“Our Back’s Against The Wall; Pretty Comfortable There”

December 23rd, 2025

Why are the Bucs be confident they can snap out of their losing streak? Joe’s not sure why fans would be confident.

Joe asked Baker Mayfield the same question today.

Mayfield wasn’t up for a long answer.

“Our back’s against the wall. Pretty comfortable there,” Mayfield said.

Next question.

Joe asked Todd Bowles what makes him confident the Bucs can get out of their funk. Bowles talked about overall work ethic and the guys on the roster. Of course, Bowles feels the team has been “this close” to winning the past few weeks. So he certainly is a confident guy, though the truth probably came out in his profanity-laced rant following the Bucs-Falcons game.

Joe’s just about tired of listening. Put it on the field.

Totally agree with your sentiment. 100%

  2. Stuck with Green Says:

This a far cry from Mr Killer Mentality quote. Todd Bowles = Mentality Killer

  3. Tbbucsfan Says:

They can’t put it on the field. Not good enough. They are becoming more delusional by the week.

  4. Steven007 Says:

The Miami game will be interesting for a few different reasons. We are quite capable of beating them obviously, and we are just as capable of being beaten. The old trope of playing a rookie quarterback and having our way with them ended with our dominating defenses of the early aughts. And they are a good running team to boot. Something else we used to be good at, stopping the run, but are no longer. Achane likely has 100-yard game and he can catch the ball well too.

  5. Mike Johnson Says:

This Buc team has imploded. I don’t even think we beat Miami. No pass rush and the Defense refuses to get off the field. If losing the last 2 means Todd Bowles will be fired? I’m all in.

  6. Football 1 Says:

Well Joe what would you expect him to say?, yes we have little confidence and yes we don’t like having our backs against the wall.
Glad he gas that demeanor not so sure about others.
I can’t explain how the team goes from many players injured, yet winning all the way to many players returning and playing worse each week.
Yes I wonder is this the team that beat Seattle on the road and San Fran. At home.
My only explanation is the team has lost complete confidence in itself.
Maybe someone else has this answer. If so please let us know.
A big fan scratching his head in amazement!!!

  7. Redzone Says:

Bowles is safe regardless so they might as well win – he’ll get a mulligan bc of injuries and how much he’s done winning the division up until this yr

Probably can’t stop Achane or Waddle though so probably another loss

  11. Jeff Says:

This kind of commentary from the players proves the message from the coaching staff is way off. Should be solely focused on dominating the Dolphins. Bowles and his soft ways have just got to go.

    Well…he’s young enough.

It’s his second stint as an OC…so not a rookie at it.

My one concern is that he only started with the Seahawks this year…so it would be a one off year for him.

I’m leaning more toward someone with a track record : Matt Nagy

  24. Lakeland Says:

Todd Bowles knows that these players can’t be motivated
You can’t get something from a player that’s not there
These Buc players are not that good
Jason Licht and Bowles drafted this trash
And they are going to ” Ride and Die” with these trash players

    I have said it a million times…..this is a .500 team
    A .500 GM, .500 HC, .500 players, .500 QB

    Their ceiling is playing.500 football
And that’s where they are at now

All of these NFL analysts knows this
That’s why they always pick the Bucs to win 8-9 games

  25. Pewter Power Says:

“Our back’s against the wall. Pretty comfortable there,”

Sit back and think about how absolutely STUPID that sounds compared to having already having locked up the division if they had won the last three winnable games🤣🤣🤣

  26. SteveK Says:

Show me on the field! Win this week or it’s cooked. We suck out loud and it’s been a dreadful product in the field the last 6 weeks.

Losing 5 of last 6, 7 of last 9 games calls for a serious alarm bell.

If they underperform again they’re done, k hope they turn it up a notch bc it’s been pathetic.

