Baker Mayfield Is Unhappy, Says Bucs Came Out “Flat”

November 9th, 2025

The franchise quarterback is not a happy man, dropping expletives on the Buccaneers Radio Network after today’s throttling by the Patriots.

Baker Mayfield shared his disappointment, noting the Bucs have too many players that know how to play and prepare “to come out here flat.”

Joe’s not sure why Mayfield said the Bucs were flat to open the game. In fact, the Bucs scored a touchdown on their opening drive and stopped New England on their first possession. But Joe understands a broader look; the Bucs looked softer and less hungry than the Patriots.

“We didn’t do nearly a good enough job on the fundamental things,” Mayfield added.

Fundamentals also were a focus of head coach Todd Bowles after the game. Bowles said the Bucs’ loss came down to poor fundamentals, “especially the fundamental things they do every day.”

Poor execution and lack of offense

Defense gave up big plays but gave the offense opportunities to cash in….grizz and baker are not in sync

White and tucker ran well but grizz never stuck with the run

    GO BUCS

  2. JustOneGame Says:

Fundamentally, you should hit open receivers. Lets start there

  3. Ben Says:

Isn’t this the hallmark of Todd coming of a bye week? EVERY year the Bucs come off the bye week sleepy 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

  4. Rick Says:

Bowles outcoached again – and Grizz sucks.

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Actually they came out on the first series and got a TD, I thought they looked good. It was everything after that that was the issue, at least until the garbage time drive.

With that said Baker was OK today, and give him Evans, Godwin and Bucky and it’s a different game. This was just a defense who played an excellent game and mostly had very good coverage.

Also, cut Shepard, he sucks, and if anyone cost the team the game, it was that bum with one of the dumbest offensive PI pick plays I’ve ever seen. He’s washed up, slow, can’t get open and makes dumb mistakes. I know there’s no one left on the depth chart, but make the move anyways, let Miller play some more, give Culp a roster spot even – or better yet call up Greene who looked amazing in the preseason. But that bum Shepard off the team.

Oh and while you’re at it, cut the punter, that guy is also a bum.

  6. RuKa_44 Says:

This is the result of an extended leave during the bye week. So long for the “Todd knows how to read the locker room and understood the best for the players was to have a full week off”…. 😉

  7. ModHairKen Says:

It’s over now. Fix it next week.

Thankfully, Panthers and Falcons also FTD.

Todd is now 1-6 in bye weeks as a HC. That’s just pathetic honestly.

the Buccaneers just sucked today; those final stats by Mayfield are very deceptive! He threw to the players all day, mostly…especially on that 4th & 3 late in the game. White was wide opened out of the backfield, but Baker threw it to Otton with 3 Patriots draped on him… Mayfield just seems to be determined to throw to one player regardless the coverage…The Bucs will lose to the Bills & the Rams and barely squeak out winning the South…just the same old, same old, as usual….

  21. Miller5252 Says:

Hope he was cussing at himself because he was part of the problem as well. Forcing balls and not coming off EE to wide open guys. Maybe he should use some of that fire during the game. Might want to use it on his line as well. The D got a TO for him when it was needed the most and Baker crapped the bed on the series

  22. james sheehan Says:

The defense played great except for two big splash plays. But if you can’t make three yards in two plays at the end of the game you don’t deserve to win. We had it!

I’m no Baker Boi, but you’re wrong. Baker was fine today – he just flat out didn’t have guys open. He’s got one NFL caliber starting WR, who went over 100 yards and got a TD – and Tez had a nice day as well but he should be a 4th or 5th. Shepard is completely useless … and who else is left at WR, the only other guy to throw to is Otton.

There are times when Baker deserves the bashing, like that awful Lions game where he was flat out missing guys, but today wasn’t one of those bad days.

  24. Jmarkbuc Says:

Midseason slump has arrived.. right here at midseason

  25. Rover Says:

Only so mcuh you can really do without “dudes” on your team. All of ours are on Pseudo-IR.

  26. Jmarkbuc Says:

And now we get to go up to cold Buffalo and face a team that just got throttled by hapless Miami.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think Mayfield is still sore. Another week of reduced practices should heal him up the rest of the way.

The team is as fired up as he is…and he wasn’t.

  28. Jmarkbuc Says:

Grizzard in WAY over his head

  29. richbucsfan Says:

The key fundamental is to have a FO who can hire an experienced OC. Grizz is a JL HOPE hire. Enough of this stupidity. This isn’t JV football. The guy has never called a down before this season. Whoever would think a total rookie at a key position as OC would succeed? These next two losses are going to sting … a lot.

  30. Big D Says:

Big D says play calling was terrible. Very predictable. Can’t understand why Bucs couldn’t get 3 yards on two downs there at the 2-minute towards the end of the game. Running game was abandoned.Hopefully a better outcome will happen next week

  31. Gipper Says:

Tell me again what a great job the Defense did. Same old big play story. NE had over 430 total yards and fools here will tell us that the defense is just fine. It isn’t. Meanwhile the Bucs are missing two high priced WR’s and playing guys 3 deep.

