Todd Bowles (Again) Explains Zyon McCollum Boredom

November 26th, 2025

In February, Joe stood in frigid Indianapolis listening to head coach Todd Bowles explain how cornerback Zyon McCollum gets bored in games and it affects his play.

Odd.

McCollum strugged Sunday after two subpar games against New England and Buffalo.

It seems McCollum is bored again, per Bowles’ words yesterday on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

“[McCollum is] such a great athlete and he’s a very good cover guy. Sometimes he gets bored and we’ve had these discussions, me and him, sometimes he gets bored trying to make a play and then his technique will be lacking and he’ll give up a play,” Bowles said.

So he just thinks too much. He’s just gotta settle down and play, and that’s something that we’re working through and we have confidence in him. And he’ll be fine because he is one of our best players so he’s gotta snap out of it and we gotta work and get better.”

Joe hopes none of the great roofers from Largo to Lakeland get bored today and fall off a roof.

Joe also hopes Bucs team doctors don’t get bored by another injury and misdiagnose Baker Mayfield.

Joe also hopes the stellar transit screeners at Tampa International Airport don’t get bored today and allow a machete-wielding terrorist on a plane this afternoon.

Hopefully, Luke Goedeke won’t get bored run-blocking Sunday.

Maybe it’s time to rotate McCollum like Bowles was doing with Jamel Dean and rookie Benjamin Morrison, and assign a coach to keep McCollum’s mind fresh and focused.

Or just sit his butt down for a couple games. Our secondary scks anyway.

  2. Todd Says:

    Needs Adderal or Ritalin

  3. It's Corn Says:

Hard to be “bored”, AND “thinking too much”.

“Thinking too much” is a sign of a bad defensive scheme where nothing comes naturally from it.

Bowles in a roundabout way admitted his defense strategy sucks.

  4. BucU Says:

Bowles is killing this franchise. Get rid of him Glazers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. SB~LV Says:

Another scratch and dent pick who has been heralded as a genius pick and the clock has struck midnight and his front office carriage has been exposed as a average pumpkin

  6. Cchead Says:

Maybe Todd should hold him accountable and sit him on the bench. Bowles is like an enabler to a drug addict. There in never consequences for their actions.

  7. BA’s Red Pen Says:

These excuses from Bowles don’t cut it. They sound like he’s trying to cover up for a lack of intelligence from the player to me. McCollum sticks and is not remotely worth the contract he was given.

  8. Winny Testaverde Says:

This says it all about the current “leadership” of the Bucs.

Bowles: “He gets bored and loses focus.”

JLicht: “Quick…throw a pile of loot at him with an early bird extension!”

Is it any wonder that the secondary and defense is swirling the Bowles? Come on!

  9. Buc'n Enough Says:

I bet he doesn’t get bored going to the bank with that fat contract JL gave him.
Maybe JL was bored and just gave it to Zyon because he was bored.

The head coach is boring, so speed of the leader, speed of the group. They are ALL bored listening to Bowles.

  10. StormyInFl Says:

Seems like they need to replace the word “bored” with “sucks”.

And, they knew this in February, but grossly overpaid him anyway?

    Good lord.

  11. Colonel Angus Says:

Then have him man up on his receiver. Don’t have him sitting back there in a soft zone. Give him something to do, coach him up coach.

  12. DBS Says:

So they give him a new contract and he gets bored? Then bench him and he can stay bored. Get rid of him at the end of the season.

  13. buc4evr Says:

The guy is a starter in the NFL and gets bored? So the game isn’t exciting enough or playing on TV or to a massive crowd? Maybe he needs to deliver packages or drive for Uber. WTH is wrong with that guy ? Why do we always get the head cases?

    BINGO!!!!

been saying he’s better at playing man…

the soft zone defense is boring…still doesnt give Zyon an excuse to get cooked…if he’s bored on the field, find something for him to do on the bench!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  15. Redzone Says:

Dude how is this considered a pro franchise?

