t compensating on offense by trying to maintain possession so the defense didn’t have to be on the field… Just a thought. It’s odd that there was such a drastic difference after the bye week. Or because Baker was more injured than we knew…

  28. Billy Bucco Says:

If the ST Coordinator isn’t fired next it will surprise me!!
Of course I’m already surprised so who cares.

  29. Ben Says:

The fact that he was fired before the ST coordinator is wild AF. Bowles will never change. ST and defensive assistants need to go

  30. Selmon Bros Says:

I bet if the Glazers didn’t have to can the Manchester United coach on Monday that Bowles would be gone.

  31. RagingBrisket Says:

    Scapegoat

  32. ElioT Says:

ST coach won’t be fired. He’s a protected class.

  33. Bobby M. Says:

First guys to go aren’t buddies with Bowles….shocker! You can’t coach accountability and then give the worst coaches a pass. Grizzard was essentially a rookie play caller, he was going to have some growing pains. Our special teams and defensive assistants were all vet coaches yet they failed miserably and get a pass?

  34. infomeplease Says:

Come on Joe, everybody knows Todd’s defense is good!! It was his coaches and the players not his soft scheming!! Not his lack of adjusting his scheme to adapt to what the opponents where attacking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Sarcasm lol)
p.s. shouldn’t the first coach fired be that special teams guy?

  35. Outrigger Says:

Can’t believe the Special Teams coach hasn’t been fired. He should’ve been fired after the Houston game week 2. He must have pictures of Todd.

  36. bucnjim Says:

Special teams cost the Bucs more wins than the offense & defense put together. That might be a little exaggeration, but not much of one.

  37. Rusty Shackleford Says:

Go get Matt Nagy or Jay Gruden.

  38. Lord Cornelius Says:

It’s hard to know who is responsible for what anymore. Never was any clear accountability this year but the defense was more dissapointing to me than the offense. Had way less injuries to overcome and have sucked for years now

  39. Rusty Shackleford Says:

Who here would accept Raheem Morris as DC only ? He is a good defensive coach, as evidenced by his absence in 2006 and what happened when he returned in 2007.

  40. BakerFan Says:

Well if a successful OC comes in he is almost guaranteed a HC job.

  41. HC Grover Says:

    Here come Leftwich?

  42. FormerBucFan Says:

So they fired the white guy…shocking

  43. buc4evr Says:

Feel kind of sorry for Grizzard, he should have never been promoted to a position that he had no experience in. Kind of stupid on the Bucs part. ST has to go along with the secondary and LB coaches. If the Bucs dont get a DC it will be extremely disappointing.

  44. DS Says:

Special team coach, dline coach lb coach db coach lol

  45. RagingBrisket Says:

Firing a first year coordinator with a beat up qb and missing over half the offensive starters all year because he couldn’t cover the stink of a relatively healthy and atrocious defense that couldn’t anyone all year long. Zero accountability
    Bowles and Licht suck.

  46. HC Grover Says:

    LOL HC,DC,OC

  47. Tautology Says:

Fans need to vote Bowles out with their pocketbooks.

Barring some kind of miracle OC hire or miracle new players, this is going to be one of the top 5 worst teams in the NFL next year.

  48. Bojim Says:

    ST coach???

  49. Lakeland Says:

    No 1,000 yards WR
    No 1,000 yards RB
    No 4,000 yards QB

The offense took a huge step backwards

  50. catcard202 Says:

    Danny Mac said it right…

Griz was not great but he also was 100% not the biggest problem.
Bowles D was Charmin soft. Did not create nearly enough pressure/sacks & couldn’t get off the field on 3rd downs…While the special teams were among the worst I have seen in 50yrs.

Bowles clearly should have been the 1st one to get walked out the building.

  51. Teacherman Says:

    Canales was a good hire.

    Coen was a good hire.

    But Grizzard?

He had never been an OC before!

Can we please hire an experienced OC?

