Booger McFarland: “Good For Todd Bowles”

January 8th, 2026

Salutes Bucs’ move.

This surprised Joe.

For those who follow former Bucs defensive tackle and current ESPN talking head Booger McFarland, he hasn’t exactly been happy with how the Bucs’ fortunes have gone the past few months.

Booger had biting comments about the Bucs. And he wasn’t wrong one bit.

So yesterday in the wake of a report that Team Glazer decided to retain Bucs coach Todd Bowles, Booger took to Twitter to salute the Bucs for a wise move.

Good for Todd Bowles. He deserves to be back. Jason Has to get him some edge rushers and another LB. The young secondary is promising but they need pressure on the passer Trade for Maxx Crosby Draft one In 1st round Great year for edge guys

Booger is preaching to the choir about an edge rush. Joe is all for it. Problem is, drafting an edge rusher is a waste of time for Bowles, Joe is convinced, because he screws with these guys heads as rookies.

YaYa Diaby is an OK edge guy, much more of a No. 2 to complement a beast on the other side. YaYa’s season-high was 7.5 sacks as a rookie in 2023. Diaby, along with Bowles himself and several current and former edge rusher teammates, have spoken openly about what a huge learning curve Bowles’ defense is for edge rushers. It should be that complex, and it’s not like Bowles has developed edge rushers.

Now if the Bucs bring in a defensive coordinator, Joe’s all for drafting an edge rusher in the first round so long as the new guy has autonomy to run his defense.

And hopefully if the Bucs bring in a new defensive coordinator, he will have a documented ability to develop and edge rush, and an established position coach to bring with him to Tampa Bay.

the delusion of this man to think that we keep our first round pick if we trade for crosby like my god he’s got rocks for brains.

  2. Marine Buc Says:

    Booger is a total IDIOT…

“Trade for Maxx Crosby Draft one In 1st round Great year for edge guys”

How are the Bucs going to trade for Maxx Crosby?

    Duh!

We won’t have any 1st round draft picks if we trade for Crosby you dumb, stupid, moronic, idiot!

Seriously – how does this goofball get paid for this?

  3. johnnythemoon Says:

Yea Trade for Crosby and keep first round pik …sure Booger.

  4. Chris Says:

We all know why certain people want and like Bowles.

  5. Marine Buc Says:

I’m fine for trading for Crosby (BTW) then I would draft an ILB in round #2 and #3…

  6. Knothead71 Says:

What sticks out to me is that no one that the Bucs have drafted has been a good edge rusher.
Kinda seems like this is more of a system/scheme issue than a player issue.
I would be interested in seeing what YaYa could do with a competent DC calling the plays.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Booger….maybe they’ll even give us a pick to take him

  8. SteveK Says:

I agree with booger’s assessment on the need for edge rushers.

    Joe,

Thanks for pointing out that Yaya is a good #2! We need an ace!

  9. Lakeland Says:

    Chris,

You mean like 5 playoff appearances in Bowles 7 seasons here

Can you name someone who have done better

    Mr Genius

  10. Davenport Says:

    Great for Bowles

Terrible for anyone who wants this team to be anything better than mediocre.

Glazers talk about a commitment to winning – see the Prime series In reality, they’ll happily accept failure.

  11. Fanofdabucs Says:

“He deserves to be back” Anyone who kept reading or listening after that…

  12. Colin in Canada Says:

I agree that a MaxX Crosby calibre edge rusher would really help this defence. That’s kind of obvious but it’s like we’re one player away.

  13. Fanofdabucs Says:

Lakeland, the land of of moronic takes.

  14. FortMyersDave Says:

I doubt if Bowles agreed to give up play calling, dude is too arrogant. If Bowles hired a play calling DC, my fear is that he would do exactly the same thing Dan Campbell did with his OC this year, take over play calling. In Campbell’s case it was warranted but to be honest, in Bowles case he will do it to feed hie ego. Trading for Maxx Crosby will be pricey, probably more that the first rounder at #15. Spyteck will want much more than that and I still do not trust Bowles. Crosby probably cannot cover running backs and TEs in the flat much better than Diaby, it is not his strength. Bowles might have conned the Glazers but he is not going to change his schemes any more than a leopard can change its spots.

