Did Bruce Arians Sell Himself, Todd Bowles To Team Glazer?

January 8th, 2026

Buccaneers fans are struggling, collectively speaking, to understand why Team Glazer retained a head coach who oversaw an implosion during his fourth season captaining the pirate ship.

There may be an easy answer rooted in data and history.

One can look at Bucco Bruce Arians, whose contract as a Bucs senior advisor is in now its final days.

If you think Arians didn’t go to bat for Bowles with Team Glazer recently, you’re not paying attention. And Arians probably leaned, in part, on his own history.

The 2016 season was Arians’ fourth coaching the Cardinals. He was coming off a 13-3 record and one win the postseason. But that 2016 team had some injuries and dropped off to a 7-8-1 record. While Arians was popular in Arizona, he was taking a lot of heat and, ironically, a lot of it was for special teams failures that cost Arizona games.

Arians refused to fire his special teams coach, Amos Jones, after the 2016 season and even went public saying he’d rather fire himself because the problems weren’t on the coach: “They’re my players, so if I’m going to fire him, I’ll fire myself.”

Joe suspects Arians reminded Team Glazer his own team had issues in his fourth season, just like Bowles’ did.

Arians came back to Arizona in 2017 and the rest is history. He went 8-8 after injuries forced him to use three starting quarterbacks in 2017.  He retired and later led the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl.

Joe is not saying Bowles is Arians, only that Team Glazer knows a rough fourth season for a head coach doesn’t always spell doom.

Enter Ron Rivera. He went 12-4 as head coach of Carolina in 2013. In Rivera’s fourth season, 2014, the Panthers disappointed their fans and finished 7-8-1. But in the wacky NFC South, that was good enough to win the division and they beat Arians’ Cardinals in the playoffs.

A year later, the Panthers went 15-1 and lost in the Super Bowl.

A common thread, however, for those Rivera and Arians seasons were their teams closed on high notes. Arians’ 2016 Cardinals finished with back-to-back wins against division rivals and Rivera won four straight in 2014 to squeak into the playoffs with a losing record.

Bowles staying at the helm for 2026 might be Arians’ final “W” as a Buccaneer.

Joe hopes so, Bruce!

I wish the glazers were more ruthless. Say thanks for your contribution Bruce but we’re firing your incompetent buddy.

  2. buccintimeforchanges Says:

Tom Brady won a SB. Tom did. These people were PASSENGERS.

They are living off of someone else’s accomplishments.

This is a total disaster. The Glazers are hated on 2 continents. They are crap owners. They lucked into Brady.

  3. FormerBucFan Says:

    What a white wash.

  4. Dom Says:

BA should have lost all credibility when it comes to coaching personnel when he said Leftwich is an offensive genius that should be a HC. Good guy, and grateful for the things he did in Tampa, but its time to turn the page on BA and his bias opinions on coaching personnel

  5. AlstottNumber1 Says:

Keeping Bowles is a final W???

Must be a dispensary close to JBF headquarters.

Dave’s not here man. No, I’m Dave. Who? Dave! Dave’s not here.

  6. BucsFan81 Says:

Time to sell the team. Glazers can go move to the UK and wreak havoc on their stupid soccer team. Leave the Bucs here and get us an owner that cares about the team and the fans.

  7. Trey Alderson-Cloutier Says:

Bowles honestly is the worst head coach of the buccaneers I’ve ever seen in my life, and I’ve been a fan for over 35 years. How the hell he has a job right now is beyond me.

  8. Mike Says:

Bruce completely forced us to take this dogcrap head coach we didn’t want in the first place. He’s the one that got us in this mess, thanks for the Super Bowl but you royally screwed this franchise by giving us the definition of mediocrity.

  9. Popmike66 Says:

Brady didn’t win the Super Bowl along. Besides Arians no risk it no biscuit offense, Bowles defense did play pretty good at that time

  10. Larrd Says:

I do not see any 13-3 or 15-1 type records in Bowles’ past or future. The Glazers’ decision is befuddling. A real letdown.

  11. Davenport Says:

Why is anyone listening to Arians? He’s a part-part-time consultant who’s own actions forced us to be stuck with Bowles.

