How bout those Buccaneers!
They just finished this sad regular season with a “W” and an 8-9 record, polishing off a feisty but talent-challenged Panthers team.
Defense ruled the day. There was energy and fire for a change, and some plays made.
Carolina was 1-for-8 on third downs and ran for only 19 yards all game. That’s damn hard for any defense to accomplish.
It felt like a changing of the guard as Bucs starting outside cornerbacks Jamel Dean and Zyon McCollum out of the game injured. Rookies Jacob Parrish and Benjamin Morrison had their challenges but did just enough — and got great experience. Parrish’s second-quarter interception at midfield was huge and led to the second of three field goals on the day for Chase McLaughlin.
Joe’s not sure what the Bucs proved today beyond showing they have a pulse, but a win is a win — and it feels good.
Tight end Cade Otton made his case for Bucs MVP since the bye week with 7 catches for 94 yards a his first touchdown of the season — on a day that saw Chris Godwin and Mike Evans combine for only 3 targets against a shaky Panthers defense.
Major love for Lavonte David recovering a key fumble late in the game. What a special moment if that indeed was the final home game of his storied career.
Officials also helped the Bucs today, which was a welcome change.
Baker Mayfield played with a ton of grit, and the Bucs actually won a game when Mayfield threw an interception! That’s something he’s done in each of the past five games.
Now it’s on to Sunday. If the slimy Saints beat the Falcons in their 1 o’clock game, then the Bucs will go to the playoffs. If the Falcons win, the historic collapse of this sad season is complete.
Todd Bowles? He avoided the Grim Reaper for now.

That game was the perfect encapsulation of how garbage this division is. Bucs really don’t have any excuse despite the injuries. The defense has been bad all season. This is one of the few times they shined.

The defense actually played today. Not certain if it was Kancey or the CB’s that made a somewhat noticeable difference. Still too many wide open receivers for my taste, but they are rookies. The offense…..WEAK! Way too much talent to be this lackluster. Coaching same ol’ same ol’. Playing for 3……. pathetic!

Starting to come together Kancy made this defense look a lot better today. I think we get in and the Saints game will be fixed by the NFL. Once again Munch the guards stunk which makes Baker look worse than he actually is. They blocked somewhat okay running at least but are turnstiles in pass protection. You can pretend all you like that Baker is unpressured but he has people ALL OVER HIM on almost every single pass play! The guards get shoved into his lap.

Bucs cant win with an offensive game plan like we saw today. Bucs were lucky the weather was bad and the defense held up. Not using our receivers was just down right stupid especially since they were getting open down field. Just could not believe the play calling.

It would really show how lame the “fans” are on here if firing Bowles won. Defense played well today with the locker room cancers out of the game. Obviously Dean and McCollum are 2 of them. Parish and Morrison weren’t perfect but they did some good things. Not sure where the safety was on that deep pass. Really late getting there, that’s for sure!

The defense held the Panthers to 14 points, got 3 turnovers, and overcame an awful INT by Baker who gave the Panthers the ball at the Bucs 20.
Yeah, but Baker won it with his 16 points… LOL!
Even HOF Warren Sapp, with that all-time great Bucs defense, begged the offense to score 17 points a game, and that was before the modern day point inflation. But yeah, Baker won it.
Anywho, just glad we won. If the Bucs get in, they’re not going to face another team nearly as bad as the Panthers and Baker will have to do more than not screw up to win, so lets hope he shows up. I will say he mostly looked better today, outside that awful INT, but he wasn’t horrendously bad like he’s been the last 4 games – so at least that was encouraging.

This offense is broken. There are almost 0 designed plays pass that actually work. No 3 step drop backs. No slants. No plays attacking the short middle of the field. Nearly every pass Baker completes is a broken play scramble

Good point Rod Munch about the D holding to 14 points. But Attaboy also makes a good point about Baker carrying the game. Other than the interception in the pouring down rain. Baker played a great game as well. That was definitely a mud game for sure !! Making first downs late in the game is all it takes if you’re leading, and that last first down to Cade was brilliant!!

I don’t consider the rain and excuse for Carolina. Both teams played in the same conditions. No more than weather is a factor when we play in cold freezing temperatures. Both teams played in it. Most players in college played in it before they came to the NFL at times.

The bar is set incredibly low if we’re claiming Baker carried the game. I thought he mostly played well – and the rain? Come on, that had nothing to do with it, Baker flat out threw a terrible ball against a basic zone defense – meanwhile he had Evans open on his right, or could have taken a deep shot, but the throw he made was awful. But again, Baker looked the best he’s looked in 2 months, that’s a very good sign if the Bucs get into the playoffs. The only way they win is if Baker gets hot, the team was built to win on offense, and they’re going to need 30+ to win in the playoffs.

Rod maybe carried the team is a poor choice of words. How about Baker lead the Bucs to a victory on a rain soaked, soggy, football field tonight. He handed the ball off a lot, but when he needed to he extended drives with passes and QB scrambles. Baker did what he had to do to make sure this was a win for the Bucs.
Also, I sure hope you are right about the Saints beating the Falcons. I’m counting on that !!

What else can explain Baker’s continued drop backs and scrambling? It’s been awful since the bye. Defenses have game planned and taken away his strong point (quick release) and Grizzard or someone on this staff hasn’t adapted to counter. This team’s receivers are too good to not be open. Either Grizzard is in over his head or there’s a power struggle through Bowles not trusting him to open the offense or Bowles is wanting to prove his defense can win games so he’s not letting the offense do their thing. Something must change. This was a spirited effort but not good enough. We deserve better.

If the Bucs retain both Lickt and Bowles, they WILL LOSE most all of their Orlando Area Fanbase to the JAGS. Hell, they already have. I was just up in Lake Mary for about 4-days (3-nights) before the holidays, & did not see a Bucs hat or any merch ONE. But, did see several JAGS and MAGIC garb. Mostly, people under 40 but it’ll only be a matter of time, for the rest to follow.