  32. 941bucsfan Says:

I beg to differ.. bucs offense came out on fire.. and the defense came out with a stop.

  33. Waterboy Says:

They didn’t look flat on that 1st offensive drive of the game they look like they lacked offensive adjustments after that.

  34. BigZ Says:

JL missed the pirate ship to give this team a shot in the arm at just about all positions except secondary. We needed a dawg. But hey let’s keep those Braswell, JTS, Gay, Camaratta, Hargreaves, etc.

And… to think no other injuries will occur is foolish.

Hey the pats line yields over 3 sacks a game. How many did we have? TB and JL know that you can’t always get pressure with the blitz.

  35. Proudbucsfan Says:

No reason for it, this is where we lose 3 in a row

  36. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

It felt more like they came out strong and went flat for the rest of the game. I’m waiting for another angry Baker run that fires everyone up.

  37. jcscycles Says:

I 100% agree with Rod.We just do not have any receivers outside of Ebuka, Tez, and Otton. If Mike had not gottem hurt things woud have been different.

Funny everyone wants to fire Grizz. Last month you were worried somone would hire him away after the season was over.

Pats have a really good team that is well coached. Give them their props. We won’t have that problem playing the Panthers, Saints, or Dixie Chicks. If we get Mike back we should be good. Bucky woud be a bonus.

The defense gave Baker the ball, 3 times in a row in the 4th quarter with a chance to take the lead, and Baker turned that into 0 points.

    The defense did it’s job.

  39. ElioT Says:

They’re going to get crushed by the Bills, Rams and end up at 6-5.

Too many injuries to an already suspect group of talent with few Alpha level players.

**Do we have a single player another team would give up a 1st or 2nd round pick for?

The Bucs lack in killer instinct and THAT COMES DIRECTLY FROM THE HC!!!!

The team BADLY needed help prior to the deadline and Jason Lichtmyballs did nothing so we can draft more Logan Halls

  40. Farmer Says:

Has Grizzard forgot about how good of a recieving back White is? White is terrible up the middle, he’s a 3yrd a run guy but screen passes to the outside are where he excels and I might be blind but I’m just not seeing it.

  41. BucksNBucs Says:

I agree with Rod mostly. it’s not on baker, though
he had to get rid of the ball quicker sometimes and not get sacked.
no excuse on 3rd & 3 in 4 down territory not to get a 1st down.

Defense again: 28 points is too much. can’t we hold anyone under 15????
good plans by Bowles & AWJ was great but Zyon Mccallum, SVD, &
Tykee were always getting beat and Drake maye showed them up…

I 100% agree with Rod.We just do not have any receivers outside of Ebuka, Tez, and Otton.

    ———

Well, no, I’m saying he’s got one starting receiver in e2 – that’s it.

Tez is nice as a depth WR, but he shouldn’t be starting and playing this much. That’s no knock on Tez, but he’s a 7th round rookie, and he’s starting. That’s not something you want to be doing, not at his size (and that’s not a knock, I like him, but just as a 4/5 type of guy – like Humphries when he was here). Will be interesting to see the ALL22 and if he was able to get open when/if Carlton Davis was on him, or if he was just getting the ball when they were in zone.

Otton has never really stepped up beyond being a reliable TE, which is fine, but he’s not going to have monster games or make big plays.

Shepard is just trash, washed up, slow, making dumb mistakes, yet Baker keeps targeting him. Might do better to get him off the field so Baker stops throw it his way.

  43. Jodibrown74 Says:

He’s mainly to blame with his unwillingness to run for easy 1st down pick up when the game is on tge line. He instead forces passes to covered wr when others are open. Baker is who everyone knew he was. Where is the swagger and moxey at?

  44. SBucs Says:

Todd has no heart. His team lack heart.

  45. Hodad Says:

436 yards of offense! Two long explosive TD runs! That is not good defense Rod! The offense was just as bad! Both sides are to blame! Ultimately it’s up to the HC to have his troops locked in! Varbel did, Bowles didn’t! Everyone got paid in the offseason, they don’t look like they care. Inexcusable coming off a bye at home!

  46. 1buc4you Says:

Hate to say it but reminds me of the great coach Tony Dungy. He could always get them close but never over the finish line. just my opinion.

  47. Chuckys Bucs Says:

Baker is terrible. 16 td to 2 int with a rookie WR as his #1, without his top RB, and a rotating OLine. The problem is the OC.

  48. firethecannons Says:

The O line is not good and Baker is not going for it with scamper plays.

  49. Jbravo Says:

too bad we dont have jmac healthy , too bad bridgwater hung him out in preseason, tell me again why team need bridgwater? edge rusher maybe better acquisition..idk bowels has no energy or drive ..painful year after year excuses

  50. Erickson Cobb Carrier Says:

Baker is 26-20 in Tampa. 10-4 vs the NFC South and 16-16 vs the rest of the NFL. For his career he is 56-56. Age 30. 8th year. He is what he is. He is overrated AF. I’m just wondering what the excuses are for 2026? Jalen Hurts has 15 TD and 1 int with Saquon having a bad year yet everyone thinks he sucks…..after going to 2 SB at 26. You will at best get a wildcard under Baker

  51. Obvious One Says:

Ok, who teaches fundamentals? Alright, who’s job is it to MAKE SURE that the “basic fundamentals” are nice and tight?

