Jakobi Meyers And The Bucs

October 23rd, 2025

If you don’t think the Bucs need receiver help, then this post isn’t for you.

Mike Evans will miss at least 10 games. Chris Godwin is injured and is a shell of great self. Jalen McMillan has an ugly neck injury with no return timetable.

None of the above was in the Bucs’ grand plan to win a Super Bowl this season.

Joe is not pretending the receiver situation is ok for a team with Super Bowl aspirations in a passing league. It’s good enough to beat the Saints on Sunday and get to the bye week, but it’s a looming problem.

And the spark of the Bucs’ 2024 offense, running back Bucky Irving, has a bad foot and a bad shoulder. He’s primed to miss his fourth game of the season on Sunday in New Orleans.

As Baker Mayfield says and the film shows, the Bucs offense runs through Evans. Now he’s gone.

The Bucs have done a masterful job winning games, maximizing depth and riding rookie sensation receiver Emeka Egbuka, but Joe thinks the Bucs and Egbuka would benefit from adding a dangerous receiver.

Joe has an eye on Raiders veteran receiver Jakobi Meyers. He’s in the final year of his contract that pays him a little over $10 million this season. Meyers, who turns 29 next month, has been a very good receiver for several years — in New England and Las Vegas. The poor guy has had quarterback after quarterback after quarterback since Tom Brady left him following his rookie season.

Meyers is a hell of a success story after being undrafted in 2019. Last year, he had 87 catches for 1,027 yards and 4 touchdowns in messy Las Vegas.

Meyers has said publicly he’d be happy to be traded. Rebuilding Las Vegas, which has scored just 26 points through the past three games, haven’t handed him a contract extension.

If the Bucs dealt for Meyers, a player or a late-round draft pick, he clearly would be a half-season rental. And the Bucs would be on the hook for roughly half of his salary. Very affordable.

Raiders general manager John Spytek knows the Tampa Bay roster intimately. So perhaps there’s a little-used Bucs player that’s making him drool?

Joe will toss out one player example since the Bucs understandably cling to their draft picks: Devin Culp. The Bucs have yet to throw the ball to their third-string tight end. Perhaps Spytek would be willing to swap?

I don’t think we are in a dire spot. Tez is coming along, Emeka is lights out, JMac and Godwin will be back later on, sooner or later. Mike will potentially be back for the playoffs. There is zero reason to panic at WR.

  2. Defense Rules Says:

Trade Devin Culp? Nah. Here’s a different idea: USE HIM.

Last season he blew up in the Panthers & Saints games, catching 5-of-6 targets for 88 yards. He’s got untapped talent, but he’s not being given a chance this season.

  3. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Do you think Spytek would want to trade Meyers for Desmond Fatson?

  4. bucnjim Says:

That is a very realistic take on the WR issue. Tez running the wrong routes last week didn’t help his cause. Even his TD he ran the wrong way, but Mayfield spotted him. Backyard football doesn’t often work in the NFL.

  5. Ander Says:

This would be a great move. Ive been calling this for the last 2 weeks

  6. purplebeard Says:

I don’t expect Godwin or Evans to be back this season, if their smart. A good defense shines a glaring light on our O line. I’m more worried about shoring that up. That will keep Baker healthy, give him more time in the pocket, and get our run game going.

  7. purplebeard Says:

    … If they’re smart.

  8. Jeff Says:

    Never gonna happen.

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Wow…big sports betting busts happening right now.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    NBA exposed as corrupt.

  11. TampaBayBucFan Says:

Licht has done very well with later round picks and UDFAs…..

Culp, Hayes, Tez, Izien, Tucker, Cameron Johnson, Haggard, Klein, Merriwether, Miller, Watts, Josh Williams, Ko Keift.

Plus the roster is loaded with 5th round picks who are contributing.

I trust Licht with the draft and FAs are available & teams let them go for a reason.

  12. BucU Says:

We have so many positions to fill from injury or bad play why bother trading for this guy? It’s one index finger filling a hole in a dam where there’s more than a dozen other holes leaking water. It’s kind of irrelevant at this point. One more middle of the road receiver albeit healthy is not going to put us over the top.
There is no way to band aid this many injuries across the board. That’s the hand we’re dealt so roll ahead with what you got.
P.S. I really hope Licht has learned a lesson with signing, resigning or extending older and often injured players.

  13. Weebs10 Says:

    Cmon JL pull the trigger!

  14. jcscycles Says:

See if they will take a fifth or 4th round for him. Good receiver, and with the Bye coming they can bring him up to speed.

With Culp I think Coen liked him but Grizz not so much. Don’t know why. But our current OC needs a running game. Use Tucker more.

  15. Saskbucs Says:

In his limited action, I was impressed by Culp.

Him and Durham prolly need to give Baker a bigger target.

I’d be fine with this rental. Jakobi… be joining a lot of mouths to feed especially if Evans returns so maybe he wouldn’t like this destination.

Raiders have Bowers and Mayer… how badly do they need another TE? I guess those guys have been injured a bit as well.

  16. David Says:

All for it. I’m also for trading Reddick and a 2nd round pick for Trey Hendrickson

For those balking at trading Culp… Why? They’re not using him, he can’t block. He’s not fast enough to be an outside receiver. Jacobi is a proven commodity that can help now, not a project. This team is built for Super Bowl now. Godwin hopefully returns after the bye. J Mac And Evans are at the end of the year or playoff run. At best.

The second half of the year is looking more difficult with New England, Atlanta, and Carolina coming on

  17. DS Says:

    We need a WR badly

  18. Mhystc Says:

This only makes sense, if we shut Evans and Godwin down for the whole year..

