Jalen McMillan Not Expected Back Soon

October 10th, 2025

Return unknown. (Photo taken immediately after Bucs-Steelers worthless preseason game in which McMillan injured his neck.)

This is Exhibit-37,945 why worthless preseason games must be abolished.

Back when the Bucs traveled to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers in August for a worthwhile scrimmage and a worthless preseason game, Jalen McMillan went up for a pass and was undercut by a piece of Steelers camp meat trying to make the team (classic camp meat move, trying to make a splash play).

Daryl Porter accomplished his mission and he’s now on the Steelers practice squad. Meanwhile, a key cog of the Bucs offense, McMillan, still wears a neck brace.

That’s the word from Bucs coach Todd Bowles and it sure doesn’t sound like McMillan will suit up for the Bucs any time soon.

Bowles, after practice today, was asked about McMillan. It wasn’t a comforting answer.

“I don’t know when he will return to practice, but he is getting better,” Bowles said. “He is still in a neck brace and that is about the only update right now.

“He is getting better. I cannot give you a timetable on it and I will see once he starts to do more.”

Then, when Bowles was asked if McMillan would return this season, Bowles was anything but encouraging.

“I hope so, yes,” Bowles said.

#Gulp.

McMillan suffered what was deemed a “strained neck” at the time of the injury. He was undercut and flipped over by Porter and landed on his head.

And because some UDFA defensive back went headhunting, the Bucs lost a key receiver for months, maybe the season.

So tell Joe again how valuable these wretched, worthless preseason games are.

Completely agree Joe. I also think it is on the coaches. Do not play starters in the preseason with the possible only exception being a rookie that needs to get his feet wet.

That’s fair. Let the backups get snaps.

  3. TB_MikeB Says:

JMac, Bucky, Luke, maybe even Evans – we’ve been led to believe that several guys are going to be back to playing only to find out later that they’re far more hurt that we realized. This is so frustrating. Feels like a special season getting derailed

  4. Smarter than Joe Says:

Smart coaches prepare for this, Todd Blows does not

Bucs know what McMillan was about, they also knew Evans can’t play a full season and they over paid a injured Godwin

Team’s have to be pro active and prepare accordingly

The Bucs leadership is not pro active in protecting their players or roster

  5. Ken Says:

I would get rid of the preseason entirely. Change it to a 18 game season except that the first 2 games are interconference only so that they have less weight on the eventual seedings.

  6. 813BUCBOI Says:

    has to be sarcasm lol

who was our first round pick?

    5-1!!!

    GO BUCS!!!

  7. 813BUCBOI Says:

    ocala

    i agree…

just let the 3rd string and camp meat play…

    i wouldnt play the 1s and 2s

    5-1!!!

    GO BUCS!!!

  8. SlyPirate Says:

Dr. ChatGPT says a serious neck strain can take 1-3 months to heal. 3 months would be December and the final push of the year.

    Fingers crossed.

The good news for JMac is Licht gives injured WR three year deals worth $66M with $44M guaranteed.

Who would want to use that money on a proven pass rusher?

  9. Rod Munch Says:

Instead of blaming the preseason game, that players always used to play without the huge rash of injuries we see now, how about putting the blame where it belongs, on Teddy ‘Hospital Ball’ Bridgewater.

  10. GoneGator Says:

Bummer. J-Mac is the real deal

Friggin WR depth – thank God JL and Todd built the depth there that they did

Going to need Grizz and Tez to step up. Cade, Shep, Miller too

  11. Joe Says:

we see now, how about putting the blame where it belongs, on Teddy ‘Hospital Ball’ Bridgewater.

How do you know McMillan ran the correct route?

Bridgewater could have thrown that pass to Altoona and McMillan would be on the field for the Bucs right now if he wasn’t undercut by a piece of camp meat.

What’s your hangup with Bridgewater? He took Kyle Trask’s spot?

  12. Fred McNeil Says:

@gonegator, those guys are all doing pretty good as it is.
I think they said JMac would be out 8 weeks when it happened

  13. Hawk Says:

If not for preseason games, there’d be a LOT of UFAs and low draft picks who would never have gotten the chance to show that they can be an asset to an NFL team. Instead of throwing out the whole process, why not tweak it. No starters allowed except EITHER the first or the last game of the preseason. And then only one/two quarters maximum.

