“The NFL’s Most Underrated Cornerback”

October 5th, 2025

Rare national praise.

In the Tampa Bay area, Joe seems to think cornerback Jamel Dean is the most disliked player on the Bucs.

At least nationally, there is one pro-Dean analyst. And that is Chris Trapasso of CBS.

How pro-Dean is Trapasso? He recently put out a TikTok video breaking down film of Dean. This video was published prior to the Bucs’ loss to the Eagles where — guess what? — Dean went down with an injury.

“Which was a fine illustration of the plant-and-drive explosion and recovery speed that Dean has shown since his rookie season in 2019,” Trapasso said. “You could make the case that Dean is the most steady corner since his rookie season in 2019. But he hardly gets any love.”

No, but he sure does get hate.

Look, Joe is the first person to raise a hand and admit to being fed up with Dean. Not because of his play, but because of his availability. That’s the only reason why Joe wanted the Bucs to move on.

In the last four playoff games in the fourth quarter, Dean was not on the field. In three of those games, the Bucs lost by one score. Don’t think it would have helped if the Bucs had their No. 1 corner on the field in the fourth quarter?

If a guy consistently misses a team’s most important games and moments, what’s the point?

But since the Bucs haven’t washed their hands of Dean, Joe will defend him — for his play on the field, not for his inability to stay on the field.

The Bucs were 1-4 in games Dean did not start last year. And no, Joe does not believe in coincidences in the NFL.

As Raheem Morris once said, “I will tolerate you until I can replace you.” That’s where Joe is with Dean. So will that be Jacob Parrish or Benjamin Morrison? Only time will tell.

Interestingly, not only is Dean out for today’s game in Seattle, so too is Morrison, who had hamstring issues since training camp.

Agreed Joe. He’s a hell of a player when he’s on the field.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Like Carlton Davis, Dean was drafted to be an aggressive man corner, not stand around 15 yards off the scrimmage in zone like Bowles has been plaguing the defense with the last few years. Use him properly, and he’s a good corner.

  3. Timbucs2 Says:

Morrison = Dean 2.0 (including fragility)

So he’s going to be a starting corner for a Super Bowl winning team?!? I’ll take it!

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Speaking of the SB, do people remember who lead the defense in tackles and TFL’s that game?

The other guy people hate for no legit reason, Devin White. Had 12 tackles (next closest player had 6), 2 TFL’s and a pass defended.

  6. Cometowin2 Says:

Wish Devin would have kept playing anywhere close to that. A Josh Freeman type collapse.

People were non-stop bashing him at the time as well. Also his play was fine, but like with Dean, and Davis and others, Bowles changed the aggressive man defense into this passive zone trash he ran for years, and these guys were not drafted to run that. White, his last year here, was still very effective when he was attacking – but standing around in zone he got exposed as that’s not what he was good at.

    BTW, where is White now?

Well, he’s starting for the Raiders, and has 35 tackles, with 5 TFLs. If he had those stats on the Bucs, he’d be leading the team in both categories.

  8. adam from ny Says:

yes i’ve been peeping DW all year…

he’s having a bit of a revival over there in vegas…at least for now

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Rod … You got me curious about Devin White. According to Spotrac, since leaving the Bucs after the 2023 season, White made $1.1 mil with the Texans in 2024 and is now with the Raiders making $1.2 mil for this year. That’s eating a lot of humble pie.

  10. LawrenceDawsey Says:

Dean is really really good. Not great bc he always gets injured and he lacks in the takeaway department. He gets too much hate by people that don’t know football.

  11. Tony Says:

    Maybe the most injured CB.

  12. Todd Says:

I guess Spytek and Brady still saw something in Devin. The real Devin was Devin Lloyd who Licht traded back for Hall and eschewed drafting Devin Lloyd who has turned into a heck of a Mike LB in Jville. Big whiff there JL.

  13. FrontFour Says:

I’ve always been a Dean fan but frustrated like everyone else by his injuries. And then the most over hyped guy McCollum gets his bag of gold with people calling him our #1 CB. Name one WR1 THAT guy has ever shut down. At least Davis used to consistently shut down WR’s. We don’t have that type of CB anymore and not since Davis left.

  14. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Dean doesn’t have a shred of dog in him. Sooner the Bucs don’t have to deal with him the better IMO.

  15. Hodad Says:

Dean looks like an ironman compared to Morrison. Dean made 3 games in a row as a starter before getting hurt. Morrison is out after 3 games playing spot duty. I have a bad feeling Morrison will have more trouble staying on the field than Dean. That’s saying something. I don’t see this kid having much of a career, because I don’t believe he’ll ever stay healthy. Good thing they doubled down in the draft, because they found a winner in Parrish. Hope I’m wrong, but Morrison seems like damaged goods.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Morrison will be fine. Dean will be fine.

Blame the NFL Rules focused on protecting offenses for the injuries. That and the practice rules have softened everyone up.

Injuries are a part of the game. Rosters need to expand to compensate for them.

  17. heyjude Says:

Great to see the play again. Dean is the defender!

  18. No Mercy Says:

Jamel is so good, wonder how good he will play this week

  19. Cybersecurity_intern Says:

So he is like Carlton Davis, he is better for a different type of defense. What happened to Davis after he left Tampa?

  20. Bosch Says:

Didn’t Morrison have injury issues in college? I seem to read all that concern being raised on this site when he was drafted? Or was it Parrish? Or both?

  21. Joe Says:

Didn’t Morrison have injury issues in college?

    Several.

  22. BigZ Says:

I felt Dean would have a good year; he was do and the restructuring of his contract will do wonders when FA is dangled in front of him. However, the old injury bug crept up on him…. again and again. We need him this year…

  23. orlbucfan Says:

Devin White got a big head along with a SB ring. That’s why he’s gone. He forgot about humility and being part of a team. Looks like he had to eat a little crow, and Vegas got him cheap. Parrish will be a star DB who I am pulling for. Hopefully, Dean can recover very soon.

He was traded to Detroit where he helped them win the regular season, before getting hurt going into the playoffs, and of course Detroit choked losing to the Redskins.

Then he signed a big money deal with the Patriots.

  25. GoneGator Says:

Dean is one of the best corners in the league.
Morrison WILL BE one of the best corners in the league if he can stay healthy.

Morrison had a congenital issue with his hip (repaired) as well as shoulder surgery (off-season). Currently he has a hamstring.