He’s unproven. Sure Seattle looks good this year but I’m sorry, I’m crediting McDonald for that more than Kubiak. Good OC. But not fornua

  28. 813bucboi Says:

    BONZAI

In short, Klint was a college safety who later started coaching on the offensive side of the ball…

imo, that important because he cant be classified as an “offensive coach” unlike bowles who was a safety in the NFL and DC and defensive minded coach….

with Klint’s defensive background he wont be “hands off”

obviously, he’s learned from his father but also learned from Kyle Shanahan while being a passing game coordinator

he currently has the seahawks offense humming with sam darnold

dave canales and cohen had 0 good years as OCs in the NFL until they became an OC….

he’s a football coach..not an offensive or defensive coach like the ones we have currently or in the past and he’s been studying and coaching under several great coaches…

last but not least, he’s young, competitive and innovative…

    just my 2 cent…

NO reputable DC will come here Even If it was made law because with one more loss, Bowles IS a Lame Duck and Soon to be GONE! And no reputable DC OR OC will see us as a desirable destination.

BOWLES JUST GAVE ALL THE PLAYERS X MAS OFF!

Dont get me wrong, we all deserve time with our families and if the team was on track I have no problem with it. However, the team is in a downward spiral. Everyone should be putting in extra work to get it right. These athletes are paid millions of dollars. And jobs and playoffs are on the line. This further reinforces the work ethic, prep and study is not there hence why players are missing assignments.

Tom Brady kicked his family out of this house so he could prep for the superbowl. This further enforces there is no hunger to get better and Bowles is more worried about keeping his players happy with no accountability.

As far as I am concerned the captains should have called a players meeting and regrouped the team and everyone should be putting in extra work via study and practice and watching film etc to get better. Prep is the key not talk!!

  47. heyjude Says:

Agreed, time for action on the field.

  48. Popmike66 Says:

Sure sounds like Bowles may get 1 more chance. From the noise around the NFL, The Bucs may rid themselves of several bad apple players and several defensive coaches. Also, don’t be surprised if Griz get a semi co offensive coordinator if Bowles is still around next year. I am just saying

  49. Real Bucs fan Says:

I want to say something to all these “fans” commenting. If you really are a Bucs fan, and really love the team, why are you rooting against them and being negative and always seeing the worst side of everything. I know this season hasn’t been perfect but it’s been a hell of a lot better than back in 76 when we first started at the Sombrero. I don’t know how many of yall have watched the new documentary but those fans LOVED their Bucs, win or lose they saw the positive. I remeber when we lost in the NFC championship against the rams and the documentary showed all the fans still being happy they got there and holding up signs saying things like “we still love you” or “worst to first”. Can we all just come together and like our team? Enough about Todd Bowles and baker and Grizzard. We need to see the positive and enjoy being fans of our Bucs.

  50. Defense Rules Says:

Baker Mayfield … “Our back’s against the wall. Pretty comfortable there.”

Anyone who’s comfortable with their ‘back against the wall’ is delusional. Your options are very limited, and you have zero room for mistakes. Based on Bucs recent track record of losing 6 out of the last 7 games, ‘comfortable’ isn’t a good fit.

  51. HC Grover Says:

Could Bowles come up with a blunder equal to the Rams/Cupp disaster. Stay tuned.

  52. Youngbucs Says:

2 players who should be on the the roster big will and whitehead.

  53. Mach Says:

    @Real Buc Fan

Look, we all support the team and want them to do well—nobody is actually rooting against them. But we have to be realistic. This franchise exists because fans pay hard-earned money to see a competitive product. The coaches and players make millions from our pockets, so we have a right to expect results. We aren’t in 1976 anymore, and we shouldn’t have a ‘just happy to be here’ mentality.

As depicted in the documentary—don’t forget that when Malcolm Glazer bought this team, he explicitly moved away from the mediocrity of the Culverhouse era. He ‘swung for the fences’ to get Gruden because he demanded excellence, not just ‘okay.’ That is the standard now.

