Jalen McMillan Broke Neck Bones

October 30th, 2025

Jalen McMillan wearing a neck brace under his hoodie.

Sobering news today on the Ira Kaufman Podcast with special guest Todd Bowles.

Bucs second-year receiver Jalen McMillan landed on his head after jumping for a catch in a Week 2 preseason game in Pittsburgh and messed up his neck. The Bucs said it was a severely strained neck.

It was worse than that. Bowles said on the podcast that McMillan broke bones in his neck.

“It’s just a matter of the bones healing the right way,” Bowles said of McMillan’s slow recovery. “And those are such difficult bones to judge inside the neck, and I’m not in the medical profession, but he’s coming along. I think he’s in good spirits. And I think he’s getting a lot better, I just don’t know how close.”

The head coach explained McMillan is recovering for life as well as football.

“He’s still in a brace but he’s getting better,” Bowles said. “He’s getting better. But necks are not like ankles or arms, where you see progress — where you can lift on them and work them out while you’re still in a brace. And you can say, ‘Oh, he looks good today. He’s getting stronger. He’s getting faster.’ It’s a neck injury. And those, like you said, it’s a life thing if it doesn’t heal the right way. So [team doctors] are saying it’s healing the right way. They’re saying he’s coming along. He’s feeling better. He’s all similes. I don’t know what that means, honestly. Because again, until he puts on a helmet and starts working out and everything else, you just don’t know.”

This definitely was a deflating report from Bowles as it relates to McMillan playing this season, but great news as it relates to his overall recovery.

In May of 2019, then-Bucs edge rusher Jason Pierre-Paul broke his neck during an early-May car accident (Ferrari) in South Florida. He was back on the field in late October and had 8 1/2 sacks in 10 games.

That recovery timeline was considered exceptional, so Joe is going to consider McMillan done for the 2025 season.

i hope he gets well soon and has a full recovery.

  2. Jmarkbuc Says:

Sit him down for the season. Not worth the risk to JMacs life or career.

  3. 813BUCBOI Says:

sadly, i agree with you joe….JMac is done for this year…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  4. TB_MikeB Says:

All this over a preseason hospital ball: thanks, Teddy

  5. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

I thought early December was the projected return date? You never read or heard that here. –Joe

  6. BA’s Red Pen Says:

I hope he has a speedy and healthy recovery.

  7. Bucs4Ever Says:

The next time someone throws a ball like that in preseason, let it drop. This is terrible news for him, as a person and a player. I feel sick

  8. Upstate NY BUC Says:

I knew we should have snagged Tyler Lockett!! unfortunately, this sounds kind of grim news!! Life is more important!! Buc’s should not even let him return till next season…. Good Luck JMac, Go Bucs

  9. ERIC Says:

not deflating at all. I really wasn’t expecting him back this year.

  10. DS Says:

Rest up young man prep for life

  11. Dewey Selmon Says:

Where does it say he broke bones? You can injure bones with out breaking them?

  12. DS Says:

Hope he gets a nice settlement if he retires

  13. BuccinBaker6, Says:

Honestly we don’t know how bad his neck is broken an the Bucs usually seem over cautions on injuries esp with a neck injury but he might be back this year he might not as long as he is healing an comes back healthy that’s great for JMac

  14. Obvious One Says:

    Yeah.
Poor guy. That Really Sucks. It’ll never be the same for him but it doesn’t mean he won’t recover. In fact if he has Very Very Good doctors then he could get anywhere in the 90 to 95% mobility back. Right now it hurts to slightly turn his head.

I’ve got a solid feeling that if he manages to make it back this year at all, it’ll be at the very end of it. He HAS TO BE Careful for now! I doubt he’ll be back this year overall.

Remember that Licht is Hyper Aware of his situation and it’s surprising that he (Licht) doesn’t pick a couple of new guys up to remain competitive. We’re down just TOO MANY that aren’t coming back this year to win the Lombardi. We DO NEED a couple of new guys to be legitimately Strong Enough. Especially in the O line and wide receiver departments because it’s now our Offense that’s turned into a real problem instead of a strength… STUNNING!

Hard to believe but it’s the hard truth.

