Baker Mayfield: Last Time He Tried To Practice Scrambling He Got Arrested

November 4th, 2025

Chats with Eli and Peyton Manning.

Quarterbacks who scramble generally do so spontaneously, if they have to. Just ask Baker Mayfield.

The Bucs quarterback was on the Manning Bros. Show last night, seen by non-YouTubeTV customers on one of the BSPN family of networks.

(Yes, Joe is a victim of BSPN’s racketeering and didn’t get to see Mayfield live — but Joe does still have Twitter.)

Given the fact the Manning Bros., Peyton and Eli, were less than fleet-footed quarterbacks, Eli was asking Mayfield about scrambling.

They showed the highlight of Mayfield scrambling for a key first down against the 49ers and Eli asked Mayfield when he knew he had a shot at a first down.

Mayfield deadpanned, “Right there,” when the highlight showed Mayfield falling past the first down marker. Eli, always a fan of sarcasm, then asked Mayfield if he practices scrambling.

Yeah, Mayfield said, he used to. But the last time he tried didn’t end well.

“I tried one time in Fayetteville, Ark.,” Mayfield said. “It didn’t go too well. I wound up getting arrested.

“But I’ve improved since then.”

The Manning Bros. clearly enjoyed Mayfield’s response.

The way Mayfield eludes would-be tacklers, Joe is happy he doesn’t try to practice it. Don’t fix something that’s not broken.

They also showed the clip where Baker poked fun at Emeka Egbuka for the one-handed grab against the Jets:
    “He disrespected my catch!”

And Eli responded with a completely straight face:
“I couldn’t agree more with you, Baker. Odell did the same thing to me…”

  2. heyjude Says:

Love it! Yes, Baker has definitely improved since. So glad he is our QB!

  3. Marky mark Says:

That arrest was a big red flag for some teams. When he was down and out in Carolina people compared him.to Manziel.

  4. Pickgrin Says:

Really hoping the week off was enough time for Baker’s knee and oblique injuries to heal significantly.

Mayfield was not the same QB at all the last 2 games compared to the first 6 weeks when he was basically the best (or at least ‘most valuable’) QB in the entire league.

Those injuries took away his ability to scramble/run and also affected his passing accuracy as way more balls than normal were sailing on him vs Lions and Saints.

  5. Todd Says:

    Agree with Pickgrin entirely.

  6. garro Says:

Hope he does not have to scramble for the rest of the season. But Go Baker!

    Go Bucs!

  7. heyjude Says:

Have to agree with Pickgrin too. Noticed it too.

Baker being full of grit will keep on rolling no matter how much soreness he is in. Hope the bye gave him that needed rest and rehab. Love seeing him scramble, but no more injuries or close calls.

    Lt. Dan too. 🤬🤬🤬

I hope it’s like the end of 2023 where he got hurt in the Saints game, limped through the Panthers then lit up the Eagles in the playoffs

Now that Goedeke is going to be back, hoping we can run the ball effectively, that would help everyone.

When you look at the video of him being arrested he took off running from the cops it was classic. This really dorky looking young cop tackled him into a concrete wall so hard it almost broke Mayfield’s ribs. Hilarious. But humbling. Not appreciated in OU locker room. He learned his lesson though. Then put together arguably the best season statistically of any QB in college football history. And capped it off with a Heismann. Baker Mayfield does things like that. The chances that we finish this season strong- and I mean strong- are high. He has many, many games on his resume that scream All Time NFL elite. And very, very, few games he’s ever laid an egg. Still believe the top seed is ours to lose.

He has people to throw to. More than Brad Johnson did for us.

Still about 5 hours till the deadline.

Jakobi Meyers for a 5th or 6th please.

    RE: ESPN Racketeering.

Google profited 100.1 Billion Dollars in 2024. YouTube TV has 9.4 Million subscribers. At $82.99 per month, Google took in $9,361,272,000 from YouTube TV for the year.
If YouTube TV was completely free, Google would have still profited $90,738,728,000 in 2024! Holy hell, Google.

This is not intended to excuse ESPN’s desire to raise fees, but it’s not alone in the racketeering.

  20. Not My NFL Says:

@ 813 — If Baker didn’t scramble we’d be 2-6 right now lol get real man!

  21. Aqualung Says:

Todd, please intervene with your rookie OC, the disaster of a matador line, and the 1970s pee wee football offensive design.

Or else Baker goes to the hospital and you’re not the OC whisperer anymore. You have a war chest of evidence from last year’s film, demonstrating offensive excellence. Surely some of that goodness can be applied/modified to the current.

    Git-r-done.

  22. Mobucs Says:

Can anyone find that dorky looking young cop? People who can tackle like that aren’t easy to get.

  23. James Geschwender Says:

I think Joe should be arrested for writing this article . His next article should be about Mayfield’s toilet paper is it over or under

An overdose of imbecillin causes embarrassing and baseless hyper-enthusiasm, excessive use of capital letters and exclamation marks, and prevention of any knowledge of how the game of football works. Some should lay off this dangerous med