  14. MelvinJunior Says:

He never should’ve been on the field on that night, and on that game. Period. They don’t need “preseason” games. Most High Schools might have ONE. NONE in college. They are entirely, unnecessary. Worthless. ONLY used by the NFL as an extra way to generate MORE $$$$. Period.

  15. #99 the Big Fella Says:

lol Joe, I like your response!

  16. Buc1987 Says:

Joe the injury could have happened in the preseason or regular season.

    Injuries happen in football.

  17. El hefe Says:

I still say this is teddy b’s fault for putting the receiver in that position

  18. Eric Says:

We’re not going to say anything about the insanely inaccurate high pass that got him injured, gotcha OK!

  19. MelvinJunior Says:

@Hawk – they have plenty of practices and inter squad scrimmages, tape, and etc. on these guys. I mean, how many times have you seen a guy get into one or two preseason games and come up with one or two interceptions, sacks, TD’s, and etc. And, then the fans are freaking-out, all excited and everything… Them, he’s CUT anyway!? Completely, meaningless. It’s not needed. They already know who can play, and 90%+ on who’s going to make the team even before the first preseason game is ever played. It’s not really a big deal.

  20. Ugo Says:

Smarter than Joe, you mean being proactive and drafting a first round WR (Bowles was a driving force to draft EE)? Or do you mean going into the season with a large array of backup wr like Shep and Miller and Johnson? As I recall, we are 4-1 and our offense has been steadily improving all season

You sir or ma’am, are a buffoon of the highest order. Kindly show yourself out until you have studied the game of football a great deal more than you have as of yet

  21. Rod Munch Says:

Joe – High, over the middle, has always been called a hospital ball. It’s not like I was the only one calling it out as a terrible pass.

And my issue was Baker was supposed to start the game, which Bowles then axed, ruining what was going to be the only interesting quarter of the preseason. Then at least we get to see Trask play with starters for the first time, so that’s an interesting storyline. Instead, Bowles is worried that Trask might look good, and clearly they were going to cut him regardless of what he did, so Bowles rushes Bridgewater onto the the field, and he promptly puts McMillan on IR. I don’t care about Trask other than it would have been interesting to see what he could do after years of never being with the starters, while seeing Bridgewater wasn’t interesting in the least. It was just unnecessary, and a QB that better knows the offense and his teammates, I don’t think is getting teammates sent home in a neck brace.

  22. Leopold Stotch Says:

I just hope/pray he’s okay. Young man was looking so promising. I feel horrible for him. Also those things are SO uncomfortable.

  23. Bucs 95 Says:

I know this may sound crazy but maybe we should go after odell beckam jr ? Yeah hes suspended for 6 games but we could use him down the stretch

  24. Saskbucs Says:

Can someone get an update on Luke after what Schefter was saying?

Goedeke, Evans, Bucky… those are the 3 important ones right now. See ya in week 14 Godwin and JMac, need you healthy for later. Need those other 3 back yesterday.

  25. BD Says:

Maybe just play first string against first string in pre season that way we don’t have wanta bes against starters that want to make an impression to make the team. Let them play against the other wanna bes

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

BS on “ worthless preseason…..ask Kancey , Goedeke, Keiff , Mauch , Walker…. How they got injured….not preseason

  27. Mobucs Says:

From my second-hand anecdotal experience, the Steelers like to hurt people. It’s a culture thing. If players who took cheap shots were cut instead of promoted, things would be different. And the League is selling violence. It should be controlled violence, but out-of-control actors are tolerated and even celebrated. Injuries may be inevitable; they should not be intentional.

  28. David Says:

So what do all the third and fourth string guys trying to make teams do without preseason games? I’m sick of this notion that it’s all worthless.
Why do you think the Buccaneers have so many injuries?
Why do you think there are a ton of injuries across the NFL and the lack of basic fundamentals that prevent holding as a lineman or defensive back? Or the horrendous tackling which leads to many injuries??????????????

They barely practice half the year. When they do practice, they don’t wear pads. When they do wear pads they hardly hit as much as they should. They’ve gone from five preseason games to three and the starters play a total of a quarter, maybe a half. Then everyone wonders why there are so many injuries and such horrific play for the first four or five weeks

  29. Joe Says:

Joe – High, over the middle, has always been called a hospital ball. It’s not like I was the only one calling it out as a terrible pass.