  19. Lightningvinny1 Says:

Jacobi and Crosby for 2 firsts lol,, a guy can dream right

  20. 813BUCBOI Says:

    no bueno!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  21. DS Says:

    McMillan ain’t coming back

  22. Weekendwarrior6 Says:

I actually was thinking of this very same scenario once ME13 went down and saw Meyers still want to be traded. It’s obviously a rental for the remainder of the season and not anything past that. I would be fine with Meters filling in until we can get reinforcements at the WE position

  23. BucU Says:

    Nor is Geodeke Probably.

  24. BigZ Says:

I called this Tuesday. Jakobi is so underrated. Yes, please.

  25. BigZ Says:

Culp for Jakobi would make Tony Soprano blush, that would be a Buccaneer loot.

  26. adam from ny Says:

our top 3 are basically all done for the year…

    it’s crazy man…!

    bucky is screwed too…

all top offensive weapons are now gone…

the eggman is semi scrambled right now…!

receivers 5 thru 7 are playing pretty well though…

    culp doesn’t see the field…

and beer prices are going up

  27. BucYou Says:

    It’d be a 6th for Meyers and a 7th. Not a bad trade.

  28. MelvinJunior Says:

It’d be a good move. I don’t see much else out there, at any position. Right now, anyway.

  29. Biggun Says:

Yup 100 % all day long J Meyers is a dog all the way back at NC State caught everything and is tough as nails! GO BUCS!!!

  30. heyjude Says:

Not a good move. He has a knee and toe injury.

  31. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

I’m at a loss, this injury thing is terrible guys. The NFL needs new refs and if they need to get some of them a seeing eye dog. The Eagles held all day and got away with it as well. I think Baker should start doing what Mox did in Varsity Blues, he hit a few different people, refs, mascots, his dad. Let’s Go Bucs!!!!

  32. Let ‘em bake Says:

Time to run 3 tight end set . Let’s get culp going.

  33. buc4evr Says:

Bucs should have signed Ray Ray to the practice squad. Would have been cheap insurance.

  34. Tucker Says:

I would be all for this move sooner the better.

  35. Scotty Mack Says:

The tight end positon is probably the Raiders’ biggest strength right now, so Culp is the last guy they would be drooling over. A running back would make more sense. Send them Tucker, and yes, I’m all for trading for Meyers.

  36. MelvinJunior Says:

buc4evr Says: “Bucs should have signed Ray Ray to the practice squad. Would have been cheap insurance.”

YES. 💯 Why the hell not. No-brainer to me. Local Kid. Veteran. Dependable. Cheap.

  37. Beeej Says:

I’m with DR: Culp is about the same size and speed as Evans, has good hands, we should start giving him snaps at wide receiver

  38. john Says:

culp is a baller idk why were sleeping on him. maybe his blocking isnt the best but he has break away speed. we need to use him

  39. BuxfaninTX Says:

I hear that Russell Gage is available 🤦‍♀️

  40. Fred McNeil Says:

I’m with all the Culp supporters. Isn’t he a tick or two faster than Evans and Godwin?

  41. Fred McNeil Says:

@bucsfanin TX: I didn’t even realize Gage was still playing. Are they gonna fly him in via air ambulance or hearse?

  42. GoneGator Says:

Not sure what’s convinced some fans that Culp is the missing link. He did catch most of his targets in VERY limited action last year but he’s been seen by coaches in scores of practices and therefore have A LOT more tape on him than 2 games. And I don’t think they’re seeing him as anything more than a tight end “project” @ this point.

As far as WRs go, when/if we get J-Mac back, Godwin healed up, Tez playing up to his potential, EE being EE, Shep, Miller we’ll be loaded.

Mike gave us contested catch excellence and a large catch radius. EE, J-Mac, and Tez are all smaller than Mike but have more hops and, with all due respect to Mike, probably better hands.

I’m of the opinion that our WR corps will be fine and can be great IF Grizz tweaks our pass game to suit who we do have left. I’d rather see us pick up another RB, D-line, LB.

  43. Joe Says:

Not sure what’s convinced some fans that Culp is the missing link.

First week-10 days of training camp he was on fire. Then he vanished. No bueno.

  44. purplebeard Says:

Baker Mayfield is like baseball player, Oscar Charleston. Doubt many will get the reference. The spit and the grit, die-hard faith and determination, and a reason for having a chip his shoulder. Sometimes if feels like Tampa Bay is thought of as less than legitimate among the elites that control the league. Example: a man is literally on your back, his arm around your neck, both feet off the ground, all while the ball is in the air. No flag. Any fines for the refs, for a non-call that broke a man’s bone?

  45. purplebeard Says:

Thanks, Joe, for leaving that in.

  46. Pickgrin Says:

“Mike Evans will miss at least 10 games”

That sounds like a pessimistic forecast to me.

Broken collarbone is a 6-8 week injury. So even if Evans doesn’t have surgery until this weekend – and takes the full 8 weeks to heal – he should still be ready by the end of December and thus play in the final 2 games of the regular season.

  47. Rod Munch Says:

Said it the other day, but offer the Raiders two 1st’s, for Crosby, Devin White, and Meyers. Literally helps big time at all three positions, if you do some deal sending back Hasson, get the Raiders to eat a little salary, then you could probably pull it off.

The Raiders however said they aren’t trading Crosby, but two 1st rounders would be awfully tempting you’d think.

  48. MadMax Says:

    Mark Andrews please.
