Some Bucs fans out are outraged at Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard. Joe knows these fans think the Bucs’ offense, thought to be a strength, is just meh. If that.
In yards per game, the Bucs rank No. 20 in the league. In total yards, the Bucs are No. 24. That’s the bottom-third of the NFL.
In scoring per game, the Bucs are 14th overall, the best of the offensive categories.
That’s not what fans expected from the offense. Last year, Tampa Bay had one of the best offenses in the league.
Asked to evaluate his performance through the first 11 games of the season, Grizzard spoke of challenges.
“I think everybody goes through challenges in the NFL no matter what it is,” Grizzard said. “I know we’ve had our fair share for sure. And I’ve talked a little bit about it — it is a challenge, but it is something that I do find enjoyment in.
“I think the offensive staff finds enjoyment in [challenges], as well, because of the fact that these guys that are playing and stepping up, it’s their opportunity to go prove themselves and prove they belong and prove they can make plays.”
Joe thinks Grizzard has been in a no-win situation. In his first year as a play-caller and his offensive line was ravaged by injuries, then he lost his Hall of Fame receiver and his No. 1 rusher.
Grizzard has never had his starting-five offensive linemen together on the field.
Grizzard didn’t want to hear any excuses. Even with so many injuries, he believes his offense has enough talent.
“We have more than enough ability to beat the team we’re playing,” Grizzard said. “It’s on us to put these guys in a position to go make plays.”
Joe likes the confidence of Grizzard but Joe doesn’t think it’s fair to make any sort of full assessment on Grizzard. A veteran offensive coordinator would have challenges when four starting offensive linemen get hurt, your Hall of Fame receiver gets hurt and your No. 1 running back gets hurt.
Even Sean McVay would have a battle on his hands with those speed bumps.

I get it, he hasn’t ever had the offense he was given. But what has he done with the offenses he has put out. A few good games but lately, uninspiring, predictable, ugly football.
As soon as Baker stopped putting his body on the line on 3rd downs, Grizzard’s playcalling has been exposed. He hasn’t been a good play caller of late (I can’t comment on earlier games because I haven’t gone back and looked).
In his defense though, Bowles has screwed him. The play of the defense has not helped at all.

The defense handed him the ball on the five yard line to start the game in Buffalo. Didn’t do squat.
It took 9 plays from the one in New Orleans to score a touchdown. 7 of them dives up the gut.
There’s plenty of fault to be found with the Grizz.

I have to think part of the predictably is due to not just injuries but constant changes in personnel because of them. For an offensive play to go well you need all 11 doing the right thing. Maybe you can get away with a WR slacking, but the OL definitely needs to all be doing the right thing.
With constant changes that can shrink a playback because the question becomes, “What does the 4th string RG know, and what does he do well?”.

It seems to me, esp near the goal line, we have too many plays that move the ball away from the goal line (screens, sweeps, etc). Let’s move the rock forward.

Agree Joe. The injuries have been bad.
More ‘what-ifs’ are needed to be planned ahead of time and practiced a lot in case someone may be injured. I though Grizz was the hidden gem, but the injuries didn’t help. If he didn’t have the injuries he would probably leave for a HC job at the end of the season like others have.

Well I hope Bredeson plays today an the Bucs OLine looks way better an gives Baker time to throw an get some of the deeper shots in just let this offense cook today an please Bowles Brings some Pressure on Brissett he is not a big runner so don’t have to worry about getting beat deep the only person I’m worried about is McBride but Bowles should put Izien at LB to cover McBride today not let Dennis get Exposed

Agree with Joe. Even a veteran play caller would have a challenge on his hands with as many starters out as we had. A first year playcaller? A really big challenge. I understand but still disappointed.

Get rid of shizzard. Horrible play calling and no creativity 🗑️