Their utter lack of accountability or give-a-damn is such a slap in the face to this fanbase

Funny article though lol I’ll do one: I hope Jasmine Licht doesn’t get bored and forget about the upcoming trade deadline

I hope Todd Bowles doesn’t get bored and forget to coach it better haha funny Joe

  16. Joe in Michigan Says:

I remember Devin White saying he was bored, too. There’s a problem if these guys are “bored”, something needs to change.

  17. ElioT Says:

Sometimes you just shouldn’t say things out loud.

    This is a total joke.

  18. Buckit Says:

I don’t believe it is boredom, more like playing scared.

  19. Winny Testaverde Says:

I’m getting bored watching Z-z-zyon sleepwalking out there…whiffingnon tackles and trailing the receiver by multiple steps despite that elite 4.3 speed. Perhaps an early bird extension to “prove” he was a savvy pick and so “athletic”?

  20. MikeBuc Says:

whatttt?? Its Christmas time not April 1

I am almost on the fire Bowles bandwagon. He is running a day care with that excuse.

  21. Smashsquatch Says:

Thanks for the laughs this morning Joe, it snapped me out of boredom. I wonder if Todd gets bored? The Rams game was quite boring for me, but I have to say, as hard as it is to admit, kudos to Bowles for at least trying something different. Of course it was typical Murphy’s Law, but at least he appeared to ditch the wacky scheme in the 1st half. Unfortunately our front four can’t get pressure without the help of disguise, or additional blitzers. I think Todd snapped out of his boredom in the second half and went back to his cloak & dagger approach. So as weird as it seems, I’m actually impressed with our HC for trying to mix it up Sunday night, and also for adjusting at half, despite getting gashed by Stafford. This fan is cautiously optimistic that enough football remains for the Bucs to peak at the end with a healthy squad. It’s always about how you’re playing in the end than the record that got you there.

  22. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

A solid arse chewing and potential job loss might help his boredom. Where is the accountability chart? He’s bored – that’s just embarrassing.

  23. thepunch Says:

Getting bored getting roasted by every receiver the other team plays.

  24. Pewter Power Says:

So that’s why tank in the middle of the season we get bored and Bowles makes excuses? I’ve never heard a coach say a corner got bored in a game when he was getting roasted by one of the best receivers in the game. Bowles is a f’ing disgrace.

  25. Allen Lofton Says:

Todd Bowles word choice of Board is a poor choice by him. There’s more to it than that. Repeated positive affirmations have been proven to work. Maybe hiring someone with positive results and experience could have the Bucs turning some of losses into actual 🏆

  26. jcscycles Says:

Bored huh? Well, the cure for that is sitting on the bench until he gets interested again.

I do wonder how Bruce Arians, Mike Vrabel, or Dan Campbell would deal with this. He played better last year, so the talent is there.

  27. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

If Zyon is the top tier athlete Bowels says he is, who had the privilege to cover a future HOF in Adams who is one of the most gifted route runners in our era was bored. Then please move on from him in that moment and allow someone with the competitive hunger to challenge Adams. Either way that said person gets toasted but at least the non bored competitive player pushes Adams with his aggressive style and just may make a play or two.

In the end this franchise was built on defense, speed, and fundamentals. We have none of that and the organization should take immediate action to fix this.

  28. Jmarkbuc Says:

Ever seen Bowles on the sideline? He is bored too.

I’m sure practice ( when they actually have one) is pretty damn boring as well. A team is a reflection of its coach. Look at the Texans and Demeco Ryans, or Vrable, or Sirriani, Campbell. Etc.

Bud Lichts free pass is up too…

  29. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

  30. Lessismore Says:

    Bored?
I’m sure he’s a great young man, but if he gets bored playing football for more money than most of us will ever see, then he doesn’t “love” the game. Maybe there’s just too many guys on the team that don’t eat, sleep and breathe football.

    It’s an insult to fans.