With Bowels only having one more year on his contract, how good of an offensive coordinator are the Bucs going to be able to get? Maybe a washed up one.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Actually Todd has two more years. And coaches in the NFL can be fired anytime no matter how long their contract. Not blaming anyone, but this “fact” has been passed around here on JBF, and it’s just not accurate.

Ambitious young candidates can also see the track record of BUCS OCs to Head Coaching and see it as a desireable position.

    So there is that.

Rod Munch, where are you lately? Miss your insight into this whole process,

  53. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

    Scheelhaase as OC and HC-in-waiting.

  54. buc4evr Says:

Must have a new DC now that pushes for better defensive players.

  55. FormerBucFan Says:

Turning into a bigger sht show by the minute.

  56. Simeon4HOF Says:

Mike McDaniel just became available. Dolphins fired their HC

  57. Newbie Says:

Scapegoat for sure. I am of the belief that much of our offensive problems stemmed from all the injuries, lack of stability and continuity. I’m not defending Griz but I wouldn’t make him scapegoat either.

Our BIGGEST ISSUES are special teams and defense. Aside from CM, we have THE worst special teams in NFL and the defense is not too far behind. What are we doing about that?

Like I said yesterday, this is complete BS! Zero accountability by owners, front office and head coach. This is insanity.

  58. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Diabol or Mike McDaniel as OC,, Gannon as DC , special teams (anyone else )

  59. Mhystc Says:

Bring in Scheelhaase or grant udinski for OC, Bring in Brain Flores for DC. let him run the defense.

  60. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Hopeful additions

    New OC+
    * Offensive coordinator — Nathan Scheelhaase (Rams)
    * Passing game coordinator — Zac Robinson (Rams/Falcons)

    New DC
    * Defensive coordinator — Karl Scott (Seattle)

    New ST’s
    * Special teams coordinator — John Fassel (Titans)

  61. Obvious Says:

Ah yes…..now all us fans are happy and satisfied. That’s what’s going to fix all the problems.

    Sarcasm of course.

No issues with the move tho.

  62. StormyInFl Says:

Yet the defense – which was far worse than the offense remains untouched. Maybe because Bowles isn’t going to fire any of his buddies?

  63. BradyGronkFan Says:

Is there anything left of BA’s No Risk it No Biscuit? Get used to punts at 4 and 1 at the 50 yard line. Also more settling for 3 points with more than a minute left in the half.

  64. FormerBucFan Says:

Season ticket sales must be exploding…NOT…. LMAO

  65. Conte Piscatelli Says:

There goes the baker needs continuity excuse for keeping Coach Blows!!

  66. Faspro Says:

    Todd Bowles; HC/OC/DC…

  67. Another J Says:

That’s the only move that could have prevented the Bucs fans from starting a revolt. If we’re keeping a defensive coordinator that can’t stop anyone, we better out score the other team!

  68. BradyGronkFan Says:

Many leftover fans from the Brady years are still around. Many of us will drift to other teams. I’ll cheer for Evans wherever he goes, cheer for the Jags, and cheer for the Pat’s again now that they are a powerhouse.

  69. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Well there goes OC Mike McDaniel lol

  70. Saskbuco Says:

What a total embarrassing joke this has become. Licht and Bowles promote this guy knowing he never called plays after they interviewed Udinski, Scheelhaase and many other Rams guys and decided he was the one. Now they turn around and fire him after 1 season, when the defense was a total joke after the bye week and historically bad in every metric. What a terrible look for a franchise that claims to be loyal, Bowles leaves his dinosaur assistants everywhere and make Grizzard the fall guy, he wouldn’t fire any of his old buddies, him and BA are they same with that.

Grizzard wasn’t great, but Bowles should be the “man of his word, loyal to people” and did they right thing and stepped down, this mess is all on him and Licht, talk about accountability.

  71. Donny's Swollen Ankles Says:

The ST coach should have been the first one out the door.

  72. FormerBucFan Says:

This team won’t sniff a playoff game for another decade

  73. BradyGronkFan Says:

The Bucs will be .500 at best. There is good Baker and bad Baker. Good Baker makes an appearance with a strong supporting cast and good coaching. Bowles bring bad coaching. Guess which Baker will show up?