Once again, how do you know McMillan ran the correct route? For all we know Bridgewater threw a perfect pass and McMillan ran the wrong route. We don’t know.

And again, Bridgewater never flipped over McMillan. That was camp meat Daryl Porter who flipped over McMillan to make a splash play.

If a dude in a Chevy truck runs a red light and T-bones you, do you blame Chevy for making the truck or the driver for blowing through the red light?

  30. Joe Says:

Hey guys, the Bucs won their second Super Bowl without snapping on a chin strap for one play in one worthless preseason game.

It can be done. College proves it every year.

  31. Winny Testaverde Says:

At the risk of being called out for my lack of medical credentials, I must say that the fact he’s still in a neck brace is an awful sign for McMillan. I’d be shocked if he made it back on the field in “live action” in 2025.

He was ascending last season, his brother was a Top 10 pick this year and the Bucs took a receiver ( Thank God now ) in the first round. He was obviously going all out to earn his snaps. It’s a shame.

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Joe Says: Once again, how do you know McMillan ran the correct route? For all we know Bridgewater threw a perfect pass and McMillan ran the wrong route. We don’t know.

    ————

I’m not bring a prick by asking this, I don’t know the answer and I don’t know the protocol, but did anyone in the media ask Bridgewater what happened on the throw?

Bridgewater also overthrew his first two passes of the game to Shepard and then Otton, which is another reason why it’s assumed he overthrew that one as well.

  33. SB Says:

We’re gonna beat the Niners w/o Mike, Chris, OR J Mac!!!!!!!
    Imagine freaking that!

  34. ballwasher61 Says:

I ask why a player would intentionally do that to another player but then again I have to realize few of these guys care about anyone else but their own arse. THAT was a vulnerable receiver not one crossing the middle and gets flattened.

  35. Tucker Says:

Injuries are part of football get over it already they are unpredictable happen all the time what’s the difference if it happens then or first game of the season. Go bucs.

    Rod Munch Says:

    ^^^^^^^^

    Joe/Rod:
    Are you kidding?
If you don’t know that’s a hospital ball, you missed the 100,000 times TB12 spoke ad nauseam* about never making those throws because they are so ridiculously dangerous.

    Reality Check
Everyone makes mistakes. Teddy was back in the NFL for 10 days. Todd put him in too early, Grizz shouldn’t have called that play, Teddy threw a bad pass, Jmac never should have tried for it, and that d**k never should have cut his legs. Everyone messed up and I’m sure they all wish they had a 1.5 second mulligan.

*Latin for “too much.” Just helping out the SEC, ACC folks. J/K. They are thinking about naming the NCAA National Championship. It’s may become “The Big 10 2nd Championship”. 2023 – MI, 2024 – OSU, 2025 – Ducks, 2026 – Ducks. Seems appropriate.

  37. PSL Bob Says:

Ken, they’re definitely going to an 18 game season. Maybe as soon as next year. I like your idea of having the first couple of games interconference. They still would count, but would be less important in seeding for the playoffs.

  38. MadMax Says:

Let him heal….big Mike too, we’re good.

  39. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

I concur with eliminating the preseason games. While they have some benefit, the benefit is outweighed by the risk IMO. More practices against other teams can get a team ready to play.

While there IS some benefit to the games for the 3rd & 4th string layers trying to make the team, watching them play against opposing 3rd & 4th string guys on the opposing team isn’t an ideal way to evaluate them. Some of the guys they’re playing against will be working at Home Depot or Publix the following month.

  40. Power Of Pewter Says:

Given that Godwin was going to be out a while, meaning McMillan was a vital cog, why tf did Bowles leave him in the game against camp fodder?

  41. Jmarkbuc Says:

Sure seems like there were a hell of a lot less injuries when we actually had training camp and preseason games.

And that was when there was real hitting all camp long.

  42. Bucsfan Says:

Considering the current CBA does not end until 2030 there is little chance the League will end preseason BS games until then, unless of course this Summer players organize a walkout strike based on elimination of preseason games, that I would love to see.

  43. Aqualung Says:

His Geniusness, Magoo, Bucs Medical and Training. The Quaternary system that makes it as challenging as absolutely possible to function normally.