  31. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Bucboi

He was playing man at the goal line when Adan’s made him look like a child.

  32. CottlevilleBuc Says:

It really baffles me that someone in this position in life would get bored. Personally I would have 48 million reasons to stay focused.

Pay attention and do your job!

  33. 941bucsfan Says:

Bowles killing the franchise?? Thats a stupid comment lol. The bucs likely will finish 11-6. You know what I would have did to finish 11-6 in the decade of losing. Finishing with 10 wins with this roster would be a major accomplishment. Considering the bucs went 10-7 with bruce arians and tom brady at one point.. simmer down folks. Bucs did beat Seattle AND San Fran, so before you start with the “division is easy BS”… consider they beat 2 damn good teams

  34. Upstate NY BUC Says:

WOW!!! we have an issue in that Locker room!!! Where has Jason Licht been hiding during this 4 game losing debacle…. This is driving us fans crazy the unwillingness to provide 100% effort on the field and off!!!! Go Bucs!!!

  42. Bosch Says:

Are the Glazers hearing this nonsense? It is painfully obvious that Bowels is clueless. Yeeeesh!

  48. firethecannons Says:

Bowles defense is mind numbing to the point the participants complain of being bored–perhaps it is time for a new defensive coach.

  49. Newbie Says:

ZM is in the wrong line of work. Shame on Bucs for rewarding someone who plays “bored” with a contract.

  50. Jmarkbuc Says:

    941

    You’re dreaming

  51. Eric Says:

Truly is odd how almost every star or good defensive player has gotten worse under Bowles schematics and leadership. You see, last year nobody expected or offense to be so good but because of coaching and schematics we looked invincible many times last year. This year, again we can beat the real s–t teams, get a great qb comeback to win, but what win have we gotten attributed to coaching at all? Can’t think of any. As decimated as this roster has been ross year I get why we are losing against the best teams. However, I don’t understand why our lower rung Head Coach, average CB that got paid and now sucks and lacks motivation agitated, hurt Chris Godwin got extensions and or massive contracts but Evans, Winfield, and other stars had to wait to get that $$$$ after producing year after year which cost us even more

  52. Greg-therealone Says:

He gets Bored? He just got paid a lot of money. And hes BORED. That’s great. And hes a character guy is he? A Bucs Man?

  53. Nicholas Carlson Says:

    WTF

  54. Billy Bob Bubba Bo Baggins Says:

Something sounds off about Bowles’s narrative. It sounds like a coaching problem, not a player problem

  55. JohnQCitizen Says:

Is this some kind of psychology experiment Bowles is having with the fans? “How much BS can I say until they don’t believe it and then wonder if the fans are crazy”.

  56. FortMyersDave Says:

Bored???? Bowles said he is bored???? Man, has someone put some potent LSD into the coffee at OBP. Bowles is really grasping at straws to justify how bad his schemes are and how his players simply cannot even make a play anymore. If Bowles was not HC, he would have been fired after the Rams game just like Mike Smith got launched by the Glazers under Koetter (showing/proving that the Glazers will fire someone mid-season) and how Spytek launched Chip Kelly over in Vegas, also for basic ineptitude.

  57. Ufcguy1 Says:

He doesn’t jam anyone thats the first problem giving Adam’s a fing free release and he never turns his head and runs. This is and has been a problem for years with the corners on this team. Its insane. Ill tell you what give me two weeks and I promise you this Id have these guys either making plays or cut. Its one or the other. The utter lack of accountability is ridiculous.

  58. Que589 Says:

McCollum should be moved to the slot/nickel CB position.

  59. MelvinJunior Says:

That was THE DUMBEST fokking comment I have ever heard come out of Todd Bowles mouth, and THAT is really saying something. Bowles is stuck inside of his own head, just trying to make up EXCUSES for players. When, in realty, it only ends up looking even WORSE on HIMSELF. I mean, that comment in itself, was almost DUMBERN what McCollum AND Dennis are combined.