End this relationship and wish him well in retirement.

  12. Mhystc Says:

If Brady was still playing for us and the defense played the way it was, and we missed the playoffs.. I believe he’d tell Jason and the glazers Todd Bowles gotta go

  13. Boge Says:

So unlike Bruce, Todd has no issues placing the blame on everyone else and cleaning house because its not his fault. What a leader.

  14. Elite Vita Says:

Todd Bowles is lucky to have friends in high places!

  15. Bryan Says:

Could care less what Arians thinks at this point guy just collects a paycheck and he basically forced us to hire Bowles because of his retirement timing in 2022. Bruce Arians also thought Byron Leftwich was a competent coach how is he doing? Glazers are straight dumb and their ticket sales will suffer because of it

  16. D-Rome Says:

I believe this is largely a player issue than a head coach issue. The coaches who were fired today definitely didn’t do a good enough job.

  17. Getbuc80 Says:

If so Arians better bring his ass back and be retodds oc.

  18. Jackson Says:

Arians seems to have way too much influence with the Glazers. He wants to protect his chosen one. Arians now seems like the drunk uncle that won’t leave the family Reunion

  19. Teacherman Says:

The Raiders did what I wanted the Bucs to do.

    Hire Tom Brady for life!

  20. End_Insanity Says:

    2026 no excuses

  21. BucEmUp Says:

I liked bruce as a head coach.I would fire him and todd at their current positions

  22. Popmike66 Says:

Why are some many ticked with the Glazers and bringing back Bowles. Does Hugh Culverhouse bring back any memories ( horrific ). Also B Belichick was fired from the Cleveland Brown the original Brown organization which was a top franchise then, but his career didn’t turn out to bad. B Parcells was 1 game from being fired and we all know what he did as a HC. I am good with Bowles getting that 1 last chance especially seeing the assistants he has fired. I mean this look like a losing situation but every day life is about taking a chance. If it doesn’t workout, then next year you gonna have guys like Matt Lafleur who’s contract is up after 26. He run a offense Baker is familiar with and he has a hell of DC with him in J Hafley

  23. Hodad Says:

If true, BA can sell ice to Eskimos.

  24. Mveal2006 Says:

Was tgere something I messded,? Some explanation about reddick? Was it Bruce’s faukt?

  25. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

I’m still waiting to hear if the post-game profanity laced presser by Bowles sparked a meeting of the minds. No way, as an owner you see that on national coverage and you don’t call down to the office and at the very least check the temperature of your team. Off-season is in its infancy atp, this one imo may be more interesting than most the last few years

  26. Aqualung Says:

Tragic mistake and its gonna cost the Glazears a lot of money because only opposing team fans will be in the Sewer of Shame and they’ll have to fire the pregnant failure mid season.

Either that or it’s a full on tank job.

  27. HC Grover Says:

Is Lefty Lurking….Fire Arians I never like him a bit.

  28. Darin Says:

If so Ariana cost the glazers a whole lot of money. Arians coming back does nothing for me either. Let’s move forward not backwards

  29. LVMYBUCS Says:

If he couldn’t win with this roster he will never win

  30. Please Says:

You wrecked this team for yet another season.

  37. Ncalbucfan Says:

Tom Brady did not win a Super Bowl. The Buccaneers did.
Even before the Super Bowl, in the NFC championship go back and watch Brady throw 3 interceptions (should have been 5) against the Packers and watch the defense stop Rodgers to force 3 and outs. Rodgers actually outplayed Brady, but the Bucs defense was able to make up for Brady’s mistakes.
If the defense didn’t play lights out that day, especially in the fourth quarter, Brady gets blamed for losing that game.

  38. Steve Says:

So we fire everyone that Bowles hired except him.

  39. #1bucsfan Says:

Don’t forget Andy Reid’s chiefs just missed the playoffs. It happens to even the best

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

A total of 10 Bucs coaches were worse than Bowles..land that includes Jon Gruden (barely).

  41. Obvious Says:

As several have already noted, there’s no comparison to Arians history compared to Todd. He won coach of the year with the colts as an interim, won 10 games in ‘13 in a very tough division, won 11 games in ‘14, and 13 games in ‘15 with a conference championship appearance. Again, in a tough division.

