BY IRA KAUFMAN

The final autopsy for the 2025 Buccaneers is in. It’s damning and it’s complicated.

The initial judgment is simple — two things can be true at the same time. This team was poorly coached and this roster was exposed.

Todd Bowles

First up, the coaching.

Despite all the key injuries, the 2025 Bucs underachieved at 8-9. A 6-2 club at the bye week in a lousy division has no business missing the playoffs. Even with his late-season struggles, Baker Mayfield remains the best quarterback in the NFC South and he took virtually every snap through 17 starts.

A ravaged defense was hardly decimated by injuries, yet Tampa Bay rarely made big stops in the final nine games.

Is Calijah Kancey that much of a difference-maker? Hardly.

Special teams play was a major issue, and that’s on the coaching staff. Too many kicks were blocked and too many kickoff returns went for big yardage. The game in Buffalo was a prime example. You can’t keep giving Josh Allen short fields to work with. Those gaffes cost the Bucs dearly in a shootout.

Tackling was subpar … again. There were far too many mis-communications in pass coverage. This defense couldn’t cover running backs in the flat. That issue started early in the season opener at Atlanta and Bowles never made the necessary adjustments.

This team rarely matched the energy level of the opposition, and that’s unacceptable. You’d need one heck of a memory to recall a big hit by a defender that galvanized teammates. When the Bucs played at Miami, in a game of vital importance for the visitors, the Dolphins displayed more urgency.

Going forward, this defensive scheme needs to be streamlined. Judging by the flurry of coverage breakdowns, It’s too complex. Rondé Barber, who knows a thing or two about pass defense, suggests Bowles needs to simplify the plans he’s asking his young secondary to execute.

Yes, Bowles had a bad year. He’s the head coach and this staff didn’t maximize the skill set of Buc players. The Glazers decided to give him another chance to keep this franchise relevant in the power rankings. He enters a prove-it-or-else season next fall.

And now for the rest of the story.

Jason Licht has done a lot of good things as Tampa Bay’s general manager since 2014. His first draft pick, Mike Evans, is likely to own a gold jacket. That’s a heck of a start. Licht learned from his mistakes, and that’s the sign of a sharp executive.

But he’s got a glaring weak spot that caught up with the Bucs last season.

The same guy who drafted Evans, Tristan Wirfs, Chris Godwin, Luke Goedeke, Tykee Smith and Antoine Winfield Jr. has found little success drafting dynamic players for the front seven on defense.

Licht signed Shaq Barrett and Ndamukong Suh as free agents. He traded for Jason Pierre-Paul. Those moves contributed greatly to the 2020 championship run, but they’re gone and capable replacements haven’t arrived.

Here are the front seven draft picks under Licht: Kwon Alexander, Noah Spence, Devante Bond, Kendell Beckwith, Steve Tu’ikolovatu, Vita Vea, Jack Cichy, Devin White, Anthony Nelson, Terry Beckner Jr., Khalil Davis, Chapelle Russell, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, K.J. Britt, Grant Stuard, Logan Hall, Andre Anthony, Calijah Kancey, YaYa Diaby, SirVocea Dennis, José Ramirez, Chris Braswell, David Walker and Elijah Roberts.

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Out of those 24 players, only a few have made much of an impact at One Buc Place.

Bowles has tried to cobble together a pass rush without an edge rusher that keeps opposing offensive coordinators up at night. Licht swung and missed on Haason Reddick. He’ll be a free agent again in March and there’s not a team in the league that will offer big money for his services.

The sack numbers dropped in 2025, but that’s not the end of the story. Pocket quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins, Matt Stafford, Sam Darnold and Jared Goff were rarely moved off their comfort zones. Instead of applying pressure, the Buc defense faced the pressure of trying to contest passes from a clean pocket.

A healthy Kancey would have helped, but let’s be realistic — he’s not the second coming of Aaron Donald.