  60. Bobby M. Says:

He’s been in the system for 3(?) yrs now and was doing well enough to get paid a solid extension….sorry but he didn’t suddenly forget to cover, the scheme is the issue. We’ve seen this repeatedly with Davis, Dean and now McCollum. There’s something about Bowles that once the players get paid they suddenly check out. You could throw Winfield in there as well.

All these players having the exact same challenges after getting paid makes me think what’s the common denominator….its Bowles and his scheme. He doesn’t play to anyone’s natural strengths. I’ve said this for years…Dean is at his best when he can play a physical style of coverage. Bowles routinely puts him in cotton candy soft zone where he’s not great in disrupting the players. Winfield is a ball hawk….so why is he chasing the QB and Yaya is trying to cover down the field? Yaya leads the team in QB pressures so obviously let’s put him on a WR on a passing down. Now you got McCollum suddenly can’t cover….Bowles has these guys overthinking and not playing relaxed.

  61. MelvinJunior Says:

He sure did not look “BORED” out there the other night, while ‘trying’ to cover both Puka and Davonte Adams… He just looked totally, LOST. And, overmatched. NEVER stood even a chance. Period. End of Story.

  62. lambchop Says:

If you’re an athlete on any level, let alone Pro, and get bored while being exposed, you just don’t have any pride. Now being a pro and paid millions, you just want that check and be left alone.

It’s a reflection on coaching if you can’t get guys who are hungry to prove something playing out there.

  63. IrishTony Says:

The guy lacks a level of seriousness and it shows in his play. They might need to rethink this idea of a Bucs’ man because if McCollum’s an example then I’m very concerned.

  64. Hodad Says:

This is a player they thought was worth extending early? Did Bowles tell Licht Zyon is worth a new contract, he’s my guy, or did Licht foolishly just pay him? If they both thought Zyon was worth paying, they both need to be fired. If they both agreed Dennis was the answer at MLB, and David had gas left in the tank, they both need to go. Drafting has been poor, development worse. Glazers wake up.

  65. Canabuc Says:

I think bored is the wrong term to explain it. See everybody who has worked for Todd Bowles always talks about how complex his scheme is and how it takes a few years to really Master it and perform at a high level. They also say you need particular people to be able to run his scheme.
Well it seems for the last 3 years that players that we have while they may be Buccaneer men do not have what it takes to run this scheme. So what Todd Bowles does is blame the players when he should be blaming the scheme. If you look at every other team they manufacture and modify a defense to make best use of a player’s talents and this is why it seems every team we play against our receivers barely have any separation and are tackled nearly immediately.

Conversely every time we make good plays on first and second down and I know that the opponent is facing a third and long I can’t watch because I know they will give up the first down perfect example was McCollum giving up a pass on 3rd and 17th for a first down.

I am a huge Bucs fan and I actually would not mind if they lose out or don’t make the playoffs if that leads to the firing of Todd balls and them inserting proper staff particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

It’s quite evidence that this team will never advance very far under this current head coach. We do not have the ability to hang with good quality teams. And those that we beat it is usually on the back of a gutsy performance by Baker.

  66. Baking with Grizz Says:

Wow! Is the coach poking the Bear(fans)????

I think Arians and Gruden would have handled this differently.

This shows there is no consequense for your actions. Integrity is out the door. Let’s treat our players like college “kids!”

Make him look at his paycheck every week!!! INTEGRITY

    WTF!!!

  67. passthebuc Says:

Drafting always seems to be good on draft day, but it does not materialize on the field

  68. Baking with Grizz Says:

    Does Zzzzyon = Michael Clayton????
    Take the money and run.

  69. Jehzsa Says:

He sure wasn’t bored when he accepted a $48 million contract extension…

  70. cmurda Says:

I don’t care about Todd’s song and dances with the media. Results are the measure of one’s effectiveness as a coach. Which coach on this team would sadden you if he left? The regime is wasting the talented window to win we have right now. It would have been lovely for Jason to get some help.

