Baker Mayfield Must “Take Some Ownership”

January 25th, 2026

What’s next for the Buccaneers offense with Zac Robinson taking over from fired fall guy Josh Grizzard at offensive coordiantor?

A guy who knows Robinson well has an answer.

Joe’s referring retired QB Brian Hoyer. He was a teammate of Robinson’s on the Belicheats when New England made Robinson a seventh-round pick quarterback in 2010.

Now a host on SiriusXM NFL Radio after last playing for the Raiders in 2023, Hoyer talked about liking the Bucs hire of Robinson and how it’s time for Robinson and Mayfield to spend a lot of time crafting the offense — together.

Hoyer dove into how Mayfield is a veteran with extensive experience in a Robinson-style system. Per Hoyer, it’s time for Mayfield to “take some ownership” of the offense because he knows exactly what he likes and doesn’t like as an eighth-year quarterback.

More rollouts next season would be good for Mayfield, says Hoyer, who claims Mayfield is an excellent West Coast-style quarterback. And that West Coast system is at the root of the Sean McVay tree from which Robinson is a branch.

Joe’s in favor of Mayfield getting heavy-handed with the offense. But that can be a slippery slope.

Bucs fans saw what happened in 2022 when Tom Brady basically was co-offensive coordinator with Byron Leftwich. The Bucs averaged just 18.4 points per game, one point more than when Josh McCown and Mike Glennon were under center in 2014.

Cant wait for 2027 draft, new coach new qb, well a lot of new players probably. Lets go Bucs!!!!!!

  2. stucbuc Says:

Who ever says coaching doesn’t matter……patriots losers last year….new coach and aggressive GMing…….Super Bowl bound this year. Amazing. Let’s hope JL and TB get their 💩 together.

  3. HC Grover Says:

    Yada Yada Yada

  4. Let ‘em bake Says:

Roll outs. Naked boot legs. Been sayin it for 3 years. That’ll put baker in his wheelhouse.

  5. Lakeland Says:

Baker Mayfield will be alright this year
The Bucs will be alright this year also

A lot of garbage players will be gone
And a lot of new faces will be in Tampa
That’s what I’m looking forward to most, new players
The key to this off-season, will be Free Agency
We need to find a few starters in free agency

We need to find a few starters from the draft
I’m excited for this year, l can’t wait
I know we will be clicking on all cylinders

A healthy O-Line, an experienced playcaller, WR depth
A better run game, and better depth

I’m predicting that Baker Mayfield will earn himself a bag 💰💰💰

  6. Rod Munch Says:

Didn’t we hear all of this last year? How Baker gave Grizz his stamp of approval, would be more involved?

Of course you want Baker giving input on what he likes, and what he’s seeing, etc. But it’s the coaches job to take that input and then compare it to the output when putting together gameplans.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

BTW, the idea that Brady was co-OC in 2022 is just ridiculous. He made one suggestion at the end of the Rams game, here he wanted to change the call, and Leftwich agreed, and the Bucs won the game because of it. Brady was so thrilled by that call, it really stood out, way more than any other TD I remember – and didn’t even he say it was his first time suggesting a play?

Brady was a robot, put on the field to run whatever he was given the most efficient way possible, and there’s no way he’s sitting in the offices all week saying, “lets open up the game by running up the middle then throwing a 2nd down screen pass for the 9th week in a row.”

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Lakeland, I wouldn’t count on a lot of free agents.

    ——–

If Baker was ‘hurt’ and that’s why he fell off a cliff, and he can stay healthy, then I agree – the Bucs will be alright.

However the rest of the NFC South isn’t going to be the pushover it’s been. In particular the Saints are, I think, going to be really good. Last offseason I said the Panthers were going to be good – and actually I think they will fall off a bit from this season. But the Saints, I could see them jumping to 9 or 10 wins.

But if Baker is ‘healthy’ — and Bowles drops the zone garbage crap, the Bucs should be in the running yet again.

  10. Popmike66 Says:

I think Mayfield and Robinson will work hard this off season and put together a good offense. One reason is Mayfield still have a few questions to answer about his play so I think he will work hard to clear the air and contract time is also coming up

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Personally, I’m not sold on Robinson. He did fail at his last job. But I’m also one for earned redemption.

  12. Pewter Power Says:

Licht is too cowardly to put all his chips on the table in the draft for a quarterback or edge rusher and we have too many offensive weapons even Bowles couldn’t screw out up that much and get a top 5 pick.

Adam Schefter reported we lost Brian Picucci to Jacksonville so that’s another coach Zac Robinson has to replace. Like every other player with some talent, Baker will ball out for a big payday

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m not holding my breath on that one, lol

  14. What it is Says:

What BM6 doesn’t like is playing hurt behind a line that can’t protect him.

  15. Stpetematt Says:

Out of 22 starters, we need at least 10 new ones. Mostly on defense. So free agency and probably trading down in the draft is essential. Only take players with value at your draft picks. If there’s nobody available in the positions of need that represent value, trade down. Some players we can get in the 3rd and 4th rounds could be huge values like guards and safeties that can really round out the team.