The Bucs need a winning edge at the edge and a tone-setter at inside linebacker. Those are the offseason priorities and it’s up to Licht and his inner circle to address the deficiencies on this roster.

We’ve seen what Bowles can do as a defensive play-caller when he has a full toolbox. Just ask Patrick Mahomes. Now Bowles is under the spotlight, as he deserves to be after a losing season.

But Licht has some explaining to do when it comes to forging a credible pass rush. This team needs an ass-kicker up front and a rangy, physical stud roaming the middle of the field.

Coaching matters, of course. Bowles has much to prove and ownership won’t tolerate another losing season. The NFC South won’t stay down forever and the Bucs are in danger of being left behind. But in the end, its the players who are most responsible for success or failure.

There’s a lot to like about this roster, especially if the offensive line remains healthy, yet there are issues on defense that need to be addressed.

Let’s see how adept Licht is at fixing a hole where the completions get in.

The Most disturbing part of the article:

All the way back to the Bye Week!

  3. JustVisiting Says:

    Complex/genius good, in almost anything.

  4. JustVisiting Says:

That didn’t work: Complex/genius does not equal good, in almost anything, because you typically need geniuses to execute whatever-it-is, and geniuses are almost always in short supply.

  5. Addb Says:

I don’t trust Bowles’s staff to teach and develop anyone. We bought our pass rush in 2020

  6. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

It’s not too complex. It’s not anything at all. Bowles defense is flat out the easiest defense in the league for a QB to decipher. Look at what rookies have been doing for years. Opposing offenses know exactly where our DBs will be on every single play and they send their receivers where they won’t be. Receivers are open at the snap and a better pass rush will help but it won’t fix anything until we get a whole new defense. And probably 6-7 new players.

  7. buc4evr Says:

Thanks Ira. This what Bucs fans have been saying all season. The defense is totally devoid of talent, save three players. Licht has done a terrible job as GM on defense over the past three years and his picks have for the most part have been busts. Bowles should be on the hot seat, but Licht needs to be right there With him. Coaching has been horrible. I kind of feel sorry for Grizzard, he was not qualified to become OC. How dumb is it to promote a guy to OC in the NFL that has never called a play at any level.

  8. nick houllis Says:

    FAIR
    Completely fair.
Too many people want the shiny toys out there where the grass grows greener than ever, but truth is we won as many games by 3 points with luck as we lost by 3 points with bad luck. We could have been 12-5. We also could have been 5-12 very easy.

  9. Bosch Says:

If you agree with Ira’s assessment (as I do) there is little reason to have confidence in Bowles and Licht. I guess the Glazers are hoping (Joe
s favorite word) they will look miraculously improve if given another year. I guess we might as well get on with it. 2026 is already a lost season.

  10. Adam's Angry Says:

If Licht is so bad at spotting front-7 talent in the draft, he shouldn’t be so shy about free agency and working at the trade deadline. Trade a pick for a proven commodity.

  11. Davenport Says:

The system on defense is not working and hasnt for years.

Time was a rookie/weak QB would have the worst day of his life facing us. Now they are shredding us on the regular.

Nothing will change because Bowles won’t change.

  12. Jmarkbuc Says:

So basically Bowles and Licht gotta go. They both failed at their job, and it’s not the first time.

  13. Beeej Says:

  14. Todd Says:

Good on Licht for picking a HOF’er on his 1st draft pick ever , but Rich McKays first TWO draft picks became HOF’ers in Sapp and Brooks.

Now ask yourself if Licht would ever pick someone like Sapp and the answer is a resounding NO. Licht has pigeon holed himself into picking only the type of guys HE wants, which leaves a bunch of talent that he will NOT pick.

  15. Let ‘em bake Says:

    A fair assessment , sir.

  16. Newbie Says:

Ira – spot on. And I have zero confidence in the guy shopping for the [defensive] groceries based on track record. Glazers fumbled big time by NOT making a change, especially with the coaches that are available. We have seen this movie before and know the ending.