  44. MelvinJunior Says:

@ David – same exact thing they do in High School. And, College. Y’all wanna act as if they don’t have any “practices,” inter squad “scrimmages,” or THOUSANDS of minutes of tape, and etc. on all of these guys dating back to High School, PeeWee, College, and from prior seasons from other NFL teams, & etc. They already know who can play, and already have over 90%+ of the roster set in their minds, anyway! They don’t need any “preseason” games under the lights, in order to know ANYTHING. In order to do WHAT… See a guy come in off the street and ‘pick-off’ a pass for a TD, recover a fumble, get a SACK, and a couple of TFL during a couple of ‘meaningless’ preseason games JUST to ‘cut him’ anyway!? Come-On.

  45. MelvinJunior Says:

@ BucsFanSince1996 – “Some of the guys they’re playing against will be working at Home Depot or Publix the following month.”

Exactly. I meant to add te same.

  46. buc4evr Says:

Either eliminate the preseason or expand the roster and practice squad. With this team , I would never let players in first and second slots play in preseason. Preseason should be all about the practice squad players.

Would love to actually see a game where the majority of starters play. This yearly injury situation is getting ridiculous.

  47. Aqualung Says:

    Drinking heavily makes it better

  48. jimmy Says:

it sucks he got hurt that way and hopefully he makes it back to play, it could have been much worse. i think the preseason only makes a difference for those who need a shot to make the team. zero upside to playing starters for the team.

do they really need 3 games to figure out who of the bubble players they are going to keep? probably not. one maybe or two, one home and one away. thats enough for everyone to practice everything once including the equipment mules and beer slingers.

  49. Oxycondomns Says:

im glad bucs got rid of trask but a starter probably shouldn’t have played with a rusty qb who he hasnt developed any chemistry with yet

  50. toopanca Says:

It is atrocious that NFL players are still exposed to severe neck injuries.

The NFL could eliminate most severe neck injuries just by adding 3 pairs of stops to the shoulder pads and adding a stop engagement ring to the base of approved helmets.

The flat pair of stops in front would transfer force from the helmet to the shoulder pads when the neck approaches the limits of safe forward flexión.

The flat pair of stops in the back would transfer force from the helmet to the shoulder pads when the neck approaches the limits of safe rearward extension.

The wider of pair of stops with rounded tops one the sides would transfer the weight of the helmet and all additional force along the line of the neck from the helmet to the shoulder pads while still allowing the player to turn the player’s head to look up and down and from side to side.

  51. View from 132 Says:

It was a bad fall. If you jump into the air while other men hit you, this will happen. All of you need to chill out. It isn’t because of preseason, Bowles or anything else. It happens in football. Usually a guy falls and does not land on his neck and we don’t even mention it again.

  52. Sapp 2 Fundamentally Sound Says:

    FYI
Jalen McMillan is in no way related to Tetairoa McMillan.
Jalen was born in California & Tetairoa was born in Hawaii. They just happen to share the same last name.
One is a nice #3 type receiver with decent height & good hands but lacks play strength.
The other rivals Mike Evans with pterodactyl like wingspan excellent size & was was the 8th overall pick in NFL draft by the panthers cubs .

  53. Hydra Says:

I don’t think he’s smarter than “Florida man”, let alone Joe.

  54. Jim Hennessey Says:

Why was he even on the field against them with a third string QB in the game???

  55. MikeBuc Says:

    Munch writes

“Then at least we get to see Trask play with starters for the first time, so that’s an interesting storyline. Instead, Bowles is worried that Trask might look good, and clearly they were going to cut him regardless of what he did, ”

So Yes Joe. Its all about Trask. If baker has a bad game or two they will come back out of the cellar pretty quick too.

  56. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

It’s not Todd balls winning this game it’s Griz and as far as injuries every year we deal with injuries but we should be more focused on why our defense is so terrible with protecting against the pass. As long as we have the head coach we’re never going to win a Super Bowl and of course the media never calls him out.

  57. Sheen Says:

Have you morons not watched this team under Bowles the last few years? The defense starts slow and finishes strong, in season and often in games. The guy excels at picking offensive coaches, the players love him, the staff loves him, he was instrumental in getting Baker here…wtf more do you want? Ya’ll act like we’re 1-4 and not 4-1. This has got to be the sh!!test fan base.