  16. HC Grover Says:

Nahhhh. Here come the good NFC teams. Bucs are a joke. Makua betta than Evans Godwin or eggy.

  17. Ash Says:

Probably throw that I am that man in the trash and try something different.

  18. HC Grover Says:

Once people get past the coaching disaster comd the personel disaster. Players stink.

    ———-

    Yeah, me neither.

But who knows, maybe some new coaches get to him, maybe Ronde publicly calling him out gets to him — maybe Licht encouraged Barber to do that, who knows. Also the trend in the NFL has all gone to zone, so that might give Bowles cover to claim he’s ahead of the curve in switching back to man.

  20. Robert Says:

I see a top 5 draft pick for the Bucs in the 2027 draft. In fact I see a top 5 pick in each round.

  21. HC Grover Says:

    He aint no super star.

  22. HC Grover Says:

Watching well coached teams with good players for NFC champs is just night and day from the Bowzo Buccaneers.

  23. Hugh Glazerhouse Says:

So, other than Doug Williams and Tom Brady, who is a better franchise quarterback than Baker? He’s as good as this franchise has had other than these two. No one seems to be able to refuse that. In that case, shut up about Baker.

  24. Jmarkbuc Says:

“ maybe Ronde publicly calling him out gets to him — maybe Licht encouraged Barber to do that, who knows.”

Any GM who has to rely on in-house public relations guy to steer his coach, isn’t much of a GM.

    Bud Licht isn’t.

  25. Aqualung Says:

Baker has regressed under Tood and will continue to regress. He has turned into Brown Baker. He sucks.

  26. MelvinJunior Says:

“it’s time for Mayfield to “take some ownership” of the offense because he knows exactly what he likes and doesn’t like as an eighth-year quarterback.

More rollouts next season would be good for Mayfield.”

EXACTLY. Versus allowing his ‘emotions’ to takeover, and making ridiculous ‘childish’ comments on social media about a former coach and current divisional rival (which is absurd by the way, given his age, & etc.). It’s what I’ve said about Baker all along… He lacks self-awareness, and is NOT a very smart individual. He is too ‘self-centered’ to really know any better. All it does is just play into the hands of all of his detractors, while giving them even more ammunition to use against him. Then, it only hurts HIM even more in the log-run in any ‘potential’ future deals, & etc. But, HE STILL doesn’t get-it! It’s always been SUCH a major ‘red-flag’ for HIM to begin with, and HE STILL cannot control himself, or just doesn’t care. Which AGAIN, only further PROVES the above as being 💯 TRUTH.

But, going back to what Hoyer said… It is the exact same thing I said, all during last season. He has to get ‘outside’ the pocket more often, where he can see the ‘throwing lanes’ much better, and be able to make more plays! It makes NO SENSE, why he is so content with just standing there inside the pocket with all of that traffic and everything else going on all around him!? I mean, WHY just continue to stand there, within arms length of defenders and everyone else, standing RIGHT IN YOUR FACE. He literally CAN’T SEE (while having to duck and slide to one direction or the other), and is WHY he continues to MISS ‘wide-open’ WR’s all the time, AND his ‘timing’ is so far off. I mean, you’d THINK after 8-years as an NFL ‘Starting’ Quarterback, that HE would have enough command of the offense, to KNOW what he does BEST.

It’s NOT standing in the pocket all day, while trying to hit ‘receivers’ downfield. It’s Tempo and Rhythm. Misdirection and Motion. Get it out of his hands FAST with a quick passing game, plenty of rollouts, and play action passing. A solid run-game and run-blocking scheme, like under COEN. He HAS TO Be Able To READ Defenses much much better, PRE-SNAP. When the pocket begins to collapse, DON’T stand there… Get the hell OUT. Extend the play and use YOUR ARM. Not your legs. Stay Fresh and Healthy. And, when you do have to run and take a hit… Just get your ass UP and get back to the huddle, and then RUN THE NEXT GD PLAY. Cause, you’d ‘think’ SURELY by now, you’d be able to DO THAT. Versus jumping up and ‘feeling’ as if you have to get into someone’s FACE every damn time, and HEAD-BUT a freaking O-Lineman. BE SMART and LOOK SMART, for once.

  27. What it is Says:

I noticed Stafford fumbled and its just the second quarter. Does that mean Mcvay should get rid of him? I mean this is the NFC Championship game, come on now, for Pete’s sake. There should be no mistakes at this level. I also noticed Maye had a 58 passer rating and a completion percentage of 47 today. Mayfields is 105.9 and 63 and we are wanting to get rid of him, right? I’m thinking the Patriots should get rid of that trash. Right boys?

  28. Wyoming Joe Says:

Somehow I find it hard to believe that Brady didn’t have a TON of input on the offense of any teams he played for, lol.