  15. Aqualung Says:

Congrats, Todd. Way to play him in the preseason with your brand new backup QB while you had 12 other dudes you could’ve been playing instead.

    Way to go.

    Yay!!!!!!!!!

  16. Buc You Says:

    Thanks Teddy!

  17. unbelievable Says:

Def done for the season, if not his whole career

  18. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Grab Meyers today ,,, no JMac ,,, no Mike for a while and who knows about Chris

  19. Dom Says:

He’s lucky he wasn’t paralyzed. Hope the recovery continues to go well. We shouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t play this season

  20. MelvinJunior Says:

Yeah, not surprising at all. I said when it happened that he’s probably done for the year. That particular injury, is so tricky and serious. But, it’s just such a shame tho. What a STUPID decision to even have HIM out there in the first place, in that game. There was ZERO reason for it, other than to make Teddy look as good as possible. How Dumb. He was going to have a HUGE season. Baker said he was just KILLING-IT in practice! I knew the drafting of EE would really motivate him even more, and raise his level of play to the next level. Now, THIS… There’s a good chance that he will never be the same player again! HORRIBLE. We were SO LUCKY to get him in the first place. Think about what all had to happen… First, we made the Carlton Davis trade with Detroit and picked-up that extra 3rd-Round Pick. Then, due to playing injured during his last season at Washington, he fell to where he did in the draft. He would’ve been a late 1st-Round to early 2nd-Round Pick, even in THAT LOADED friggin’ WR-class!!!! I always, liked him BETTER than Odunze (taken 9th-overall)… He was the better receiver (and had better numbers too, when healthy), but Odunze had the better size and ‘looked’ more like a NFL WR. But, it wasn’t even CLOSE between him and Polk (taken 37th-overall, at the top of the 2nd-Round). Hell, we were SET for the future at WR having EE and JMac together, as our nucleus, and having been mentored by Mike Evans & Chris Godwin. I hope he can come back ASAP and return to the player he once was… Cause, we REALLY need him bad. WHY the hell did he go up for that pass to begin with, in THAT game!? It’s just the player he was… FEARLESS. Teddy just floats that ball like that, right over the middle, with an Uber-Driver trying to cover him… Come-On, MAN.

  21. Scott Says:

Thanks hospital ball Teddy! Just playing around but I do know Teddy had to try to win that job by winning/looking good that game. If I remember correctly his passes were dropped a few times before that throw.

  22. adam from ny Says:

i said jmac was done for the year…this was pretty obvious from that moment moving forward…

you do not mess with the neck bone…

the neck bone’s connected to the spine bone…the spine bone connected to the hip bone…the hip bones connected to the peen bone………..etc

  23. adam from ny Says:

but you’d think they’d stay quiet on it for another week or so while trying to grab a receiver somewhere…

but now the league knows we are desperados looking for a water mirage in texas drylands

  24. adam from ny Says:

it’s really not question of will he play this year…it was more like a question of will he ever play again

  25. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Shut him down for the year if it’s even questionable. He’s young and has a long life ahead of him. He and EE will be a great tandem for us for years to come.

  26. heyjude Says:

The hair stood up on my arms when I heard that. It could have been so much worse too. Give him time to think about his future and what he wants to do. He could do so many other things in football and not have to worry about his neck and other injuries. Nothing to play around with.

  27. D-Rok Says:

I had a sneaking suspicion it was more than a simple neck strain.
I hope he’s patient and cautious in his comeback if he can even play again.
I’ve personally had neck injuries and neck surgeries and they are no joke.

  28. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Joe the guys blaming Teddy should be barred for a month ,,, it’s a freak play and a play JMac is extremely good at ,,, watch Baker in the undercover show overthrow JMac and JMac doing the same (really awesome ) jump catch

  29. Durango 95 Says:

    Woah. That is sobering.

Truly wish him the very best.

He sold-out to catch a throw that had no consequences at all.

Says a lot about the character of the man.

    Easily preventable.

This happened when Bowles was trying to showcase Bridgewater.