I really want to know what the heck is going on inside? The wonderful “culture” or the “Brady effect” is long gone. What were the problems? Why were their problems? How come Bowles and Licht had ZERO influence on turning it around mid-season? There was a lot of talk but no results.

It’s disgusting to me that the Glazers think fans are dumb enough to believe that firing a few coaches will deflect all the BS. Outside the special teams coach, the rest were scapegoats. Even Grizz. Sure the offense under performed but only two guys started every game (Baker and Barton) and we all know Baker was hurt the back half (at least) of season.

Bowles is a “defensive” guy yet the defense STINKS. I mean we flat out stink. Can’t pressure. Can’t tackle. Can’t cover. It’s coaching, bad roster and bad scheme yet that is acceptable to the Glazers. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT. Like I said, the team I have loved for 50 years and supported, is pushing this all aside… why? It is complete BS.

  17. mj Says:

    not excited for 26

  18. It's Corn Says:

If the coaches mattered enough to justify firing Grizzard, then why shouldn’t it matter equally in firing the defensive coordinator of Bowles?

The problem is that Bowles needs edge players who can rush the passer, stop the run, AND play pass coverage. So Licht gets guys like JTS for that silly defensive scheme. Jack of all trades, master of none.

And Mahomes could barely walk in that Super Bowl, and Drew Brees could barely lift his arm. I’m not going to give Bowles credit for genius in those games.

But the Rams game the following year….

  19. Boge Says:

It’s funny how the 2nd SB keeps being brought up as evidence of IBS defensive prowess, they were missing both their tackles. Isn’t that kind of relevant?

  20. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I can’t help but question how much influence Bowles has had in defensive draft picks. We’ve had some success drafting DBs but we’ve had mostly duds in the front seven and the Devin White saga was really disappointing. Sometimes I think Licht is a little too safe with his approach. Wouldn’t mind seeing him be more aggressive and maybe trade up for that can’t miss, blue chip, prospect. If you see a M. Parsons in a draft class, then trade the farm to go get him. Those are franchise changing moves.

  21. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Offense averaged less than 18 points per game the last 3 games.
The D needs better coaching and players , true, but the offensive failures the last 6 games were the reason Bucs missed the playoffs.
They better draft an OLineman in the 1st 3 rounds of draft to shore up the backup Guard situation since that’s the excuse for Mayfield’s poor play at end of season

  22. Oxycondomns Says:

licht lost his edge after winning super bowl. that draft he said the bucs were drafting from a position of luxury he should have been put on notice with that comment. he got lazy , conducting his draft research from the local wing house

  23. gotbbucs Says:

Bowles defensive scheme can be good enough for three and a half quarters of a game, but if you can’t play man on the outside and get to the QB for half of the 4th quarter then you can’t make it very far in the NFL. All of the wildcard games this weekend made that very obvious.

You either have to have an offense that can score in a two minute drill, or you better have a defense that can get that stop. For the second half of this season, the Bucs had neither.

  24. Lefty R Says:

Fine that Todd Bowles is coming back, however the Bucs need to straighten out the Coaching Staff first!!!

Then figure out what players to acquire

    Then mold it all together!!!

Plus, I just read the Falcons and Ravens are going to interview McDaniel for HC!!! If the Bucs want McDaniel, they should make him the highest paid OC in the land for a one year deal!!

If they can’t get him, I would want Jon Gruden as the OC

I don’t think anyone is looking at Jonathon Gannon as a HC or Raheem Morris this next upcoming season, but I would hire both as Defensive Coaches

That is what I would do and emphasize to all of them, we are all in this together!!!! and have one goal!!! The Super Bowl

PS I think Baker Mayfield is the guy to get the Bucs to the Super Bowl…. I was fired up when the Bucs signed him from the scrap heap!

It brought me back as a fulltime Buc fan!!