Bowls and his weak @ss excuses have just gotten to the point of bland and boring. The Defense IS better than last year. Bowles excuses ARE NOT.

And Grizzard…. O boy what a middle of the road, mediocre play caller. He’s NOT on his way to being the next head coach of a Pro team. Maybe a high school team and THAT is Seriously debatable. Literally haven’t seen anything special, different, creative, much less cohesive from the guy.

Baker…. is being a father really breaking his mind already? He is all over the board. NOBODY is going to confuse him for “steady Eddie” anytime soon. And his shot at MVP is officially Gone Down the Drain! And there is NOBODY to blame except the guy in the mirror… FACT

Licht…. “Always tomorrow” must be his motto. HE’S WRONG! THERE IS NO TOMORROW! “Only Today”. And once again, Licht DID NOT “Seize The Day”! AGAIN!
He’s a FOOL for not Aggressively seeking weapons WHILE WE WERE STRONG WITH A FANTASTIC START TO THIS SEASON! We could have protected ourselves with additions to our wounded, and it didn’t necessarily mean “high draft picks”.

As is, even if we make it to me play offs…. it’s going to take more than the fundamentals just to get us there…

In the end… We Were So CLOSE! I guess it just wasn’t meant to be this season. Happens to a team or two every year. But WHO could’ve predicted two years in a row of massive personnel loss? We were so close…

  52. Bee Says:

Jmac’s injury was huge. Who knows if he’ll ever be the same. But not being able to get 3 yards in 2 downs when it matters most is unacceptable. Baker usually runs to get that.

  53. Erickson Cobb Carrier Says:

No,we just lowered expectations. Not too long ago with a QB in his mid 40s the motto was SB or bust. 3 years ago we get a 28 year old QB and it’s ” let win the putrid division”. We were getting smoked by Philly, got smacked by Detroit. Do you see how Detroit, the Rams and Seattle playing today? Do we EVER beat any of like that? Or do we beat Carolina 9-0 and loose to Atlanta 16-13. The 3 years I’ve watched this guy we are trailing most of the time

  54. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Fundamentals.

Like when you get the absolutely perfect onside kick from Chase and 32 and 45 don’t even try to locate the ball.. just stand there and wait for Diggs to catch it.

This coaching staff is inadequate. When you’re in week 10 and your team can’t execute fundamentals that’s on the coach.

  55. Kenton Smith Says:

Erickson Cobb Carrier. You and WBL gonna whine like little britches when Bake signs his next contract for 200 million plus. Maybe the biggest in NFL history. Hahahaha!

  56. Kenton Smith Says:

We’re good enough to win the title this year and because you don’t see it makes me think we’re probably gonna win it all this year.

  57. Mr_Barf Says:

    Duh! Fundermenthols…Derp! Unfunfundemetals..Again n Again

  58. jimmy Says:

    fundamentals. lol

  59. Noclu4u Says:

How many starters out this week? 10?

  60. Christos Says:

Sorry but all these words are excuses and we ve been hearing them a lot.
This season and the previous ones as well.
We came out flat. We didnt do our job.
I can accept that once or twice a year but we ve been hearing them after almost every game. Words are meaningless if you continue to do the same thing every game..

  61. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

Our offense looked like it was playing with 8 guys while their D looked like they had 15 on the field. We were simply overwhelmed and having backups and rookies in at WR made it much more necessary for our OC to scheme them open and do things to slow down their pass rush. Grizz was simply out-coached and our guys were over-matched at many spots. Grizz was our “3rd Down Guru” last year. How are we doing on 3rd down this year? Guys can’t get open or find holes in the zones. Everything looks out of sync and I don’t blame Baker for being frustrated. Drake Maye has been sacked 2nd most so far this year and we barely got a finger on him, so it’s not all on the offense even though the defense was good enough to win.

At least we weren’t turning the ball over all day. And Carolina and the Falcons both lost, so there’s that. But our playoff seeding is slipping away.

  62. Erickson Cobb Carrier Says:

Kenton Smith: Can you explain why in THREE years Baker is 16-16 outside the NFC South? 2023 offense was ranked in the 20s. Last year top 5. This year around 16th. Guy gets AlOT of garbage time yards and stats. Be careful talking about a 200M extension. Division won’t be putrid forever. So does your pass extend to 2026 as well?

  63. Davenport Says:

A Todd Bowles team coming out flat?
No way. When has that ever happened?

    (Only 8 or 9 times a year)

  64. Bojim Says:

    Reset now!!!!! Jeez.

  65. Joe g Says:

OC needs to be reevaluated not much imagination stops gumming the ball too psss happy good luck Bucs can lose badly next two away games