  30. ocala Says:

Per Dr John Shim who is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in spinal surgery here in Tampa. This would be the typical diagnosis(assuming this is his injury which it looks to be):
Stable fracture requiring monitoring (e.g., healed unilateral laminar or pars fracture)Collar for 6-12 weeks, then rehab3-6 monthsIncludes progressive strengthening and sport-specific drills; full clearance after radiological healing.

So it sounds like Jalean is going to be out for this year but should be good for the 2026 season.

  31. Winny Testaverde Says:

The initial smokescreen of 8 weeks was to simply buy time. It’s such a shame given how he came on last year. It’s hazardous to be a Bucs receiver this year.

  32. 813BUCBOI Says:

not surprised folks blaming Bowles lol….

if you didnt know, bowles is also to blame for Hurricane Melissa lol

    6-2!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  33. Leopold Stotch Says:

See I thought it was weird he was in a brace for that long with a “strain” I had a 500lb piece of equipment slowly fall on my. Like it gently bent me sideways (like oblique crunch). I felt fine, but ended up with a stained neck and concussion. I was only in the brace until the xrays came back that I didn’t have a fracture. So like an hour and a half or so. Very unfortunate for him, I’m sorry that it happened and hopefully he’ll come back stronger. Prayers for the young man.

  34. Aqualung Says:

Whose decision was it to play him, a starter, when starters weren’t playing? Stick to your cupcakes and Barbie’s, idiot.

  35. Rod Munch Says:

And as a reward for that throw, Teddy won the backup job. Makes sense.

  36. Bucs Reality Check Says:

    Fluke play, no one’s fault.

Sit him for the rest of the year to be safe. His long life ahead is more important to be extra careful.

    Get well soon, J-Mac!

  37. Billy Bucco Says:

Aqua with the typical I have gas and it’s Bowels fault lol

  38. ballwasher61 Says:

First off for all the people complaining about him being out there and blaming the coach’s and JL get a grip, he should have been playing, it’s football and he and everyone else needs the reps. Now where I DO have an issue it’s about that A-hole D back that hit him that high AND about these guys leaving their feet for SOME of these routine catch’s. Not saying his was routine and he does what he needs to to complete the pass, that’s instinctive on JMACs part, but THAT is truly a defenseless receiver if there ever was one. I understand it’s a bang-bang play at times but I see guys pull up so as not to injure anyone or get injured when a play is about over, the game isn’t that fast.

  39. Winny Testaverde Says:

The Bridgewater signing was curious at best. Sore teeth, large powdered wig and fully admitted he rather still be coaching high school right now. There must not have been a lick of confidence in Trask. He remains unsigned but potentially has a tryout with the Tampa Bay Storm in the near future.

  40. Coconut Doughnut Says:

This would have never happened if we kept “Future Ring of Honor” member Kyle Trask.

  41. ElioT Says:

Thanks again Teddy Doo-Doo Dreds Suicide Ball Bridgewater. Freaking loser.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

    Bucs Reality Check Says:

    Fluke play, no one’s fault.

    ———–

Throwing hospital balls is absolutely the QB’s fault. You never throw high across the middle, there’s a reason that good QB’s will literally lead the receivers away from taking those hits. Teddy shouldn’t have been in that game, it was Bowles worried that Trask might actually look good finally playing with starters, and clearly Bowles was going to cut him, and instead wanted to showcase Teddy and we lost starter because of it.

    Terrible job overall on this.

Also inexcusable that the team didn’t come out and say he’s likely done for the year. What exactly is the competitive advantage that comes from keeping that information private? There is none, other than to try to take the heat off Bowles and Bridgewater.

I’m not a Bowles basher overall, but some stuff he does makes no sense.

  43. MelvinJunior Says:

Scott says: “I do know Teddy had to try to win that job by winning/looking good that game.”

Na, it was already set in stone way before that game even kicked-off. It was a DONE DEAL. They only wanted to help him look the very best he possibly could, so to help sell to the fans. That’s all it ever was.

