Kameron Johnson “Was Just In Shock” With 34-Yard Touchdown Catch

October 12th, 2025

“Shock.”

When Bucs receiver Kameron Johnson hauled in a 34-yard touchdown pass from Baker Mayfield with 44 seconds left in the first half, even Johnson was shocked.

Johnson is the last rung on the depth ladder for wide receivers. He is mainly used as a punt return man and has had solid success in that role.

In the first half, Johnson got open down the right side, grabbed Mayfield’s pass and housed the ball the rest of the way to give the Bucs a 20-13 lead.

Why was Johnson stunned?

“I’m this wide open?” Johnson said he thought to himself as the ball was coming his way. “I was just in shock. I saw the safety press down on Cade [Otton].

“I thought he was going to bump off [Otton]. Lo and behold, he never bumped off and I was just running and I was like, ‘Oh Lord, let me see if Baker [Mayfield] just makes eye contact with me.’

“[The play] was just wide open. It was a walk-in, easy touchdown.”

Or as Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians would say, Johnson was wide-ass open. The nearest 49ers defender was some seven yards away.

Johnson is an excellent example of the Bucs’ depth.

(Joe isn’t sure when Emeka Egbuka was hurt, but the Bucs’ media relations department first announced Egbuka had a hamstring injury in the third quarter.)

Hat tip to the Bucs for having a deep roster and hat tip to Bucs coaches for having guys like Johnson ready to contribute when their number is called.

I’m gonna need a new jersey with velcro #s but damn it if our depth isn’t killer.

  2. rrsrq Says:

He had the dropsies in the preseason, but I must say he adds a dimension to this teams in punt coverage and receiving punts. Bucs investment paying off on Kam

  3. HashmarkJones Says:

This cat looks the part. Rare to see a special teams guy just look better than most of the other team’s receivers.

the team is so stacked and so deep on offense…

it’s a pleasure to watch things come this easy…

it’s never been the buccaneer way…

we’ve struggled to score, lived on field goals…etc…

it just comes so much easier now…

even TB12 must be wowed at how the team never really went into rebuild mode – and how fast we are here

Nice play, it was made to look so easy. I was thinking Shep was going to break away on his catch and run. It was a great run after catch and it seems like he just comes in and makes big plays. So many said he and Kamron should have not made the 53 man roster. Think where we be if they didn’t

    The G.M. is a keeper!!

  7. firethecannons Says:

Yup Kam made other plays as well. He really contributed while Mike and Chris was on sideline. Awesome for him, him and Tez johnson made this win possible. Lots of great plays by entire team.

I’m convinced you could hire any decent kid at Madden to be the bucs OC next year and Baker will get that kid a head coaching job.

  9. David Says:

The depth and what they’re doing with receivers number five through eight is insane
    Love it!

All I want for Christmas is them to be healthy for the second half of the season so we can watch them put up 35 + points a game on every team

  10. Mveal2006 Says:

Special teams will get you playing time elsewhere

  11. David Says:

For those of you who just watched the end of KC v Detroit… Looks like star young DB Brian Branch won’t be playing against Tampa.
Pretty sure he’s going to be suspended immediately
The league frowns on punching opposing players when the game is over and players are shaking hands

  12. Daniel Dream Says:

Johnson & Johnson always on call when injuries try to hurt, no more tears, let Baker bake! Go Bucs 🏈🏆🌎

  13. Daniel Dream Says:

i thought there was a brawl at the end of snf but it was just one guy? decent chance he gets a game suspension abd misers mnf

  14. Saskbucs Says:

@ David, I hope you are right. I immediately had that thought.

Lions secondary is already down bad, take Branch outta there and Bucs passing game should feast next week.

Nailed it Joe. Baker spotted that busted coverage super quickly. He knew that was a coverage bust and got the ball to Johnson on the money.

Tez was amazing on his catch too. Talk about fingertip catches? Then getting it tucked in before he hit the ground? Wow!

    Go Bucs!

This was a wild ride, for sure!

  17. Ugotrobbed Says:

I see our OC being wined and dined by a lot of teams at seasons end if they keep playing like this! Nooo, not another OC in 26?!!

  18. heyjude Says:

Ugotrobbed – You are probably right on that. We need this team to stay right here.

  19. eoschwartz Says:

I would say the main difference is the offense is hitting on more deep shots while under Coan it scored more effectively without big chunk plays. The fact that Baker is throwing the ball vertically and on time is a direct result of them working on these plays in practice.

Last season it looked like Baker was overthrowing guys or the players weren’t able to complete their catches. If Grizzard’s resume is to be puffed up it’s by getting Baker’s average yards per catch higher. Throws over 20 yards.

The running game has dropped from last year. It’s more of a quick strike offense.

The defense was helped by Jones’ lack of mobility. I know they had 6 sacks but he couldn’t move around very well. Good news is Goff is slower than most although he gets rid of the ball quicker than most.

    Hope Evans is 100%.