Also, off topic, but the launching of the Man U manager now leaves Man U owing about $40 million to ex coaches, could that have impacted the Glazers’ choice to retain Bowles, to save coin? They still have a big investment in Man U, they own majority voting power on its board and own 49% of the club…….

  15. Lakeland Says:

Why Shaq Barrett can get 19.5 sacks in a season in Bowles defense

But others are struggling to get 3 sacks
Even Devin White got 9 sacks from the ILB position
    JPP got 9.5 sacks
Shaq Barrett had another season with 10 sacks

At some point these players has to be held accountable
It’s not the system, it’s the players in the system

And the local Bay Area media are pacifying these players

Get some players here that can ACTUALLY play football.

  16. miken Says:

Booger must have spent too much time watching college football

  17. CCHead Says:

Trade for Crosby and have him drop in coverage. Genius. Boog is now a corporate guy with ESPN and toes the company line. Funny how he has changed. When he was on the radio here with Duemig he actually held coaches accountable.

  18. Davenport Says:

Lakeland – Andy Reid for one, but is making the playoffs and losing really the goal?

Clearly, you’re happy with failure. Most everyone else is chasing championships.

  19. DJR589 Says:

I ask again, what quality coaches and coordinators are going to want to work for Bowles when his job security hanging by a thread??!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Henry Says:

Ive got better things to do than watch this dumpster fire for the next 12 months. I literally chose to bust up some concrete with a jack hammer instead of watching the Bucs last Saturday. Cant stand the product. Its more entertaining watching lefty DEM protesters making fools of themselves and getting shot.

  21. Farmer Says:

We could have drafted Maxx Crosby and he would have 5 sacks per year in Bowles defense.

I’m fully confident in the opinion that Licht is drafting the right guys and Bowles is just using them wrong. Consistency is the key to success and when you’re constantly disrupting your own players by having them do ridiculous stunts (like dropping god damn Vita Vea into coverage), it removes all consistency.

  22. heyjude Says:

Yes to Crosby. My only concerns are his knee, which they say the surgery was 100%, and that Dallas and other teams are lining up for him. Go Bucs!

  23. Lakeland Says:

This franchise went 13 year CONSECUTIVE seasons without an playoff appearance

Todd Bowles was the DC of the team that ENDED the drought
And they ended it with a Super Bowl victory
And they been to the playoffs in 5 of Bowles seasons here

And you people are calling him a FAILURE
Do you people even know the definition of FAILURE

  24. Farmer Says:

    @Lakeland

Todd Bowles was the head coach for Brady’s only losing season of his career
Todd Bowles won the worst division in football 3 years in a row and only did so in week 17, by the skin of his teeth for both 2023 & 2024.

Bowles is the definition of mediocre, the only thing worse than failing is being so afraid to fail that you don’t even try and that’s exactly what we are doing.

  25. Todd Says:

I know the definition of Insanity

Doing the same thing over and over , but expecting a different result.

  26. jcscycles Says:

It’s common to swap picks in a trade.

  27. Lakeland Says:

Todd Bowles was the DC that beat Rodgers, Brees, Mahomes
In 3 consecutive weeks to win the Super Bowl

    When you tell the story
    Tell the WHOLE story

  28. TampaTown Says:

    We’ll see 🙄

  29. Bradinator Says:

If they get a REAL D coordinator (Schwartz from Clev for example) that brings REAL db coaches, maybe I’ll drink some Kool-Aid. If Bowles and the same flunkies are running the D next year, we’ll regress. BTW will someone please get the Special teams guy out of the building and preferably out of the state altogether?! Worst special teams ever last season. Worst!!

  30. Bucs3 Says:

    Surprise Boogie backs Bowles

    WHY??