  71. pelbuc Says:

Wow! These players only have to show up and do their job 17 times a year and they can’t even do that!. So tired of all the lame ass excuses. Licht has picked some real gems and to make it worse, he’s overpaid them. The Brady effect left when Brady left. These clowns feel no sense of responsivity or pride.

  72. pelbuc Says:

It’s very obvious that the coaching on this team is very bad but that’s coupled with a GM that has consistently failed at acquiring good football players through the draft and free agency. Bad coaching + bad players= bad results.

  73. Beeej Says:

At this point, trading snaps between Zyon and Morrison can’t really hurt us LOL

  74. Jmarkbuc Says:

I wonder if I went and told my boss I was doing a $hit*y job because I was bored if he’d still let me come pick up my paycheck for the week

  75. Saskbucs Says:

Of course some of these guys get bored. That’s what happens in a “we do what we do” scheme.

Maybe tailor game plans to the weekly opponent, give these guys an assignment based on matchups and simplify the responsibilities, then hold them accountable.

Sunday night was a perfect time to shake things up. Rush 3 since we can’t get home anyway and Stafford beats the blitz. Drop 8 all night and another pass catchers. Sick of Bowles and his DBs being useless half the season.

  76. Saskbucs Says:

Otton causes a pick six … next play, pass to Otton. Ridiculous. It’s like they are children and they need a pick me up after a boo boo.

Otton should have stayed on the bench for at least a series after that. Durham or Culp can’t handle his job!?

    Same with Zyon.

  77. MelvinJunior Says:

So, Todd just shrugs it off and says, well, it’s just because he’s bored… Huh, don’t look at me. Like, yeah… He’s just BORED is all. So, what you gonna do!? It’s soooo EMBARRASSING, guys! Pathetic. Making the FO and Ownership look smarter and smarter everyday LoL. What weak fools they all are. Didn’t have the GUTS to make THE ONLY real ‘logical’ decision with the coach last off-season. Could see THIS coming from a mile away! 💯

  78. MelvinJunior Says:

@SaskBucs – Yeah, it’s absurd how he NEVER holds guys accountable and ALWAYS makes excuses for poor play… NEVER ‘sits’ ANYBODY for while, and giving someone else a chance. Makes ZERO amount of sense. IT’s INSANITY.

  79. MelvinJunior Says:

For some reason he did have a REALLY BIG ‘hard-on’ for DWhite, though… Cause, HE is the only player I can ever remember him ‘sitting’ (&/or) demoting like that, for any long extended amount of time.

    Bucboi

He was playing man at the goal line when Adan’s made him look like a child.

    He absolutely did lol….

horrible technique by Zyon…gave one of the best WRs in the game a free release without trying to jam or reroute him…

imo, he’s better at man but he has poor technique, sloppy footwork and bad eyes in man or zone lol…..thats poor coaching…maybe he gets “bored” due to the lack of coaching…

with that said, after the 2nd time Adams beat Zyon, the DC shouldve doubled him or bracketed him or something…todd just let the man continue to get beat

    GO BUCS!!!!

  81. TG Says:

    Bored player = poor coaching
These are professional athletes, they only get bored when they lose faith in what they are doing/being coached.

The fact Todd openly admits he has a player getting bored, tells me he is lost

  82. G-Buc Says:

He is so bored that he won’t even bump a receiver when head up in coverage.
See Davonte Adams TD’s. Don’t tell me the coaches preach free releases for all WR … if they do then fire their asses.

How about getting physical with a WR? These guys play soft or are being coached soft. Something has to give.

  83. When is enough ENOUGH Says:

That has to be the dumbest excuse I have heard. If you are bored that means you are not getting passes towards you because you are lights out, which is not the case.