Secondly, even though it was obvious that Baker was injured, now that the season’s over, I’d really like to know why the Buc’s coaches didn’t play their QB2. Obviously, the object is to win the game, but more importantly, to let Baker heal for a week or two. Especially during the midseason. K’mon, Bridgewater can’t be that bad!

  29. MelvinJunior Says:

I mean, he just publicly let the entire world (which includes Stefanski) know that Head Coach Stefanski STILL gets under HIS SKIN and STILL gets to him. Now, EVERYONE KNOWS that ATL HC Stefanski is living ‘rent free’ in HIS HEAD. So, advantage ATL HC Stefanski. You have to be an ADULT as a franchise ‘starting’ QB.

  30. Fanofdabucs Says:

Some idiot on here just commented on Mayes completion% on the road, in a blizzard against the beat defense in football. Good lord the stupidity in here.

  31. Gipper Says:

Told all about Nick Emannwori who is infinetly better than any Tampa linebacker or overrated safety AWjr. Still think Emmanwori a lot better #1 pick than EE.

  32. MadMax Says:

Man, that Emmanwori is a baller for the seahawks…we missed on that one, especially with all the help we need on D.

Baker was hurt some, yes and he made some bad decisions at times, yes….but that doesnt take away from the sham of a D scheme todd runs.

  33. MelvinJunior Says:

@ What it is Says: “I noticed Stafford fumbled and its just the second quarter.”

So, YOU are comparing Baker Mayfield to future HOF’er Matthew Stafford, then!? Okay, GOT-IT! Lmao. No matter HOW BAD you really want that to be true, it’s not going to make-it true by continuing to spew such BS over and over, again.

  34. HeavyE Says:

Thank You MelvinJr! baker is trash, & will always be trash, guaranteed two losses to ATL, from now on……..

  35. Gipper Says:

Baker if watching Sam Darnold must be envious as Darnold has great protection and all day to throw.

  36. Cleanhouse Says:

Carlton Davis III good enough to start at CB for the Pats in the Super Bowl but not enough for us…. We have Zion and he’s bored.

  37. HeavyE Says:

Doug Williams, Brad Johnson,Tom Brady and Jameis Winston are better than the little leprechaun……

  38. Cleanhouse Says:

    Nice job Licht

  39. Ricky Says:

@Lakeland. Bucs will not be ok. We will not be ok.

  40. What it is Says:

Melvin, your statement about rent free is a perfect example of how your mental process is totally screwed up. When you screw someone and that screwing cost you millions and sets you’re career back years.. uh… yeah that’s going to mess with you. If you’re human anyway. Seriously, you people are not right in the head. Rent free, really…
I find it interesting that the SS are leading at half time with their #1 defense in the league and Baker put a beating on them. How freaking hilarious is that? WE SHOULD BE THERE RIGHT NOW!!! If we were healthy we would be on our way to the superbowl!!!!

“So, other than Doug Williams and Tom Brady, who is a better franchise quarterback than Baker?”

Doug Williams was not a good QB. Yes, he won a SB after he left, but so did Dilfer.

Doug only had a QBR over 70 twice, and the second time was only because he didn’t play a full season.

He was interception prone for us (worse than Mayfield).

Out of his 9 seasons he was only healthey for three.

He was a legacy player, but not a good one.

Carlton Davis III good enough to start at CB for the Pats in the Super Bowl but not enough for us….

    ———

Davis was shipped out of town because he told Bowles his zone defense was stupid and ineffective – and did so publicly. So he got the boot, along with Devin White who also said the same thing.

  45. Rod Munch Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai – It was a completely different game back then. Put Baker into the 1979 game, and he would legit be hurt and out injured for the year in the first 5 mins of play.

Meanwhile put Williams into the modern game where you’re not allowed to hit anyone, the defenders can’t drag down the receivers on every play, and he was encouraged to run, and he’d be a really interesting player.

  46. Jmarkbuc Says:

Talk about a killer instinct. McVey goes right at Woolen after that stupid penalty.

    Taunt me? F U.

  47. MelvinJunior Says:

The Seahawks were without their TOP-4 DB’s when we played them. It’s not the same defense. Or offense either. Sam “The Man” Darnold had JUST gotten there, AND they added Shaheed at the deadline. So, NOT the same team. AND, ya think that just maybe, it being quite the stretch to say that the team that finished with possibly THE WORST RECORD in the ENTIRE LEAGUE, over the final 9-GAMES (over HALF) of the season, would be going to THE “Super Bowl.” That was 2-7 with the ‘weakest’ schedule you could ever had dreamed of, and with most of our weapons BACKL Real funny how it’s ALWAYS, “IF, IF, IFFFFF, IF” when a select few ‘special’ people (or family members) are talking about Baker.

  48. MelvinJunior Says:

He needs to go and workout with the Rays some this “Spring Training,” and learn how to SLIDE. Or, one of the other local clubs, such as the Yankees, Phillies, or Blue Jays!