  74. Bradinator Says:

and the Special Teams guy is still employed?! No justice in this world!

  75. gotbbucs Says:

He isnt going to hire a defensive coordinator, there’s no way. If they arent going to fire McGaughey as special teams coordinator, then Bowles made the arguement that they just didnt have good enough personnel to succeed on defense and special teams, yet somehow, an offense without guards and tackles and wide recievers should have been good enough for Grizzard to succeed.
    Make it make sense.

  76. Bartow Buc Says:

Grizzard never should have been put in this position. It was clear from the beginning of the season that he didn’t have enough experience to coach the Buccaneers’ level of offensive talent. He consistently called terrible plays under pressure.
The Bucs offense should have averaged 30 points per game after the bye.
Heck, I remember seeing receivers running into each other because they didn’t know where they should be. I’ve never seen that before.
I’m sure Josh Grizzard is a great guy but it’s crystal clear, he has to go, and be replaced with an elite OC.

    Go Bucs 2026 !!

  77. BradyGronkFan Says:

It’s hard to evaluate Grizzard with Bowles looking over his shoulder.

  78. FormerBucFan Says:

I can smell the stitch coming from Tampa all the way up here in the panhandle.

  79. FL2NC - Bucs Fan Says:

Todd: Let me get another OC that I can tell to play conservative, that’s the ticket! SMH.

  80. Mintberry Crunch Says:

Geez– to everyone who says “what good coordinator would come for one year”: anyone who has confidence and wants to be a head coach. Not sure anyone wants to just be a coordinator for many years anymore. Look at all of the top HC candidates– many (including Canales and Coen) were coordinators for one year. Anyone with ambition and confidence would take the job even if it’s one year– because that’s their career plan anyway. Those days of saying coordinators are looking for multi-year commitments are gone– unless they have zero desire to move up.

  81. Unknownoutlire Says:

So what about the special teams coach?

  82. Pewter Power Says:

HOW TF DOES HE GET FIRED BEFORE THE SPECIAL TEAMS COACH????

  83. heyjude Says:

Scheelhaase or Randle El may be available.

  84. Stetematt Says:

Sad for him. Lack of guards and other O-linemen meant he could never really open up the playbook.

  85. Muscle Hampster Says:

Interesting three year run at OC for the Bucs. Two head coaches and a bust. Can’t win em all!

  86. Noleriff Says:

Good !!…He and Bowels can split the UHAUL !!!

  87. FormerBucFan Says:

This organization has been,is,and always will be a national joke

  88. AlstottNumber1 Says:

Someone had to take the cannon fire. This was an obvious cover move for Bowles AND Licht. For now, they are safe.

Bowles will never surrender the DC spot so miss me with all that hot air.

The offense was fine at 6-2. Then the annual Bowles collapse happened.

A wide open Swiss cheese pee wee league caliber pass defense then lost to three playoff teams in a row. Nearly lost to one of the worst teams in the league. Followed that up with FOUR straight losses to terrible teams. Then a Bowles special nearly lost game to close out the season.

But yeah, it was the offensive coach that needed to be purged. What a joke.

    36-36

  89. CC Pewter-Power Says:

Mike McDaniel as Bucs OC? Sounds good to me, anyone have any thoughts?

  90. Jmarkbuc Says:

How was the special team coach at the first one out the door? The second one out the door should be the DC

  91. Bucfan1988 Says:

    Smart move!!!

Been saying since before the bye week, you could tell Grizzard was in wayyyyyy over his head when it came to actual non-scripted playcalling….

He could not adjust and his route concepts were awful…

He was fine at the start of games when it came to those 1st 15 scripted plays but he lacked the ability to call it when the bullets were flying..

We need to bring in an EXPERIENCED playcaller with head-coaching potential…

That way if the offense looks better next season and Bowles once again craps the bed with his dumbass defense schemes, they can launch Bowles then promote the OC to a HC….

