Coach Calijah Kancey

Suggestion keys defense.

Did the Bucs win the game Saturday over the Stinking Panthers thanks to a suggestion from defensive tackle Calijah Kancey? Well, that’s what Todd Bowles thinks.

Apprently, last week Kancey went to Bowles to ask a favor. Per Bowles, Kancey felt the Bucs defense needed to practice defending a runaround quarterback. Midget Stinking Panthers QB Bryce Young is mobile and can (at times) hurt teams with his arm.

So Kancey asked Bowles if practice squad receiver Garrett Greene could play quarterback in practice and just focus on boots. Bowles agreed.

It was an easy role to play for Garrett. Why? Because Greene played 45 games at West Virginia at quarterback.

“Greene, our receiver — our practice squad receiver — did a heck of a job playing Bryce Young as quarterback and ran those guys around so we’d try to hustle to the ball — Kancey’s recommendation, Bowles said.”

So how did Young do when he tried to run the ball? He finished Saturday’s game with a negative-one yard rushing total. (Yes, Joe knows Young doesn’t scramble for much yardage, but he does move around and extend plays.)

Guess it pays to have a quarterback turned receiver on the practice squad.

Is Kancey trying to get a coaching job when his playing days are over?

Of course Todd and his staff didn’t think of that idea!!! They don’t think abot how to stop the other team much! Or how to prepare for the next game much. They just think about the excuses for the team losing games they should win.

Of course Todd and his staff didn’t think of that idea!!!

You could also read it as the staff is open to hearing suggestions from players.

But yeah, no idea why they didn’t think of it – you got a mobile college QB on the roster, why not use him in practice in a way that helps your defense.

Irritable Bowel needs all the intelligent people he can take credit from!

  5. Stallworth Says:

When players start telling coaches how they should be practicing that is when you know your coaching staff is inept and shouldn’t be coaching in the NFL.

  6. Hogslyr Says:

It’s pretty bad when you have to have a player tell the coach how to coach! PATHETIC!
    Fire Bowels and his staff!

  7. Aqualung Says:

Since we have neither a head coach nor a defensive coordinator, of course Kancey had to make the suggestion.

What the hell does the so called genius do to plan practice? Nevermind, I just had to start drinking again. A lot.

    Arrrggghhhh.

  8. Let em bake Says:

I give bowels credit for giving cancey credit. He knew how this could be spun. A mediocre coach , a good man.

  9. MadMax Says:

Cool story, great idea. Now can we have the TE’s and wideouts dress in camouflage and be invisible? Thats todd’s D, players finding the open spot on the field, covering invisible men….but hey, whatever works.

So we won by 2 points and now have to root for the friggin aints tomorrow….wow. Whatever it takes i guess….

this pains me but, WHO DAT?

I would love to know why Bowels didn’t try new things before this weekend, get creative? I don’t understand Bowels.. good dude who is a good defensive coordinator but a ass head coach, I would have loved to have a DC and let Bowels just be the head coach, but what do I know..

  11. Tony Says:

    @Yusef

That’s because he’s stubborn & I think the players are tired of it now, too!

  12. Tony Says:

They need an AI version of Monte Kiffin to run the D.

And an AI version of Coen.

In fact all offseason I campaigned for the Bucs to replace Coen with a ChatGPT model of him, and just have Grizz sit in the box, insert the down and distance and score, etc, and let it tell you what Coen would have done. I know for certain that the AI would have done a much better job than Grizz, because it would just parrot what Coen did.

Fire bowles and give calijah ” booger mcfarland – always injured missing half the season ” kancey a raise.

Bowles is tone deaf. When you have a losing record and go on record stating you don’t know what more to do, that is really bad look. Then, to go on record about CK’s idea, it confirms to me Bowles is not a defensive strategist, he just calls plays. The results show that. Then, I recall Tom Brady’s weekly notebook on how to attack the opposing team’s defense. When a player outworks a HC/DC, it is telling.

Well at least Dean didn’t hurt us yesterday.

  18. Todd Says:

Garret Greene should have been active for some games this year.

  19. HC Grover Says:

    Simple. Smart Football. It worked.

  20. Buckit Says:

Todd: Agree that Greene should have been active for some games this season. He looked good in pre-season as a punt returner and WR. But maybe the Bucs could consider him as a back-up QB.

  21. BucaneroJim Says:

Agree, Greene seems to have potential.

  22. Eckwood Says:

Bowles and his staff need lottsa help !! Tom Moore at his age is prob the sharpest of the group and he is prob a shell of what he once was !!

  23. Daniel Z Says:

Jesus Christ. I knew Bowles wasn’t good at his job, but if this is true, he should probably be in an assisted living facility. How could a “defensive guru” not have his team practice for the team they’re playing??? Just straight-up incompetence.

  24. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Tye a great new name suggestion for our head coach!!! I.B.S. Idiotic Bowle Syndrome or I.B.M. Irritating Bowle Movement. I’m sure fans can come up with some really great ones

  25. Fred Says:

If Bowles stays, he needs to hire much younger coaches. This is a reason I think Josh should stay, but only if he’s Baker-approved. Our coaches need to be younger. Especially the defensive side.