The progress Bowles made NOPE TEAM IS WORSE NOT BETTER

THE playoffs games Bowles has won NOPE ONLY ONE ( In his career)

The Defensive Guru Made a Great defensive NOPE HORRIBLE

SO WHY ??? I wonder and may have an idea

  31. JA Says:

Some here, like Lakeland, the Glazers, Booger and Todd Bowles, feel that being a division winner with a near .500 record for the past few years is a badge of honor that should be duly rewarded. And being one and done in the playoffs is great!
Others look around the league and see teams with far better records that fail to make the playoffs, and they want their Bucs to get better with a new head coach. Polls suggest this number to be nine in ten fans.
So, nine in ten fans are unhappy with the team’s direction, but not the aforementioned first sentence four. They also see the Panthers, Saints and Falcons getting better while the Bucs are beginning to regress from average to poor.
In the NFL, most teams, through talent and coaching, are given a window to succeed. The Bucs window, due to aging talent and failure to reload it with new talent, was closing.
But the extension of Bowles for at least another year took that window and slammed it shut, at least in the mind of the 90 percenters and me.
Bad decision, Glazers. You’ve not only alienated your fan base, you’ve driven many of them away. Worse yet, it makes no sense to do so.
If you had confidence in your own abilities and/or Jason Licht to find a better coach I’m guess you would put that confidence into play??
As Mr. Spock would say, “Sirs, your decision to maintain the status quo was illogical.”

  32. Lakeland Says:

    Aaron Rogers
    Drew Brees
    Patrick Mahomes

Three future 1st ballot Hall of Famers
It was Todd Bowles defense that beat them in consecutive weeks

Give credit when credit is due

We wouldn’t have won a Super Bowl without Bowles defense
Against Green Bay in the playoffs leading to the Super Bowl
How many INTS did Tom Brady throw?????

    And who bailed him out?

  33. Bucs3 Says:

    Lakeland

Why do you talk about Bowles as a DC ???

Bowles is the HC talk about his accomplishments as HC.

HE HAS BEEN TO PLAYOFFS only because he coaches in a soft division

WON NOTHING IN PLAYOFFS ( one playoff game doesn’t count)

TEAM IS NOT BETTER ( oh injuries WAIT every team dealt with injuries)

    Bowles Fan

  34. Lakeland Says:

    “””” I meant Tom Brady 3 INTS”””””

  35. DS Says:

    Did Grizzard get fired ?

  36. Steven007 Says:

Just saw a report that griz was let go. Adam schefter.

  37. Simeon4HOF Says:

    Fired Grizz

  38. Simeon4HOF Says:

That’s a start. Now Special teams and then the DC

  39. Mhystc Says:

Interview Brain flores for DC! hes a free agent. let him run the defense.

  40. SteveK Says:

Grizzard was the fall guy, better get an experienced, serious upgrade! Go Bucs!

Lol, make a play for Stefanski and let him know if it goes south he will promoted to HC.

  41. Simeon4HOF Says:

Guess Grizz didnt have a colossal buyout contact with wet ink

  42. idiaznet Says:

I know everyone has a take on this. But from what I have seen, the issue is that the D-line and edge-rushing coaches are not really teaching fundamentals very well. If a player doesn’t already have all the tools, then nothing new is being taught. I don’t see any moves by the whole line other than power rushing moves and stunts? Where are the ghost/swim moves? Where are the linemen setups? Where are the dip and rip moves? There is so much more than just pushing your guy back. Till that is fixed, drafting a player is useless. They also need to be trained for fake snap counts to prevent offsides. They need better position coaching overall!!

  43. Confido75 Says:

Bowles is the coach, so my only question now is, “what are you going to do to prepare this team for success next year?”. They need a DC, maybe an OC and definitely a ST coach. Bowles needs to lead and be a CEO next season. Nothing more, nothing less. Also, get the guy the talent needed through FA and the draft and make damn sure these guys are in the right condition to endure an NFL season. There are a lot of pissed off veterans in that locker room that understand this and have the self-discipline needed to win. However, the rest of the team needs to a wake up call. Root out the bad actors and get rid of them. One last thing for Todd, stop smiling like a goon on the sideline when a player makes a bad decision during a game. Is there an HR rep standing behind you or something? If there is anything you should of learned from Bruce Arians is to make damn sure the player is aware what they did is not acceptable!