The frustration isn’t hate; it’s a demand for accountability. Todd Bowles is clearly a nice human being, but he is not getting it done as a Head Coach. The team often looks unprepared, the culture of ‘pride’ has slipped since Brady left, and there is zero urgency to change things that clearly aren’t working. If we saw them trying something different and failing, we could tolerate it. But being stubborn and refusing to adapt is what has fans annoyed.

Toxic positivity doesn’t fix a broken culture. We aren’t being ‘fake fans’ by pointing out that the team is too comfortable—we are demanding the excellence we paid for.

  54. DD Says:

I agree, we have been losing by less than one score a majority of the weeks. Couple plays that shift a few games and we are sitting starters for the next 2 weeks. We dont give up 3rd and 28/4th and 14. We dont throw the interception last game. a few others. Certainly right there. But Bowles. Its time to retire.

  55. Jmarkbuc Says:

Here’s an idea.. don’t collapse midway through every season. No back against the wall.

  56. River rock Says:

The Bucs suck, defense can’t stop anything. They play the man instead of the n
Ball in the secondary, the offensive line leaks like a seiv. The first play is always bucky up the middle, little to no play action.

  57. Mach Says:

What makes this even harder to watch is that the solution is right in front of us. There is absolutely no shame in a leader admitting they need a spark, and Todd Bowles needs to swallow his pride and pick up the phone. This franchise was built on the backs of legends who would bleed for the Pewter and Red. Why aren’t we seeing Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden, or Derrick Brooks in the building?

Reach out to Warren Sapp. Bring in Gerald McCoy. These men don’t just know football; they know what it means to have Bucs Pride. They know what it feels like to refuse to lose. Our current locker room looks like it’s lost its soul since Brady left, and it’s too quiet. We need that Hall of Fame fire back in the facility to remind these players that they aren’t just playing for a paycheck—they’re playing for a city that has suffered through the dark ages and shouldn’t be sent back there.

All these greats would drop everything to help this team turn it around for the home stretch, but it starts with the Head Coach having the humility to ask. If Bowles truly cares about this team more than his own ego, he’ll open those doors and let the legends back in. We don’t want excuses; we want the fire back.

  58. 1sparkybuc Says:

I’m okay with most of the players. Dump the coaches. Cut the deadwood on the roster, hire a new staff, draft guys that love the game, and start over next season. These coaches are the biggest problem. We can’t win anything with them.

  59. buccintimeforchanges Says:

Jason Licht sans Brady is 59-78

REPEAT JL is 59-78 without the greatest QB in NFL history.

JL is responsible for the only losing seasons under Brady in his 20 years as a QB

Arians and Licht were 7-9 wondering when they were getting fired before SAN FRAN said NO to Brady and Brady rescued both their careers.

Licht is a fraud. Anypone nutjob saying he’s been only worried about the offense was probably dropped as a child. How many picks has he wasted on Defense only to have a crappy D???

The charade is over. The narrative is changing. Jason Licht must GO!

  64. BelleGladeBuc Says:

I’m tired of hearing about injuries.

Kyle Shanahan and the 49er’s lost two Hall of Fame players in Bosa and Warner for the season, as well as their QB in Purdy for numerous games playing in probably the toughest division in football with the Rams and Seahawks and all they have done is win 11 games.

Stop 🛑 with the injury excuses.

  66. JustOneGame Says:

    @Mach, well said!

  67. orlbucfan Says:

Bucs are in trouble cos of 2 simple things: Injuries to major players from the start, and the circus known as the OC position. Grizzard doesn’t cut it, and neither did Canales and Coen. Bucs cursed, but they won 2 SBs so there’s that. And these so-called new “fans” can shove it.

  70. SBucs Says:

The Bucs were 6-2 with all the injuries. They were the darlings of media because they’d done so well with so little. The Bucs have regressed to 7-8 that’s all on Todd, his staff and Jason. There will be massive loss of revenue if the Bucs retain Todd, his staff and Jason as GM. The Glazers are not that stupid, they’re businessmen. They can see a losing regime and a coach that has no answers. Funny how last year’s ‘success’ at Carolina by running the ball wrote this year’s game plan. It’s like pure laziness. They watched no film, didn’t scout, expected Carolina in a second year under a new coach to fold into Todd’s idea of how to play the game. Todd is lazy, full if excuses and a loser of a head coach and Jason hasn’t helped.

