Todd Bowles Likes The Progress Of Josh Grizzard

October 8th, 2025

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

He’s growing.

Back in training camp, Bucs coach Todd Bowles cautioned fans that new offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard won’t be in cruise control in Week 1. Grizzard was a rookie playcaller. Like all rookies in the NFL, it’s unfair to expect Grizzard to be his best right away.

A quick glance at the numbers shows the Bucs offense is improving the past three games. And, it is improving despite injuries mounting.

Gone is Mike Evans. Gone is Bucky Irving. Gone is Cody Mauch and Luke Goedeke. Yet the offense is gradually improving. In the past three games, the Bucs have had total offensive yardage of 347, 376 and 426 — again with major players going down and meeting each other in the peep show tent on the sidelines.

This demonstrates, Bowles said, Grizzard is growing into his job.

“It’s his calmness,” Bowles said when asked what he sees in Grizzard that lets him know Grizzard is settling into his job. “You get better every week.

“The first game is not gonna be like the fifth game, you know? You get a better understanding of your players. They get a better understanding of you. You get a better feel of how you call it — what you call what you won’t call — and a feel for the game.”

Bowles said the Bucs racking up 426 yards of offense at a tough place to play like Seattle, against a strong defense like the Seahawks, shows that Grizzard’s mind and creativity is beginning to blossom.

“You see it open up,” Bowles said. “It opened up for him last week.”

Bowles also added how much he likes the progress Grizzard has made through five games.

And again, the impressive thing for Joe is Grizzard doing this with bodies going down just about every week. Imagine what he might dial up when he has Jalen McMillan, Evans and Bucky back on the field?

Wish Todd could do the same on defense.

Congrats Bowles for helping Grizz in all summer. Great foundation set him for success. Also great job on the coaches for getting your group ready when one or two of your guys went done with injuries.

I love the mindset of this team.

    Let’s Go!!!!

grizzard is having success spending 5 weeks in the frying pan of regular season. it is good to see progress.

  9. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Still bottom-tier in rushing, but I did notice a couple playaction passes on 1st downs last week instead of predictable handoffs. So, that shows he’s at least reevaluating each week and starting to make progress in the run game.

I do think Grizz is doing a good job scheming the passing game, though.

  10. Baking with Grizz Says:

Let’s wait until Goedeke and MJordan are back playing to evaluate the running game from Grizzard. The best is yet to come.

    Go Bucs!!!

  11. Woodman Says:

Hey Erick the idiot how did Tucker look last week you said he is better than White. Maybe you need to reevaluate your comments.

  12. BuccoDav Says:

If only the defensive coordinator could develop at half the pace of Grizzard!

  13. Rod Munch Says:

Just for fun, I’m looking at PFF grades for the game.

You know how the top rated pass blocker for the game was?

Rachaad White (85.8), just ahead of Tristan Wirfs (85.4).

Want to guess who the two lowest rated there? Come on, you know it already…

Charlie Heck (47.5), just ahead of Sean Tucker (25.5).

I didn’t watch the ALL22 for the game, but I have seen highlights from the ALL22, and White, was as always, an excellent blocker. Better than Wirfs? LOL! No, that’s just dumb, but still, he was being tasked with blocking DE’s 1-on-1 and holding his own – same as last year.

Also, watching the game live, I did see Tucker actually step up and successfully pass block once, even others pointed it out (although they’re so dumb, they thought they were disproving the idea he’s a bad blocker, not realizing that they were enforcing the fact that him making a good block is so rare it’s actually worth noting).

  14. Tye Says:

@ BuccoDav – That ain’t about to happen!

Best one can hope for is that he retires soon.

  15. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

I already admitted that Tucker looked like crap last week.

But I do think part of that was predictable play calls when he finally got touches.

Rachaad looked better for sure, but he still didn’t freak the 50-yd rushing mark.

He was clutch, though, I’ll give him that

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Erik – Tucker is fine for his role, he’s not bad, but people act like he would be starting for almost every other team. But he is bad at pass blocking, and that’s a big reason why he doesn’t get more carries. This is his 3rd year, and there hasn’t been a ton of improvement there, and while he did make a block, he also missed a block. I actually think his best role should be as a kickoff returner, he’s done well in that role as he’s just a basic north/south runner with speed, and in a returner, that’s what I want, not someone running around causing the team to get holds and blocks in the back as they’re running east and west and not getting yards.

  17. Ron Potter Says:

With McDaniels struggling in Miami, I definitely see a path for Grizzard to be a HC in Miami unfortunately. And after watching Coen’s Jags defeat the Chiefs last Monday, I foresee a future where the Bowles coaching tree and Jason Light could be icons for the whole state of Florida! I wonder if either would run for Governor of Florida in the not too distant future lol

  18. Rod Munch Says:

I think I’ve been as high on him as anyone here, but lets slow down on him getting a HC job next year. He’s got a long ways to go before he gets into that talk. Keep in mind it was only a week ago a bunch of people in the comments here were complaining about him and already starting the talk about him needing to be replaced.

I’ve pointed out repeatedly it’s hard to do much with all the injuries on the offensive line as it never allows you to get into any sort of flow. Also it’s worth mentioning the Seahawks were missing 2 Pro-Bowl defensive backs, then early in the game lost a 3rd DB who was starting in place of one of the injured guys. Listening to Seahawks podcasts (to hear them cry – and I’d give a B- for crying, they sort of tried to fall back on Darnold being good and injuries – as if the Bucs didn’t have even more injuries), they said the defense was playing some very simple zones because of all the injuries, and the Bucs took advantage of that.

What will be interesting is when we get back Luke, that should hopefully really settle down the line and get the run game going. With Bucky and Evans, and then McMillan back, if we can avoid losing other starters due to injury, that’s when things should really take off.

But people shouldn’t get too excited about taking advantage of a defense missing high end starters who had to change their scheme. Just listening to the Seahawks fans getting pumped for Darnold, not talking about how he took advantage of the Bucs playing soft zone because of all the injuries, and how they think he leveled up (he didn’t, even beats up on Bowles when he plays that soft zone crap).

Not dismissing Grizz, he did his job, you should take advantage of opponents weaknesses – but we need to see what Grizz does vs top defenses that are healthy, in particular when the Bucs have more guys back – in particular Luke, who I think will make a huge difference in the run game.

  19. Aqualung Says:

And we see the defense regressing. Getting worse every game. Way to go, Frodd.