  44. 813BUCBOI Says:

    c’mon squid face!!!!

not only is your mouth full of feathers but your brain is too!!!!!!

    starter were playing clueless clown!!!!!!
    ***********************************************************
BUCCANEERS STARTERS WILL PLAY NEXT SATURDAY IN PITTSBURG:

Next Saturday is when all or most Buccaneers starters will play as a unit against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

That was strongly implied during tonight’s WFLA-TV broadcast of the Titans-Bucs game, and JoeBucsFan.com was able to confirm after the game that Todd Bowles’ plan is to play the starters in Week 2 of the preseason — and not much if at all in preseason finale (Week 3) versus Buffalo in Tampa.

The Bucs face the Bills during the regular season and Bowles, like many head coaches, would prefer not to have his starters up against a future 2025 opponent in August.
    ************************************************************

    starter were playing clown!!!!!

now go back to the dinner table!!!!!….your crow is getting cold!!!!!

    6-2!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  45. MelvinJunior Says:

@ Rod Much – yeah, and haha… Teddy had not EVEN PLAYED in a ‘live’ football game in probably TWO YEARS, either! So, had ZERO ‘instincts’ or feel for the game, whatsoever. Just a HORRIBLE decision. JMac was as good as ANYBODY, goin up high and attacking those balls like that! It’s in his blood. It’s just who HE is. You’ve gotta protect guys from themselves, sometimes. Period.

  46. buc4evr Says:

Bucs need to pick up another vet receiver. JMac is out for the year, Evans is out for the year, and even if Godwin comes back he will not be 100% or he re-injure his leg or ankle. I wouldn’t count on any of those guys this year.

  47. orlbucfan Says:

813: “if you didnt know, bowles is also to blame for Hurricane Melissa lol” THAT is a classic!!! I almost spit out my lunch. Seriously though, neck fractures are nothing to sneeze at. JMac is very lucky, he’s walking. Let him heal. You notice he’s doing a lot of hanging around One Buc. JMac, get yourself back to 100%! You caught a lucky break as football is a rough sport. We’ll see you next season. Get well!!!!!

  48. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Dang. That’s terrible for Jmac. And another black spot on preseason football. Sounds like he’s gonna have some tedious rehab, but I’m hopeful he’ll get his chance on the field again.

  49. MelvinJunior Says:

JMac absolutely did NOT need any “reps” in a preseason game. Period. I mean, what in the hell do you think they do every single DAY in practice, and throughout their entire lives!? They already KNEW ‘who’ JMac was. So, there was zero need to evaluate ANYTHING. And, you put him in there against a bunch of Uber-drivers, and a ‘rusty’ QB. It’s ridiculous. Completely, pointless. And, look at what happened. You play stupid games you win stupid prizes. Period.

  50. Aqualung Says:

Bridgewater was the starting QB? Got it.

  51. Tampabaybucfan Says:

My question is why did it take this long to get the true facts of the injury?

  52. Ben Says:

After hearing this news, the Bucs shouldn’t rush him (not that they would). I think Meyers is a must at this point. Godwin and Evans cant stay healthy. Sad news overall thinking this year the WRs woule be unstoppable. Not to rehash old frustrating topics but I think this is a perfect example of mismanagement of personell. No way Mcmillan should have been playing in all preseason games before injury. There were soo many other players that deserved looks than a surefire roster lock like Mcmillan. Just irritating.

  53. BigZ Says:

Hes done this year at a minimum. JL better get some help. Too think two rooks and a practice squad guy will get us to the promise land is a farce. Dont waste this opportunity. Jakobi Myers, please.

  54. Bucamania Says:

WTH how does he go from severely strained neck out 8 weeks to broken neck?

  55. #1bucsfan Says:

Idk what bones he broke but I broke my C-4 vertebrae. Let it heal naturally cause it would be stronger than surgically repair option but the natural part took longer but better in the end. I wore a neck brace for 6 months and couldn’t do physical activities for 1 year. Docs were very close to putting me in a halo. All in all that was 20 years ago and my neck is great. I hope the same for our guy. Godspeed bro

  56. Rob in Land O' Lakes Says:

I don’t know who’s fault the injury is, but NO ONE here knows whether JMac ran that route 2 yards too shallow. It could have been a sh!!ty route just as easily as it could have been a bad ball. This isn’t sandlot… “Go to the Cadillac, turn around and I’ll throw it you”. NO ONE HERE KNOWS! Move on, guys.

