Trey McBride And The Bucs

November 28th, 2025

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht keeps his annual draft-board and draft-day desires a secret.

Licht’s not sharing. It doesn’t matter the year.

Yes, once in a while Licht will drop an interesting historical draft-day nugget. But overall, Licht must think either players can’t handle the truth, fans can’t handle the truth or there’s a competitive advantage to be gained by not revealing, say, his 2017 draft board and wish list.

Joe doesn’t get it. Where’s the entertainment in that? Perhaps Licht is writing a tell-all book to be released when he retires.

Regardless, Joe loves Bucs history and Bucs edge rusher coach Larry Foote shared a pebble of it this week.

Foote was asked about Sunday’s opponent, the Cardinals, and what makes their offense go. He pointed to stud Arizona tight end Trey McBride.

“I remember a couple years ago, a lot of people on the offensive side [in Tampa] were buzzing about him in the draft. We didn’t get him, but [No.] 85, he’s a weapon,” Foote said of McBride.

“Guys are starting to argue who’s better, him or the kid from [Las] Vegas (Brock Bowers)? He’s special; he can move like a wide receiver being that big. I got to coach in the Pro Bowl this past season in Orlando, and he was on our team. You could see he moves differently.”

A 2022 second-round pick, McBride is on his way to another 100-catch season and Pro Bowl trip.

Arizona selected him two picks before the Bucs picked guard/tackle Luke Goedeke.

To kick off that second round, the Bucs drafted defensive lineman Logan Hall, who seems destined to play for the Jets or Raiders next year.

While McBride is very special — does anyone box out defenders better on short routes? — Joe wouldn’t trade Goedeke for McBride. Excellent right tackles are harder to find than tight ends.

Speaking of tight ends, the Bucs drafted Cade Otton in Round 4 of that 2022 draft, soon after taking Rachaad White in Round 3.

Joe can only imagine the discussions at One Buc Palace regarding McBride, who grew up not far from Licht’s hometown in Colorado.

Did the Bucs want McBride to replace Rob Gronkowski? Did Tom Brady want McBride, who became the NFL’s highest paid tight end earlier this year?

Now it’s time for the Bucs to stop McBride. If the Bucs can limit him to 99 yards and 9 or 10 catches, Joe will consider that a win for the struggling Tampa Bay defense.

McBride is going to be a problem for the Bucs. Joe mentioned Logan Hall, heck the only thing he has ever contributed to the Bucs was ending Ryan Jensen’s career, the dude is an epic bust but now that he has been brought up for discussion, I predict Bowles will probably drop Logan Hall back in coverage to cover the McBride a few time with his idiotic exotic stunts which do not work and haven’t since the Bucs had Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre Paul. If the Bucs hold the TE to 10 catches and 100 yards, I will be amazed but pleased.

Sounds like David might have a long afternoon come Sunday.

    Go Bucs!!!

I hope not but yeah it wouldn’t surprise me if they lose that game, too! I could see McBride having a good game & Brissett is very capable of having a decent game, too! Especially when he won’t change the scheme/system he’s running on D.

Imagine that, a player receiving top dollar for their position and then going out and performing as a top player in their position. Playing, not injured, not jag. Pride, culture. And dude is doing it with no supporting cast. Meanwhile, our all world safety, AWJ has Dean, Tykee, Parrish all outperforming him. Hmmmm. Pride, culture pfft

It’s about preparation, Todd is great at excuses and not preparing his players eighteen games a year

Dennis is in for a long day.

Give a QB all day to throw and any team can thump us — and have been. I don’t want to hear Licht talk about Braswell shocking anyone (like how JTS was about to turn the corner). Drop the first few draft picks on DLine, then works some trades for proven DlineMEN. Licht is so proud of his draft picks. Admit your mistakes and make changes. Major changes.

  8. TG Says:

D line are wasted with Todd, let lineman be lineman!
When we send Barton on a fly route and he scores an 80 yd TD, I will believe dropping Dline into coverage

So if Brissett lights up our mostly healthy D, can we then put a nail in the “Bowles is a defensive guru” coffin? The Glazers may be watching this game closely in deciding Bowles future. I know I would. Winning the division at 9-8 should cost him his job (unless we make a miraculous playoff run). If we don’t win the division, I don’t want to see Bowles back and would expect a change.

I’ll take Tyler Warren right now, over ALL of ‘em. 💯

    @TG

I’d love to see that happen. Or having Barton returning kicks or punts.