  58. Woodman Says:

Yea lronlung you don’t tell us your a alcoholic we already new.

  59. ATRAIN Says:

  60. Greg-therealone Says:

First of all, speaking for myself I could give a crap about Kyle Trask. Hes a backup. Whatever. But Teddy Bridgewater? I get it…Baker runs out of the pocket like a maniac and you need some experience. Great. Teddy Bridgewater is your choice? OK. Stupid. But OK. But the dude has been out of the league for 2 years and after practicing for a couple of weeks you decide to put him in with the starters “to see what he can do” and he blows up one of our starting receivers with a poorly thrown ball? Theres no getting around that. Sometimes this team does stuff that defies logic and thats one of the things that drives me crazy.

    There were better choices. Whatever.

  61. Oxycondomns Says:

baker picked coen not bowles. same with griz

  62. Buc1987 Says:

Sheen…we’re also fan base that knows defense.

Todd is supposed to be a defensive minded coach.

The defense sucks and has sucked for awhile now.

  63. orlbucfan Says:

American football is a wargame, pure and simple. It’s violent and unfortunately, money talks and dirty crap goes down. I hope this young player recovers. We’re 4-1 without his services. FWIW, I am focused on Sunday and 5-1. Go Bucs!!

  64. George R Says:

Jmac has a strain neck. That is BS. JMac has a broken neck. He had a fracture vertebrae in his neck

  65. David Says:

Rodmunch is correct. Teddy sails them high all the time and a lot of his passes Did that during that game.

It was not Coach’s fault for having Jalen in there. Jalen needs the reps, it took him half a year to figure out the playbook and get going. He was potentially going to play a lot of slot until Godwin came back.

As for preseason games… They only have three now (used to 4-5) and the starting offense played a total of about 1/2. Preseason games aren’t the problem. They barely practice, when they do they don’t wear pads, if they do wear pads, they don’t hit very long or very often.
Cut to the regular season, constant holding on the line and defensive backs, bad tackling… It all helps lead to injuries Preseason is not the problem, the lack of preseason and training camp and hitting is the issue.

Just like the ridiculous pitch counts in baseball. They now have data for two decades and it has proven pitch counts have not helped protect the pitchers from getting injured. If anything, you can look at the stats and argue it’s caused more injuries.

  66. Geno711 Says:

Not sure why Rod keeps calling Teddy Bridgewater Hospital Ball except that he thinks he is being funny.

I have asked him for a past time that he knows that Teddy Bridgewater got someone injured. Joe has asked him to verify whether he knows whether McMillan ran the correct route.

Again, for a guy that thinks that he knows football — he keeps silent on these things.

  67. Mveal2006 Says:

I do t see him ever playing again, Iraq if so, it will be diminished

  68. Brett Buell Says:

It’s football. There is an argument that we have so many injuries because these guys can’t practice and hit before the season.

  69. Stanglassman Says:

He’s coming back in December. Exactly how it’s been reported since we diagnosed the injury. Nothing new here. Bowles was just asked about him and said he getting better but still in the brace.

    ____________________________________

Seriously?? The guy who was coaching HS ball and hadn’t played in a while, knows the routes better than the receiver that was running them last year and all off-season? You can’t be freaking serious. Teddy through a crappy pass, high over the middle and got McMillan hurt. I was cussing the dude out when it happened, especially since Bowles decided to start him over Trask so that he could find an excuse to dump him and be done with the “controversy” from the prior years. Ironically, Baker’s been pretty lights out for most of the season so far, and has earned the starting spot without question. But now we have an older fart, who’s already hurt, as our back-up and we blew our 2nd round pick by dumping a guy that could come in and potentially carry us if Baker gets hurt.

  73. BUCDADDY Says:

Yep, I agree with another person who posted on here. Thank you, Teddy Sh*twater. You hung a receiver out to dry, who still has a bright future ahead, when your career has been over for years now. What a dumb move to bring in Teddy. Thank God for Baker. If he gets hurt, we’re screwed! Not a huge fan of Trask, but who in the hell thought it was a good idea to bring in Bridgewater?