If Bowles had accomplished any of that prior to ‘25s implosion, most reasonable people are arguing that he should of course be given more time. But Todd plays in the nfls kiddie pool.

The problem is that he thinks his current Bucs record is an accomplishment rather than a disappointment.

  42. SlyPirate Says:

    WHY THEY DIDN’T FIRE BOWLES

    1. The Glazers gave Bowles a 3 year contract. They still owe him $7 million.
    2. Every NFL team is profitable based on TV contracts. As owners, the Bucs don’t need to win. They simply need to control cost.

    SO …
They keep Bowles, swap staff, and maintain flat salaries = Maximized Profits

    HOWEVER …
I’m sure they are pissed at Licht for that deal. He let Coen leave and kept Bowles. The Glazers have a history of ditching a deadbeat HC for an OC. They would have done this deal in a heartbeat. It was PERFECT TIMING too.

  43. Orange Republic Says:

    BA for OC

  44. 941bucsfan Says:

Hahahaa… some of you hot smart people wished the bucs miss the playoffs, just because you thought that would get bowles fired. Had a better chance of him
Getting fired with a 41-0 beat down from the rams at home in the first round.

  45. Johnny Says:

I say the Bucs can still fire Bowles. Not predicting that they will, just don’t be too shocked if it happens, even though of course it should have happened already. I still haven’t seen any enthusiastic statements about Bowles from the Glazers. Did I just miss it?

  46. BigMacAttack Says:

Alright Coach Bowles, you’re our Coach again so I’m in and supporting you. Jo more mulligans, no more mistakes, let’s get it right. Go Bucs!!!

  48. Warrenfb12 Says:

Maybe Bruce is coming out of retirement to call plays for a year or two

  49. wlliam Says:

hey Ill take rivera as DC over bowles any day

  50. Deeboooo Says:

It’s getting fun watching all y’all’s heads explode. Lol

  51. HC Grover Says:

    LOL Irritable Bowles Syndrome… IBS

  52. Johnny Says:

the Bucs played (and lost) their last game of the 2008 season on Dec 28, 2008, with Jon Gruden as head coach. They did not fire Gruden, on Dec 29. Or Dec 30. Or on NYE.

They did not fire Jon Gruden on New Years Day of 2009. They did not fire him the day after, or the week after.

Almost three weeks after their last game of the 2008 season, they fired their head coach, Jon Gruden, on Jan 16, 2009.

So I think the Glazers may yet fire Todd Bowles.

If I were Todd Bowles, I would not be thinking my job security is 100%.

  53. Bojim Says:

So far they’re firing the right people. Can think of a few others.

  54. TombsEN Says:

    i guess time will tell…

i’d love bowles to rock us a 13-4 season in 2026…not banking on it tho

  57. JohnQCitizen Says:

  58. BucFan1 Says:

F&^K THIS TEAM. Won’t spend another dime on this BS.

  59. gotbbucs Says:

Arians is loyal to his guys, that much we know. How though does a guy who’s coaching tree basically has Todd Bowles, Freddie Kitchens, and Sluggo Leftwich have this much power over an organization?

Bowles is coming back. So it is what it is at this point. I’ll be interested to see which offensive coordinator potential hires want to interview for the job of essentially a lame duck head coach. Best case scenario is probably Zac Robinson.
Defensively, the philosophy is very flawed in my opinion for today’s game, so if Bowles is still planning on doing the same nonsense again, forget about it. I would think by now, assistant coaches would be very hesitant to join the staff on that side of the ball if they have any pride at all in their own opinions if Bowles is still calling the shots.

Bowles honestly is the worst head coach of the buccaneers I’ve ever seen in my life, and I’ve been a fan for over 35 years.

Clearly, you forgot about Lousy Lovie Smith. He was the worst I’ve experienced as a fan for the past 30 years. However, I’m going to be very interested in hearing the stated rationale, as well as nuggets of inside knowledge coming from Ira and the Joes, as to why the Glazers didn’t fire Bowles.

