“Tez Johnson Is A Great Player”

October 25th, 2025

Rookie receiver Tez Johnson.

Joe is impressed by how many accomplished NFL players have fallen for Tez Johnson.

The Bucs’ seventh-round pick rookie receiver has 10 catches for 170 yards and 2 touchdowns.

That’s a nice start, and for a seventh-rounder, it’s very special. Johnson’s numbers would be even better if Baker Mayfield didn’t overthrow him on a bomb early this season.

Still, Johnson is raw and clearly learning, especially when it comes to the playbook and route running.

It’s all expected. What wasn’t expected is how quickly he’s opened eyes.

“Tez johnson needs the ball more and he needs to play more,” said Hall of Fame cornerback Rondé Barber this week.

Barber’s words matched the comments of potential future Hall of Fame running back LeSean “Shady” McCoy, who says the Bucs need to take more advantage of Johnson’s special skill set.

On Tuesday, four-time Pro Bowl guard Richie Incognito says the jury is in. “Tez Johnson is a great player,” he told The Arena — Gridiron this week.

Barber’s comments came on the WFLA show that bears his name; McCoy’s take was on Speakeasy, where he was very emphatic about the talent and juice Johnson and fellow Bucs rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka provide.

Joe is very intrigued to see how Johnson develops with more playing time, which he’ll get with Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan gone for weeks.

The Bucs’ 2025 draft class has had a heck of a start.

  1. Aqualung Says:

Outside of one on the Lions pressed him into submission. Maybe if Gizzard puts him in motion and implements some creativity good things can happen, but after the nightmare on MMF it’s pretty certain Bowels will order him to run more than pass and half of those are up the middle. It’ll be Deja Vu to Canalwurst.

  2. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Is Ritchie available to play RG tomorrow?

  3. Danny Mac Says:

It’s a shame we didn’t get to see what David Walker could have offered on defense. We could use his potential right about now. Another great draft by JL.

  4. GoneGator Says:

Tez certainly has skills. Electric with ball in his hands. Great release. Good (great?) hands. Big hops, extremely quick feet.

He’s such a kid. Needs to build confidence but try to avoid cockiness if he’s successful.
He’s going to make some mistakes but he couldn’t have better mentors than Mike, Chris, Shep and the rest of the WR room.

Rooting for him as a person and for the teams sake.

  5. Bucs 95 Says:

The jaguars are shopping brian thomas jr

  6. Bartow Buc Says:

No doubt Tez is a great receiver. I was a little worried when in the Lions game he seemed to be out of place on at least two plays. But then, by golly he scored the Bucs only touchdown, and should have had another had Baker not missed him in the end zone !!
If Rhonde Barber says Tez is great and deserves more playing time, that’s good enough for me !! I would not be surprised at all to see Tez score one or more TDs against the Saints !! He may not be a speed merchant but he’s so quick no one can wrap him up !!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Saints !!

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Great draft class

  8. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Tez is a player. He has game speed. He also has good hands.

  9. Bojim Says:

I admit he has contributed better than I thought he would. Keep it up. You are well liked too!!

  10. BucsfaninOregon Says:

The last two years the Bucs have drafted two undersized players from U of Oregon. Both were long shots and both have/are turned out to be “catches”. This year they are loaded again. Look at the TE and some others in the 7pm your time. Oregon – -Wisconsin.

  11. GP Says:

Perhaps now we know the real reason he was taken off of punt/kick return duties

  12. Tony Says:

They need to use him & Kameron more. You can tell they both have the potential. I always said Kameron had the potential, too! He’s got the potential to be similar to what Devin Hester was to where he could be back there returning everything on special teams & he could be used as a WR, too!

  13. Tucker Says:

Is there much of a choice considering all the wr injuries he will see a lot of playing time. Study them routes bro that running into your own players multiple times kinda wild lol

  14. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

I don’t remember who here called him the Tezmanian Devil, but I like that. He’s a little wild and raw but has definitely shown some skills. And the whole MVP story and his back story with the Nix family is great. With ME and CG as mentors, I have high hopes for him. Great addition to the Bucs family.

  15. Jerseybuc Says:

I agree with lung on this one. Really hope they don’t try to over correct n run the ball 60 times if it’s not working. If it’s working obviously it’s one think. Bucs are the better team and should win this matchup

  16. rriddler Says:

Once he learns not to run into other Bucs receivers, watch out!

  17. CyberDilemma Says:

Tez = Bucky as far as elusiveness and YAC potential.

  18. Aqualung Says:

Tez Johnson is very flaboyant for a 7th rounder, has made a few splash plays, and still shows what a liability he is on the field if his Deer in the Headlights OC doesn’t think before he calls a play while the little guy is in there.

The anointing oil needs to stay on the shelf. He needs some tough love. Bucs don’t have that under this regime.

  19. Aqualung Says:

All this love for the Tez is based on hope. He’s made like 3 plays. The anointing oil needs to remain in the jar.

  20. Jmarkbuc Says:

Yeah, he doesn’t even have the routes down yet. Let’s not crown him.

  21. Buddha Says:

Tom Brady was a 6th round draft choice. Purdy was a 7th.

  22. Buc king Says:

I like tez a lot..hes got good energy and a love for the game..slightly undersized but if used correctly could find a crease

  23. Stuck with Green Says:

Think it’s a little early to force feed Tez anytime soon. Does not look ready for the grind yet but coming along very well.

  24. Joe Says:

The anointing oil needs to stay on the shelf. He needs some tough love. Bucs don’t have that under this regime.

When is the last time a seventh-round pick make a few plays to help the Bucs win? And not for some 3-13 Bucs team.

  25. Daryl Green Says:

    Yea ok😏

  26. heyjude Says:

Loving Tez! Johnson and Johnson have it going. Great draft.

  27. SB~LV Says:

    Nice offensive weapon but
    He’s NO Malachi Toney

  28. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Starting to think Jalen McMillan injury is more serious than once believed.

  29. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Tez got juice!!

  30. orlbucfan Says:

Tez has great speed and coordination. He also has good hands. Hope he listens to ME13 and CG14, and doesn’t get a big head. Bake will be looking for him today. Go Tez and Bucs!!

  31. Bartow Buc Says:

I can’t wait to see some more of those end zone flips !! Tez is going to surprise us this season. Coach Bowles definitely saw his potential and has been very patient with him. Look at how he was there in a difficult game against the Lions !! Easily could have had two TDs !!

I’m rooting for our two “ Little Johnsons “ Tez and Kam !!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Saints !!

  32. Oldbucsfan Says:

We don’t have a choice but to use the guy. Who else do we have? He’s in motion 90 percent of the time he’s in there, that’s all. Maybe they’ll throw the ball his way once in a while. He’s not being utilized properly. Throw him some screens (not to our tight end Jesus!), end arounds, something that suits him. Show these other teams they have to plan for him. They can use him, he has hands and catches everything, I just don’t see what the problem is. Yes, I know running into other receivers ain’t good, and I can only assume is probably his fault, but has anyone come right out and said it was?