  44. TexasBuc 1776 Says:

Lakeland, since you have a man crush on TB we understand you’re blinded by lust.

We’ll give him credit for the Super Bowl season, since then it’s been a steady decline across most metrics. His system is outdated, he plays not to lose, uses the same lame excuses, and has overseen a historic meltdown against weak opponents this year in a division that sucks. Malcome is rolling over in his grave.

  45. Popmike66 Says:

Lakeland I agree with you, I don’t understand that it’s Bowles defense the with developing an edge rusher. As you said S Barrett was great and I am not sure but, JPP may have played a year in Bowles defense I may be wrong but I think it’s the position coaches who we need to take a closer look at

  46. ElioT Says:

    Grimace is a moron.

Yeah Toad deserves to be back cause he’s black.

  47. Jmarkbuc Says:

What good is an edge rusher 25 yards downfield on coverage?

The problem is Bowles and his dumb azz defense.

  48. Jmarkbuc Says:

    OC fired.

Wake me when they fire the DC.

  49. Brooks Says:

    Who cares

  50. D-Rome Says:

Problem is, drafting an edge rusher is a waste of time for Bowles, Joe is convinced, because he screws with these guys heads as rookies.

Uh huh. How has Joe Tryon-Shoyinka done in Chicago? They’ve moved him to DE and DL. Zero sacks.

What you call “screws with these guys heads” I call “setting expectations to be a defensive player in the NFL.” Shaq Barrett and JPP didn’t have problems producing under Todd Bowles.

My point is, the GM needs to be scrutinized as well.

  51. MadMax Says:

Great for us you mean….he’s gonna lead us into a top 5 pick in the 2027 draft. Thats why we need to trade down at least 3 times this year and accumulate some decent 2nd stringers.

  52. ElioT Says:

The problem is Toad isn’t a horrible head coach, he’s the definition of average, so the Bucs will continue to have average draft positions unless Jason makes a move which he won’t do.

Even Stevie Wonder can tell drastic change is needed but it won’t happen

  53. HC Grover Says:

    Hey Hey The Yuccaneers. Uggh

  54. Bojim Says:

    DC please.

  55. BakerFan Says:

This is not Rocket Surgery or Brain Science…. Hire competent people to straighten out the Head Coach / GM mess that they have created. Did I get something messed up on this, Glazer Fever is spreading.

  56. Conte Piscatelli Says:

It’s either trade for Crosby or draft one in the first round, doesn’t really matter since they will be dropping in coverage on most passing downs

  57. Pewter Power Says:

Bowles needs 2 high priced veteran edge rushers because half way through the season once his defense gets figured out AGAIN, the only thing that’ll prevent a collapse is pass rushers who weren’t coached by him.

  58. BigZ Says:

Clearly he doesn’t understand the draft or trades. Yeah, trade for Maxx and draft an edge in round one. What year? 2028, because if they trade for Maxx they won’t have ones for a couple of years.

I really like UMs Mesidor, he a round 2 guy.

Last year was the year for Maxx, so we had a say in a sign and trade and we had him this year.
Day late and dollar short.. I’d rather keep our picks this year. Unload that ridiculous AWJ contract. Downs is a baller, day one starter. He’ll be there at 15, use the AWJ money for a FA ILB, like Nakobi Dean. I’m in on a trade for Nate Herbig, dude is relentless OLB for Pittsburgh and doesn’t play much. Watch him this weekend. Mesidor round 2. There two edges and a better safety and contract. Team stays young too.

  59. Gipper Says:

You may have heard that most football players either ex or current are not overly bright. Before they are allowed to comment they should have at least a 25 on the Wonderlic test. Might not be a bad idea for posters here. If the Joe’s imposed that rule, posting traffic would decline by about 90%.

  60. Coburn Says:

I think Bowles doesn’t prioritize edge guys who cAn actually rush the passer well. He prioritizes big guys who can set the edge like Diaby and Anthony Nelson. Haasom Reddick was the first smaller speedy edge guy we have had. I think licht is willing to get edge guys, but I don’t think Bowles prioritizes the right attributes in them and licht isn’t just going to go against Bowles and pick a guy he doesn’t want

  61. SlyPirate Says:

    DJR589 Says:

I ask again, what quality coaches and coordinators are going to want to work for Bowles when his job security hanging by a thread??!!!!!!!!!!!