  57. 813BUCBOI Says:

    Orlbucfan

Jmac is very fortunate…i’d even say blessed…

Mike Williams former WR of Clemson and the Chargers had a similar neck injury…he missed an entire season at Clemson…

we all just hope JMac get well soon…its beyond football at this point

    6-2!!!

    GO BUCS!!!

  58. Costa Rica John Says:

His health is more important than the game. Let him fully recover then return.

  59. firethecannons Says:

Okay so I did not know he injured the vertebrae, none of us knew, now I acccept this and no longer am I hoping to see him this season–rather he take his time and heal completely. A year off from football at his young age will be ok. Just want him to heal completely and not have pain or immobility issues. We will see him 2026–can’t wait!

  60. 813BUCBOI Says:

OK squid face!!!!…3rd time is a charm!!!!

try reading the 1st sentence very slow…..

“Next Saturday is when all or most Buccaneers starters will play as a unit against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.”

Do you know what the word “most” means?…lol…

I’ll try to put it in a sentence for ya….

Aqua eats the MOST crow out of everyone on JBF!!!

    hope that helps!!!!!

    6-2!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  61. firethecannons Says:

It should never of happened and these young wideouts need to be told/reminded, no airborne catches in practice or preseason.

  62. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Munch I do agree with you once that if Trask was playing that injury wouldn’t have happened !!!
because he would have got sacked! Need Meters JL,,, go get him

  63. Lightningvinny1 Says:

    Meyers

  64. Pmike Says:

    My taxes are too high!

  65. SB~LV Says:

Screw football if you don’t feel 100 % pain free and have complete range of motion!
    🙏🙏🙏🙏

  66. DailyRich Says:

Honestly wasn’t really expecting McMillan back this season anyway.

  67. Stanglassman Says:

We just saw Baker throws dozen of those passes the last few days. Over and behind the WRs going over the middle. It’s so juvenile to blame Teddy for a high pass. Some people just need someone to blame. We see it daily in our politics and it’s unhealthy.

  68. MelvinJunior Says:

IF, Baker had been in there with the 1’s, then it would not have been an issue. IF, they wanted to just work on getting their timing down together, & etc. then no problem at all. That would be completely understandable. 💯. But, with TEDDY!? Na. Don’t think so. Absolutely, no reason for it other than to help with trying to ‘sell-it’ to the fans, by putting HIM in the best possible position to succeed. It’s all it was. JMac was NEVER anticipated to have to play any ‘meaningful’ football with Teddy for this season. Therefore, there was ZERO reason for him to be out there.

  69. MelvinJunior Says:

I don’t put most of the blame on Teddy, himself. Hell, he just walked-in the door literally, right off of the streets, like just a week or two before… After, not playing ANY ‘meaningful’ football, in a very looong time. He was just doing his job the best way he knew how. Trask was DONE the very second that Teddy arrived. The FO could NOT have him to go out there and stink-it up for everyone to see. If anyone was going to be out there with the 1’s, then it should’ve been Bake. But, they decided to keep him OUT for some reason!? Hmmmm… BUT JMac NEEDED the reps! Ummmm… Okay, GOTCHA. Lmao

  70. Daryl Green Says:

Todd Bowels it took him this long to let fans who love the Bucs & J Mc, that he has broken bones in neck. We wouldn’t be asking all the time. You see. This man is getting on my last nerve nerves. You better have them ready For Drake. Ohh forget about The God 🤙🏾✌🏾

  71. Carlitin1988 Says:

Damn thats horrible for him and for his football career going forward. I hope hes able to recover fully and fast but yeah hes done for this year.

  72. EEK Says:

    dirty play on D
dude took the defenseless guy’s legs out and didn’t bother to try to wrap up

  73. LongSeason Says:

Having had a neck injury, I believe this is career ending. That’s a possibility I thought of at the time of the injury. Then they said it was a sprained neck. That would be possible to recover from and play again. Broken necks? Unfortunately this is very severe and he won’t be back this year. Even if Jalen could come back, I would say for his health he should have the full off season to recover and then evaluate.