  25. Confido75 Says:

Blame is shared, but the leadership takes the brunt of it. My only issue with Bowles and JL is, “what did you do through the season to adjust for the issues?”. I get some things are out of their control. However, if Bowles gave more autonomy to his defensive assistants and the D got worse, which it did, then why did you not monitor and address the situation instead of waiting until the end of the season to blame and fire assistants. It only takes a game or two to figure out they were not capable, not an entire season. Saying you are going to get more involved tells me you were not involved enough to begin with.

  26. Ash Says:

More involved so he watched the defense fail week after week and did nothing? Hmm ok I’m not buying that Todd doesn’t know how to fix what’s wrong with the team. If the 49ers can do what they do with everyone they lost the injury excuse rings pretty hollow keeping him is a mistake but bucs are where they are unfortunately.

  27. AlstottNumber1 Says:

“Yes, Bowles had a bad year. He’s the head coach and this staff didn’t maximize the skill set of Buc players. The Glazers decided to give him another chance to keep this franchise relevant in the power rankings. He enters a prove-it-or-else season next fall.”

Anytime Ira speaks about the Glazers take it as fact. He’s very close to them.

“Tackling was subpar … again. There were far too many mis-communications in pass coverage. This defense couldn’t cover running backs in the flat. That issue started early in the season opener at Atlanta and Bowles never made the necessary adjustments.”

This statement alone should have gotten Bowles fired. Instead he’s still running the defense.

“Out of those 24 players, only a few have made much of an impact at One Buc Place.”

Combine a GM that can’t draft front seven defenders with a HC\DC that is incapable of molding front seven defenders and you have a quagmire.

  28. Bee Says:

Funny how backup QBs and rookie QBs have no trouble carving up Bowles defense but for the players playing in the defense, it’s too complicated. Make it make sense.

No mention of the offense Ira?

    Bucs defense ppg
    2024 22.6
    2025 24.2

    Bucs offense ppg
    2024 29.5
    2025 22.4

Defense got a little worse while the offense became a TD worse from the year before. Lack of execution on the offense doomed the season as well. When you look at the entire season, the offense had to rely on last second drives to win, they never held big leads.

When the defense made stops and protected the lead, the offense rarely did much to help or ice the game.

  29. BucU Says:

I must live in Bizarro world. The ridiculously long list of Bowles failures is GLARING. There is no universe where this bum of a HC/DC should be retained even though we know why he was. He had a bad year? That’s the take? So we should just chalk it up to the fraud had a bad year and move on? Not me. This bum not only lost 7 of the last nine games but his defense was a laughingstock….AGAIN. 2nd and 3rd string QB’s putting up big numbers and wins against the defensive guru. Every single solitary metric screamed fire this guy immediately! But hey, they fired Grizzard and the ST coach. So nothing more to see here. The Glazers are the biggest fools of them all for extending Bowles for no reason whatsoever last offseason. The ONLY reason he’s employed right now. I hate everything about this team right now. I hope they pay dearly for keeping the coach who said “we as coaches have done all we can do” during the historic 2025 collapse.

  30. heyjude Says:

Holy cow, Ira! Fiery but so true. Right on about everything, especially the pocket QBs and no pressure from the Bucs. Also, Licht didn’t do anything before the trade deadline. It’s like everything has been in stand-still. Bringing Reddick, Teddy, and JPP in that ended up being a big waste of money too.

Lefty R – Agreed, we need someone like McDaniel as OC. The Bucs could get him too. I would bet he and his family would rather stay in FL then make another move to another state. He is young and the players like him, and he has that energy vibe.

  31. Newbie Says:

Ash – that’s the difference between really good coaches (SF with Shanahan and Saleh) and a bad coach (Bowles).

  32. Colonel Angus Says:

This team failed in all 3 phases of the game

  33. HC Grover Says:

Who is this Ira guy anyway? I never heard of him b4 this blog. He is hard to listen to. Here he lays down for Bowzo to prep for his pre season hype as usual.