  92. FortMyersDave Says:

Joe said: “Bowles almost seemed to tip this offensive play caller move on Monday when he said Grizzard learned things this season he could “take with him.””

Looking back at the timing of that remark, it seems that Bowles had little respect for Grizz, basically hinting that the kid was going to be launched before he even met with the Glazers or did he have prior knowledge? Any way you cut it, Bowles’ presser was pretty insulting; dissing his OC and basically telling the world he is “owed and deserves” another go of the job and that HE won 3 straight division titles, not that his team did. Us fans may be stuck with Bowles but he is now the most disliked person associated with the Bucs since Hugh Culverhouse.

  93. LFGBucs Says:

I hope that hiring a real DC is the next step. It’s the only way Bowles can look good as a head coach.

  94. Obvious One Says:

Of Course HE WAS… Toad Bozo had to throw someone under the bus…

  95. Bucs3 Says:

Only organization where the coordinators are held to a higher standard than the HC

    REALLY

BOWLES IS RUNNING THIS TEAM BUT FIRE COORDINATOR

    JOKE

This has happened twice under this HC career here and nothing has change

    MAYBE ITS THE HC ??????

Don’t be scared of the woke crowd Glaziers

  96. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Danny Mac Says
    “Scapegoat.”

Nope. We all knew this was coming regardless.

  97. 813bucboi Says:

    why can Thad Lewis?!?

and why is the special teams coach and charlie strong still employed?

    this is BS!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  98. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Bee Says:
“Who is the great offensive mind that going to come to the Bucs to risk his career on Bowles and Baker for ONE season?”

I suspect that will be our next coach. So just about anyone would want it.

  99. LUVMYBUCS Says:

And for the love of God, please secure a capable veteran backup QB—someone who can step in when Baker’s banged up and legitimately push the second unit during offseason and camp work.

  100. Beeej Says:

He could never figure out how to get a bunch of pro bowl receivers open

  101. buccintimeforchanges Says:

    Rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic

  102. Fanofdabucs Says:

3rd and 28! Grizz should have stopped that.

Baker’s horrid INTs in the last month. Grizz should have never dialed up Ints.

The problem with this team is defense and ST, first and foremost. Yet the first makor moves are to retain Bowles and fire the OC.

    Cant make this stuff up.

  103. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Fort Myers

    Perfectly stated.

  104. Bucs3 Says:

So HC gets a pass for injuries (most on offense side)
    But OC is fired ????

  105. Jmarkbuc Says:

Grizzard had to go, but so does the DC, ST.,

I’d be interested in McDaniel for sure, but he may not want to come to a lame duck staff. Not without guaranteed money anyway. I wouldn’t blame him for that.

  106. Coburn Says:

When is McGaughey gone? And what DC is gonna want to come here in this situation? He will be fighting with bowles and be gone with him next year

  107. budlikedthebucarros Says:

wait wait :I agree scapegoat when he is fired before the DC and his old buddy ST yea he did not call great but before them? sounds like the reverse arian rooney rule to me

  108. It's Corn Says:

At least he can look for a job now instead of having to wait until they fire Todd Bowles.

One report, from Bowles himself, does not constitute an organizational decision or press release.

And nothing binds them from firing Bowles any time they want.

  109. Longtimebucsfan Says:

How does this fix our defense which caused more losses than our offense ever did. Fire the DC next. And of course the special teams coordinator. Zero hope for this team with Bowles at the helm.

  110. Colonel Angus Says:

    Waiting on the defensive firings

  111. TheBig Guava Says:

As the ship goes down the Glazers gave the lifeboats to the Captain (Licht) and first mate ( Gilligan/ Bowles) Everyone else including fans it’s sink or swim.
I bet they are partying in Atlanta, New Orleans and Charlotte today.
When Dave Canales is in the playoffs and you are not you know have great owners.

  112. K Says:

I would prefer Coen, but unfortunately he was literally the best coordinator we had. Which obviously isn’t saying much but defense and special teams were absolutely atrocious this year.