  74. mj Says:

wow insane news! finally the truth…i feel a bit deceived they said it was a strain! poor kid please get better! it’s been a weird year: me13 out on a stupid play, cg never recovered…. the whole thing is curious, get rid of trask, teddy had not thrown a ball in months then he skies it and about gets jmac killed. ive spent more than two months waiting every minute for the bucs to be healthy and realize their full potential to now realize it’s not going to happen, the bucs are awesome and a great team but i don’t see any way they make the super bowl this year, they need everybody healthy to get there. the 2026 training camp and pre season needs to be all about having every one healthy for week one. absolutely horrible news, take the year off jmac and get better!

  75. mj Says:

or it’s all working acc to plan? we get me13, cg, jmac, godeke and kalijah back for the divisional round!

  76. Canabuc Says:

With this news and not expecting him back this year we should go get Tyler lockett asa. Free agent. We need some able bodies at receiver. Love johnson and Sheperd but not as wr2 and 3.

  77. GoneGator Says:

Welcome to another episode of who’s fault is it ?

Shlt happens. No one is to blame. 🙄

Bummer news just the same. Was hoping for him to come back soonish – we need him.

  78. MadMax Says:

We need help blocking AND receiving….go get a TE since Otton seems the only one we have who can do both. Andrews or Njoku. Then we can do some two TE sets that Baker seems to thrive with.

  79. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

I didn’t like the way he was helped and it all went the way I thought. Certain things that are over looked can end your career and more. I didn’t know there were broken bones and I’m your in this spot. I was hoping that JMac and Egbuka were going to both be making these awesome plays guys. L4 5 and S1 are fused and my body doesn’t want to heal. Bone growth won’t happen properly. J Mac I love you little brother, make for sure before you get a game..
Let’s Go Bucs!!!! Rest baby rest y’all needed this week.

  80. CleanHouse Says:

    Teddy Bridgewater = Logan Hall

  81. SMH Says:

Did Trask ever get one of our receivers necks broken? Asking for a friend.

  82. CleanHouse Says:

As I said in a former post, the Bucs constant deception is disgraceful. Whether it be injuries or telling us that scrub bust players are going to be great, the fanbase is sick of it.

Stop acting like politicians and give it to us straight.

  83. Jeff Says:

Super sad. Let’s just hope he can resume a pain free normal life at some point. His NFL career is over.

  84. ChrisBuc2327 Says:

Should have not even been on the field during that preseason game common Bowles what were you thinking? SMH

  85. BucsFan81 Says:

Sounds like he won’t ever be the same either like Godwin. Looks like we will have a whole new WR core next year. Ebuka, Tez and we need to draft another top WR.

  86. ChrisBuc2327 Says:

We will need to get another big physical receiver like Mike to pair with Buka for the future 💯

  87. mj Says:

at least he’s not a quad like jason street in friday night light errr i forgot that’s just a show

  88. dumboldguy Says:

So we can assume that Bucky has a missing foot and shoulder and they are growing new ones in the lab. Week to week.

  89. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Well Jalen is was good knowing you. Sorry you never got more than one season to play pro football.

  90. SlyPirate Says:

    Daryl Porter Jr.
In case you’re wondering, that’s the name of the player that broke JMac’s neck in preseason. He’s current on a practice squad.

    Well done, DP.

  91. Itzok Says:

    Careers over sad news

  92. Geno711 Says:

Why are guys saying his career is over?

Now, I will be one of the first to admit that this injury is likely worse than JPP’s.

JPP’s injury sounded bad broken neck. But as I was saying back then, if there was not neck ligament damage then the neck fracture itself should heal well on JPP and like I thought, JPP came back during the season.

The fact that he is this many months past and what we hear are things like non-operatively (in a brace) and is progressing, the medical team is confident that the ligaments and supporting structures have sufficient integrity to allow the bone to heal in a stable, proper alignment and we are not hearing no neurological issues — seems to me better than a 50 percent chance he will return to play for the Bucs.

Not this season, IMO, but likely ready for the start of next season. Now if there is a permanent poor alignment, he won’t be able to play ever again.

I hope I am correct that he will be ready for next season.