  74. David Says:

    GENO711

It’s pretty common knowledge that Teddy Bridgewater sails passes high. He’s been doing it for a decade. Hell, he did it a few times in that game before that pass to McMillan. Everyone just wants to remember the two touchdown passes, but prior to that he sailed a few high over the middle.

Whatever, I get it. Players get injured, it’s football. But without practicing and tackling and blocking while in pads as much as they used to, it really seems they’re getting hurt more often. The CBA is actually made injuries worse for players.

  75. MelvinJunior Says:

It didn’t take him “half the season” to learn the playbook, David. HE WAS INJURED. Hell, he got hurt early like in his 2nd game of the season, and then missed 4 games total. Then, he returned a little too soon. He was NOT fully-healthy, right when he came back. He was BANGED-UP. It took him a few games to get back to being himself again, and back into game shape, while learning to trust that hamstring. After that, HE TOOK-OFF!!!! Didn’t look like he struggled at ALL, once he got his confidence back. He tore it UP all during training camp and preseason. So, it obviously, had very little to do with not knowing the fricken playbook. Per TB-Times… He Had A “DAZZLING” 2024 Preseason and Training Camp. Lead The NFL in TD-catches, over his final 5-games of the season.

  76. MelvinJunior Says:

Tony Adame says he’s “Damaged Goods.”

  77. MelvinJunior Says:

Sheen Says: “Have you morons not watched this team under Bowles the last few years? The defense starts slow and finishes strong.”

It’s had a lot more to do with the ‘quality’ of opponent than anything else, during the ‘second-half’ of our schedules, over the past couple of seasons.

  78. Jeff Says:

He’s lucky he’s not paralyzed. His career is over. Impossible to come back from a spinal injury like this without risking everything.

  79. Captain Redslegs Says:

I dont understand why they dont “require” first string against first string in the 1st quarter of final 2 games of preseason and make 2nd string play 2nd string witj the 2nd half for players trying to earn a spot…OR not even let players guaranteed to make the roster play in preseason games…

It’s pretty common knowledge that Teddy Bridgewater sails passes high. He’s been doing it for a decade.

That is just Bull cr*p from a guy that cannot name one time in the past that he did that to a receiver.

It is not common knowledge, and it is not expert knowledge, or the experts would be saying it too.

It just became local gossip on Joe Bucs fan after the pass to McMillan in preseason.

Common – science — common logic says that when you make a hypothesis you have to prove it with some backing.

I am asking you — “David” — to give a source — even one article.

  81. MikeBuc Says:

Well you can’t fault the traskies for not covering for each other. They do that very well. The argument is pretty silly given what preseason is. You going to guaranteed a backup or third string QB is never going to float one too high? or what cut him?

Probably should be a rule – if you are potential starter or not a rookie trying to secure a spot on the team – don’t try and make a play in preseason that can end your season or life.

  82. Just Visiting Says:

If you have a new, rusty backup quarterback, you’re going to play him in this situation…every time. If Bowels had played Trask, knowing he was about to be cut, every single person on this thread would have called him an idiot, and rightfully so.

Well you can’t fault the traskies for not covering for each other. They do that very well. The argument is pretty silly given what preseason is. You going to guaranteed a backup or third string QB is never going to float one too high? or what cut him?

This is pretty dumb. You don’t send a guy who hasn’t played in over a year, who’s in his 30’s still learning the playbook, out to play with some of you premier players where he might do something stupid like that.

Trask was well known for throwing receiver friendly passes. This was all Bowles. He loves Baker to death (was clearly infatuated with him coming out of college but couldn’t draft him with the Jets as the Browns got him) and didn’t want anyone backing him up that still had people thinking he made the wrong QB choice, especially since Trask was an Arians pick (whom I trust far more in evaluating QB’s). As I said, I don’t even have any real complaints about Baker’s play so far this year, so I wouldn’t be calling for Trask right now anyways, and I think there are plenty that think like me. I just want the team to win consistently.

i mean it ultimately is meaningless, and the nfl wants new markets, just turn the preseason to flag football that they keep trying to market already to people. make it a big fan fest and 3 competitions of skill (7on7) strength, ( linemen strength challenges) and special teams (accuracy /distance kicking) keeps injuries down, lets you still line up and run against different people, and lets the young and people who cant afford to see their heroes in the regular season still get a chance to show up and connect and actually see them do something besides sit on a bench.