    ^^^^^^^^^

The Bucs OC is the best job in the NFL

    1) FASTTRACK. Two OCs got promoted to HC after one year with the Bucs. Bowles sucks so badly that any OC that is successful is obviously great. Canales and Coen would have had to prove themselves for years, otherwise.

    2) ONE-YEAR AWAY. Our next OC is getting a one-year audition for HC. Bowles got a one-year stay of execution. A good OC is the natural promotion to the next HC. It’s Licht’s MO. Who took over for our last Bowles (Lovie)?

  62. NDog is an Idiot Says:

Good for Me finally. I’ve got at least 2026 to buy no tickets and no Merchandise. Finally get to save some extra Cash

  63. Rod Stewart Says:

Wake up Glazers I think I have something to say to you

  64. Brandon Says:

You idiots think 30+ year old Crosby, his cap crippling contract, and coming off a season ending injury is gonna cost us a 1st round pick? Careful who you insult… it’s easy to see who the idiots are.

That was 5 years ago with a Bruce Arians Offense. That doesn’t happen without Brady. What happened the following year when the Bucs tried to run it back? 45 seconds of soft prevent nothing zone and we lost to the Rams. That was the beginning of the end…. Might be in the middle of this book, but the ending isn’t going to be good. Just imo

  66. Lefty Says:

Joe, please add a feature to block individual posters that pollute this board. Opposing views are fine, but it often gets to the point of ridiculous.

  67. One of those Gator Bois Says:

So Bowles says he’s gonna be back for 2026?

Question is – “What do the Glazers and Jason Licht Say?”

They are clearly exploring available options. If they can’t find anyone better I’m sure he stays, but I haven’t seen any official anouncement from the Team that says he’s 100% safe. If he was staying and intended on giving it his all to win why is his buddy the Special Teams coach still here. If he does stay, please oh please Jason make him hire a DC. I never want to se Ya YA or Vita Vea in pass coverage again. As it is we’re headed for OC #4 in four years a new Special Teams coach #2 in two years and probably an entirely new defensive staff. they’re going to need to install revolving doors at the entrance to One Buc Palace pretty soon.

  68. Teacherman Says:

We need an elite DE to replace Hall.

Hall has never adequately replaced William Gholston.

Gholston was a beast in this defense.

    Hall has been SOFT!

We need an elite DE and an elite OLB.

And we need an elite NT to rotate with Vea.

And we need an elite MLB.

And we need to practice faster!

Our team looked slow and weak all year!

I think the walk throughs also made us susceptible to injuries!

Practice like Lynch and Sapp for Gods sake!

  69. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Not too many people like Booger McFarland would ever day anything derogatory about Bowles, his opinions mean nothing. Probably said nothing bad about McGlaughlin either

  70. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

What this board needs is for the fanbois to be blocked then the quality of this board would go back up.

  71. ERIC Says:

When we head good edge rushers, we won the Superbowl and went 13-4 the next year. Let’s not forget that, and it was with Bowles defense. And I don’t want to hear about the last play against the Rams, the year after the Superbowl. We all know it was a busted play by Winfield, which has been a common occurrence as of late (when he wasn’t hurt). Spend some money/draft picks and get some edge help and all will be good on the defense side.

  72. unbelievable Says:

“Jason has to get him some edge rushers”

Why? He doesn’t know how to use them.

  73. Dlavid Says:

So all the firings going on today at One Buc Place but the big Boss stays …. This reeks of s*** Glazers !!

  74. BuccoDav Says:

Why acquire edge rushers if you are going to drop them into coverage?

  75. Will Says:

Who knows with Bowles srewy, and pathetic calls that every coach knows and every player busts up

  76. Bucsfan951 Says:

“Trade for Maxx Crosby Draft one In 1st round Great year for edge guys”

Booger been hitting the booger sugar too hard if he thinks it won’t take a first for Max.
