Tez Johnson Says TD Catch Was “Routine”

October 12th, 2025

Rookie receiver Tez Johnson.

When’s the last time the Bucs had a rookie seventh-round pick doing an on-field postgame interview on ESPN TV?

Well, it happened today.

Receiver Tez Johnson was being grilled by Jeff Darlington about his thrilling 45-yard touchdown pass. (Video below)

Johnson caught the deep shot at full extension and landed in the end zone. It was his first career touchdown.

“It was just routine from practice. We already rehearsed that catch,” said the 160-pound rookie. “So it was just normal for me. So when I caught it, it was just like, ‘Oh my God, I caught it.’ But it felt good, though.”

Later in the locker room, Johnson said he heard the “MVP” chants on the field after his catch. Johnson said he asked fellow receiver Sterling Shepard why the fans were yelling for him. Johnson said he quickly was advised those were for Baker Mayfield.

Johnson told ESPN that Mayfield is the MVP. “I’ve never played with a guy like that, ever, that shows that competitiveness.”

Glad that was routine to him, cuz we may need much more where that came from based on our wr injuries

  2. Irishmist Says:

What our Johnsons lack in size is made up for by performance.

  3. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I want to see a story on SVD being benched….AGAIN! I think it is time to STOP the SVD experiment at ILB wearing the ear piece.

  4. Aqualung Says:

Totally thought he was overthrown. One of several outstanding plays in a full team win. Just excellent.

  5. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

Big stage doesn’t seem too big for Tez. Just a playmaker!

    Sweet backflip with that twist!

Tony dungy said he’d be a great player

Does anyone know where Tez played college football?

  8. JimBobBuc Says:

A crazy catch, catching the back half of the ball!

  12. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Didn’t Aqualung tell us how this kid was way too small to play in the NFL?

  13. mj Says:

that was a really difficult catch finger tip maintain position roll on your side full speed, so impressive!!

  14. Geno711 Says:

Scotty, I don’t think he was benched. I think Todd knows that Jones is better in some obvious passing situations and takes SVD out on those plays.

Not sure that Jones is a run tackling stud. Just better on pass defense.

    Yes @Alvin

Tez is like Dardung. A feel good cheer for guy. But he sucks. Is gonna suck. He’s an idiot in game situations. Like his head coich

One of his many excellent calls – Lol

  16. BigMacAttack Says:

If you want to be entertained just watch Tez highlight reels on YT from his time at Oregon. That pretty much paints the picture. 31 teams overlooked him because he sandbagged his 40 time. Supposedly he didn’t care about draft position because he wanted to play with Bucky in Tampa. Emeka went down and it was Tez time. But I like how Romo and Nance said Johnson & Johnson time. Another flat out awesome win for Tampa.

  17. GoneGator Says:

Yes @Alvin, Yes he did 😉

Guys great at predictions – Lol

  18. BigMacAttack Says:

Dennis missed his first cover assignment but made some really good tackles after that. I’m not sure he’s in good enough shape yet for a full 4 quarter game. He’s trying though and getting better.

Gruden is hilarious, I gotta give him that. Someone should remind Chucky that Dextette Jackson of App State didn’t exactly crush the league when he was running out of bounds and ducking for cover, and Tezzette is the same only smaller, with a lost punt returner’s gig and dropped can of corn to his resume’ so far.

  22. Rob Says:

Tez believes he’s “that guy.” He has the confidence of a 1st round stud because that’s who he believes he is. Love that confidence…he’s just not intimidated on the big stage, at all.

  23. Bartow Buc Says:

I’ll have to admit I had reservations about Tez during his preseason debuts. But I soon realized that I was mistaken. Tez is coached up now and making some great plays like the great TD catch and celebratory flips he made today. Go Tez !! Love the way you flash !!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Lions !!

  24. Greg-therealone Says:

It’s also interesting to me how Sterling Shepherd has taken these guys under his wing a bit. It seems like there is a little crew there of Shep and Johnson and Johnson.

  25. Jerseybuc Says:

    This team man!
Sorry impressive what there doing. Wide out injuries are absurd right now. Looks like Jason killed this draft as well.
    Best team in the NFC!!

  26. Daryl Green Says:

I’m already think about Detroit, would love to have that gm.
If Mike can’t play, I hope Dbl E hamy is just a tweak,
But if not I don’t want to see the Big three until after the bye week.

Come on men.!!! It was said they the team was already talk about Detroit after
    The Game 🤙🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

  27. Itzok Says:

I like how he threw his hand up 8 yards down field like he’s Randy Moss. Awesome catch

  28. Aqualung Says:

You 3Tards really need to get a hobby. It must be depressing, thinking you’ve got everything figured out and then looking up at your dilapidated trailer with you obese mom yelling at you.

  29. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

GoneGator, I am really enjoying your posts. Keep up the good work.

  30. Daniel Dream Says:

dez got some air on that flip- he coulda probably thrown in another twist, lol. i used to do that tumble combo back in the day i was pretty good w/it but i must admit he put mine to shame like crazy! might as well throw him some fades with them hops, i didn’t know he had it like that!
I still don’t know what happened with Meka, hope he’s ok. I grabbed some chips got back to my computer and everyone on the thread talking about him being out… i was like wth, i just saw him in the game 2 minutes ago

  31. Daniel Dream Says:

    oh man big fight snf…
off topic, can we get some damm ben-gay in the locker room? wth up with all these injuries

  32. Rod Munch Says:

    That is an insane catch.

  33. MikeBuc Says:

Slow my eye. he has two guys in full pursuit after waving his hand and he was still increasing separation while looking back.

    ———

Yeah, I pointed this out over and over again to people talking about his 40 time, all you have to do is put on his college tape and watch him running away from 2nd and 3rd round draft picks who ran 4.4x to know he’s a lot faster than his 4.5 speed. Also there’s the fact his in game speed was tracked at over 22mph, I forget the exact number, but if it had happened in the NFL he’d have had like the 4th fastest play last year.

No idea why he tested slow, but he’s clearly not slow.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

Aqualung…LMFAO you just got totally b slapped.

  36. Love-spiral Says:

Super great catch. Kid is a player!

  37. heyjude Says:

Tez was on fire. Both Johnson’s did superb.

Tony Romo was so excited about all of it throughout. The analysts chimed Johnson and Johnson!

  38. BucU Says:

I love this kid. I couldn’t be happier for him. He’s a weapon and should be used more.
