Blame Carlton Davis
November 13th, 2025Former Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis got payback.
In March of 2024, the Bucs shipped out Davis, a Bucs long-time starting cornerback, to Detroit. Davis, like most people living in Florida, wasn’t happy about leaving.
And Davis hurt his old team Sunday, to hear Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard.
Today, Grizzard endured his weekly press conference. He was asked about a failed Bucs two-point conversion against New England.
Baker Mayfield threw a short pass to Tez Johnson to the right side from 10 yards out to pull within 21-16 late in the third quarter. The Bucs decided to try for two in an effort to make the difference a field goal. Emeka Egbuka took a reverse and sprinted to the right. It looked to Joe at the time that the target was supposed to be Baker Mayfield as he was briefly open along the right sideline.
But there was too much traffic from the Patriots’ defense to throw.
Grizzard admitted today that is exactly what he wanted: a pass to Mayfield for two. And Grizzard fingered Davis for blowing the play up.
“Unfortunate,” Grizzard said of the failed conversion. “Very unfortunate. Carlton Davis, he saw it.
“He just stayed on the backside of that. We were trying to throw it to Baker.”
So Joe was right: Mayfield was the intended target. Grizzard didn’t comment further about the play, other than to say, “It did not work.”
So Davis came home again Sunday. And got a measure of payback.

Terrible play call, you want to throw to our QB for 2 while you got a man the size of Payne Durham who’d be a mismatch against most DBs in close quarters.

Dude always look levitationaly high.

It was way too early to go for two. Another poor in game decision by Bowles.

Had no issues going for two on the play, but did not like the playcall at all. Of course if it worked, he’s a genius, but we see that play called too often in that situation to really catch teams by surprise anymore.

Payback, for what?
This franchise overpaid and made him a multi millionaire…

No it wasn’t, not like we were out there scoring at will. Deficit was 11 points or 8+3, we didn’t score another TD until 4 possessions later.

So throw the ball anyways and let Baker try to make a play.

Going for two was the right call. On an unrelated note, PFT has a good article about annual player surveys, “some owners” want them gone, I love them.

My guess is baker requested it. He ran it successfully a few times in Cleveland…

The Philly special is such a common play on 2 point conversions, pretty much every team is being told to keep an eye on the QB and to watch for it.
Again, no issues with going for it, it’s the correct call in the modern NFL where kickers are supposed to make 60-yard FGs, but the call was not a good one.

NE fans still want Davis gone lol. Same tune as with us. Always injured – doesn’t produce

Bucs have Bills, Rams and Cardinals next three. Will probably be 6-6. I don’t think this team will win the division. We need offensive line help desperately. Last drive last week you could see it coming a mile away. We were on the 30 with the game on the line and couldn’t get 2 yards . Sheez. The Patriots looked like Ravens defense. We couldn’t block them for anything.

Yeah, No.
He was not the deciding factor in the game by any real measure….

Dude goes into a coma when we get around the goal line. It’s crazy.

Carlton Davis was our best man-to-man CB by miles, and we let him walk. Very disappointed. I understand injuries and availability played a role in that, but still. Could’ve used him the last few years.

@warrenbrooks…. I’ve preached the same thing all year. Durham had 21 red zone TDs in college. In the Big10. Purdues Head coach would put him in a slot or even out wide and throw him jump balls all day! Instead we run the Philly Special to throw to 6 foot tall Baker who has a 1 inch vertical jump. Read Durhams metrics. 6’6. 84” wingspan. 35” vertical jump. Ex Lacrosse player with good hand eye. Throw him the biscuit for a 2 point conversion. Or to Cade. Or to Culp . Of ffs split Charlie Heck out wide!!