  63. Rickrose Says:

Lame duck season. The lost decade had begun again

    What a joke

  65. Just Saying Says:

Outrigger, that has to be a cruel joke

  68. Just Saying Says:

Harbough said he believed in his coaches and you can fire me. Bowels says it isn’t me and fires all his staff. What a loser. Based on Glazer request to interview Harbough I still don’t think Todd is safe. They just let him be a weasel and fire all his boys. It is his defense that is bottom 3-5 in the league for his whole tenure, but sure keep him and his defense that his players can’t even understand.

  69. Eric Says:

I remember they had promoted Rah to DC then fired GRU and gave Rah the job. That was well after the season.

Just saying they have made moves even more strange so Bowles may not be entirely safe.

Naturally the rah move was a total disaster. Until they lucked into Arians.

The Lovie firing was unexpected also.

These people hired the Rutgers head coach also.

  70. buccintimeforchanges Says:

    We officially hit the iceberg…

  71. Bucsfan2023 Says:

As long as Bowles is the HC and the DC nothing good will happen. 3rd down and 28. The game and playoffs were a done deal if they just make a stand at 3rd down and 28.

  77. Jason` Says:

Bowels is a Mediocre head coach at best, he was handed a team full of talent and they played with no heart, no one went above and beyond. It seemed as if they packed it in after the Bye. The owners should’ve just owned up to the fact that they made a mistake at extending his contract and started over while we have such a young nucleus.

  78. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Drunk Uncle has grown tiresome.

  79. HC Grover Says:

Where will they find anyone willing to work with Bowzo? Oh wait….Lefty?

  80. Hodad Says:

Joe didn’t like my theory. Still the only explanation for keeping Bowles.

  81. Usfbucs Says:

The Bucs are interested in a new HC but they don’t want to change HCs just to change. Word is they called about Harbaugh but he wants to be his own GM and the Bucs said no to that demand supposedly.

  82. K Says:

This is the dumbest possible handling of the situation. Fire literally everyone except for the guy who is in charge and whose phase performed the worst. What an absolute joke. When they fail to win next year, they’re just going to clean house again. Should have done it all the way. Harbaugh would have been the best solution, even if that means parting ways with Licht. We need fresh perspective. Wow

  83. Usedtocould Says:

    Barf

  84. Newbie Says:

So the Bucs are going to clean house with the assistants but keep the HC? What a bunch of BS this is. This is the Titanic captained by Edward Smith. Who in their right mind would want to come here?

  93. Herbiebuc Says:

@lakeland it’s going to be a long off-season this all we going to hear but the min we start back winning hear comes the arm chair qb lol ima say it again the Bucs have the most pathetic fan base!

  94. buc4evr Says:

All you guys saying Bowles is the worst HC in Bucs history are truly clueless. That said, He is a mid type coach that will never get the Bucs to the SB. At least he is firing a lot of dead weight. The hope is that he will also fire the DC and get a new one. lol.

  95. AlstottNumber1 Says:

  96. Derrick Says:

@alstott number 1 you guarantee nothing, gene has called losing seasons before..
Feel free to cheer for another team decisions have been made be a fan or not

  97. Swanee Says:

This decision reflects a continued pattern of poor judgment by ownership and a failure to act in the best interests of the organization, its supporters, and the Tampa Bay community.

Based on observable performance and leadership outcomes, Todd Bowles has not demonstrated the communication skills, motivational leadership, or results reasonably expected of a head coach, nor has he established a sufficient basis to warrant retention for the 2026 season.

The foreseeable consequences of these decisions include continued on-field underperformance and organizational decline. Despite this, ownership appears unwilling to acknowledge or address these risks, resulting in a trajectory that reasonably projects another unsuccessful season.

Tampa Bay supporters are entitled to expect competent leadership and responsible stewardship of the franchise. In response to these ongoing concerns, many fans are likely to reassess their financial commitments, including season tickets and premium seating. I have already elected to discontinue my financial support of the organization.

  98. SB~LV 🏈 Says:

It is what it is now and the fans are stuck with the dysfunctional front office and clueless owners who make decisions by consensus.
This dysfunction has already seeped into the locker room and you are naive if you believe that it can’t reappear at the first tough patch next fall.
This is like boarding a airplane knowing it’s going to have serious mechanical problems and that you probably are not gonna make it!