  34. HC Grover Says:

Put the Buc Ship in Dry Dock for the off season. The hull is full of ship worms and rotten. When Ira calls to fire Bowzo I wil listen. Until then Happy Tales.

  35. HC Grover Says:

HAHAHA He gives Bowzo the Ira stamp of approval in his last 3 paragraphs what a shill.

  36. Stetematt Says:

Ultra-slow linebackers also not good at coverage left a giant gaping hole either in the middle of the defense or the flat on every play. That’s why speedy running backs shredded us- see Bijan, Saquon, Jahmyr Gibbs. Flooding slow coverage in the various zones and play action also shredded us. Our slow LB’ers virtually always bit on play action leaving their zones wide open.

    It’s not rocket science.

The best Bucs defenses always had speedy great covering and tackling linebackers. Without them, you’re in big trouble. That’s true in either zone or man.

  37. TexasBuc 1776 Says:

Last night, a 49er team, totally decimated by injuries and even losing their all-pro TE during the game, beat the Eagles, last year’s SB champions, on their turf.
How, with leadership and culture, epitomized by their HC and GM.
Ira’s review was spot on. I see none of that with our leadership. The Glazers stood pat for ’26, pure stupidity. Where is Malcome when you need him?

  38. Buddhaboy19 Says:

why keep Bowles, just dont get it. He’s the turd in the punch Bowles.

  39. Tampa2ATL Says:

    Gospel truth from Ira. Amen!

  40. Show Me The TDs Says:

    I’ll add two points.
    1. I think Bowles claims that the defense is extremely complex because he can then lay the blame on the players. Could it possibly be that he is a poor coach?
    2. Bucs desperately need a quality backup QB. Judging by his performance, Mayfield was injured during the bye week. This would account for his horrendous performance for the remainder of the season.

  41. heyjude Says:

HC Grover – Respectfully, it isn’t all Todd’s fault and so he gets another season. Jason, other coaches, and some players are right there with Todd too. After the bye, it was like they all quit. They could have gotten players before the trade deadline. We should have had a better backup QB for Baker. He was hurt. And Teddy was on the injury report a couple of times too. Trask wasn’t the answer. It was like no one though about what happens if our QB is really injured. Complicity. We need progressive.

  42. Baking with the next one Says:

    Great one Ira!!

Licht will do great. But the issue is the scheme. We have a coach who defers his responsibility to the.captains of the team. Is inevitable 2026 is RINSE AND REPEAT.

  43. rocket Says:

Staring down the canon barrel of 8,000-10,000 season ticket holders bailing from the ship and … a 2026 record of 6-11. Yah, they’ll make the change after next season. So what, another year is burned. After all, what’s a year in the life of a Bucs fan worth anyway? Vote with your wallet, fans. Hand back your season tickets for 2026. And when they make the change after next season, you’ll be able to buy your season tickets in 2027 (confident you’ll have lots of options).

  44. adam from ny Says:

when all the sh!t hits the fan, what do you do…?

you have cup of coffee and a tasty coconut donut…maybe two…

and you remove cozmo’s “buccaneers doggy sweater” and rub him on the head 🙂

  45. ModHairKen Says:

That crack about “Mahomes” is incomplete. Mahomes was hobbled with a bad toe in the Super Bowl. To imply that it was only Bowles’ defense that stopped him is fiction.

How about a comment or two on all of the defensive backs that Licht has drafted that have not worked out?

We all know what next January is going to look like. A fired coach, probably a fired GM, and a franchise in utter disarray.

Bowles better find a Herm Edwards who can be his “bad cop” or this next season will be one of the worst ever.

  46. JoeyJoeStein Says:

Ira CoughMan is being willfully ignorant AND dishonest .The issue is glaring. The culprit is Bowles

  47. #1bucsfan Says:

Great article Ira and that’s the drum that I’ve bin beating. Give Bowles the tools he needs to make his defense good. Listen I know it’s the greatest but with the right guys his defense can hang with the best. Jus ask mahomes and Andy haha love that line ira

  48. Gipper Says:

Shocking that Todd B survived this disaster. Still stunned that Glazer’s extended this guy at the end of 2024.