  113. Badbucs Says:

Exactly right Colonel Angus. There better be a lot of them fired too. Todd and his old time Tulane buddies from yesteryear are most of the problem. Grizz should not have been given the job to begin with. Then he was overwhelmed by Todd’s turtle approach. Poor kid never had a prayer. Whoever they bring in has to be able to stand up for himself like Coen.

  114. Cometowin2 Says:

Yes Grizz sucked as a play caller especially on first down, but how much of that was all the injuries especially at offensive guard. Did Bowles tell him he needed to be more conservative to keep his defense off the field??? How in the world is he fired before Bowels buddy the special team’s coach.

Someone had to fall on their sword. SCAPEGOAT!!!

  115. gp Says:

Since Bowles has been a head coach in this league, he has kept 1, ONE offensive coordinator. That was after his inaugural season with the Jets, and I’m not sure he was coach for a full season. The next season, he and each successive OC under Bowles, has been fired after being blamed for a losing season. With the notable exceptions of Cannales and Coen, who actually brought winning (above .500) seasons to Bowles.
Once again, the blame goes to someone else, and Bowles skates.
He must be a damn good salesman. Much better than he is a coach.

  116. Ugo Says:

Ok so let me get this straight, the Bucs defense is responsible for a collapse of historical proportion and the first people to be fired are on the offensive side of things…make it make sense.

Yes Grizzard needed to be fired, he is not ready to be an OC but how his firing comes before the special team coaches and most defensive assistants are sent packing is mind numbing and baffling

  117. Justin Says:

So we fired the Offensive coaches because they couldn’t compensate for the joke of a defense that we put on the field? That makes lots of sense.

  118. Letsbuccingo Says:

Evans, Godwin, McMillan and Bucky were out basically half the season so let’s get rid of the OC. So what’s Bowles excuse his defense was worse than the offense.

  119. Justin Says:

And for everyone who says Grizzard sucked as a playcaller, I have to ask, how do we know? Everytime Bowles talked offense, he talked about Time-of-possession and running the ball (like we’re playing 1985 football). I can’t help but think that Grizzards conservatism was directed by Bowles in order to keep his defense off the field as much as possible.

  120. Justin Says:

One thing about McDaniel as a potential OC hire. He’s the type of guy who could be an “interim” head coach should Bowles start 1-5 next year.

  121. Tom Petty Says:

Joes told us a year ago….. The offense wasn’t going to be a problem. It would be great. Top 5 or better – LOL

The Offense was horrible, atrocious, pitiful. I’m hopeful Todd will consider a new D. C. too but this was necessary.

  122. Darin Says:

Not enough to bring me back. The defensive coordinator and head coach are the two biggest problems. Whammy that mofo Glazers

  123. Rayjay1122 Says:

Big deal. Still going to suck.

  124. UGotRobbed Says:

BA stepped in to save his friend….TB should have been fired…he’s responsible! Bye Bucs!

  125. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

I’m sure Bowles threw him under the bus

  126. unbelievable Says:

His scheme was a large step backward, injuries or not.

He had not feel for the flow of the game.

Way too many obvious play calls, and poor play calls in critical moments.

  127. Dlavid Says:

The Glazers fired Grizz …. Bozo gets the credit !

  128. Wouldn’t pay a single Buc to see this squad Says:

Still have one big, fat, sloppy, uninspiring problem that we didn’t take care of.

  129. Will Says:

    Bowles needs to retire now

  130. Allen Lofton Says:

The Bucs got their receivers back after the Bye week and instead of playing better they under performed.

Granted Baker Mayfield had shoulder issues but that wasn’t the whole reason for the offense failing. Grizzard had never called plays and his inexperience in scheming to open players ended the Bucs season.

Finding a new OC will be Bowles and Licht number one priority. Todd Bowles needs a pass rusher. There are some veteran players like Crobsy available and Licht and the Glazers need to open the Bucs pocket book, plus give a 1st pick.

They do that and have another good draft the Bucs will be real contenders.