  99. Wouldn’t pay a single Buc to see this squad Says:

Still have one big, fat, sloppy, uninspiring problem that we didn’t take care of.

  104. ManzielMadness Says:

Lovie Smith is the worst HC in Bucs history, nobody else comes close.

  105. Outrigger Says:

I always laugh when they talk about Bowles masterpiece in the Super Bowl. Let’s not forget that 4 of the 5 starting offensive lineman for the Chiefs (including both their tackles) were out that game. When they were healthy early in the season when we played them they lit up our defense. Tyrek Hll had over 100 yards receiving in the first quarter. Todd sucks and always has.

  106. Tbbucs3 Says:

“ Tom Brady won a SB. Tom did. These people were PASSENGERS.”

Tell me you have Tom Brady posters on your wall without telling me…

Do you Brady stans realize his Pats offense was terrible in 2019 without any help?

  107. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Bowles staying at the helm for 2026 might be Arians’ final “W” as a Buccaneer.’

Or it might be that the Glaziers looked around and determined that at least for this next year they’re better off with the HC they’ve got than they’d be with an unknown.

Looking at all the staff firings that Todd’s made in the last day or two, it seems obvious that he did a heck of a selling job to the Glaziers to keep HIS job. Arians helped more than likely, but I’m confident the Glaziers asked Todd in their evaluation “What’s YOUR plan for fixing this mess?” It’ll be interesting to see if part of HIS plan is to replace HIMSELF as DC.

  108. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Outrigger

Exactly! And if you go back and look at the incredible passes that Mahomes made that were dropped.. things could have been much different.

Got blown out in your last coaching job?

The Bucs have a spot for YOU!

You can either be a Head Coach or Assistant Coach on a Crappy team and fired next year (Please see Raiders, Las Vegas) or you can coach excellent talent and be a Head Coach candidate NEXT year.

    Seems like a unique opportunity!

I have been coming to this site since Greg Schiano was fired

But l never seen this much negativity here before
The childish insults, the stupid rants
And the ones that’s doing it, are not REAL Bucs fans
They are mere instigators, disruptors, bringing nothing positive to the site

They ACTUALLY thought the Glazers were going to fire Bowles
    Now their feelings are hurt

    My advice to them

Joe, the part you’re skipping over is that Todd NEVER had a season with more than 10 wins. He has no precedent of greatness, but he has given plenty examples of an annual swoon, loosing high profile/primetime games, player regression, poor game management….

  126. Deeboooo Says:

Seeing reports that Bowles is not hiring a DC next year

    ………go Bucs?

  127. Orange Republic Says:

Bowles is in the competition committee. If they fired him, the new guy would not be. That stuff matters for an ownership group that likes to be respected by other members of the ownership club.

  128. stpetebucsfan Says:

“Time to sell the team. Glazers can go move to the UK and wreak havoc on their stupid soccer team. Leave the Bucs here and get us an owner that cares about the team and the fans.”

This is what keeps me away. Hyperbole is expected on a Sports blog but the negative hyperbole blasting the Bucs gets me for two reasons. 1.) I’m a Bucs fan
2.) I dislike lazy ignorance as in simply freaking GOOGLE.

Look up top ownership groups in the NFL. I would place a link but it drives the software crazy so I’ll tell you the Glazers are ranked as the 13th most respected ownership in the NFL.

Once the Glazers paid off the mortgage on the team to purchase Man U the Glazers have been EXEMPLARY OWNERS!!! We are freaking lucky. Many of the ownership groups above the Glazers are there because of their far longer history in the league…The Rooney’s, Hunt, and Kraft have been around a lot longer.

My opinion carries no weight, I have no credentials but the guys who do and ranked the Glazers in the top 1/3 of the league had this to say about their decision.

The Glazer family has long been willing to take risks to win championships for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. More than two decades ago, they traded for head coach Jon Gruden, who quickly brought the Bucs a Super Bowl title. Then, the Glazers made a play for Hall of Fame QB Tom Brady, leading to another Lombardi.

Even the post-Brady transition has been handled with aplomb, with Baker Mayfield stepping in as an adequate replacement under center.