  49. BayouBullet Says:

Terrible take. Todd oversaw the worst red zone defense in the NFL… His defense gave up 411 points… His team finished the season 2-7… He’s under performed for years… He’s not popular with the fans. Doesn’t matter what I type here because Ira and the Joe’s will continue to blow smoke up our butts. But as sure as God made little green apples next season will come and once again Todd will fail only question will be how many fans stuck around to watch.

  50. LANshark Says:

Question – is Licht bad at drafting defense front 7 for Bowles, or is Bowles influencing who Licht drafts? One or the other is misfiring badly.

Lack of speed at ILB is hurting us much more than lack of sacks, in my opinion. We do get hurries and hits, which do matter. We just don’t seem able to get home. In almost every game, the middle of the field was wide open for TEs, RBs and crossing routes.

The d-backs SEEM to be doing alright (with some exceptions) – Parrish, Izien, Smith, Winfield and Dean were overall pretty good unless we gave the QB a week to pick an choose. You cannot ask DB’s to cover for more than 5 seconds and expect to win…

As for the offense – not having your starting 5 play a single game together… nuf said… you cannot win that way.

  51. TampaBayBucFan Says:

Let’s hope Kancey is the difference maker and he stays healthy…..problem solved.

  52. HC Grover Says:

heyjude…yes it is Bowzo the HC as he has scapegoated the entire staff….Would you work under him???? Not if you are good. Only if you are desperate for some dough this year.

  53. PLawson Says:

Ira puts the emphasis where it belongs: on the defense. The problems go back several years with no pass rush of consequence and a soft secondary that allowed virtually any team to march down the field with chunk plays. It became obvious that the only way to stop it was by blitzing and although Bowles is known as a big blitzer, they did not blitz enough. It appears to be a combination of poor secondary design and lack of personnel on both the line and the secondary. If they don’t do something dramatic in the offseason it is going to be the same thing next year. In other words, putting immense pressure on the offense.

  54. View from 132 Says:

It was just a shell of a team going down the stretch. No playmakers. No big INTs. No big hits. No big returns. Just lifeless. It sucked, and I see another lost decade ahead.

  56. Newbie Says:

Ira or Joe – question for the both of you –

Who gets assigned the blame with the loss of season tix sales for 2026?

Gonna be real interesting for Bucs when they host the Steelers, Vikes, Pack, Browns at Ray Jay and they have more fans than Bucs. Im not spending a dime on this team.

Shame of the Glazers for keeping this regime around.

Key words Ira – Bowles never made the necessary adjustments.

That’s his coaching style in a nutshell. He can’t make the necessary adjustments, whether it be play calling or personnel on the field and that’s just nuts.

  58. Lefty Says:

If Todd was fired today, would he be interviewed around the league for even a DC position given his recent résumé?

If you don’t think bowles had a hand in those picks and signings forget about ya. Bowles picked reddick. Yes ira some of us know with two good edge rushers the bucs win 11 games. We also know bowles get out coached in tne playoffs by every coach and their wives. No thanks.

  64. Allen Lofton Says:

So many defense players were out of position to make 🤔 plays. Some of the players blaim lack of physical hands on practice. Another criticism is Jason Licht failing in drafting edge rushers. All of his picks vanish on the field. Some write that Bowles needs to dumb down his play calls. HOW ABOUT DRAFTING PLAYERS WHO HAVE INTELLIGENCE AND WILLING TO TAKE THE TIME TO LEARN THE PLAYBOOK.

AND MAKEBE KICK SOME OF PLAYERS IN THE ASS FOR STUPIDITY. And if the Bucs fail in 2026 find an OC to replace him.

The Glazers are giving Bowles his last chance and hopefully he turns 2026