  84. MelvinJunior Says:

Just THINK… IF, we’d had a competent ‘top-tier’ HC during these last 3-4 seasons!? In THIS Division. Now, truly think about THAT… What is sooo freaking mind-blowingly STUPID though, is that Todd seriously, goes out there approaching EVERY single WEEK… The. Exact. Same. Way. EVERY Single PRACTICE. EVERY Single GAME. And, no matter WHO we are playing, either! HE. DOES. THE EXACT. SAME THING. Over & Over AND Again & Again. While, expecting and thinking that something ‘different’ will happen this next time. NOW, let that sink-in… It’s completely ABSURD. Just Total INSANITY… And, like I have never seen before. 💯

  85. MelvinJunior Says:

@ G-Buc – EXACTLY. That’s what I saw the other night… He was playing 10-yards OFF and receding. He never stood a CHANCE against those guys! They were free to just run up the field and make a tight cut whichever which way they WANTED and were 5-8 YARDS wide-ass OPEN. Just over & over AND again & again. All. Night. Long. NEVER jammed, knocked-off course, disrupted, or even forced to have to fight! Just completely FREE do to WHATEVER. It is just SO mind-blowing. It makes no sense. These guys are soooo LOST right now, they’ve given up. I mean, they’ve all been around thong enough to know tween something ain’t right!

  86. Nick2 Says:

I think if I was paid 15 million a year I’d be more than bored. What a joke.

  87. Mhystc Says:

So he told his coach he’s “ bored “ and Bowles is fine with that. How about bench his “ bored “ ass.

  88. Leopold Stotch Says:

You know I’d be bored of getting my @55 absolutely roasted play after freaking play by Adams an Nakua all darn game. Are you freaking kidding me dude? I’m bored of watching this HC and his stupid scheme, ruining these talented payers.I’m bored of this amazingly talented team have these mid-season slumps. I’m bored of this head coach making dumb excuses instead of taking responsibility for anything. If McCollum is so bored, he can find something else to do! And I like the freaking guy, I think he can be a good player! Good grief!

  89. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It is Zyon McCollum’s 4th year in the league. He’s had plenty of time to get through most of the developmental phase.

  90. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Bucboi

Like I said..and now you’ve said.. he sux

  91. firethecannons Says:

give him a few turns at nose tackle. That’ll wake him up quick.

  92. jimmy Says:

zyon cant even make good excuses for bad play. the only thing worse would be if todd said he was just feeling lazy.

  93. BucaneroJim Says:

Don’t know which is dumber, Zyon actually saying he was bored or Todd telling the press he said it. Yeah, well I got bored and snored watching both of them bored. Zyon got bored all right, in his rear by the Rams.

  94. Crazyhorse54 Says:

While this boredom statement is outrageous and discipline worthy, not a word written either about this by the Joe or by fans will have any influence on this pathetic self-centered, greedy, manipulative DB. Not a word.
What the HC reveals is a systemic personnel problem that the owners should (but won’t) get to the bottom of. Looking at the horizon, another decade of depression is swiftly coming the Buc organization’s way. BTW, by systemic it means not only the HC but also the GM.
May I ask which of you in a decision making position is so bored you make glaring mistakes would get away with it, not once, not twice, but multiple times and would still have a job? No discipline to awaken the ‘best athlete’ on the team, just leaving him in to get bored again and again and again…

  95. Miller5252 Says:

Bored and burned are similar words…. Maybe Bowles forgot the meaning of the 2??? Cause he sure didn’t look bored. He looked like he knew he couldn’t cover a high school receiver Sunday night.

  96. Gipper Says:

That wasn’t a soft zone that McC was playing on TD’s. Sun. He was playing straight up man and was beaten badly. After 2nd TD he looked like he was going to cry. No crying in football.

  97. heyjude Says:

Bored! Getting a 3 year extension with over 40 mill shouldn’t make a person bored. They should be on fire. That snippet of Zyon on Sunday night and his facial expression said it all. He didn’t look bored, but more like a defeated player. Sad to see, but that was pretty much how we were all feeling at that time too.