Yes, news of Todd Bowles returning as Buccaneers coach has sparked significant fan backlash, with many threatening to cancel season tickets, citing disappointment in his conservative play, game management, and the team’s late-season collapse from a strong start, leading to concerns ownership isn’t prioritizing winning and potentially impacting future sales. Fans express frustration over the decision, fearing a repeat of mediocrity, and feel ownership is out of touch with fan sentiment, potentially hurting season ticket renewals.
    Key Points:
Fan Outrage: Social media is filled with angry fan reactions, with many calling Bowles’ return a “massive mistake” and “insanity” after the team went from 6-2 to missing the playoffs.
Concerns About Winning: Fans feel the Glazer family is prioritizing saving money over winning, leading to an “inferior product” on the field.
Ticket Sales Risk: There are direct comments and concerns that this decision will negatively impact season ticket sales and fan engagement.
Bowles’ Performance: Criticism focuses on his conservative coaching, blown leads, and inability to close out games, despite leading the team to the playoffs in his first two seasons.
Ownership’s Stance: Fans are calling for the Glazers to explain their faith in Bowles, feeling the secrecy only worsens the divide.
In essence, the decision to retain Bowles has created a rift, with fans believing it signals a lack of ambition from ownership and could lead to a significant decline in season ticket holder support for the 2026 season.

  139. Justin Says:

One thing worth noting. I keep reading about our “strong start”. We won game 1 thanks to a reliable kicker (Koo) missing a 40 yarder after TB’s defense let Atlanta march the field for the game-tying kick. We needed a last minute drive to pull off the win against the uber talented NY Jets team. We were pretty lucky to win our first 4 games against some pretty mediocre (or downright bad) opponents. Would Bowles have been fired if our record matched our 6-11 level of play?

  140. SB~LV 🏈 Says:

Hopefully the next OC will be able to step in mid season when Bowels is fired

  141. Josh Says:

I gave up this week on this team. They won’t get a penny from me until they bring home another ring. I’ll tune in when it’s on locally here in Colorado, but I’ve all but checked out. Draft? Who cares. End of the this season… there’s a season? Next year, why even pay attention to anything if you have no faith they can win it all? The owners have already shown me they couldn’t care less. So, I hope Bowles and Baker prove me wrong—but until I see a ring, there not getting anything.

    At this point, I’m out, I’m done, I’m free…
Until they win, they get zero from me.

No time. No attention. No more stress. Check the box score and forget ther REST!!

  143. Rod Munch Says:

Buccaneers fans are struggling, collectively speaking, to understand why Team Glazer retained a head coach who oversaw an implosion during his fourth season captaining the pirate ship.

    —–

It wasn’t Todd that imploded, it was Baker Mayfield who last the 4 games in a row that knocked the Bucs out.

Final 6 games, defense was ranked 10th in points against
Final 6 games, offense was ranked 26th in points scored

If Baker wasn’t terrible in those games, the Bucs easily make the playoffs, finish with 12 wins.

  144. Stat guy Says:

  148. Ben Says:

This difference is Bowles cant even dominate a crap division with one of the best offemses in football. Thats what Coen brought to this team and Bowles did Bowles things and again kept it close. This is why OCs leave. Ben Johnson didnt leave Campbell righ away depsite offers. Bowles is a liabiltiy and its only going to get worse for the Bucs. Therr is no coming back. This is a 12 win team being undercoached into mediocre seasons in a very $hit division. Keeping Bowles is malpractice by the Glazers, everyone can see it.

  149. Oneilbuc Says:

    Go get Carson Bect!!

  150. Ben Says:

The decision to keep Bowles still doesnt add up for me. The Glazers see what we see, how does any of this make sense? The only thing I can put my finger on why they would keep him is money. Otherwise, there is just too many issues with Todd including outside of Xs and Os. He just cant motivate, adjust, make hard decisions that will benefit the team, plays scared, cant develop players, and loses way too much in primetime in embarrassing fashion to backnup qbs or subpar teams. Id fire him just based on my last point. This team should be a 12 win team in a sh$t division. But Bowles does Bowles things and we get 8-9 wins. This isnt good enough in any ofher division, why should it be here with the rest of the South getting bettee. Please help me understand this decision. This is malpractice!!!