  71. NorthgaBucs Says:

  75. RagingBrisket Says:

Back against the wall?…more like the comfort of being bent over based on what I’ve watched the last few months.
Licht is the real problem here. He is overrated as a talent evaluator and unless he has Arians or Brady telling him who to pick in free agency he is an unmitigated incompetent disaster. Open your eyes Bucs fans. The manager of this dog squeeze is who is most accountable for the results. Bowles is far more successful with more talent.

  76. ChiBuc Says:

I’m leaning more toward someone with a track record : Matt Nagy

Gulp. Living in Chitown, hard pass. If you don’t like soft teams, Nagy is not for you.

  77. Rod Munch Says:

If Baker didn’t choke the last three games, merely put up a middling performance, the Bucs are 3-0 in those games. It all comes down to Baker, if he shows up vs the Dolphins, the Bucs should win pretty easily. If he chokes yet again, throws more 4th quarter INTs, misses guys who are wide open all game, gets happy feet and holds onto the ball, then the Bucs will lose again.

BTW, going back and rewatching the Baker INT vs Carolina to lose the game, what makes it even worse is that Mike had stumbled, wasn’t really open and Baker threw it to him — well on the opposite side of the field, Baker had 2 Bucs WR’s wide open for a much bigger gain. Also, for the record, rewatching it, Mike had already turned up field when Baker released the ball – it was close, but those who claim Mike is to blame that he cut AFTER the ball was thrown, that is fake news. It was a close play in any case, but man, just look to the right and he’s got two people for huge gains.

No kidding. No one that paid any attention to how the Bears went down hill under Nagy would want him around this team.

If people want to see a Matt Nagy coached team, go rewatch the Bears @ Bucs game from 2021, where they lost 38-3. People whining about Bowles right now would remember these as the good old days if Nagy was here.

  80. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

    @buccintimeforchanges

Brady came here because of the roster that Licht built, and because of the two-time Head Coach of the Year he brought in (Arians)

If you were an NFL owner, your team would look like Cleveland.

  81. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Brady came here because of the roster that Licht built, and because of the two-time Head Coach of the Year he brought in (Arians)”

Can’t forget the two stud WRs who combined for 2,490 yards and 17 combined TDs with both missing time, and doing it with a QB who threw 30 INTs. Had to be a draw compared to who he was throwing to in NE in ‘19

  82. Sly Pirate Says:

  84. SBucs13 Says:

In the nfl season every game is critical. Why are Buc players now putting themselves up against the wall. Ridiculous. This is a rudderless poorly coached, poorly constructed team taking the personality of a bad head coach and regressing week by week. The owners would be foolish not to see the need for change. The worse that can happen is fan apathy and that happens if changes aren’t made.

  85. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

    @Warren Brooks Lynch
No doubt that the two WRs were a draw.

I bet Brady could come out of retirement now and still play at a high level IF he had a great offensive line.

He wouldn’t do it because he learned first-hand that a great O-line can go downhill quickly because of injuries. Once Ryan Jensen went down with an injury and Ali Marpet retired, he probably wished he hadn’t agreed to play for that last year.

  86. Woodman Says:

“Nobody is actually rooting against them” WTF are you talking about? Every other post here someone is saying they would gladly take loses to see Bowels gone that ain’t rooting for them.

Mayfield is comfortable with the Bucs being a ‘suck’ team. That’s what I get out of that. Being comfortable with mediocrity is not a Super Bowl contending attitude.

  89. J Says:

Brady would bring accountability back to this team, even at 90 years old. We need to end this season now. Lose these last 2 games, clean house and let’s see what next season brings. But we need to lose Licht, Griz and Bowles. Need a new QB as well. Mayfield is back to being his usual self. Is Fitzmagic still available?
